Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge.  He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Disney presents “Saving Mr. Banks,” directed by John Lee Hancock, produced by Alison Owen, Ian Collie and Philip Steuer, and written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith. Executive producers are Paul Trijbits, Andrew Mason, Troy Lum and Christine Langan. The film will release in U.S. theaters on December 13, 2013, limited, and open wide on December 20, 2013.

AT&T and Disney Parks announced that AT&T is the official wireless provider for Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

AT&T will have various marketing opportunities, including sponsoring Disney-created soccer and runDisney events at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. In addition, Disney and AT&T will educate Cast Members and guests about “It Can Wait®,” AT&T’s initiative to educate people about the dangers of texting while driving. AT&T and Disney will also work together to enhance the experience for guests using smartphones and tablets. Cast Members will use new mobile devices on AT&T’s network to help deliver Disney’s legendary guest service.

AT&T is enhancing its network across Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort using a variety of technologies including:

More than 25 distributed antenna systems to increase the wireless capacity in areas with high mobile traffic.

More than 350 small cells to extend network connectivity

10 cell sites across Walt Disney World Resort to provide wide-ranging mobile service to guests

According to third party data, AT&T now has the most reliable network. They also have a high success rate for mobile content nationwide on 4G LTE Networks.

This is great news if you have AT&T but if you don’t, I guess you will still have to deal with low or no signal.

Reaction to the Marvel Studios Panel Footage – Comic-Con 2013

Loki
Loki

Loki

Every year, I don’t think Marvel could go any bigger than they did the year before when they return to San Diego Comic Con. The yearly pilgrimage from geeks around the world is a big deal, and the driving force behind Marvel’s films, championing the studio and their films every step of the way. In return, Marvel likes to bring the newest, and the best, to Hall H every year, hoping to tide their fan’s appetites until the next con, while leaving them wanting more. This year was no different, and it may have been the most exciting presentation the studio have put together yet. The studio brought with them an Asgaradian, new footage from ‘Thor: The Dark World’, the first footage from ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, and finally, footage from my most anticipated of the Phase 2 films, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Topped off with a surprise appearance by Joss Whedon, it’s safe to say Marvel really brought the house down on Saturday night.

I have to say, first and foremost, Marvel opened the panel in a huge way having Tom Hiddleston come out as his alter ego, Loki, at the beginning of the panel. It was an almost surreal experience, as Loki buttered up the crowed, asking them where their precious Avengers were now, when they want to see new footage from Marvel’s newest films. He then asked the crowd to join his army, and if they did, he’d give us an award, specifically aimed at us. When the crowed went crazy, and joined Loki’s side, he granted us a new look at the new film, ‘Thor: The Dark World’. The footage was absolutely insane. It showed a battlefield, where Sif (Jamie Alexander) is in the midst fending off an a horde of villains, when Thor arrives in the middle of the villain. He ends up going toe-to-toe with a giant creature, who he quickly takes care of by knocking the stone creatures head off. He smiles sly, and says “Anyone else?”. We then saw quick cuts of footage, where he goes and retrieves Jane (Natalie Portman) for the first time, footage where he goes and gets Loki for help, and much more. It gave us a really great idea of exactly what the film will feel like, and it’s much different than the first. It looks much more like an epic fantasy film, more in the vein of ‘Lord of the Rings’ than the fish out of water tale of the first. It definitely looks like it’s going to be bringing it’s A-game, and Marvel looks like they’ve really pulled out all the stops to really delve into Thor and his universe. I’m glad to see them trying to dig deeper into the mythology around the character, because it looks like we’re going to get a much superior film from the first because of it.

Chris Evans

The second film footage that was screened was for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, which looks to be on the epic scale of ‘The Avengers’. That’s no joke, it looks like it’s going to be huge. The film sees Captain America leading his own team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, including the Black Widow and the Falcon, as he goes after the mysterious Winter Soldier, while dealing with the fact he is a man out of time. The footage started with Captain America in an elevator, clearly under arrest by S.H.I.E.L.D., but we don’t know why. He’s surrounded by three guards, but as the elevator ride continues, eventually the elevator fills up to nine guards, and Cap quips, “Before we doe this, does any body want to get out?”. A very close quarters fight breaks out, with Cap fighting off the different guards, and eventually beating them all. He stands amongst all the bodies of the unconscious guards, and kicks his shield up and catches it. This isn’t anything like the pulpy style action from the first film, but more along the lines of things like ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’ style action. This felt very, very much like a spy thriller. We then see Cap talking to a new agent played by Robert Redford, saying that what’s happening now with politics and surveillance in the country, saying “This isn’t freedom, this is fear.” The footage than cuts through some rapid action beats, with Widow fighting guys off by shooting them, Falcon lets his wings out and begins to fly, being chased and shot at by a fighter plane, and eventually the Helicarrier taking a massive blow and falling towards the ground. This is a completely different film compared to what Marvel’s done before. The feel was epic, really on the scale of ‘The Avengers’, and just looked like a ton of fun. This is going to to be one of Marvel Studio’s best films, period. It’s got so much going for it.

Finally, we got our first look at what is my most anticipated film of next year, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. The footage was completely offbeat, fun, and exciting. The movie has only been shooting for ten days, so what we saw was very rough, but it was really cool. The footage starts as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, where he enters a very sacred looking buiding with a glowing orb of some sort. He’s then accosted by some guards, where he quickly spits out, “Cool man, no problem.” He introduces himself as Star-Lord, to which the captors seemed confused by. They ask again who he is, and Quill responds, “Star-Lord? Legendary outlaw…? Forget it…” Then we cut to the Nova Corp, where the Guardians have been incarcerated, and a man named Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) begins introducing and describing all the characters, in the order of Drax, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot (Who is very amusingly described as “House plant/muscle”), and finally, Peter Quill. When a man behind Dey says that Quill goes by Star-Lord, Dey asks who calls him that, and the response he gets is “Mostly himself.” After that, we begun to see lots of action shots of Rocket Raccoon, and his giant Tree friend Groot taking on bad guys, as the rest of the Guardians are fighting everyone around them. The movie looks like so much fun, and so offbeat. It’s not a typical Marvel studios film at all, and looks more in the vein of ‘Star Wars’ than anything they’ve done before. This is going to be the standout film of Phase 2, just because it’s trying to be something we’ve never seen before. The humor is great, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

The Marvel panel concluded with Joss Whedon arriving on stage for one last announcement, where he said “I have nothing to say, but I have something to add.” A teaser trailer began to play, where we hear soundbites from all the characters in ‘The Avengers’, as the camera is on Iron Man’s helmet. But the helmet is being beaten and hammered, changed from what it was. The the camera begins to pan out, and the shape of the helmet has changed, revealing it has become the helmet of Ultron, one of The Avengers’ greatest foes, The title than comes up on screen as ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’. It was a very cool reveal, and one that made sure that the Marvel closed on a very exciting note. I’ve said it before, but I don’t know how Marvel manages to do better than they did the year before. The studio completely understands showmanship and their fans, so it’s great to see them continuing their streak this year at Comic-Con.

Fight breaks out during Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament

Osceola County Police say the fight that broke out during a youth soccer game at the Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament, parents described the scene as an all out riot.

As the final game between an Orlando and a Miami U16 team at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World ended, parents of the local 15- and 16-year-old players said the goalkeeper of the Orlando team was ganged up on and pummeled by several Miami players.

The 16-year-old goalkeeper’s mother said he was transported to Florida Hospital Celebration Health for treatment of a concussion. He was treated and released. The Osceola County Sheriff’s investigative report was not available Saturday night. No one was arrested.

I thought sports were supposed to teach “sportsmanship”. I think they all needed a little extra pixie dust that day.

Making ADRs… From 1 Day to 180 Days (+10) in Advance

DSC 03391
DSC 03391

cm

For the Planner or the Procrastinator… here are some tips to score some great Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) for your upcoming Disney Vacation.

The Planner. If you’re well organized, you’ve likely got everything planned to a “T” for your next Disney trip. Dates picked, Resort reservation made, you even know which parks to visit on which days and where you’d like to eat each meal.

  • Call right at 180 days. You certainly know the drill about calling in (or having your travel agent call first thing) on the morning of 180 days before you check-in. Using this method, you’ll likely get every ADR that you want!
  • Know the “+10 Days” Rule. Sometimes getting those ever-so-popular restaurants such as Be Our Guest or Cinderella’s Royal Table can still be troublesome! The trick to increasing your chances for harder-to-reserve restaurants such as these is to remember the “+10” days rule! On the morning of 180 days prior to check-in, you are allowed (if staying at a Disney Resort) to make reservations for up to 10 days of your trip, all at once!
  • Reserve the Popular Restaurants for the End of your Trip. Plan those more popular meals for later on in your vacation… the later you push that Be Our Guest reservation into your trip, the more likely you’ll actually get it for the time of day that you want it! For example, if you’re visiting Disney for 6 days and want a Be Our Guest reservation… call in 180 days prior to your trip, but reserve Be Our Guest for your 6th day… you will have reserved it 186 days in advance and have a better chance of getting the reservation time that you want!

The Procrastinator. I’m not calling names… in fact, many people don’t even know they’re going to Disney for sure until just a couple of months before their departure. But for those who put off making ADRs or for those who only have two months or less to make ADRs… it can still be done! You likely won’t be able to get into the popular restaurants, but don’t let that discourage you! There are plenty of wonderful meals to be found just about anywhere on Disney Property! You’re not going to be disappointed.

  • Eat Outside of the Parks. Didn’t get into CRT but want to see Cinderella? 1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian offers ‘Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner’ where you can meet Cinderella AND Prince Charming! I just looked at Disney’s Dining Reservations site and there’s availability for this meal tomorrow (and at normal dinner times too)!!
  • Search for ‘Off’ Times. You might not get to eat right at Noon for lunch or 6 PM for dinner. But I’ve found that with all the walking and activity at the Parks, I get hungry earlier than my usual meal times. So, a 10:45 lunch or a 3:30 p.m. dinner isn’t so bad at all! Plus, you just might save some money eating your ‘Dinner’ for the price of Lunch.
  • Be Flexible… Don’t Skip Out on ADRs. You may not get your first choice restaurant, you may not even be able to reserve the time you want… but you can still have a good meal! Once you’ve made a reservation for a Disney Restaurant, research it! (Or research first and then Reserve.) There are many food reviewers/bloggers for Disney Restaurants… research the restaurant and figure out what’s delicious vs. what’s detestable!

So, there you have it. If whether you’ve got 1 day or 180 days to make ADRs… be willing to try alternative restaurants, times, and dishes. It’s Disney after all… you likely won’t be disappointed with whatever you choose! Do you have any Dining tips to add? Feel free to comment below!

Downtown Disney begins Transformation

P1080478

DS

Downtown Disney has begun its transformation into Disney Springs, dining-retail-entertainment district starting with a parking garage.

A portion along Buena Vista Drive will be blocked off for construction of the new garage and parking between Planet Hollywood and Splitsville, and will probably be blocked off sometime this week, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

Some Disney Springs facts:
Downtown Disney officials told the Orlando Sentinel the existing lots should handle a normal day’s activity, but guests can find additional parking in lots across the street at the Casting building and the SunTrust bank building.

This is the first of two garages for Disney Springs and should be open by late 2014 or early 2015.

The Disney Springs project is expected to create 1,200 temporary construction jobs and 4,000 permanent jobs. It  will open in phases and is set to be completed in 2016. It will expand the existing Downtown Disney from 75 to more than 150 shopping, dining and entertainment areas.

Teen Beach Movie Breaks Records

Teen Beach Movie Cover

Teen Beach Movie has made quite the splash. My daughter forced me to watch this movie. It wasn’t as bad as I thought. Disney has been marketing this movie like crazy so I am not shocked to hear that it broke ratings records.

The Disney Channel musical about modern-day teenage surfers trapped inside of a ’60s-era beach film was seen by 8.4 million viewers, according to Disney Channel. That makes it the fifth highest-rated made-for-TV Disney movie of all time, and No. 3 among kids 2-11, behind High School Musical 2 and Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.

“Teen Beach Movie” was the top original movie premiere in more than four years, Disney says. The premiere of 2006’s High School Musical only drew 7.7 million viewers.

So you probably want to know if there is sequel coming? Well director Jeffrey Hornaday told USA TODAY, “I’d direct this movie for the rest of my life.” But Disney Channel Vice President Jennilee Cummings said before the movie’s premiere that it was “too early to tell”.

“Teen Beach Movie” fans can purchase the album, which currently is climbing the charts on iTunes, and order the DVD (out July 30).

Did you watch this movie with the kiddos? What did you think?

Is the Imagination Pavilion Closing?

Hey there kiddies it is I Anonymouse your friendly neighborhood Gossip Columnist.

WOW I have some big Disney Gossip for today. It seems there is a rumor going around the interwebs that Disney plans on closing down the Imagination Pavilion next year.

Reports say that Captain EO will be shut down for good meanwhile Journey to Imagination with Figment will be remodeled or some Phineas & Ferb type ride might take it’s place. Many different sites have bits and pieces right now but overall the general consensus is that something is going to be happening at the Imagination Pavilion very soon.

All these changes are supposed to occur sometime in January of 2014. As of right now on the Disney World Refurbishment Calendar there is nothing listed. So if you are going to Disney in the coming months I would ride Figment a few dozen times. Same goes with Captain EO.

As Chip gets the official word you can bet it will be on the Chip and Co site immediately.

Any who, that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now. For my past Gossip articles be sure to check them out here.

MouseTrips Has Arrived!

MouseTrips has arrived! Who doesn’t love planning a Disney trip? Have you been looking for a way to conveniently save all of your Disney plans in one location on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch? The answer is finally here! For total planning enjoyment, check out the MouseTrips application! The following is a review and description of how to navigate the main sections of the MouseTrips application developed by Enigma Multimedia, LLC based on setting up my next Disney vacation plans in the app. MouseTrips application is available for download through the Apple App Store and costs $2.99. MouseTrips also has a website at www.mousetripsapp.com with a YouTube video.

When you download and initially open the MouseTrips application, you see the Home screen with 3 options to choose: My Trips, Important Info, and Add Trips. You will want to select either Important Info or Add Trips first. When selecting Important Info, you will see options to add a picture from your library by touching the Plus (+) sign in the upper right corner. You can choose to add a picture of your PhotoPass card, Annual Pass, Tables in Wonderland, and Other. Why add a picture of your cards? In case you lose one of them, you will still have a picture to show to Guest Services to help get you operational again quickly. In the Other category, you can add items such as your Key To The World Card, Park Tickets, etc. With the upcoming MagicBands, time will tell how often you may use this feature, but I still think it is a pretty cool option.

When selecting Add Trip, you are adding the overall all location of your trip such as Walt Disney World. You select your Destination from a drop down list, fill in your arrival and departure date, add a free text description or other information. The main address of your destination will be listed at the bottom. You can touch on the address and it links to the maps on your device. How great is that? Once you touch Add Plans, it will tell you your trip is saved and touch the okay button. You can then pick dining, entertainment, flights, ground or hotels to add in your reservations information. It can take a little time to scroll through the date options when adding a plan if your reservation is very far out because you have to go through each day of the month and then each month. Also, don’t forget the save button – it is in the top right corner. For ease of use, there are Home buttons at various points in the application to navigate to the Home screen quickly rather than hitting the Back button several times.

If you need to make a change to your plans or add in a new reservation, simply choose My Trips from the Home screen. Select the trip you added from the above steps and another screen comes up where you touch the Plus (+) sign in the upper right corner. On the next screen when you touch on Add Plans at the bottom of the screen, you can then pick dining, entertainment, flights, ground or hotels to add in your reservations information or select an already entered option to modify and then save. If you want to delete a plan, just swipe towards the left over the arrow when you are in the reservation you entered and a delete button will appear for selection.

Finally, touch the green button with 3 gears in it located at the bottom left of the screen which leads you to Settings. In Settings, you can set a countdown for 3 options – dining, DVC, and your trip, select a new background, and sync your plans to your calendar. Under sync your plans, you will see options to sync dining, entertainment, flights, ground, and hotel. If you have not already entered plans in the steps above, it will tell you that there is nothing to sync. Under count downs, the DVC countdown will list your 11 month (home resort) and 7 month (non-home resort) booking windows. The trip countdown is the actual number of days until the start of your trip. The number of days remaining also shows on the MouseTrips icon. The dining countdown is for Disney World and tells you when you can make dining reservations based on today’s date and then calculates 180 days out. For example, if the date is July 20, 2013, the dining countdown states that I can make a dining reservation for trips starting on January 16, 2014 (180 days from today). All set countdowns will appear on your home page.

Overall, the app was pretty easy to navigate and mostly intuitive. You can obviously do some of the steps described above in a different order, that was just how I went through and set up my upcoming trip on my iPhone. After using this app, you won’t need to write down your itinerary and worry about forgetting or losing it because it will be right with you on your device. The MouseTrips application brings all of your planning information together in one place for the ultimate way to save all of your Disney trip information.  If you are a Disney Addict, the app will surely be put to good use especially since you can load multiple trips. Have you used this app? What do you think of it?

Food Allergy Information Kiosk to Open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

P1080897
P1080897

AK

As someone with food intolerances, I was extremely thrilled to hear the news that a new food allergy information kiosk will be opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on August 4, 2013. Called the “Garden Kiosk,” this will serve as an information center where guests can speak with Disney Cast Members who will help guests with food allergies and intolerances make safe dining decisions. The kiosk will be located in a former snack kiosk location just outside the Adventurers Outpost meet and greet on Discovery Island and will be open daily from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Guests will still be able to consult with chefs and managers at specific restaurants; however, this kiosk will serve as an important resource for guests with special diets at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

In addition to information resources, guests will also be able to purchase pre-packaged snacks for various special dietary needs.  At this time, snacks like hummus, vegetables, granola bars, chips, popcorn and gluten free beer have been mentioned as potential snack options. This will likely become a centralized location for special diets snacks for guests, which can often be difficult to find in various kiosks and quick service locations.

While no additional information has been released, I expect that this information kiosk will serve as the first in a series of kiosks that will be added to the parks. I will be there for the opening on August 4 and will be reporting all the latest special diets news. You’ll find the latest information here on Chip & Co and on Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW.

Do you have a special diet? Are you excited to see this kiosk open?

When Sarah isn’t sharing planning tips about the Walt Disney World Resort, you can find her at the Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW  where she writes dining reviews and shares tips and tricks about dining at Disney with a special diet.
