Top 10 Favorite Disney Ride Vehicles at Walt Disney World

Disney rides and attractions are meant to transport you into your favorite Disney film, to a different place in time, or to the African Savanna or even under the sea! But how do they take you from the long, snaking lines and actually into these stories and experiences? By their ride vehicles of course! But not all ride vehicles are created equal, and some play a huge part in the story the Imagineers are trying to tell, or even become icons of the rides themselves! Ride Vehicles range from bouncing honey pots and spinning tea cups to hang gliders and falling elevators! That’s why today I’m sharing with you my Top 10 Favorite Ride Vehicles!

10. Dumbo-This attraction is a Disney icon and childhood rite of passage! Dumbo, of course, has to make my list because where else would you get to ride an elephant, especially one that flies?

9. Soarin’ Hang Gliders-So when you first hear that Soarin’ is about hang gliding over California, you naturally begin to wonder just how are the Imagineers gonna pull this one off. The answer is the Soarin’ Hang Gliders consisting of rows of long bench seats with awnings overhead which are lifted up towards a massive bowl screen to let you experience what it’s like to soar! (while sitting down, that is!) These vehicles gently tilt and tip, making you feel as if you really are flying! It’s exhilarating, but yet calm and soothing. No wonder it’s so popular!

8. Pirates of the Caribbean Boats-I really like the spacious, roomy boats on Pirates of the Caribbean. Although, to be honest, there are very few things that I don’t like about this ride! I like how the boats set you close to the water, and how easy it is to see the scenery, and I especially like having a whole boat to myself when I ride near closing time! There has been a lot of news about the refurbished boats, as they have been getting guests wet; but despite that, there’s no better way to enjoy this classic ride than in a roomy boat floating past those classic pirate scenes!

7. Splash Mountain Log-For this Southern style ride, you hop aboard a log to float in and out of Chickapin Hill before being sent sliding down into the Briar Patch! Also, be sure to look at the front of the log to see a small Brer Rabbit too, the hero of this tale!

6. Rock n’ Roller Coaster Limo-A super-stretch limo is what it really is!  Yes, the ride vehicle for this adrenaline-packed, rockin’ ride is a limousine; and if that wasn’t cool enough, each seat has high-tech speakers! So yeah, it definitely makes this list.

5. Kilimanjaro Safaris Vehicle-Once you hop aboard this safari truck, you may forget that you’re in Central Florida! Disney really did an amazing job with this attraction. It’s about as realistic as a safari can get without actually being in Africa. The safari vehicles themselves are detailed, with gear packed onto the side, and they even have wildlife guides displayed inside to help you name and identify the animals you find all around you! No need to strategize about which side of the vehicle to sit as both sides offer close-up views of the animals!

4. Spinning Tea Cups-One of the most original ride vehicles ever, Fantasyland’s Mad Tea Party lets you board giant teacups that spin! This ride is simple, silly fun, a classic Disney attraction, and somewhat of an icon!

3. Jungle Cruise Boats-These vintage, detailed boats are unique in that they offer seating all the way around and feature a Cast Member/Jungle Cruise Captain at the helm. These captains are there to safely navigate you through the world’s waterways, as well as to crack some corny, classic jokes that are as much of a part of this ride as the audio-animatronic wildlife! The Jungle Cruise boats also sport some chuckle-worth names too, such as Senegal Sal, Nile Nellie, and Congo Connie!

2. Tower of Terror Elevators-The Tower of Terror elevators are the centerpiece of this attraction’s story and they are pretty high-tech too! I mean, these elevators not only move up and down, but also horizontal, and are dropped in random sequences that you can’t predict all while keeping you safe!

1. Peter Pan’s Flight Pirate Ships-I’ve always had a soft spot for Peter Pan’s Flight. It was, after all, my favorite Disney World attraction as a kid; and you can’t deny its impressive history as an opening day attraction. What sets Peter Pan’s Flight apart from the rest is its pirate ship ride vehicle. Unlike boats or vehicles on ground tracks, Peter Pan’s Flight’s pirate ships run on a track hanging from the ceiling which dip and tilt and gently swing you through the Darling children’s nursery, over London, and then over and around Neverland! The flight over a tiny, realistic London still gets me excited even today. I guess this is why this attraction still fills the lines, it’s simply timeless!

So what’s your favorite Disney World rive vehicle? Did I leave any out?

D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives Event at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry

Walt Disney

D23 unveiled a special exhibit Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives to honor the 90th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. On October 16,1923, The Disney Brothers Studio was founded and the official contract was signed by Walter E. Disney and Roy O. Disney with M.J. Winkler to produce the series of animated shorts the “Alice Comedies”. To help celebrate this event D23 and the Disney Archives thought it best to honor Walt Disney by displaying the exhibit in the birthplace of Walt Disney himself, Chicago, IL. The Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) will be displaying the Disney Archives exhibit until May 4, 2014.

As you walk in you are greeted by a 6 minute video that details Walt Disney’s dream and desire to become the innovator he is so well known for today. As you begin the walk through of the exhibit you will go through the series of generations: Walt’s birth, childhood, business career, legacy, and continued growth of the Walt Disney Company. The exhibit has a great flow and guides you through with entertainment, hand drawn artwork, original merchandise, costumes, movie props, and more. As you walk through the exhibit you are walking through Walt’s footsteps as he made his way through life, exciting new technology, movies, and his rise to fame.

See below for photos!

I had the opportunity to speak with Becky Cline, Director of the Disney Archives, she said that the process of the creation of this exhibit took about a year to complete and took almost a month to completely install at MSI. When asked about her favorite pieces of the collection, She said that she holds a special place for the Snow Globe from Mary Poppins and the restored prop book from Sleeping Beauty. She also said that many Disney Treasures are still left to be found and restored. She is very excited to be able to showcase these items for the fans to enjoy and fall in love with.

Some of the amazing items that are featured include-

  • The original script for the short “Steamboat Willie” from 1928.
  • A partial recreated formal office of Walt Disney from The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. Includes original furnishings, original artwork, and personal items of Walt Disney.
  • Prop books from the Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White animated films.
  • A special area dedicated solely to the 50th Anniversary of the release of Mary Poppins. Includes an original painting on glass from the movie opening, original costumes, film clips, and movie props.
  • A recreation of an Animator’s art desk. Includes an original Movie poster from Bambie. The original animator’s models of Dumbo, Captain Hook, and Mickey Mouse. The original animator’s marionette of Pinocchio.
  • Special dedication to Mouseketeer Annette Funicello. Includes her original Mouseketeer costume and Mickey Ears.

At the end of the exhibit you have the chance to learn how to draw your very own Mickey Mouse. This area is very similar to the Animation experience in Disney World and Disneyland. Everyone had a great time and it brought a bit of the parks into the exhibit which was great!

If you have the chance to visit this exhibit, I would highly suggest it. This is a separate timed entry ticketed event at the museum and prices are $9 for adults and $7 for kids and seniors.

I was told by Museum staff that there will be speciality merchandise for the exhibit coming out very soon. Also special Disney holiday merchandise will be available closer to the holidays.

Here are my pictures from the event, I hope you like them.

Disney’s Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales Review

Gravity Falls

When I got the Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales DVD in the mail from Disney I honestly have never sat down and watched the show before. My daughter has watched it a few times but this past week we both jumped on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and started watching.

To my surprise the show is actually very good. There were many times I had a good hard laugh and so did my 7 year old. Some of the humor was for adults and others like when the Gnomes starting barfing rainbows were just for the kids.

Overall the show was very funny and the 6 episodes on the DVD was just enough for us to setup the DVR and schedule it to record on Disney XD. We also loved the little guidebook/map they give you in the DVD and my daughter laughed at the post cards inside, they were quite silly.

If you are new to the show, or a long time fan this 6 Episode DVD is something you should add to your collection. It is great for in the car (where it is now) when little ones want something to watch when you are driving around town.

I give it a good solid B.

Joffrey’s Coffee is Now Disney’s Official Specialty Brand Coffee

Taking into consideration I do not even drink coffee, the amount of information I have about Disney coffee is quite impressive but this is not a positive for Disney. Normally I hear about the coffee in Disney via  grumblings and comments that the only thing good about leaving Disney is a decent cup of coffee. Yes, there are a few places I hear to get good coffee…think Kona, but all in all the coffee at Disney is just not doing the job. But all that is changing, as Disney has just announced that they have entered into a long-term strategic alliance with Tampa based Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Co.

Joffrey’s is not only the official specialty coffee of Walt Disney World, but also Disneyland resort and all the Disney Vacation Club properties as well.

“We are thrilled to be creating unique coffee blends exclusively for Disney guests,” said Chris de Mezzo, Joffrey’s roastmaster and chief operating officer, in a prepared statement. “After all, a Disney vacation is like none other, so the coffee that Disney guests drink should be like none other, as well.”

Joffrey’s coffee is not completely new to Walt Disney World as it has been sold at kiosks around the Walt Disney World Resort, they will now have an expanded presence and available at select dining locations, as well as making special flavors only available on Disney property.

“We are committed to providing our guests with exceptional beverage options and expanding our relationship with Joffrey’s will complement our efforts,” said Maribeth Bisienere, vice president, Food & Beverage and Merchandise for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Joffrey’s focus on innovation and specialty blends aligns with our desire to enhance our guests’ experiences with memorable and unique offerings.”

So for all you coffee drinkers out there…does this help the Great Coffee Search at Disney?

Epcot

I had a chance last weekend to check out the Epcot Food & Wine Festival for the first time at Walt Disney World. I ended having to go both Saturday and Sunday as on Saturday it was so packed I wasn’t going to wait in line for 20 mins just for a little bite to eat.

So on Sunday I was eating right at 11am when the World Showcase first opened. This is a good trick if the lines are too long, just wait till the next morning to get your grub on.

Well enough talk here are the pictures from both days.

Visiting Walt Disney World with Boys-A Perfectly Pirate Disney Day

Pirates Limited Time Magic
Pirates Limited Time Magic

Pirates Limited Time Magic

Disney seems to cater a lot to princesses, doesn’t it?  But as a momma of boys, I am always looking for way to make my guys feel like their trip is just as magical!  When you’re a parent of boys, you see things from a whole different perspective, don’t you?  That’s why I want to share with you A Perfectly Pirate Day at Disney-Tips on Touring the Parks with Boys!

  • Dining:  Boys are always hungry!  And, Disney has some great dining locations for boys.  For table service dining, Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is a great opportunity.  Minnie Mouse is the only “girl” character there, so they won’t feel overwhelmed by the “girly factor” that some of the princess dining experiences can bring.  Tusker House at Animal Kingdom is always a winner with boys-Donald and his friends visit your tables in this rustic, African restaurant.  If you have a sports lover in your family, ESPN Zone at Disney’s Boardwalk is perfect for the guys.  At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, your little pirate might enjoy breakfast or lunch with Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates-as well as several Disney Junior Friends-at Hollywood and Vine.
  • Special Experiences:  With the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique being such a winner with the ladies, I know a lot of parents are looking for a special experience to enjoy with the boys.  The Pirates League at Magic Kingdom is a for sure “must do”.  Here, the boys get made over to look like a pirate, take a pirate oath, and even leave with a eye patch and bandana!  Another great experience for the adventurous boys is the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.  You make your way through the park, getting clues, and collecting cards.  I don’t know about you, but my boys always want to know how things work.  If that’s the case, the Keys to the Kingdom, Backstage Magic, or Behind the Seeds tours could be something your boys enjoy.  Last but not least, what is a “Perfectly Pirate” Disney day without a Pirates and Pals Fireworks cruise?

Look at all those awesome experiences your boys will love at Walt Disney World!  What experiences do your boys love?  I have a lot of experience traveling to Walt Disney World with my twin boys, and I’d love to create the Perfect Pirate Disney trip for YOUR family!  Contact me today at [email protected], or on Facebook for a FREE no-obligation quote to get you started on making magic for your family!

Valet Parking Coming to Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World

Dtd

Valet parking will begin next week at Downtown Disney. Parking at Disney World’s Downtown Disney can be quite the hassle during peak hours. Now with half of the spaces being under construction, that just adds to the nightmare.

The official start date is October 21. The valet service will run every day from 4:00pm to 2:00am. The cost will be 15 bucks.

You can drop off your car and pick it up in front of the West side of Cirque Du Soleil. You will be able to notify valet when you will be picking up your car by text message, in person, or by phone.

This is one of the many upgrades that Downtown Disney is getting as it transforms into Disney Springs. I am not the biggest fan of Downtown Disney, I always thought it was to small. I am excited to see the new expansion and upgrades.

If you are a Tables in Wonderland member you will receive complimentary use of the valet service with a restaurant receipt.

Disney Engineers

Students coached by Disney engineers took home the top honors, no shock there, from the 14th annual College Bowl during the HENAAC conference in New Orleans. One highlight from the annual conference held by Great Minds in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) was the team’s creation of a magic carpet model designed during a timed challenge.

Great Minds in STEM hosts the HENAAC College Bowl each year to encourage and recognize a new generation of STEM talent and help create a diverse workforce. The conference includes seminars, networking, internship and recruitment opportunities for attendees.

Hundreds of students participated in the competition that lived up to its motto: “Not for the Faint of Heart!” Industry and government representatives critique teams on their communication, teamwork and leadership skills. Each round of the competition focuses on topics related to career success, including resume writing, presentation skills and creativity.

The three Disney engineers who coached the winning team, Marissa Suarez, Jose Corpuz and Tony Ramiz, work at Walt Disney World Resort and for four years have volunteered to coach students during the two-day event.

Students compete in a lightning round of interviews with coaches for a spot on the team. The Disney team competed against students coached by professionals from IBM, NASA, Boeing and other organizations.

The Walt Disney Parks and Resorts team included students from Florida A&M University, University of New Mexico, University of Texas, California State University, Texas A&M University, University of New Orleans, El Camino College and Rochester Institute of Technology.
