The Disney Essentials Survival Kit

lug

Walt Disney World vacations are amazing – there is so much to do and see and experience, and there is definitely a lot of buildup when planning – you check out all the restaurants and menus and rides and attraction information, so once it’s time, you are READY to go, and NOTHING can stop you!

…Well, ok, not nothing, we are only human after all, and sometimes – things happen, and it’s best to be as prepared as possible for anything and everything that could come your way while on your WDW vacation

That’s why I came up with the Disney Essentials Survival Kit – these are all the things I never leave home without when I am heading to WDW:

Portable Medicine Cabinet: I make sure I have plenty of medication to get us through whatever may befall us while at Disney. Items I include are: Tylenol/ibuprofin/aspirin, Excedrin, Pepto-Bismol (in pill form), Tums, Benadryl, Mucinex, Sudafed, DayQuil and NyQuil. I also make extra sure that I am up to date on prescription refills and that I have enough of all of them to get me through. I make sure to pack all of this in my Carry on luggage, just in case my checked bags get lost, then I know I won’t be without my medications, should I need them

*Please note – you CAN buy some of these over the counter medicine items at the Disney gift shops, but
the selection is VERY limited and tends to be very expensive as well – so I highly recommend you bring
your own if you can

Disney Foodie Favorites – Breakfast!

Big Kahuna

Last week on our Disney Foodie Series we talked about Snacks, now let’s move on to some Breakfast favorites!! This is one meal that most people are divided on…have pop tarts or cereal in the room for a quick get up and go type of breakfast or grab something in your food court, maybe stop and grab a pastries or cupcake in the park or make an ADR for a sit-down breakfast like at Kona or Boma or do you wake up early on the day your ADR window opens and book Chef Mickey or Cinderella’s Castle to start your day the most Magical way!

No wrong answer here and honestly we do a combination of all of the above on our trips to the world! But this is all about being a Disney Foodie so let’s break this down by Quick Service and Sit down’s in each park, DTD and resorts! I mean there are sooooo many favorites why just pick one 😉

So let’s start with parks… Magic Kingdom!

Well Main Street Bakery is a Breakfast fan favorite for many reasons, pastries, specialty coffees, cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches…what? It is vacation, who am I to judge 😉 but all those options aside (and maybe more to come soon) I always have the Warm Cinnamon Roll here for breakfast…big, warm, soft and gooey it is de-lish!! Plus the line goes quick here, seats inside or grab yourself a seat outside and watch as folks start to head into the park for the day!

Chip’s Tips – While the MSB is under refurbishment head up to Gaston Tavern for those Warm Cinnamon Rolls!

My favorite Sit-Down Breakfast in Magic Kingdom is hands down Crystal Palace! Now yes I have a thing for Winnie the Pooh but breakfast here has never disappointed us! I enjoy most selections here the breakfast pizza, the potatoes, Mickey Waffles but my must have here is the Puffed French Toast I could have just that and be happy as a clam!

More after the jump…

Animal Kingdom!

I will say on other trips to the world if we weren’t having a sit down breakfast here we grabbed something quick in our room or food court then headed to AK… Then I read somewhere to give Pizzafari a try for breakfast, I thought “Pizzafari really” well I must say we were pleasantly surprised! My hubby had the breakfast Panini, my son a blueberry muffin and I had and fell in love with the Spinach and Goat Cheese Frittata it was served with a salsa a yummy potatoes! It was scrumptious I can’t wait to have it again! This was defiantly a “who knew” for us but we loved this little gem for breakfast!

Sit down Breakfast here in AK for us is always a family favorite of the trip, and while its Animal Kingdoms only sit down breakfast it is a winner in the category none the less… Tusker House~ Donald’s Safari Breakfast! This buffet offer your normal Disney breakfast fare but they also add in some dishes that run along the lines of dishes you would see at Boma. My stand out here is the Ham and Cheese Frittata so tasty with the right amount of ham and cheese! I do have to give a shout out to the Cheese Blintzes, these little “heaven pockets” are stuffed with a sweet cream cheese that would rival any pastries’ offered here.

Hollywood Studios

Starring Rolls Cafe is the “Only” place we do breakfast here… Sad but true! Then again sad is NOT the word for here, oh no some of our favorite goodies come from here! The Cupcakes… ahhh… yes the cupcakes… It is a rule that at least once on vacation we can have cupcakes for breakfast and it always seems to be here! So if have you never had cupcakes for breakfast then take a stroll down Sunset Boulevard and get yourself one 😉 If Cupcakes aren’t your thing, then defiantly try the Apple or Cherry Turnovers or any of the Muffins they offer here, always outstanding!

Epcot

Sunshine Season is always a great stop for a quick morning breakfast! We seem to always get a Child French Toast meal here or split a platter (eggs, bacon, potato’s, sausage & biscuit) meal, reason…we like to eat our way around the world showcase later! 😉 Yes while we like breakfast most days, when offered all the yummy goodies the World Showcase has to offer, we save room in our bellies for that and forgo breakfast “most” Epcot days! Normal breakfast fare is the norm here but always good and there is something about the Potatoes here, mmm they are tasty little buggers, so guess what my part is when we share.

Downtown Disney

I read awhile back about Wolfgang Puck Express and never thought about breakfast here until then, so like any good Disney Foodie I put it on my Itinerary and off we went! While this is a Quick Service place its ads a nice mix of table service, I really like this place anytime of the day and the food is always outstanding! That said one of my favorites (day or night) is the Wolfgang’s Breakfast Pocket it is stuffed full of scrambled eggs, bacon, onions, peppers and cheese and all tucked in a pizza dough, now kids this is good eats!!

Disney Resorts

No matter where we stay at least once we hit our food court for breakfast and while Mickey Waffles and a Breakfast Platters always seem to be our choices I will say we have always liked them! Of course I always take the Potatoes 😉 Now as far as sit down places at the resorts for breakfast, we have hit them all and while O’Hana, Boma, Chef Mickey’s & 1900 Park Fare are places we have been to a couple times each, our favorite is Kona Cafe in the Polynesian Resort! I know that Tonga Toast is a fan favorite here… but my love here is the Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes these are so good they get my “Shut the Front Door” award for favorite breakfast dish on WDW property!

These are my Breakfast Favorites but as a Disney Foodie I am always on the lookout for new places and goodies to try! Stay tuned for Disney Foodie Favorite Lunch Spots and dishes!

Couple’s Special Wish for Dream Wedding And Disney Honeymoon Is Granted

nolan disney photo

It happens all the time at Disney, but in real life when “dreams do come true” it makes it all that more special. And that is the story of Nolan Keane and Morgan Cartens of Kewanee, IL.

Sweethearts since high school, the couple were dealt a devastating blow when Nolan Keane, a 28 year old Missouri State University Grad and former division-1 baseball player was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastomo multiforme, an aggressive type of brain cancer, four years ago.  He was told by his doctors he had one year to live.

Instead of giving up, Nolan has fought his disease with Morgan at his side.  He has undergone eight brain surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy and trial treatments and has been fighting his cancer for almost four full years longer that doctors had given him to live.  Morgan, a 26 year old nurse, put her work on hold and moved in with Nolan’s family to help take care of him.

“I didn’t think twice about it. I knew he needed me and I would kind of feel guilty taking care of others,” she said. “We just take it day by day and we make it work. … You get put in a situation and you do what you have to do.”

Top 10 Things You Need to Know About Dining at WDW

CHEF PAUL BOCUSE MEETS CHEF REMY AT EPCOT

Disney World fans know that Dining at Disney can be as much of a magical experience as the characters and attractions; but with so many restaurants to choose from, dining plans to consider, menus, prices, and more, where do you start?

That’s what today’s post is all about, giving you that head start when tackling the Disney Dining world. So keep reading to learn the top 10 things you need to know about dining at WDW!

10. Use the Dining Plan-I’m a big believer in the Disney Dining Plan and never visit without it! First of all, it offers me an all inclusive vacation, which makes Disney less stressful. Secondly, I believe it does save you cash. Dining at Disney is pricey, and this applies to drinks and snacks; and trust us, you’re going to be stopping by those snack carts and restaurants pretty regularly, especially if you have kids. It’s a good possibility that you will go over your dining budget; and it’s no fun to haul around sandwiches and snacks in that heavy backpack on a hot, humid Florida afternoon. So with the Standard Dining Plan, you don’t have to count cash and you get to enjoy a nice, sit down meal every day, along with one counter service meal and snack credits. (This is the one that I always choose because I like to abuse it and dine at as many expensive restaurants as possible without paying the hefty bill!) Tip: The Dining Plan doesn’t include tips, so be sure to include this cost in your Disney budget! But if you would rather eat and run back to the rides, the Quick Service Dining Plan will definitely save you money.

9. Allow Time for Transportation-Did you book a character meal at the Polynesian for dinner, but you’re at Hollywood Studios today? In that case, you need to allow about an hour cushion for you to get from the park to the resort. Buses aren’t always as prompt as guests prefer, especially if you just left before you reached the bus stop; and you also have to account for the time it takes to leave the park and to walk through the resort to make it to your restaurant. Traveling by Monorail? The same rule applies! Monorails can get backed up and even stop on the tracks in certain situations. So don’t miss your reservation, plan ahead!

Bluray Review – Mulan 15th Anniversary Edition 2 Movie Collection

Mulan 1 and 2

I recently had the pleasure of watching Mulan 1 and 2, for the very first time. I knew the story behind Mulan but never actually saw the move. Well I am glad I did because I think I found my new favorite princess.

This Blu-Ray will keep you entertained for hours. You get 2 movies, 11 deleted scenes, 15 backstage featurettes, and 6 music videos. I can’t decide which is more entertaining the bonus features or the actual movies.

I think Mulan is the most under rated and under appreciated princess. I love her because she shows little girls that you can do what ever you put your mind to regardless of what other people tell you, even if it breaks tradition.

Most of us know the story of Mulan but I will give you a quick run down. In Mulan 1, her family tries to train in the proper way to bring honor to her family and how to be a good traditional chinese wife. Soon Mulan’s father is called to duty for the Chinese Army. Mulan knows that her father will not survive this because he is older and not in good health but there are no boys in the family. Mulan seizes the opportunity to bring honor to her family and save her fathers life. Mulan has some issues in boot camp but in true Mulan fashion she puts her mind to it and shows them all that she can be just as good as the guys, if not better. This movie shows that being true to yourself is the most important above all. My favorite part in this movie is the battle scene where Mulan did better than any man in her troop by thinking outside the box. The saddest part was when Mulan leaves the child’s doll behind, I have a soft spot for dolls. In the end Mulan gets the praise and recognition she deserves.

Preparing Your Child for Disney Character Greetings

Character Greeting Woody

We all have a favorite Disney Character and meeting these beloved characters is often the highlight of a trip, for adults and children alike!   But how do you prepare your toddler or young child for their first character greetings?   Often times we have an ideal picture of what these meet and greets should look like, but find ourselves as parents faced with a harsh reality when they occur.

When we took our two year old for his first visit it was my goal to make the character greetings process as enjoyable as possible for our whole family so we tried to prepare him ahead of time.  Here are five simple steps to help prevent the character greeting meltdown!

1.  Watch You Tube Videos of Kids Meeting Characters at Disney Parks: Most kids know their favorite Disney characters from movies and TV, however they look different at the parks then they do on the big and small screen.  Showing them videos of kids meeting the actual characters will set up realistic expectations for the child on what to expect at the character greetings.  It’s as simple as searching for “meeting Mickey at Disneyworld”!

2.  Book a character meal early in your trip: A character meal is a great way to meet characters without wasting time in line at the parks.  You can distract your child with the food while you wait and they will get lots of special attention when the character comes around.   In addition, if your child is freaked out by characters you can easily ask for them to bypass your table. Book this meal early in your trip so you can gauge your child’s response to the characters.  This way you’ll know whether you should focus on character greetings or avoid them during the rest of your trip!

Epcot World Showcase Best Kept Secrets – Morocco

morocco

After enjoying an enchanted time with Belle and the Beast in France, or catching some street performers it’s time to head into a completely different world, Morocco! The land of Princess Jasmine, Aladdin and the Genie.

  • You can take a guided tour of the Morocco Pavilion, there is no charge and the times and availability vary. Just check in at the Tangierine Cafe (the tourism office) or ask any CM at the Markesh Kiosk. It’s takes about 20 minutes.
  • When Walt Disney World approached the king about joining the World Showcase, he was so thrilled he sent over his men to construct it and even paid for it. It did not cost Disney anything to build it. They brought back 19 designers with them from the king to aid in development.

Summer Sizzles with Disney in 2013

sww

Summer 2013 sizzles with exciting new attractions and events at Walt Disney World Resort. Disney Cruise Line returns to Europe with an expanded portfolio of Mediterranean cruises, while Saratoga Springs Resort reopens the doors to a luxurious new spa.  Disney’s “Limited Time Magic” hits full-stride this summer. Plus, Star Wars Weekends let guests release their inner Jedi, and there’s water park fun for the whole family. Here’s what’s in store.

Magical experiences in all shapes and sizes that appear and disappear as the next special surprise debuts will continue with a weeklong Independence Day celebration highlighting the summer season — all part of Limited Time Magic at Disney Parks.

Independence Week: It’s red, white and blue as Disney Parks salutes America with a 4th of July Fireworks Party — for an entire week, with patriotic lighting bathing the Disney castles on both coasts. Mickey Mouse appears in his patriotic finest and guests will find special USA shirts, Ear Hats and other limited-edition souvenirs.

Guests will enjoy an extra dash of pixie dust each week in 2013 when they visit Walt Disney World whether it’s a meet and greet with rarely seen Disney characters, A Chalk Art Festival or a special salute to Father’s Day — the element of surprise enhances the experience.
