Tasty kid-friendly recipes are not easy to find, but Yahoo!’s Cinema & Spice offers recipes inspired by Monsters University—in theaters today. Monsters University Homemade Ramen is a healthier alternative to the college favorite that both kids and adults will adore. The sweet and easy-to-make Mike Wazowski Apple Snack is sure to impress, and the yogurt dip can also double as a delicious breakfast treat. Plus, you can even entertain in style with Very Scary Monster Nails.

Mike Wazowski Apple Snacks:

Tasty, kid-friendly recipes are hard to come by, but this one is sure to impress your dinner guests as well as your little ones. The adorable Mike Wazowski apple is easy to make, and the yogurt dip can also double as a delicious breakfast treat!

Ingredients:

1 pink lady, jazzy, or fuji apple, diced

¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

¼ teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon butter

1 cup vanilla yogurt

1 Granny Smith apple

1 slice of provolone cheese

Peanut butter

1 green or blue fruit roll up

Black food safe marker

Almond slivers

5 pink lady, jazzy, or fuji apples, cut into slices

Small round fondant or cookie cutters

Directions:
To make the yogurt dip, combine the diced apple, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and butter in a small pot. Cook on low with a lid on until soft. Remove the cooked apples from the heat and set the, aside to cool. Once cool, add the cooked apple to the vanilla yogurt and stir well. Store the apple dip in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

To make the Mike Wazowski apple, cut a 1 inch round out of the cheese. Use a small amount of peanut butter to secure the eye onto your Granny Smith apple. Next, make the colored part of the eye by cutting a small circle from a Fruit Roll Up and attaching it to the center of the piece of cheese. Use a food safe marker to give Mike a pupil and a mouth. If your apple isn’t standing well, use a knife to cut a small round out of the bottom or back side of the apple to help it stand up. Once the apple is standing up right, use a small knife to cut slits exactly where you want his ears to go. Position an almond sliver for each ear.

TADA you’ve made a Mike Wazowski apple.

Serve your apple slices on a plate with your Mike apple and dipping sauce.

Monsters University Homemade Ramen:

You can keep the noodles from the Ramen package, but use fresh ingredients to make this delicious soup instead of the seasoning packet. Enjoy your ramen in an oversized mug with a slice of lime.

Ingredients:

2 leeks, sliced into rounds

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves of garlic, skinned

3 chicken thighs with bone and skin

1 chicken breast with bone and skin

1 teaspoon salt

3 quarts chicken stock

¼ teaspoon black pepper

2 cup carrot, diced

2 cup peas

2 ears of corn, cut off the cob

½ teaspoon paprika

¼ teaspoon cayenne

4 packages Top Ramen

Lime wedges (optional)

Directions:

Saute the leeks and garlic in a stock pot with the olive oil. Once soft, remove from the pot and brown the chicken on both sides. Once browned, add the leeks and garlic back into the pot with the chicken stock. Simmer for 2 hours until the chicken is tender. Remove the chicken from pot and allow it to cool. While the chicken is cooling, bring the stock to a boil and add the vegetables and the ramen noodles. Cook for 8 minutes. While the noodles and vegetables are simmering, shred the chicken. After the soup has finished cooking, add the chicken back into the ramen and stir to combine.

Serve hot out of your favorite mug with a wedge of lime.

D23 EXPO CELEBRATES THE WONDERFUL WORLDS OF DISNEY WITH INAUGURAL COSTUME CONTEST
Invites Guests at the Ultimate Disney Fan Event to Dress Their Best For Fun and Prizes On Friday, August 9

Since the first D23 Expo in 2009, fans have shown their passion for Disney by dressing up as their favorite and most beloved Disney characters while attending the one-of-a-kind event at the Anaheim Convention Center. This year, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club celebrates that excitement and enthusiasm with the first À La Mode Costume Contest, which will take place Friday, August 9 at 2:30 p.m. in Stage 23.

À La Mode, named after The Incredibles’ couture genius Edna Mode, is the first competition of its kind to showcase fans’ creativity through costumes inspired by all things Disney, including Motion Pictures (Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm); Parks & Resorts; Consumer Products; Media Networks (including Disney Channel, ABC, and ESPN); and Interactive.

Five collectible trophies—specially designed for the À La Mode Costume Contest—will be awarded to the most magical costumes in the following categories: Original Design (or inspired by…), Re-creation, Craftsmanship, Young Fan, and Best in Show.

The contest will be two (2) hours in length, and, therefore, the number of entrants is limited. Guests interested in participating MUST complete an entry from, available now at D23Expo.com. Closing date for entry is July 21. Not all applications for entry will be accepted. Applications will be evaluated on the merits of quality and quantity and selected at the producers’ discretion.

Tickets for the D23 Expo are $57 for a one-day adult admission and $47 for children 3–12. Tickets for members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club are $50 for a one-day adult admission and $42 for children. Multi-day money-saving tickets are also available for both D23 Members and the general public, and D23 Members can save as much as $84 off the price of admission, based on the purchase of four three-day tickets at the D23 Member rate. For more information on tickets and the ticket pricing structure for members and general admission, visit D23Expo.com.

Morning vs. Evening Extra Magic Hours

Extra Magic Hours are Disney’s way of allowing resort guests to enjoy some more magic before the gates open to the general public or after they have closed.  Extra Magic Hours are typically known as EMH on a lot of Disney sites and Facebook groups.  So, let’s talk about which is better-Morning vs. Evening Extra Magic Hours.

Morning Extra Magic Hours

  • The park opens an hour earlier than normal.  If you are an early riser, then these hours are for you.
  • The weather is typically cooler in the mornings, which makes for more pleasant touring.
  • If you have Park Hopper tickets, you can enjoy some early attractions and then hop to another park just in time for opening.  For example, if you arrived at EPCOT when their Morning Extra Magic Hours started at 8:00 am, you could enjoy Soarin’, Test Track, and a few other attractions.  Then, hop the monorail around 9:15 and arrive at Magic Kingdom early in the day.
  • Morning Extra Magic Hours are one hour before the posted park opening, which doesn’t lead to A LOT of touring time.  However, if you keep in mind that you are going to just enjoy a few attractions and then go with the flow the rest of the day, you’ll be pleased with how much you can get done.
  • Get FastPasses for a “must do” attraction for later in the day, AND ride standby with little to no wait.
  • Feel confident that you’ve done a lot of touring, and you can return to the resort for a midday break.
  • Best parks for Morning Extra Magic Hours:  EPCOT and Animal Kingdom

Evening Extra Magic Hours

  • The park stays open up to three hours later than the posted closing time.  If you enjoy the parks at night, and want to experience some of the nighttime spectaculars, these hours are for you.
  • After the heat of the day, it’s fun to be in the parks at night.  The weather is a bit cooler, and many times the crowd has thinned a bit because families are enjoying character dinners, experiencing other nighttime activities like the luau, or have returned to their resorts for some down time.
  • Evening Extra Magic Hours are relaxing.  You can often experience lower ride wait times if you are at the parks during nighttime shows and fireworks.
  • These are a good time to go back and enjoy some attractions you missed during the day or want to do again.
  • Best parks for Evening Extra Magic Hours:  Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios

So what do you think?  There are for sure great things about both Morning and Evening Extra Magic Hours.  Personally, evening at Magic Kingdom can’t be beat.  Especially during the summer months when they schedule the Main Street Electrical Parade, followed by Wishes, and then the MSEP parade again!  No matter how you use them, Extra Magic Hours can be to your advantage when touring the Disney parks.

Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ Gets Honored As Best Film of the Year

It’s been just over a year since  Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ was unleashed in theaters to critical and commercial success, and it seems that the praise doesn’t seem to be stopping there. The film, which I like to count amongst the best of the best in the comic book genre, has now been named ‘Best Film, television, celebrity, or entertainment program of the year’ by the LIMA Licensing Excellence Awards. That’s huge praise, and I’m glad to see the movie still getting praised even a year after it debuted. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Variety on Vacation: FUN for Families at Disney World!

P1080764
P1080764

pirate

If you are anything like me, then going to the Disney Parks NEVER gets old!  Seriously, I think I could go for an entire year and still be smiling (if anyone would like to fund theory testing, I am willing a ready participant).  So if this is you, then you should brace yourself for this next sentence I’m about to type…

Some people get bored on their Disney parks trips.

Today I’m sharing my tips for putting some spice into your Disney trip!  You know they say variety is the spice of life, so today we are talking variety, family style that is!  We are focusing on creating fun for families while at the Disney Parks.  My home park is Disney World, so this article will be aimed at that park, but you can change it up (where needed) for your home park.

Put a theme on it

I love theme days!  As a kindergarten teacher, the possibilities for themed days are endless!  From dressing up like a 100 year old on the 100th day school to dressing from head to toe in red for Red Ribbon Week, I am game!  I love putting a theme on my Disney days too!   For me, Disney theme days can be as broad or specific as you’d like.  Here’s a theme that I came up with off the top of my head:

Theme:

  • Pirate Day

In Park Ideas:

  • Ride Pirates of the Caribbean 10 times in a row!
  • Eat a swashbuckling good meal at Tortuga Tavern
  • Sail over London in a Pirate Ship on Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Since pirates love all things nautical, hit up the best of the best when it comes to water rides:  Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids
  • Spend time with marine friends in EPCOT’s the Seas Pavilion
  • Drink me hearties yo ho!  Take an adult spin on this phrase with some tasty concoctions or for the junior pirates in your life, hit up Club Cool in EPCOT and drink like a king!
  • Throw in a bit of pirate speak!
  • Create a treasure map out of your park map!
  • Head to a Pirates League and get a makeover 😉
  • Live it up in the parks like you own them!  A Pirate’s life for me!!!!

The idea here is that you want something that is doable.  Don’t go so overboard that you feel like you’re working to have fun.  Creating a theme day isn’t about extra work, it’s just about adding a splash of magic.  Theme days crafted around your child or your own interest will be a ton of fun to plan and carry out.

Honor each family member

Honor each family member by including them in the planning process!  If you are making dining reservations or restaurant selections, let each family member have a turn at picking the place!  This is especially good for avoiding the “what about me?????” meltdowns that many trips are prone to.  Give each family member a chance for their voice to be heard by honoring them for the day!  On their day, allow them to select the first ride/attraction of the day, the park to start out in, and the honor of picking where to eat!  Get creative!

Make a game of it

Spontaneity is good!  Make a game out of your trip by creating a random bag.  Write/type the names of rides, attractions, snacks, you name it on slips of paper and stash them in a zip top bag.  When you sense a dull moment (like that is possible at Disney World!!!) or when you just want to have a little fun, draw a slip out of the bag and let that be your guide!  Who knows, you might get crafty and come up with an even better version of this game!

Try something new

Make it a point to try something new each time you are at Disney World!  The possibilities are endless!  Even if you are a Disney die hard fan like me, you’ll find there’s always something new to try!  Maybe there’s a ride or show you’ve never experienced, maybe you’ll try a new restaurant or food, maybe you’ll see something new!  Mark some things off your Disney bucket list!  Trust me, adventure is out there!

I hope these ideas will help to spice up your next trip to Disney World!  Including every member in the planning and execution of a Disney trip is a great way to avoid meltdowns and build memories!  Why not add a little variety to your vacation!  So, what are your strategies to spice things up at Disney?  Share your thoughts below in the comment section!

The Disney Magic arrives today in Piraeus, Greece, the gateway to Athens, where Captain Robert Olmer and shipboard officers are hosting local port officials and community leaders onboard for a traditional maritime plaque exchange ceremony. This event symbolizes the partnership between the ship and the destination in honor of her first call.

The Disney Magic is spending the summer in the Mediterranean for the fourth year, and continues to offer guests visits to new ports, as well as familiar favorites. The ship will homeport in Barcelona, Spain, for the season and offers four-, seven- and 12-night itineraries.

“The Mediterranean continues to be an extremely popular destination for our guests,” said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “The incredible history, culture and beauty of these ports-of-call, combined with the legendary guest service, entertainment and storytelling Disney is famous for, make these itineraries magical. Multi-generational families and guests of every age will experience vacations that they will remember forever.”

Disney Cruise Line
Based in Celebration, Fla., Disney Cruise Line is focused on providing a setting where families can reconnect, adults can recharge and children can experience all Disney has to offer. Most recently, the company was recognized by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine as the top “Cruise Ships of the World,” with the Disney Magic being voted No. 1 and the Disney Dream and Disney Wonder tying for No. 2. It’s High Time for a Pirates and Pals Fireworks Voyage!

DHS Pir Doc Mktg 21 640x427

Fire at Disney

Aaarg! Come along ye faint of heart and strong of might. If’n ye love all pirate mates and long fer a journey out at sea, then this voyage is a must sail fer yer family!

What a magical time our family had when we sailed on a recent Pirates and Pal Fireworks Voyage! If you have a pirate lover in your crew, I would highly recommend booking this adventure. We booked this event 180 days out by calling 407-939-7529. Payment by credit card was due at booking. Cost was $53.99 per adult and $30.99 per child. I was told by the Cast Member that there were no discounts for being a Passholder or DVC member for this voyage because it was so popular that Disney did notneed to give any discounts! The voyage runs Friday through Monday and leaves from the Contemporary Resort for a sail around Seven Seas Lagoon. We were asked to be at the check-in desk at 8:30pm (15 minute prior to the event starting). On the night we sailed, there were 2 boats with row seating each holding 60 people.

Upon arrival at the check-in location, everyone was given a Pirates and Pals bandana that they had to wear so no stowaways could sneak aboard! There were 2 pirate statutes where people could pose and take pictures while we were waiting to enter. Upon rope drop entry, there was a smorgasbord of snacks and drinks to loot and plunder. We were literally told to take as much as we could and fill our packs! There was 4 different kind of ice cream bars, bags of cotton candy, cake, popcorn, pretzels, cookies, chocolate doubloon coins, fruit, coffee, tea, water, and apple juice. After the snacking had settled down, Captain Hook and Mr. Smee came out for pictures. Once pictures were done, Patch and Pat, the pirate captains of the boats, along with Captain Hook and Mr. Smee led us outdoors to the docks where we boarded and headed out across the lagoon and our sea excursion was under way!

Patch the Pirate led our crew out to open water where we stopped to watch the Electric Water Parade close to the Wilderness Lodge. We love watching the Electric Water Parade and it was even cooler to see it from the water. While we were sailing into our water front view of Wishes, Patch was singing, telling tall tales, and asking Disney trivia questions. When the Wishes fireworks began, the music was piped in to the boat so it felt like you were there, just without the large crowds! The last cruise around the lagoon included more sing-alongs and trivia where each child left the boat with a small prize. As we were pulling back in to the dock, there was a surprise meet and greet waiting for us with a special Disney character to finish out a fantastic evening with pirates, new pals, and fireworks.

This event was a fantastic adventure filled with the usual touches of Disney magic. It was so great that we will book it again in the future! Have you or family been on Pirates and Pals Fireworks Voyage? What did you and your family think?
