Drink Around the World Showcase – Norway Pavilion

Norway Drink Stand at Epcot

Skol! Any Drink Around the World Showcase (DAWS) experience at Epcot isn’t complete without a trip to the Norway pavilion. Your drink choices at this location will determine your DAWS status. Watch out for the shots of aquavit (i.e. vodka) here. Those will get you chock full-o-nuts in no time flat!

Norway doesn’t have a ton of variety in terms of drinks, but those that are there will certainly pack a punch. For a beer or a shot of aquavit, check out the drink cart near the front of the pavilion. The beer served here is Carlsberg (a Danish beer) and Bud Light—neither particularly authentic. But then, do Vikings really care what kind of beer they are drinking?! If you want something to commemorate the experience, you can get beer in a souvenir mug. Other drinks at this stand include: Linie Aquavit Glacier Shots, Wine by the glass, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages. The only snack options here are chips, which are a great accompaniment to a cold beer.

Norway Drink Cart Menu

For additional beverages and a larger variety of snacks, check out Kringla Bakeri og Cafe. This little gem has some Disney food favorites like troll horns, the ever popular School Bread, and Verdens Beste (a rum cake with custard and almond meringue topping). This last delicious treat will count as double points because it contains both food and alcohol. Even if you decide not to imbibe in any alcoholic beverages in Norway, you simply must make Norway a stop on your DAWS experience for the pastries alone. In the winter time, enjoy Bailey’s and Coffee or a Viking Coffee (flavored with Kamora Coffee Liqueur and Bailey’s Irish Cream). They go perfectly with the sweet treats. In the Florida summers stick with beer or wine. If you’re looking for a more substantial meal, you can get a variety of sandwiches. The Norwegian Club with Jarlsberg cheese is a sure winner.

Troll Horn Norway Epcot

For a table service location, you can check out Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, but be warned, this is a character meal. This restaurant is best enjoyed by families and certainly makes for a great place to get together as a group. It features many traditional smorgasbord items like Norwegian meatballs, salmon and rice cream. The same beverages served at the drink cart and Kringla Bakeri og Cafe are served here as well. If you’re looking for a traditional DAWS experience, skip this restaurant and check out the drink cart or quick service location for your best options.

Carlsberg Beer Norway Epcot

And don’t forget to have some fun in the Puffin’s Roost, the shop located in the Norway pavilion. Not only can you find bottles of aquavit to take home, but you can also score some Viking helmets that will make for a great DAWS souvenir! And don’t forget to ride Maelstrom. You’ll be a true Viking before you know it!

Teen Beach Movie: Beach Party Shakes Up Summer Fun at Typhoon Lagoon

Teen Beach movie
Teen Beach movie

Surf’s Up at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park with the grooviest dance party this side of Mt. Mayday. Starting June 24, guests of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park can enjoy a taste of the new Disney Channel Original Movie “Teen Beach Movie” as part of Limited Time Magic.

Happening at various times throughout each day through Sept. 1, “Teen Beach Movie: Dance Party” features a hip DJ spinning remixes of retro tunes, beach-themed games and some really rad “bikers” and “surfers” to party with guests as they dance away the dog days. Taking over part of Typhoon Lagoon’s main beach and wave pool area, guests can join in relays on the sand, hula hoop spinning, water balloon and beach ball tossing, and more fun in the sun activities.

One of two Disney award-winning water parks (Disney’s Blizzard Beach is the other), Typhoon Lagoon features a new generation of water adventures for Walt Disney World guests with the first-ever water coaster thrill ride attraction in Central Florida, Crush ‘n’ Gusher; a 362,000-gallon salt-water coral reef diving environment in which guests can snorkel amidst colorful fish, coral and plant life; and a two-and-one-half-acre wave-making lagoon with surfing-size waves.

“Teen Beach Movie,” is a modern take on classic beach party movies, premieres Friday, July 19 on Disney Channel. Starring Ross Lynch (of Disney Channel’s “Austin & Ally” and Hollywood Records’ R5) and Maia Mitchell (ABC Family’s “The Fosters”) as Brady and McKenzie, surfers who take the last wave of summer, one that mysteriously takes them into a classic beach party movie, Wet Side Story. Brady and McKenzie must try to return to present day, but their lives may be changed forever when they inadvertently change the movie’s romantic storyline.

10 Favorite Secrets of the Magic Kingdom

image20
image20

Walt Disney World Resort is a land of magic, memories, excitement…and secrets!  In fact, they’re all around you when you visit the parks.  Here are just a few of my favorite secrets in the Magic Kingdom, which many guests walk past, over and through without ever noticing.

wd

A MESSAGE FROM WALT DISNEY

Enter the Magic Kingdom and climb the stairs to the Main Street Railroad Station.  Do you hear the old-fashioned telegraph sending a message?  It’s not just any random message, but instead the Morse Code rendition of Walt Disney’s opening day speech at Disneyland on July 17, 1955.

disney

WATCH WHERE YOU STEP

Now make your way to Liberty Square…but be careful where you step.  The brown “river” flowing down the middle of the streets throughout Liberty Square represents the household “waste” which used to flow down the streets of colonial America before the arrival of plumbing.  That may be one Disney attention to detail you didn’t want to know about!

history

A HISTORICAL SECRET

For this next “historical” secret, find the second-story window in the nearby Hall of Presidents façade with the two lit lanterns in each corner.  Pause for a moment and consider where you’re standing…in Liberty Square.  These lanterns were placed by Paul Revere to announce “One if by land, two if by sea.”

lb

A UNIQUE MAGIC KINGDOM EXPERIENCE

Want a truly unique Magic Kingdom experience, as well as a rare souvenir?  Board the Liberty Square Riverboat and ask if you may join the Captain in the Wheelhouse for the voyage.  With his permission, you’ll open a closed door and enter the Captain’s Quarters, an area rarely seen by guests, and make your way up a narrow set of stairs to the Wheelhouse.  Here, you’ll take the wheel to pilot the mighty vessel, as well as pull the cord to blow the Liberty Belle’s loud steam whistle.  Your reward for a successful voyage?  An official Riverboat Co-Pilot’s license to take home as a souvenir!

ts

A FASTPASS REWARD

This next secret rewards guests with a special prize.  At the beginning of each day, Cast Members hide a few paintbrushes throughout Tom Sawyer Island.  Each is covered in whitewash and reads, “Tom Sawyer Paintbrush – In order to complete his chores, Tom needs to whitewash Aunt Polly’s fence.  Unfortunately, in his play time, he managed to lose the brushes all over the island.  If you happen to pick up this brush, please return it to the raft driver.”  Lucky guests who find a paintbrush may return it to the raft driver for a FastPass to Splash Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is valid all day long.

cinderella

CINDERELLA’S FAVORITE HORSE

There are 90 horses on the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, the largest carrousel in North America, but only one is known as Cinderella’s favorite.  How do you find it?  Look for the horse with a gold ribbon on its tail and you will have found Major, the horse Cinderella’s father gave her when she was a little girl.

image14

SIR MICKEY’S SHOP

Did you know there is a towering giant hiding in the Magic Kingdom?  While huge, guests don’t always see him, even when they’re standing right in front of him.  Step into Sir Mickey’s gift shop in Fantasyland and look up at the ceiling.  There you will find Willie the Giant from Mickey and the Beanstalk peeking out at you from under the roof!

image18

DYING FOR SOME WATER

Pause for a moment in the exterior queue line of The Haunted Mansion and see if you can notice anything different about the lawn out front.  Of course…it’s dead!  Disney Imagineers go to great lengths to ensure the landscaping all throughout Walt Disney World Resort is impeccable.  Topiaries are shaped into whimsical Disney characters, flowers are blooming at every turn and all the plants you see are green, lush and well watered…except at The Haunted Mansion.  Here, like the 999 ghosts inside, the lawn has died and is nevermore.

image19

STEP UP, ME ‘EARTIES, YO HO

You may have noticed as you exit many attractions throughout the Magic Kingdom and step upon a moving walkway that there are footprints painted on the walkway to indicate which direction you should proceed.  Take note of the “footprints” Disney Imagineers placed on the moving walkway as you exit the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.  The single boot print followed by a small circle are the markings belonging to a peg-legged pirate!

image20

I’LL HAVE THE FIREWORKS, WELL DONE

At the end of the day, many guests choose to watch “Wishes”, the fireworks spectacular, from Main Street, U.S.A.  This is a great spot to see one of the best shows in the park, as the fireworks appear directly over Cinderella Castle.  However, unknown to many, you can also see “Wishes” from The California Grill, found at the top of the Contemporary Resort just outside the Magic Kingdom.  At the time of the show, the restaurant dims the lights and plays the same music heard in the park.  It’s a unique perspective on this magical attraction.

There are many more secrets to be found in the Magic Kingdom, as well as all of the Disney parks.  Enjoy discovering each one!

MagicBand Accessories

MagicBands have not been fully released to the public just yet, but Disney is releasing more of them to guests who are arriving for resort stays. One can not be left with a naked MagicBand! So isn’t it great news that  MagicBand accessories are now being sold at Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House and the Contemporary Resorts? As of yesterday, you can find them at Fantasia gifts at the Contemporary Resort and Zawadi Marketplace at Animal Kingdom Lodge. These fun accessories allow you to customize your MagicBand in a (surprisingly!) affordable way. This is the first batch to be released – and there are already several different designs to choose from – so you can really personalize your MagicBand. My opinion is that Disney guests may start trading these along with pins and Vinylmations some day soon!

First you have the little accessories that are like the decorations kids put on their crocs. These are called MagicBandits – and they are priced by item. The MagicBandits with three in a box are $6.95 , packs of four are $8.95 , and packs of three or more are $12.95.

CoverBands are $6.95 for one and $15.95 for 3.

“MICKEY MOUSE” COMEDIC CARTOON SHORTS MAKE TELEVISION DEBUT FRIDAY JUNE 28 ON DISNEY CHANNEL

“Mickey Mouse,” a new short-form series of 2D comedy cartoons featuring Disney’s #1 star, will make its television debut with three new cartoon shorts the weekend of FRIDAY, JUNE 28 – SUNDAY, JUNE 30 (8:30 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel. New shorts will continue to roll out with Friday premieres beginning Friday, July 5. Episodes will be available on WATCH Disney Channel, Disney.com, the Mickey Video Player App and iTunes following their linear premiere.

With the slapstick feel of classic Mickey Mouse and contemporary direction and pacing, the series of cartoon shorts presents Mickey in a broad range of humorous situations that showcase his pluck and rascality, along with his long-beloved charm and good heartedness. Each cartoon short finds Mickey in a different modern setting including Santa Monica, New York, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Venice and the Alps, facing a silly situation, a quick complication and an escalation of physical and visual gags. The stories also feature genuine heartfelt and heroic moments as Mickey explores and experiences life with his comical partners: Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto.

Among the cartoon premieres are “No Service,” in which Mickey and Donald try to buy lunch from a beachside snack shack but are unceremoniously turned down because of the classic “No shirt, no shoes, no service” admonition, Friday, June 28; “Yodelberg” where Mickey longs to visit Minnie atop her mountaintop chalet but quickly realizes that the threat of avalanche has made the trek up the mountain more challenging than usual, Saturday June 29; “New York Weenie,” where the hot dog Mickey buys for his beloved and very hungry Minnie ends up taking him on a energetic chase through New York’s Central Park, Friday July 5; “Tokyo Go,” which finds Mickey fighting Tokyo’s crazy commuting crowds aboard the bullet train, Friday July 12; and “Stayin’ Cool,” in which Mickey, Donald and Goofy must find creative ways to keep cool on the hottest day of the year, Friday July 19.

An early sneak preview of the first cartoon short, “Croissant de Triomphe,” in which Mickey must deliver croissants to Minnie’s cafe, battling street traffic and other Parisian obstacles along the way, debuted in March 2013 on Disney.com.
