Disney and Other Major Retailers Used Factory In Bangladesh Fire

Disney and Other Major Retailers Used Factory In Bangladesh Fire

A garment factory in Bangladesh where 112 people were killed in a fire over the weekend was used by a host of U.S. and European retailers, an Associated Press reporter discovered Wednesday from clothes and account books left behind amid the building wreckage at Tazreen Fashions Ltd.

The Walt Disney Co. said its records indicate that none of its licensees have been permitted to make Disney-brand products at the factory for at least a year.

Labor activists have argued for a long time that Western companies need to be responsible and make sure that oversea factories which manufacture their products are safe.  This recent fire, the deadliest in Bangladesh’s 35-year history of exporting clothing fueled the activists arguments that retailers must insist on safer fire standards.

The Bangladesh garment industry is second only to China in exports.  It has provided jobs and revenue for the poor country while in turn producing low-priced products for shoppers in the US and other countries.  But the industry has an awful safety record with more than 300 workers dying in garment factory fires since 2006 in Bangladesh.

Survivors of the fire claim that the exit doors were locked, and fire officials say the death toll wold have been much lower if the building had an emergency exit.

Some of the clothing in the building was marked “Disney/Pixar” and among the garments were sweatshirts with images of Lightning McQueen from the Pixar movie Cars.

Register books listed such buyers as Wal-Mart, Disney, Sears and other companies.

FRANKENWEENIE Coming to Blu-ray Combo Pack in January

Frankenweenie

The latest feature film from Walt Disney Pictures and Tim Burton Animation, Frankenweenie, will be released to 4-Disc Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, Digital and On Demand on January 8, 2013.

The stop-motion Frankenweenie was an immediate success when it hit theaters last month as a “plussed” revival of Tim Burton’s 1984 live-action short by the same title. Burton’s original effort featured a young boy named Victor Frankenstein who uses the power of science to bring his beloved, deceased dog Sparky back to life. (You can view a clip here; also included in the Combo Pack.) With an all-star cast that includes Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short, the 2012 version takes that story line a little farther with its plot twists and quirks, paying homage to classic fright fests like Dracula, Frankenstein, and Gremlins. Critics have called Frankenweenie one of Burton’s best works and recommend it for anyone who is a fan of these films, or is a fan of Tim Burton’s work in general.

The 4-Disc Combo Pack includes an all-new original short, a behind-the-scenes featurette with Tim Burton, a showcase of the film’s touring exhibit, Tim Burton’s live-action short of the same name, and more electrifying content (see below).

Add the Frankenweenie 4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack to your video library January 8. Suggested retail prices are 4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack $49.99 US/$56.99 Canada; 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack $39.99 US/$46.99 Canada; and 1-Disc DVD $29.99 US/$35.99 Canada. Rated PG in the United States and Canada. Feature run time is 87 minutes.

When Less is More for Your Little Ones at Disney World

Rafiki's Planet Watch

Many parents enjoy seeing Walt Disney World through their toddlers eyes. It is very fun to see their reactions to all the sights, sounds, colors and Characters. But one thing I didn’t expect was for our toddlers to tire out more quickly than they did at home. That’s when we realized that less time spent at the parks, can actually be a good thing with little ones. Here are a few things to consider when it comes to the “less is more” theory:

Park Tickets. A vacation to Walt Disney World can be expensive! How many times have you thought (or over heard) “I paid good money for these tickets, we’re going to use them and get our moneys worth!”? It certainly is tempting to get as much out of the parks as you can, but with little ones it can turn into more trouble than those tickets are worth. Consider buying base day tickets. Visit the park of your choice in the morning, take an afternoon break (nap, swim, play at your resort, etc.) and then return to the park in the evening. Base day tickets are the least expensive option of park tickets to buy. One park per day is plenty for your little ones to see, as well.

Take Breaks. It’s hard on a child to be cooped up in a stroller all day at the parks. Take plenty of breaks at the park – find a play area for your child to run around. Yes, it may mean seeing fewer attractions, but it sure beats dealing with a cranky child. A mid-day break back to your resort for a nap or quiet time is invaluable, if you’re able to take one. Allowing your child some freedom at your resort playground or swimming pool, lets them release some of their energy.

Journey of the Little Mermaid Characters Come to Life with Classic Storytelling and Innovative Technology

Mermaid

Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid debuts in a few days at Magic Kingdom, advancing the great tradition of the “dark ride” – a theme park classic that transports riders in guided vehicles through specially lit scenes often featuring animation sound, music, and special effects.

That said, the Little Mermaid attraction incorporates advanced technology and special effects to make guests feel as if they’ve been taken underwater as they encounter characters from “The Little Mermaid” in amazing three-dimensional forms.

Technical and design highlights begin with the building housing the attraction. The architecture itself was designed using new digital 3-D modeling technology and the façade, in its finished form, features Prince Eric’s castle from the film. Guests will arrive at the sandy beach line and descend into the caverns below Prince Eric’s castle to board their clam shell and journey under the sea with Ariel.

The painstaking attention to detail that is a hallmark of Walt Disney Imagineering is evident in an “underwater” grotto that appears to be a room inside the prince’s castle, with a beautiful domed ceiling, light penetrating from the sky above water to reveal artifacts of Prince Eric’s world.

In Ariel’s world, where sea creatures talk and sing, mischievous little crabs engage guests in games of ‘trash or treasure” to help the crabs fill their treasure chests. This is the latest example of how Imagineers use technology to create interactive queues that allow the fun to start almost immediately.

Opening this month! Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Downtown Disney West Side

Featuring a full-scale restaurant with two sushi bars, dining shares the spotlight with 30 high-tech bowling lanes at Splitsville Luxury Lanes, the new premier two-level entertainment destination that joins other fun experiences at Downtown Disney West Side.

With two kitchens, dramatic architecture, outdoor seating and live entertainment, guests can bowl and snack on pizza or filet mignon sliders, or skip the lanes and make a reservation for full-service dining – indoors or outdoors on the patio.

There’s sushi constantly being rolled on display upstairs and downstairs. “Who would expect sushi with bowling,” says Mark Gibson, co-founder of Splitsville.  Experts are slicing and dicing everything from California rolls to spicy tuna and the JB Roll with salmon – a dozen rolls in all.

Booths and tables for diners have blue, silver and gold accents. “They’re classic and refined, but with fun touches and retro finishes,” says Gibson.

The sophisticated menu, which features items for the entire family, is the creation of Chef Tim Cushman, one of Food & Wine magazine’s “Best New Chefs” in 2008. Starters include three-pepper calamari sautéed with cherry, jalapeño and banana peppers; seared ahi tuna; alley nachos with the works; mini-turkey clubs made with freshly roasted turkey and Loaded Fries “smothered with nacho cheese, bacon and love.”  Plus there are healthier options such as a variety of salads and edamame.

Disney Janitors Strike After 70 Workers Laid Off

Disney Janitors Strike After 70 Workers Laid Off

United Service Workers West voted to authorize a strike and protested outside the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank if Disney fails to rehire all workers.  The security officers and janitors currently work for contractors who clean landlord and corporate tenant offices. Over the last 10 years, workers have gained health care benefits and increased their wages above.

Disney does not guarantee that the workers will keep their jobs or benefits when a cleaning service provider takes over next week.

SEIU United Service Workers West currently represents more than 40,000 airport service workers, security officers, janitors and other property service workers in California. There are more than two million members in North America.

Disney has stated that the 68 impacted workers have been offered comparable positions to their current jobs with Able Service, the largest privately held buiding services provider in the United States. Able currently services other Disney locations and has a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU United Service Workers West.

Disney’s ABC Wants Autohop to Stop on The Dish

Disney's ABC Wants Autohop to Stop on The Dish

Dish Network Corp. (The Dish) has an ad-skipping TV recording feature, The Hopper, that is being challenged by many networks, including Disney-owned ABC Networks. The networks claim that the technology of ad-skipping threatens their very survival and is being played out in courts on both coasts. ABC is seeking a preliminary injunction according to a filing yesterday in Manhattan.  Though previously, on November 7th, a Federal judge in LA rejected the same motion made by News Corp. Fox Broadcasting.

Dish introduced a new DVR, The Hopper, last March. The main feature is AutoHop which was introduced in May and with just a button touch, it will skip all the ads automatically (so no more manual fast forwarding). The Hopper also has a PrimeTime Anytime feature that records all the major networks primetime shows automatically and you can skip the ads on these recordings as well.

Separate court filings to do with the case surround the separate courts residing over the same case on separate coasts. NBC has asked the New York judge to transfer the AutoHop case to Los Angeles.

“Having two district courts on separate coasts interpret the same contract would not serve the interests of judicial economy,” NBC said in the motion for the venue change.

No, this is not the Park Hopper – which would be a huge tragedy for the Park Hopper to go away but this is an interesting case that will change the way we watch TV in the future and how we pay for it. What do you want to see happen to The Hopper (and all the rest of the providers will not be far behind)…Stay tuned for more details!

Disney Confidential – Rapunzel Tower now visible in the Magic Kingdom

Disney Confidential - Rapunzel Tower now visible in the Magic Kingdom

Rapunzel…Rapunzel let down your golden hair….does that sound familiar? Well, if not get familiar with the movie, “Tangled” and come back here to read more. Recently, I, Anonymouse, got to visit Disney World for a few magical days. I did not want to say anything before about it, because as it is, I have to go incognito so as not to be mobbed by my adoring fans… unlike Chip who can walk around at WDW with his C&C gear on and nobody knows who he is.

So, I was walking along in Magic Kingdom and I got confused. I had seen the construction for the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train ride and so, what was this construction? Across from Liberty Tavern Inn and next too “it’s a small world” ride and behind construction walls there was a mystery something being built. I asked around, what is that, and no one would tell Anonymouse…because they knew I would tell EVERYONE!

But, guess what…I found out anyway and of course I am going to EVERYONE! The new building is going to be a…drumroll…bathrooms! But there is more (thankfully) It is rumored to be themed as Snuggly Duckling from the movie, “Tangled”. It is not going to be anything more than fancy bathrooms but still…interesting news and I was hoping they would start putting out more about “Tangled” and Rapunzel…  and since I have been wondering now for a week or more this does help me sleep better at night.

You can see an image of it here.

As more news breaks from around the Disney keep checking in!  See you real soon!!!! For more information you can check out my past Gossip articles here.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit 1900 Park Fare

Top 5 Reasons to Visit 1900 Park Fare

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa is known to offer luxury with a generous helping of Disney magic, as well as a variety delicious restaurants to choose from!

A big favorite at the Grand Floridian, especially for families with young children, is 1900 Park Fare! This restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner; and in addition to offering two differerent menus, it also offers two different character experiences!

So here are my top 5 reasons why you should visit 1900 Park Fare during your next trip to Walt Disney World.

5. Setting-Dining anywhere in this gorgeous, elegant resort makes you feel as if you are living the life of luxury! I’ve found that guests tend to dress up more when they come to dine at 1900 Park Fare; and I think that the decor has a lot to do with that. Once you’re inside the restaurant, you will find a large dining room, along with a few side rooms, with muted pink and cream color palette giving the room a vintage feel with a touch of whimsy. It fits both the resort’s theming, and the fact that this is a character restaurant. Also, keep an eye open for a massive, decorated organ known as Big Bertha which calls this restaurant home!

Did I Just See & Hear Mermaids on the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride?

pirates

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I went on one of my favorite rides and as I went along, somehow I had forgotten the news that mermaids had been added to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride – and I am hearing most people did not know either. So, I wanted to share with you my experience so you can be better prepared and on the lookout for the mermaids on your next “POTC” trip.

So, there I was riding along with my group and I began to hear the voices of mermaids singing. I thought to myself, is that new? Then I saw mermaids swimming in the water, and I KNEW that was new. So, I said to my group they have added the mermaids to Pirates of the Caribbean! And all of a sudden the coolest part popped up, the skeleton of a mermaid. Normally, I would not think a skeleton was “cool” in any way. But, the Disney Imagineers did a great job of making the skeleton believable as a mermaid and really help seal the deal of mermaid representation in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. I know that the mermaids are part of the story now, but I think Disney needs to be given a standing ovation on this one. Not only did they add the mermaids into the ride fairly quickly they also did it just subtle enough where you are looking for it and then are delighted with it!
