Disney Cast Members Donate Record 3.1 Million School Supplies to Central Florida Students

back to school

School superintendents from Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Polk counties today joined Disney VolunEARS and Mickey Mouse to celebrate a record 3.1 million supplies and 13,000 backpacks that are on the way to students across Central Florida.

The supplies, all donated by Disney Cast Members and Walt Disney World Resort, were collected during the annual Back-to-School Supply Drive. The initiative is part of Disney’s long-standing tradition of supporting school children in Central Florida from early learning through college.

“With the Back-to-School drive, our mission is to help set students up for success, even if it is one pencil at a time,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “We not only want to make a difference for the students, but also inspire others to support and nurture the children who are the future of our community.”

Disney’s Armed Forces Salute allows for Continued Special Vacations

provided by militarydisneytips.com

On Wednesday, August 8th, Disney released the details of the renewed Armed Forces Salute for 2012-2013.  This “Salute” offers Military members and their families admission tickets and resort rooms at a discounted price.  Due to the much appreciated discount, many Military members and their families are able to experience a special and memorable vacation that they otherwise may not be able to afford.

I’ve asked Steve Bell, creator and owner of the Military Disney Tips website, to share a little more about what the Disney Armed Forces Salute means to these Military members.

Q: Besides the discount that Military families receive, what is it that truly makes the Disney Armed Forces Salute so special?  What does it mean to families that are able to utilize it?

Steve: The discounts extended to military families by Disney are indeed fantastic!  Our military members lead very busy lives these days.  Most deploy to combat zones multiple times over a several year period, spending six to 12 months away from their family. Being in a combat zone is stressful enough on it’s own, but the time away from the spouse and children adds even more for both the military member and their family.

Disney’s Armed Forces Salute allows for special vacations before, after, or on a mid year break in a deployment. Many military members, especially the lower ranking members, would never be able to afford to do this without these discounts.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season Five Red Carpet Premiere at Star Wars Celebration VI – More Thrills and Maul in HD

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season Five Red Carpet Premiere at Star Wars Celebration VI - More Thrills and Maul in HD

Attendees of Star Wars Celebration VI will be the first in the world to see the action-packed premiere of Season Five of Star Wars: The Clone Wars at a big screen red carpet event featuring stars of the hit series from Lucasfilm Animation.

On Friday, August 24th at 5 pm, the Digital Stage at Celebration VI – the venue optimized for high-definition digital theatrical exhibition with state-of-the-art surround sound – will present an evening of Star Wars: The Clone Wars entertainment beginning with a special presentation of the Season Four finale, the episodes “Brothers” and “Revenge.” These are followed by “Revival,” the long-awaited Season Premiere, on Cartoon Network this fall, that continues the story of the resurrected Darth Maul.

Maul and Savage Opress continue to wreak havoc in the galaxy. As part of Maul’s wicked master plan, the Sith brothers recruit a cutthroat band of pirates. Obi-Wan Kenobi leads the Jedi hunt for Maul, which results in a lightsaber-clashing confrontation that will prove deadly.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with supervising director Dave Filoni along with special guests from the series.

Pixar dives deep in new bath time ‘Toy Story’ short

Pixar dives deep in new bath time 'Toy Story' short

According to EW.com … Given how short Rex’s arms are, it’s ironic that he’s the Toy Story world’s resident hand-wringer.

But in Pixar’s new animated short Partysaurus Rex (playing before Finding Nemo 3-D on Sept. 14), we discover that bath time is when the nervous-nellie plastic dinosaur finally lets himself get down and dirty.

“He’s sick of being the angel of goodness and sensibleness and caution and fear,” says voice actor Wallace Shawn, who has played the persnickety plaything since 1995. “He wants to stand on the side of pleasure and happiness and joy. … I live this drama every day of my life!”

It’s the third in Pixar’s series of Toy Story Toons shorts, which follow life for Woody, Buzz and the gang in the care of new owner Bonnie (seen at the end of Toy Story 3and as the face in the center of the bubbles in the pic below.) In this mini-movie, Rex gets drafted for bath time and encounters a sad lot of rub-a-dub-dub cohorts.

Walt Disney Imagineering make significant appointment for upcoming Walt Disney World projects

According to WDWMagic.com, Walt Disney Imagineering has just completed an organizational reshuffle which appears to point to some significant activity at Walt Disney World in the near future.

Kathy Magnum, a 30 year plus veteran at WDI who has most recently overseen the Cars Land project at Disneyland Resort, has moved to Florida to become ‘Executive Producer, Walt Disney World Portfolio”.  In this new role, Kathy becomes the creative producer for Walt Disney World, partnering with Jack Blitch.  In her new role, Kathy will continue to report to WDI Chief Creative Executive, Bruce Vaughn.  She will also work directly with Meg Crofton and her executive team on behalf of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Joe Rhode continues as creative director at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Eric Jacobson continues with responsibility for the creative side of Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Epcot.

These changes come as Walt Disney World is starting to wrap up on the new Fantasyland expansion, and is nearing ground breaking on AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Traveling to Disney World with a Wheelchair

I’m sure we have all seen wheelchairs in the park, some pushed by others, some on there own or even the motorized scooter type’s, whatever kind… they are there, thankfully!

My mom would never be able to experience the Magic of Disney if they were not, so for her and others who need them, again I am thankful that they can be used in Disney and for most part, easily!

When visiting Disney World you can rent what you need from them, here is a list of prices and locations:

For the convenience of Guests with disabilities, wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECV) are available for rent at a variety of locations throughout Disney Theme Parks and the Downtown Disney Area. A limited supply of wheelchairs is also available for Guests use at select Disney Resort hotel locations, but ECVs are not available. ECVs are designed to be single-rider and not to hold more than one person.

Top 5 Trains at Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World Railroad train

All aboard for the final article in this series:  the Top 5 Trains at Walt Disney World Resort. Walt Disney was a train fanatic, so it’s only logical they would be prominent features in his theme parks. You know, he built his first thrill ride, the 1/8 scale Carolwood Pacific Railroad, in his own backyard years before opening Disneyland Resort. Proof positive that Walt, like Peter Pan, never wanted to grow up!

Walt’s favorite tops today’s Top 5:

1.) The Walt Disney World Railroad – Like its Disneyland counterpart, the Walt Disney World Railroad encircles Magic Kingdom Park, delivering Guests to convenient locations in the different lands and stopping every four to ten minutes on its 1.5-mile track. Its four antique, steam-powered engines, the Walter E. Disney, the Lilly Belle, the Roy O. Disney, and the Roger E. Broggie, were built in the United States around the turn of the 20th century and serviced the United Railways of Yucatan in Mexico until Disney purchased them in 1969.

Tuner dad turns son’s Lightning McQueen into real electric runner

Tuner dad turns son’s Lightning McQueen into real electric runner

“Cars” may not be the most well-liked Pixar movie among adults, but it’s got a healthy following among the booster-seat set. So when Sean Burgess’ five-year-old son wore out his Lightning McQueen Powerwheel, Burgess did what any experienced car tuner would do: took it into his shop and gave it an upgrade into a mini electric race car.

Burgess, the co-owner of the FFTEC tuning shop in Union City, Calif., reworked the toy with the addition of race-quality parts, starting with a 0.66-hp, 500-watt electric motor, a disc brake and real steel-and-rubber wheels in place of the plastic originals. All of this tech bolts into an aluminum subframe, linked to a 24-volt pack of race-car batteries, that adds far more power but not so much as to make Lightning too dangerous for a preschooler.

Burgess’ son Evan can be seen below giving the home-tuned McQueen a full workout, including time on an oval track. Remember this one when the voting for cool dad of the year comes around.

Review: “Strategies for Paying for Disney” – A Great Source to Saving Money For Your Next Vacation

Review: "Strategies for Paying for Disney" - A Great Source to Saving Money For Your Next Vacation

Disney blogger and Sorcerer Radio on-air personality, Natalie Henley, recently published her first book Strategies for Paying for Disney. Henley shares her experiences as a certified public accountant and her love of the Disney parks to pass along tips and tricks for saving money to help you pay for your Disney vacation.

The book’s layout reads like a detailed road map giving the reader a nice overview of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts. If you are a frequent visitor to the “House of Mouse” this information will be “old hat” to you. The next section goes into the nuts-and-bolts of transportation, lodging, tickets and dining. What I like is the way Henley poses questions and options to consider when creating your budget, after all, she is a CPA.

Midway through the text she calls upon her accounting background that including some common sense money-saving tips regarding coupons and discounts as well as some out-of-the-box tricks like mortgages, credit cards and tax refunds. Great advise for even the most organized and thrifty vacation planners.
