Princess Fairytale Hall to Open Its Doors September 18th

Princess Fairytale Hall

A few weeks ago we shared details about the all new Princess Fairytale Hall and how it was opening this fall. Reported today Walt Disney Imagineers are busy putting the finishing touches on this all new Character Meet & Greet. This exquisitely detailed Disney Princess character greeting location is the next to debut as a part of the New Fantasyland expansion – and we’re happy to share today that the Hall will officially open its doors on Sept. 18.

Our friends at Walt Disney Imagineering just shared a new sneak peek video with us in honor of today’s announcement. In it, Imagineers Pam Rawlins and Jason Grandt explain just how detailed this new character greeting area will be. In addition to a castle-like entrance, high ceilings and elegant wood-paneled rooms, the space will feature beautiful princess portraits, themed wallpaper, glittering stained glass windows and accessories that have been inspired by props seen in films like “Cinderella” and “Tangled.”

As a reminder, Princess Fairytale Hall will offer two separate character greeting experiences, which means there are two queues to choose from. You can choose to meet either Cinderella or Rapunzel, each of whom will be joined by one fellow Disney princess.

And yes, Princess Fairytale Hall will offer both traditional Disney FASTPASS and the new Disney FastPass+ options.

California Grill Takes Disney Restaurant Scene to New Heights, Reopening Sept. 9

Earlier we released some beautiful photos and videos from the all new California Grill in case you missed them.

With sweeping views of Walt Disney World Resort from the 15th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, California Grill opens its doors on September 9 following a major makeover that redefines Disney’s culinary scene.

The spacious dining room is transformed with a modern style that captures the spirit of California throughout the design scheme.

Cuisine, too, has been reimagined with seasonal ingredients and a lighter touch, such as baked local prawns with charred lemon and wild Columbia River salmon with Zellwood sweet corn pudding. And the sushi bar expands with a multi-course omakase menu featuring pristine seafood.

“Food and beverage offerings at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts have evolved considerably over the years and play an integral role in the memories guests make with us,” says Maribeth Bisienere, vice president of Food & Beverage and Merchandise for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts.

“More than ever we are applying the same principles of creativity and attention to detail that guide our theme park experiences to the development of our food and beverage offerings. The new menu, décor and ambiance at the iconic California Grill continue that evolution.”

Across four theme parks and 25 resort hotels Walt Disney World Resort boasts an amazing and diverse portfolio of dining experiences. From healthy offerings to celebration foods, from a quick bite to an elegant table service meal, guests have a variety of choices unrivaled among vacation destinations, enjoying an experience only Disney can deliver.

Eye-Catching Interior

When guests step out of the elevator on the 15th floor, the postcard-perfect panorama view is the first sensation.  Whether watching the sun dip slowly over the Seven Seas Lagoon or the bird’s-eye perspective of the Magic Kingdom, diners know it’s going to be a memorable evening.

“The wall of windows and the vast horizon reminded the interior designers of mid-century modern California residences high up on hilltops,” says Eric Jacobson, senior vice president of creative development, Walt Disney Imagineering. Mid-century modern describes mid-20th century design from about 1933 to 1955, a form that flourished in the 1950s and ’60s.

“The prime position atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort really spoke to us,” Jacobson continues.  Warm oranges and yellow hues inspired by the magical sunsets of both California and Florida are foundational colors. A touch of Disney from that era is incorporated into the carpet design reminiscent of the sketches of artist and Disney Legend Mary Blair, who created the character designs for Disney attractions such as it’s a small world, and inspired the100-foot-high colorful mosaic tile art on the fourth floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.  Reproductions of Blair’s original artwork also are displayed.

A show-stopping wine display as guests exit the elevator houses 1,600 bottles in a dramatic, climate-controlled, state-of-the-art showcase. Focal piece at the entry is an oil painting of California’s Napa Valley by California landscape artist Ann McMillan.

Stretched fabric artwork also adorns the walls, expanding the color palette with bright, fun prints. Replicas of mid-century modern ceramics, as well as all-new custom lighting with colorful globes complement the vibe.

One of the most challenging renovations was replacing the massive windows with new ones that block ultraviolet light, and installing electronic shades for ultimate guest comfort. At night, the Magic Kingdom fireworks still are part of the show, with music piped in at two outdoor viewing areas – one on the northwest side, another new deck on the southwest side.

The onstage kitchen is all new, including space to hold the stack of wood for the wood-burning oven, “bringing organic nature into the space,” says Jacobson. The popular sushi bar has been expanded with beautiful new display cases that show off the beauty of the fish.

Dining room highlights include two new communal tables, each seating 10, strategically positioned at the north end of the dining room for optimal fireworks viewing. The 10-foot teak tables get a touch of color from hot pink chairs with leather seats, a bold departure from the rest of the room with linen-draped tables and wooden chairs.

Servers in crisp silver shirts, black slacks and classic mahogany bistro aprons with silver pinstriping add an air of casual elegance to the dining room. The Napa and Sonoma private dining rooms are still available for private functions, and the private, glass-walled wine room in the main dining room has been renamed the Monterey Room.

The Menu

“California Grill always will be a place that’s creative, seasonal, sophisticated and fun,” says Chef de Cuisine Brian Piasecki. Piasecki spent nearly a year perfecting a new menu “that’s all about the composed dish, tastes that are designed to complement each other” he says. For instance, Pacific halibut with parsnip silk, roasted heirloom beets, arugula, macadamia vinaigrette and beet syrup: “taste the silky puree, the salt-roasted beets, the delicate fish, crunchy macadamia nuts . . . together it’s a symphony,” says Piasecki.

The new menu updates longtime favorites, such as Pork Two Ways, now grilled tenderloin and lacquered pork belly with goat cheese polenta and mushrooms. The oak-fired filet of beef is served with heirloom tomato risotto, marinated baby vine tomatoes and basil. Sonoma goat cheese ravioli returns in a tomato fennel broth with crispy shiitake mushrooms.

From the wood-burning oven, a “Surf & Turf” includes New Smyrna, Fla., clams, saffron-infused fennel, chorizo butter and bone marrow. Baked local prawns are served with charred lemon, arugula, and tomato and cippolini onion relish.  Signature meatballs come with picholene olives, herbed orzo and chimichurri. Flatbreads are still on the menu, including a version with beefsteak tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala and balsamic vinegar, and a pork pate flatbread with roasted garlic, mascarpone cheese and Royal Trumpet mushroom chips.

Popular sushi expands with a 12-course omakase menu that includes a tasting of the restaurant’s freshest ingredients (not just fish and seafood). Omakase means “to entrust,” and there’s no menu. “You just let the chef prepare fresh sushi dishes for you, perfect for sushi fans who want to try new tastes,” says Piasecki.  The menu might include ama ebi (sweet shrimp) tempura, lobster sashimi, crunchy Japanese bone marrow with sesame beef tartare and red onion marmalade, and spicy-crusted oysters.

“Seasonal dishes and traditional sushi are combined for an exceptional experience,” says Piasecki.

Pastry Chef Jeff Barnes has a whole new menu of sweet endings, such as a light, refreshing Meyer Lemon cheesecake, chocolate pudding, and his favorite, the Sundae Sampler, a trio with a Coke float, strawberry sundae and caramel corn sundae. “Such great flavors on one plate,” he enthuses.

Barnes also created two new breads just for California Grill – a whole-grain sourdough and a lavender-infused focaccia made with fresh California lavender, olive oil and herbs.

Wine & Cocktails

Known for its solid wine list, California Grill, under the guidance of sommelier Michael Scheifler, has expanded selections, with about 250 wines on the list, 72 percent from California, another 22 percent Old World wines and 6 percent New World wines.

“We’ll have something for every palate,” says Scheifler, “from a first-growth Bordeaux to a boutique wine from Oregon or South Africa, there are some really special, highly allocated bottles.”

There are 80 wines by the glass, expanded from 50 on the previous menu. More than 20 sommeliers on staff will make pairing easy.  The expanded sushi bar gets an expanded sake list, with nine varieties, from a light, sparkling sake to cask strength, says Scheifler. And there are eight kinds of craft beers and ciders on the new menu, mostly from California.

And signature cocktails are recipes created by staff mixologists, from a bold sake martini to a breezy cucumber drink and a San Fran Pisco Sour – and the California Grill is the only Disney restaurant that serves the creations.

Cheese boards pair nicely with beverages, including Point Reyes (Calif.) blue; sharp, earthy Petit Agour from the French Basque region; Cypress Grove (Calif.) black truffle cheese; MT TAM triple cream from California, and SeaHive from Utah.

California Grill opens at 5 p.m. daily for dinner.  For more information or to book a reservation, visit www.disneyworld.com/dine or call 407-WDW-DINE (939-3463).

DIY Disney Drinks – The Animal Kingdom Lodge Edition

In case you missed my Disney Drink post last week about the Blue Glowtini you can check it out here

There are tons of great ways to get ready for your Walt Disney World vacation, but one of my personal favorites is to recreate some of my favorite Disney Drinks at home! I love heading over to Disney’s beautiful Animal Kingdom Lodge for dinner at Boma or Jiko, or even just to say hi to the animals! Jiko’s cocktail menu is a personal favorite of mine – and I wanted to share with you how you can recreate two of their top sellers at home!

There’s the Sunriser, which blends some delicious fruit flavors (orange/banana/pineapple/cranberry) into a refreshing treat:

Sunriser

Ingredients

1. 1 1/4 ounce of Parrot Bay coconut rum

2. 1/2 ounce of banana liquor

3. 3 ounces of orange juice

4. 3 ounces of pineapple juice

5. 3 ounces of cranberry juice

Directions

1. Pour 1 1/4 ounce coconut rum and 1/2 ounce banana liquor into an ice filled glass

2. Fill glass with equal parts orange juice, pineapple juice and cranberry juice

If you’re in the mood for more of a “dessert” drink, then you may want to whip up some Zebratinis – which feature chocolate and coffee flavorings

zebratini

Ingredients

1. 1 ounce Stoli vanilla vodka

2. 1 ounce Godiva white chocolate liqueur

3. 1 ounce Frangelico

4. 1 ounce Amarula cream liqueur

5. 2 ounces (1 shot) espresso

6. whipped cream, optional

Directions

1. Stripe a martini glass with chocolate syrup.

2. Combine first 4 ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously.

3. Strain into striped martini glass. Shake espresso shot in shaker with ice and strain into center of martini.

4. Top with a layer of whipped cream if desired.

Sugar, caffeine, alcohol – this one has it all! And speaking of sugar…and alcohol…maybe you will want to whip up some delicious Zebra Domes to go with your drinks? Then you will really feel like you’re hanging out at the Animal Kingdom Lodge – and I can’t think of a better way to get excited for your next WDW trip!

Where to Stay at Walt Disney World Resort with a family bigger than FOUR?

HALLOWEEN AT WALT DISNEY WORLD

Recently, I have had many clients that have large families or are traveling with extended family.  Trying to decide the best option for resorts can prove a challenge at Walt Disney World.  When you have grandparents traveling with you, it can bump your family up to an even larger number.

Here is the lowdown on which Disney Resorts will fit your happy gaggle at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Value Resorts:

You have several options here.  If you are a family of 6 or less, the family suites at both Art of Animation and All Star Music are great options.  The master bedrooms have queen sized beds which is unlike any of the other value resorts.  There is plenty of room for everyone to sleep and even has a kitchenette to make breakfasts and snacking a piece of cake.  Another item to note – this configuration allows for 6 people plus one child under age three in a crib…totaling an actual 7.

Another option is to book adjoining rooms.  This can be your most cost effective option, keep in mind you cannot connect a suite to a standard room….nor can you connect two suites.  Here’s the kicker – adjoining rooms can only be requested – but if you make sure to specify that the one room will have only the kids in it, they will do everything short of giving you a magic wand to make sure your rooms are connecting.

Moderate Resorts:

Here is the sweet spot for families of five – if you have two adults and 3 kids, at least one being under the age of 10 (depending on their size)…Port Orleans Riverside is a fantastic option.  They have rooms that have 2 queen beds as well as a trundle bed for your littlest prince or princess.  It’s a great room and solves the problem for most families of five.  Additionally, this configuration allows for 5 people plus one child under age three in a crib…totaling an actual 6. (If you have a baby.)

Another option at the moderate resort level are the Cabins at Wilderness Resort.  These are very, very cool.  Don’t worry – it’s not camping.  Although they are log cabins in the woods, they have every amenity and do not require a sleeping bag!  Excellent for larger families, Wilderness Cabins feature such amenities as a living room, full bathroom, private patio, charcoal grill and fully equipped kitchen. The Cabins are spacious enough to comfortably sleep 6 adults.  They include: 2 double beds and 1 bunk bed.  Unfortunately…no queen beds in this set up.

Finally, you can request two adjoining rooms.  Always an option!

Deluxe Resorts:

At the deluxe level, you have many more options.

At the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Yacht Club, Boardwalk Inn, and Grand Floridian,  a limited number of Suites are available. These suites have a four-to-eight-person occupancy per suite, depending on the type of suite.

At the Contemporary and  Polynesian, suites have a five-to-nine-person occupancy per suite, depending on the type of suite.

At the Beach Club, Yacht Club, and Wilderness Lodge, suites have a four-to-six-person occupancy per suite, depending on the type of suite

Deluxe Villas – these are an animal unto themselves.  They offer studios, one bedroom, two bedroom, and Grand Villas.   Technically,  these accommodations are a part of the Disney Vacation Club community, but are available for non-members to rent for most of the year.  Although pricey, these villas are probably your very best bet if you are traveling with a family reunion or larger group that wants to stay all together in one space.  Their configurations are very generous, offer kitchens, laundry facilities, and are the fastest growing segment of Disney Resorts.

Picking a resort to accommodate a larger group can be tricky, but there are plenty of options if you just know where to look!

Do you need help booking your group or larger family at Walt Disney World?  Cameron Fisher is a Travel Specialist with Destinations in Florida, an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner.  Providing tips for traveling with a large family or group is Cameron’s favorite niche.  You can contact her at: [email protected]

With sweeping views of Magic Kingdom fireworks from atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort, the re-imagined California Grill also features a new design inspired by mid-century modern California, and a new menu showcasing seasonal ingredients and a lighter touch.

Known for its stellar wine list, the restaurant now boasts about 250 wine selections, 80 by the glass, an expanded sake list, eight kinds of craft beers and ciders and signature cocktails created by staff mixologists.

California Grill is set to open September 9th.

Feld Entertainment, Inc., producers of Disney On Ice and Disney Live!, is taking  top performing cable TV series for preschoolers to the stage in Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure. Featuring characters from the smash hits Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates, this brand new production launched a 90-city national tour starting back in July.

The Feld Entertainment mission of providing quality live entertainment experiences that the entire family enjoys starts with Disney Live! because it is often a young fan’s first theatrical experience,” said producer Alana Feld.  “Children everywhere are falling in love with Sofia and Jake, and we are thrilled to bring these popular Disney Junior characters to the stage for the first time ever.”

In this original storyline, Mickey and Minnie lead the audience on an exciting adventure that will have families rooting for their favorite pirate Jake and Disney’s first little girl princess Sofia. Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure begins with a special interactive pre-show featuring the loveable 6-year-old doctor to toys and stuffed animals, Doc McStuffins. Children and their parents will sing “The Check-Up Song” along with Doc as she provides tender love and care.

Audiences will then embark on a journey to the magical world of Enchancia, where Sofia, her step-siblings Amber and James, and the entire kingdom are preparing for the annual friendship festival. Sofia has the honor of delivering the perfect gift to her royal subjects at the celebration, and the one-and-only Cinderella visits the castle to help Sofia in her mission to find just the right present.

The excitement continues when families cast away to Never Land where Jake and his Yo Ho pirate friends Izzy and Cubby are in a race against time to locate a mysterious treasure-filled volcano. Danger, thrills and adventure lurk around every turn when our swashbuckling friends battle Captain Hook for the ultimate prize. Peter Pan makes a special appearance, aiding the team in their heroic quest, and with the help of Tinker Bell’s pixie dust, Jake and his crew fly above the stage in their journey.

Disney looking to discontinue Guest Assistance Card

gac

gac

Everyone remembers the news story from this past summer of the abuse of the Guest Assistance Card or GAC at the Disney Parks. Since then Disney has been looking for a way to phase out of the current system and put something new in it’s place.

My writer Sunshine was at Walt Disney World yesterday and went to pick her GAC due to her disability and found out that Disney has lowered the length of the Guest Assistance Card from 2 months to 2 weeks for guests (see image). Anonymouse spoke of the changes coming a few months ago and it looks like change is coming.

While the Customer Service staff would not release full details they did mention the GAC will somehow work together with your Magic Bands.

Keep in mind this is not official just like our post earlier this week about Fast Passes, but we all knew change was coming… As soon as we get more details or the Official Word from Disney we will have it here on Chip and Co.

*Update from Sunshine*

I was told they will be phasing out very soon. He said pass holders will get one good for 2 weeks and than just one day and then no more. They are replacing it with something else so while the GAC will be gone they will have something better he said. It will have to do with Magicbands and your picture may be involved to avoid fraud.

Get a First Look at Some ‘Iron Man 3’ Bonus Features

In anticipation of the September 24, 2013 release date of ‘Iron Man 3’ on Blu-ray and DVD, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures have released two new clips from some of the special features on the upcoming release. ‘Iron Man 3’ is, so far, one of my favorite films of the year, and I really can’t wait to add this one to my collection. As a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is probably tied for favorite in the series for me, just up there with ‘The Avengers’.

The first clip from the blu-ray release is from the gag reel, while the second features Ben Kingsley as he messes with different accents for his character, The Mandarin. They’re fun, and they’re making me anticipate this release even more. Did you like ‘Iron Man 3’? Will you be adding it to your collection? Let me know in the comments below, only here at Chip and Company, and enjoy the clips below.

Did you know that you can write a letter to YOUR favorite Disney character?  And in return, you’ll get a postcard from them?  Even better, the postcard will be autographed!  With a little planning on your part,  your children can receive some fun snail mail from their favorite characters!

Why would you want to send a letter to a Disney character?

  • Your child is having a Disney themed birthday party, and the postcard would make a cute surprise in the mail.
  • After you make your ADRs for a dining experience, request a postcard from the address below.  When it arrives, you’ll have something fun to build anticipation of your upcoming vacation to Walt Disney World!
  • It can teach your child how to write letters, and then enjoy having something in the mailbox just for them!
  • It’s been a long time between trips to Walt Disney World, and you want to keep some of the magic alive.

Have more than one child?  They can each write a letter, or you can write one for them, and they’ll get a post card of their own!  The post cards make great keepsakes for scrapbooks, or even on the bulletin board in your child’s room!  Keep in mind that it takes 4-6 weeks to receive your card back in the mail.  Also, the characters on the post cards are princesses or classic Disney characters…many of the elusive characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Nemo, Woody & Jessie, etc., are not on the cards.

You can send your letters to:

Top 10 Best Disney World Tips for the Best Vacation EVER!

P1050574
P1050574

peter

Everyone can use a good tip or two, right? I’m always eager to hear some new Disney World Tips; and so today, I thought I would share a few of my favorite tips that I’ve gathered from my trips to Walt Disney World. Enjoy!

10. Water Shoes-If you’re planning on visiting Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach, water shoes are a must! The pavement is usually blistering hot and can be very painful when going from one slide to another or waiting your turn in line. For a more enjoyable experience, definitely invest in some water shoes.

9. Always ride Peter Pan’s Flight, Toy Story Midway Mania, Test Track, and Soarin’ Early-If you want a chance to ride these popular attractions without waiting  a long, long time, head to these attractions first thing in the morning, preferably right after the park opens. If you can, grab a FastPass too so you can enjoy them again later.

8. Meet Lilo and Stitch at Typhoon Lagoon-Did you know that there are some characters you can meet at the water parks? At Typhoon Lagoon, you can meet up with Lilo and Stitch and there’s rarely ever a long line.

7. The Magic of Disney Animation-This attraction is located at the rear of the Animation Courtyard and offers a cute show about Disney animation. The really great part comes after the show, where you enter a large indoor area to play interactive games, take a great art class, and check out several character meet and greets at your own pace! This area is air conditioned, indoors, and also offers quite a bit of seating. It’s a great place to escape the rain, to rest, and to let kids run free. If you don’t want to see the show, just enter through the door at the back of the attached art store.

6. Liberty Tree Tavern Décor-One of our favorite Magic Kingdom restaurants is Liberty Tree Tavern, a colonial style restaurant that serves up hearty, American dishes such as the Pilgrim’s Platter and their famous Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake! Many guests don’t realize that each room of the restaurant is themed after an early American hero, such as John Paul Jones, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, and more. It’s fun to try to figure out which room you are seated in, as well as expose the kids to a little history lesson in a fun way!

5. Use the International Gateway-Found between the France and United Kingdom pavilion at Epcot’s World Showcase is the International Gateway, a small entrance/exit to the park. Once you pass through this gateway, you can board a small ferry boat, or take a walking path, and visit the Yacht and Beach Club, the Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin, and then Hollywood Studios. This extra gateway can save you some transportation time, as well as provide easy access to the Epcot Resorts and the entertaining Boardwalk.

4. Use the Quiet Pools-Most Disney Resorts have a quiet pool in addition to their main pool. Since most guests, and especially kids, head towards the main, themed pools, you can often have a pool to yourself with this alternative option. Value Resorts don’t offer quiet pools, but they typically have more than one. I suggest heading towards the smaller pools to avoid crowds, such as the Bowling Pin pool at Pop Century or the Little Mermaid pool at the Art of Animation.

3. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Night-One of my favorite ways to enjoy Wishes is while riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The lofty view is amazing and makes you feel closer to the colorful display; and if that’s not all, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad feels faster and is like a different experience at night. Trust me, you won’t forget this wildest ride in the wilderness under the fireworks!

2. Do the Opposite of Extra Magic Hours-Do you usually take advantage of extra magic hours? While they’re great in some ways, it can be a good idea to skip them and visit that park the next day. For example, if the Magic Kingdom has extra magic hours on Monday, go somewhere else that night and then go to the Magic Kingdom on Tuesday. Why? Crowds tend to flock to the park with the extra hours. Therefore, if you go on Tuesday, the crowd levels should be low because everyone was there the night before!

1. Movie Under the Stars-Most Disney Resorts offer this great experience, a Disney movie outdoors on the resort grounds! Your resort will have this experience listed in their schedule and will set up a large screen either on the beach or in a open area. Bring a beach blanket, some snacks, and relax! The best part? This experience is free!

Do you have any Disney World tips to share?
