DIY Disney Drinks – Blue Glowtini & More from 50’s Prime Time Café in Walt Disney World

50's

I recently wrote about the deliciously tropical Lapu Lapu that can be found at ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Resort – and how you can make it at home (yum!). Today, I wanted to go a little more classic, and a little more bright with my DIY Drink – with the Blue Glowtini (a fancy name for a martini with blue Curacao) that can be found at the 50’s Prime Time Café in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Here’s the recipe:

blueglowtini

Ingredients

1. 1 ounce Skyy Citrus Vodka

2. 0.5 ounce Bols Blue Curacao

3. 0.5 ounce Bols Peach Schnapps

4. 1 ounce Sweet & Sour

5. 0.5 ounce Pineapple Juice

6. 1 each Blue Glow Cube (optional)

Directions

1. Build in martini shaker with ice, shake, strain, and pour into glass with sugared rim.

2. Add ice cube

3. Marvel in its beauty as you sip and enjoy

What’s great about the Glowtini is that it’s not too strong, has a little bit of sweet, and best of all – it’s fun to look at! As for the optional glowing ice cube – I have seen these at places like the dollar store, or various other discount stores, mostly around the spring/summer time. With or without that added glow, this drink still packs a punch!

For the kids and other non-alcohol drinkers in your family, fear not – I’ve got a drink for you too – this one is a bit sweeter, and a bit thicker – the Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshake served up at the 50’s Prime Time Café is like dessert in a cup! Check out the (easy!) recipe:

PBJ Shake

Yield: 3 3/4 cups (2 milkshakes, or 1 really big milkshake!)

Ingredients

1. 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter

2. 3 tablespoons grape jelly

3. 1/4 cup milk

4. 3 cups vanilla ice cream, softened

Directions

1. Combine peanut butter and jelly in a small bowl, mixing well

2. Combine milk, ice cream, and peanut butter mixture in container of an electric blender

3. Process mixture until smooth, stopping once to scrape down sides

4. Pour into cup, not in between two slices of bread

Maybe you will want to whip up some of the Café’s famous Mom’s Meatloaf or perhaps some of Aunt Liz’s Fried Chicken to go along with your drinks? No matter what you decide to serve alongside them, these drinks will bring you right back to that table where your server told you to “keep your elbows off the table!” and “finish your vegetables!”

5 Activities to Enjoy at Disney World Before Your Children Grow Up and Leave Home

des

Like Peter Pan, some children just never grow up.  Yet, we all know that’s not the reality of life.  It’s easy to feel like a child when visiting the Disney Parks, and seeing the delight in your children is a feeling like no other.  But, they grow up, change, and so does their park touring.  Before you know it, you’re skipping past the Princess Meet & Greet, and running to Splash Mountain for a FastPass.  Or, you’ve packed the autograph books, but while in the parks your children don’t want to stop and pose for a picture and autograph.

Life happens, but today I want to share with you some Activities to Enjoy at Disney Before Your Children Grow Up-and Leave Home.

  • Take a family tour.  Walt Disney World offers many behind the scenes tours that are perfect for families.  Many of them have an age requirement, such as 10 and up.  These tours, such as Behind the Seeds, Keys to the Kingdom, and the Magic Behind our Steam Trains Tour can be great opportunities to enjoy with older children-who may not see the fun in riding Dumbo countless times anymore.
  • Take a specialty cruise.  The Pirates and Pals Fireworks Voyage or the Pirates Adventure Cruise are both fun activities for your family.  These set sail from various resorts on Disney property.  They are opportunities to enjoy the fireworks, or some Disney magic, in a bit different way.
  • Eat around the World Showcase.  Young children can have picky palates.  But, the older children or teenagers in your family might find it fun to try foods from different countries.  Even if it’s candy, or other fun sweet treats like caramel corn, from the shops, it gives some entertainment, and some conversation when eating around the world.
  • Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party.  Reservations for this open later, after the 180 day mark for your trip, and fill up quickly.  This experience is unforgettable, and will give your family some down time while enjoying Wishes from a special seating area, just off Main Street USA.
  • Enjoy the Christmas Season at Walt Disney World.  The Candlelight Processional, visiting the resorts to enjoy their decorations, and even the storytellers in each country in EPCOT.  Also, the countries in EPCOT represent themselves with their traditional “Santas”.

How do you incorporate Disney magic with your children after they feel too old to enjoy some of the “normal” park attractions?  Have you ever taken part of these activities?

Have a magical day!

California Grill Re-opens in September at the Contemporary Resort

New California Grill
New California Grill

New California Grill interior

The California Grill, originally opening at Disney World Resort in 1995, reopens this fall after a transformation with a design inspired by mid-century modern California, and a new redesigned menu.

The re-imagined California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort debuts September 9, with reservations open starting August 26th with amazing views of the Magic Kingdom from the top of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

The newly renovated restaurant features dishes like baked local prawns with charred lemon and wild Columbia River salmon with Zellwood sweet corn pudding. Sushi is showcased with a new, multi-course omakase menu featuring pristine seafood. The wine list has been expanded with about 250 wines on the list, 80 by the glass. There also are 10 varieties of sake, eight kinds of craft beers and ciders, and signature cocktails created just for California Grill.

Sounds like an amazing atmosphere but I am not sure about the food. What do you think?

Disney Planes Enlist The Military

Disney Planes logo

Landing in theaters nationwide Aug. 9, “Disney’s Planes” displays a ton of military references. Filmmakers wanted to ensure authenticity by enlisting the U.S. Navy and other retired and former military personnel during the making of the film.

Members of the production team visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Producer Traci Balthazor-Flynn joined Hall and a few other members of the team, observing target practice, plus a number of takeoffs, including a Hornet, helicopters and C-2 Greyhound cargo planes.

Said Capt. Paul Spedero, executive officer, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), “When we host guests at sea, it’s our sincere hope that in providing access to the ship, crew and daily operations of an aircraft carrier, it will provide them a unique and authentic perspective on what it means to be a Sailor in the U.S. Navy. We answered all of the questions the team had about different aspects of ship operations because we had a common goal—an accurate portrayal of the U.S. Navy.”

Filmmakers sought a number of resources to perfect the jargon utilized between fighter jets Echo and Bravo. Among them were Lt. Cmdr. Jim “Fanus” Mittag from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron THREE-ZERO (VX-30) at Naval Base Ventura County, and longtime pilot Sean Bautista, a former Air Force top gunner in the 194th Squadron with 16 years of military flying experience (including F16 and F4 fighter jets) and 27 years as a professional pilot for the major airlines.

Celebrating all service men and women, Disney Studios rolled out a series of special screenings of “Disney’s Planes” for military families coast to coast.
