A Day Outside the Disney World Theme Parks

A Day Outside the Disney World Theme Parks

I must confess, I love my Disney vacation planning spreadsheet. In fact, the only thing that makes me as happy as actually being on a Disney vacation is planning my next trip.  I spend countless hours planning dining reservations, Extra Magic Hours, and researching resorts.  However, as I gather more trips under my Mickey belt, I have learned to include one more item that is so important to a successful Disney trip-a day away from the parks.

As much I love to plan our Disney vacations, I always try to remember to leave room for the moments that really matter; the unexpected pixie dust moments. Having a day to slow down a little bit and enjoy each other is usually my family’s favorite day of our vacation.

Enjoy your resort:

  • As magical as a day at the parks can be, it’s also tiring. Having a day to sleep in instead of rushing to rope drop can help everyone be ready to enjoy the next day even more.
  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your resort followed by a walk to enjoy the beautiful landscaping at your resort.   Everyone’s smile will be even more magical when they are rested!
  • Take some time to relax in the sunshine and enjoy splashing in the pool. Also, Disney resorts offer wonderful activities for guests to enjoy. These range from Pop Century’s afternoon hustle lessons to boat rentals and fishing at Port Orleans Riverside.

Away from your resort:

  • A favorite tradition among many guests is to hop on the monorail and spend some time eating delicious snacks and admiring the gorgeous resorts. Added bonus of spending the afternoon getting on and off the monorail? Learning everyone’s favorite Spanish phrase-“Por favor mantengase alejado de las puertas.”
  • Miniature golf is also a fun way to spend a few hours together. There are 2 different courses to choose from, Disney’s Fantasia Gardens and Disney’s Winter Summerland. The Fantasia course is definitely the more challenging of the two although certainly not too tricky for everyone to enjoy. The prices are reasonable and getting to the courses is as simple as hopping on a bus at your resort.
  • A delicious dinner is a wonderful to end your day outside of the parks. O’hana, located at the Polynesian Resort is my family’s personal favorite. We especially love when we have been lucky enough to watch the fireworks from the beach after our great dinner.

Downtown Disney:

There really is something for everyone to enjoy here. Shopping, movies, bowling, wonderful restaurants and so much more are all available at Downtown Disney.

  • World of Disney  is not to be missed during a visit to Downtown Disney! It is the world’s largest Disney character shopping store. 12 amazingly themed rooms, each full of items ranging from toys to household items and everything in between.
  • The Lego store is fun for the entire family. Everyone can enjoy building with the Legos in the interactive section outside the store and getting their pictures taken with the sculptures made out of Legos.
  • Disney Quest is a 5 floor interactive, virtual reality game filled, gamer’s dream come true is also a great way to spend some time. It does require a separate admission ticket though.
  • When you visit Downtown Disney be sure to come hungry! From delicious ribs at House of Blues, ice cream sundaes at Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop to seafood at Fulton’s Crab House, there is something for everyone’s tastes.

What are some things you like to do outside of visiting the parks at Walt Disney World? Let us know in the comment box below.

Heather L is an avid Disney fan and has been visiting the parks since she was 4. She is a homeschooling mom and is happiest with a Mickey balloon in one hand and a Mickey bar in the other.

Secret to enjoy a rainy day in Disney with your Toddler

Secret to enjoy a rainy day in Disney with your Toddler
Soaked after a day in the rain!

I am often asked “What happens if it rains?”  “What is there to do in Disney?”  The great thing about Disney is that there are many options for rainy days.  Your family could shop till you drop at Downtown Disney, visit Disney Quest, open up your umbrella and only visit the shows and rides that are indoors such as Mickey’s Philharmagicin the Magic Kingdom, take a break and a much-needed nap in your hotel room, or even visit a few of the Disney resorts (they are especially beautiful during the Christmas season!)

However my favorite answer to give is: “Go out and play in the rain!”  Yes I said it and I mean it…find your inner child, take off your socks, put on a pair of flip-flops, sandals, or Mickey crocs (yes I said that too…CROCS), and go stomp around in puddles!  You will have the time of your lives and your kids will think you are the coolest people on the planet!

Saving Mr. Banks Begins Production In Los Angeles

Saving Mr. Banks Begins Production In Los Angeles

Disney began production today on “Saving Mr. Banks,” the account of Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to P.L. Travers’ popular novel, Mary Poppins, and the testy partnership the upbeat filmmaker develops with the uptight author during the project’s pre-production in 1961.

Two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia,” “Forrest Gump”) will essay the role of the legendary Disney (the first time the entrepreneur has ever been depicted in a dramatic film) alongside fellow double Oscar®-winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End,” “Sense and Sensibility”) in the role of the prickly novelist. Before actually signing away the book’s rights, Travers’ demands for contractual script and character control circumvent not only Disney’s vision for the film adaptation, but also those of the creative team of screenwriter Don DaGradi and sibling composers Richard and Robert Sherman, whose original score and song (Chim-Chim-Cher-ee) would go on to win Oscars® at the 1965 ceremonies (the film won five awards of its thirteen nominations).

When Travers travels from London to Hollywood in 1961 to finally discuss Disney’s desire to bring her beloved character to the motion picture screen (a quest he began in the 1940s as a promise to his two daughters), Disney meets a prim, uncompromising sexagenarian not only suspect of the impresario’s concept for the film, but a woman struggling with her own past. During her stay in California, Travers’ reflects back on her childhood in 1906 Australia, a trying time for her family which not only molded her aspirations to write, but one that also inspired the characters in her 1934 book.

Frankenweenie Midnight Screening & Party for D23 Members

Frankenweenie Midnight Screening & Party for D23 Members

From creative genius Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland,The Nightmare Before Christmas) comesFrankenweenie, a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers, and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. A stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie has been filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.

The El Capitan Theatre is thrilled to invite D23 Members to be among the first audiences to see Tim Burton’s newest movie, Frankenweenie. This special Midnight screening will include a costume contest with prizes and lots of surprises! Plus, see a display from the stop-motion making of the film, and experience an educational interactive exhibit from Discovery Science Center.

Take a day off – Try a Bike Rental at Disney World

Take a day off - Try a Bike Rental at Disney World
This is C&C writer, Jodi, enjoying a surrey bike with her family!

There is so much to do outside the theme park turnstiles at Walt Disney World.  In this series I am going to highlight some of these awesome activities! If you have not already, feel free to check out my other articles in this series showcasing  archery and boat rentals.

Today I am going to talk to you about renting bikes. Biking at Disney World is a fun and affordable way to see the sights and relax a little bit. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of biking, but I do enjoy it at Disney. I think it is because the bike paths are not challenging and offer and easy way to cruise around.

If you are going to rent a bike you can choose between an hourly fee of $9.00 plus tax or a daily fee of $18 plus tax. At some locations you can also choose to try out a 2 or 4 person surrey bike ! Surreys are available for 30 minute rentals at a cost of $20 for a two person or $22 for a 4 person.

New ‘FrankenWeenie’ Featurette Gives a New Look at the Film

New 'FrankenWeenie' Featurette Gives a New Look at the Film

One of the movies I’m most excited about this year is Tim Burton’s ‘FrankenWeenie’. I’m a huge fan of Burton, stop motion, and black and white movies, so this is a movie that was almost tailor-made for me. Ever since last years D23 Expo, I’ve been having a hard time containing my excitement for the film. Then this year at Comic-Con, which you can read more about here, I had a chance to attend the Walt Disney Studios panel where I got to see some full scenes from the movie, and they absolutely blew me away. This movie is really going to surprise audiences, so I’m excited for them to finally see more than just the trailers. Well, thankfully, Walt Disney Pictures has released a new featurette for the film, which gives you a new look at the film, and it’s really great. Hit the jump to check it out.
