Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary Red Carpet Event

The 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney Studios’ MARY POPPINS was honored with a Red Carpet Event held at the TCL Chinese Theatre, in Hollywood, California, Saturday, November 9, 2013.

The early afternoon event began with the arrival of stars, young and old.  I had the opportunity to interview several of the attendees.  Among them was the very animated and excited Adam Irigoyen (Disney’s “Shake it Up”) who shared his excitement at the opportunity to see MARY POPPINS on the big screen.   Rowan Blanchard talked about her upcoming “Girl Meets World“, scheduled to air on the Disney Channel in 2014.   She said there is a probability that most if not all of the cast of “Boy Meets World” will appear in her show.

The young actors also included Albert Tsai (“Trophy Wife”), Austin North and Piper Curda (Disney’s “I didn’t do it”),  Landry Bender (Disney’s “Crash and Bernstein”), Dyland Riley Snyder (“Disney XD’s “Kickin It”),  Jacob Bertrand (Rise of the Guardians), Paris Berele and Jake Short (“Mighty Med”) most of who had never seen MARY POPPINS.

Also attending the screening and just as excited were Victoria Summer (Saving Mr. Banks), Breann Johnson (Red Wing, the Appearing), Charles Fleischer (Roger Rabbit), Kathryn Beaumont (voice of Peter Pan’s Wendy and Alice in Alice in Wonderland).  I asked Ms. Beaumont if she had a favorite (Wendy vs Alice) and with a knowing smile said, both were special.  Sondra Currie (The Hangover Trilogy) and Hal Sparks (Disney XDs “Lab Rats”) who praised the talents of Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews, stating how the actors used to be able to sing, dance, act and even play multiple roles in movies.

Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks in MARY POPPINS) and Dick Van Dyke (Bert and the Senior Banker, Mr. Dawes) graced the Red Carpet.  Mr. Van Dyke sang a few bars of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and mentioned that although he could still remember the steps he would not be dancing.

One of the highlights of my Red Carpet experience was meeting and talking to FLOYD NORMAN.  Mr. Norman was the first African American animator at the Walt Disney Studios.  Mr. Norman was part of the animation team for The Jungle book, Sleeping Beauty, The Sword and the Stone among many others.  At Pixar Animation, he worked on Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc.   Floyd Norman stated that Walt Disney did not care about the color of people’s skin, just their talent.  He also talked about the fact that he did not think about barriers, he “applied for a job and was hired”.  When asked his thoughts about SAVING MR. BANKS, he smiled and said he “was there when that whole story happened”.

Talking to Richard Sherman was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He talked about how MARY POPPINS was very near and dear to him.  “We wanted them (audience) to love it (movie)”.  He shared how exciting it was to be back.  He continued saying how he never would have thought, at the premiere years ago, attending as a young man, nervous and wanting the audience to love the movie, that he would once again be back at the same theater to celebrate the 50TH anniversary.

The Red Carpet event was followed by the screening of the digitally restored MARY POPPINS, of the one of Walt Disney’s greatest film achievements.

MARY POPPINS will be available in Blu-ray Combo Pack & HD Digital  – December 10, 2013 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the movie release.

Bonus features will include popular music from the film including “Spoon Full of Sugar, ” Step in Time”, Supercalifragilisiticexpialidocious,” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and clips from  meetings between Richard Sherman, and Jason Schwartzman (who portrays Mr. Sherman in SAVING MR. BANKS).  The Sherman brothers, Robert and Richard wrote all the classic songs from MARY POPPINS.

The Disneyland Resorts kicks off the Holiday Season, today with traditional and new park decorations and shows and surprises throughout the resort.   The holiday magic of the parks is an incredible experience to be enjoyed by young and old.

Disneyland brings back their Christmas Parade “A Christmas Fantasy” complete with our favorite characters and a visit from Santa Claus.  “Believe…in Holiday Magic” fireworks,  The Haunted Mansion with a mix of Halloween and Christmas decor and “It’s a Small World” with its 50,000 glittering lights return to the delight of park visitors.  The beautiful and famous Disneyland tree is decorated and located on Main Street.  The return of Downtown Disney’s Ice Rink will be made over to include FROZEN’s Olaf as this year’s theme.

New to Disneyland this year is the addition of holiday cheer to an old favorite.  The Jungle Cruise has been renamed the Jingle Cruise and skippers have added holiday commentary to the expedition. The snake entwined within the decorations at the entrance to the Jingle Cruise brought surprised looks and laughter to many entering the ride.   Don’t miss the beautiful FROZEN sisters, Elsa and Anna at Fantasyland.

Other favorites include a visit to “Jingle Jangle Jamboree” at Big Thunder Ranch to give Santa my list and finding the perfect place to take your picture of the beautiful Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.  The sparkling lights, snowdrifts and icicles add the perfect touch of holiday spirit.

Disney’s California Adventures underwent their holiday makeover with decorations throughout the park beginning with the 50ft tree with vintage ornaments located on Buena Vista street.   Bug’s Land, Mad T Party in Hollywood Land and Car’s Land are lit up with their own unique decor.   Visitors can dance and sing with the “Phineas and Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party – Holiday Edition”  Enjoy delicious food, music and decorations with a Latin flair at this year’s all new “Viva Navidad” located in Paradise Gardens.

The all new California Adventure’s World of Color – Winter Dreams show will have you smiling and speechless with its beauty and holiday message.  The new show which took 3 months to program, includes 17,375,232 pixels making the viewing an incredible experience.  The show not only added 16 moving lights to Mickey’s Fun Wheel but also included 650 new lights to California’s Screamin both can be seen in the background of the show.

The amazing and incredible holiday sights and sounds can be enjoyed at Disneyland Resorts beginning Friday, November 15, 2013 through January 6, 2014.

Drink Around the World Showcase – France Pavilion

france

There’s no doubt that the France pavilion will have you dreaming of Paris. It’s the perfect spot for a Drinking Around the World Showcase excursion and provides just an extra bit of joie de vivre to any experience! Between the food and drink, you’ll be easily able to rack up DAWS points—just make sure you pace yourself so you’re only more than a little nuts.

Begin your stroll through the pavilion by visiting Les Vins des Chef de France. This kiosk offers a variety of wines by the glass ranging from $5.87 – $9.86. There are a few types of Champagne available as well, including the Kir Royale with champagne & Creme de Cassis ($12.91). Beer drinkers can imbibe in the French beer Kronenbourg 1644 ($6.57). But the real highlights of this kiosk are the slushes. The Grand Marnier and Grey Goose Orange Slush ($9.34) is perhaps one of the most iconic World Showcase drinks. It not only tastes delicious (many find it to taste like a creamsicle) but it also packs an alcoholic punch! Be careful not to guzzle these down too quickly. Many a DAWS goer has been taken out by the unassuming Grand Marnier and Grey Goose Orange Slush. The Grey Goose Citron Lemonade Slush ($9.34) also carries a cult following by DAWS goers. Looking for other cool refreshing drinks? The Nuvo, Sparkling Vodka ($14.88) is perhaps the most expensive drink at the pavilion but is sure to quench your thirst on a hot Florida day.

France Grand Marnier Slush

For a full French experience try one of the table service locations, Chef de France and Monsieur Paul. Both include prix fixe menus, though Chef de France offers much more affordable French fare. Many couples find this a romantic location, and it is terrific for celebrations. It offers an extensive wine list which pairs nicely with the menu offerings. For an exclusive meal, Monsieur Paul is the place to visit in the World Showcase. This is a very high end menu; expect to pay top dollar for both food & beverage. You may need to drink before your meal in order to forget the steep prices!

DAWS goers will be very happy visiting L’Artisan des Glaces for ice cream and sorbet. You can even score food & beverage points in one when you order an ice cream martini ($11.50): 2 scoops of ice cream or sorbet, served in a martini glass with a shot of Grand Marnier, Whipped Cream Vodka or Rum. Or try out the Croque Glace ($6.10) a warm brioche ice cream sandwich. Choice of 1 ice cream/sorbet flavor in a brioche, with chocolate or raspberry sauce, warmed and sealed. It has quickly become a top favorite.

List of Prices

Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie is a DAWS excursion winner for snacks and quick service meals. The Croque Monsieur ($8.75) aka grilled ham & cheese sandwich will please most palates and Quiche Lorraine ($5.20) is yet another French classic. You can easily score many of the same wines and beer as the Les Vins des Chef de France kiosk.

Another great stop for a snack on your DAWS excursion is Crepes des Chefs de France. The only alcoholic beverage they serve is the Kronenbourg 1664 beer. However, it’s well worth the visit for the crepes alone. You’ll be saying c’est magnifique to the chocolate crepe and strawberry preserve crepe ($3.99) – both conveniently available as a snack credit through the Disney Dining Plan.

Overall, the France Pavilion offers traditional French cuisine and beverages that are sure to please DAWS goers. Though a little pricier than some of the other pavilions, it’s a sure winner both for taste and for DAWS points. Tres bien, indeed!

Disney Quick Tip – Take An Afternoon Break from the Disney Parks

P3210029
P3210029

take a break

What may be the one piece of advice to keep you from pulling your hair out on your perfect Disney vacation?  Take an afternoon break!

Going to Disney can be a phenomenal, overwhelming, costly, and exciting experience.  Often families want to make sure that they see and do as many attractions and shows as possible to get the best value for their money.  People even stay in the parks from open to close.  As tempting as it is to do the parks commando style, consider taking an afternoon break.  The Disney heat can be an even greater incentive for your family to head back to your resort and relax.

Taking an afternoon break can allow your family to re-group and re-charge, helping to calm any frayed nerves.   You can easily arrange your family’s daily trip plans to include some needed afternoon downtime for the family.  If you are staying at a Disney resort, remember to take advantage of morning or evening Extra Magic Hours to increase your park time and decrease waiting time due to lower crowd levels.

When my family takes an afternoon break, we often go back to our resort to take a nap, go for a swim, or check out resort activities.  It was hard for us at first to not do commando trips because we wanted to immerse our family in as much Disney as possible.  During those trips, we had to be prepared for possible child meltdowns because they were just too overstimulated.  The afternoon breaks really made a difference in the quality and feeling of our family’s Disney vacations.

Does your family take afternoon breaks or do you go commando style to the parks?  What does your family do during its afternoon breaks to relax?  We would love to hear your thoughts!

Disney and Netflix Make a Deal for New Marvel Programs

marvel studios logo

marvel

Walt Disney Co.  and Netflix  unveiled a deal for multiple original live-action series based on four of Marvel’s most popular characters to be shown exclusively on Netflix’s streaming-video service.

Under the agreement, Marvel will develop four serialized programs–“Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage”–leading to a miniseries programming event for Netflix. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, 13-episode series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series.

Netflix has sought deals for more exclusive content in the face of competition from Amazon.com Inc. and other outlets and is also focusing on developing original content.

Last year, Netflix outbid Liberty Media Corp.’s Starz for the exclusive right to show Disney movies, including films from Marvel Studios, about eight months after they hit theaters.

Starting in 2016, Netflix customers will be able to see recently released Disney movies in their Watch Instantly queue.

Hollywood Studios Testing Restrictions on Fastpass+

P1110640
P1110640

fp+

After the news last week about Epcot, Disney has branched off to do more testing that will restrict Fastpass+ usage this time in Hollywood Studios.  This test matches up with what Disney originally announced for FastPass+.  They are testing during a time where the Disney resorts are at some of the highest prices per night. This change will definitely make your day at Hollywood Studios a little less magical.

Those guests using Fastpass+ will be allowed to book only 1 headliner attraction and 2 other attractions per day.

Group 1: Headliners are:

Group 2:

As you can see from the groups, this means it will not be possible to hold a FastPass+ for both Toy Story Mania and Rock n Roller Coaster. The only option will be to use the standby line for one of these attractions. Those of you who already have FastPass+ setup will not be required to move into this test grouping unless you modify all of your existing selections.

Keeping Your Cell Charged in the Disney Parks

iphonepicturesmarch2013 july2013 469
iphonepicturesmarch2013 july2013 469

charged

All it takes is a dip below the 50% marker on my battery life indicator and I am hunting for a spot to charge my phone.  In an age of EVERYTHING being at the tip of your fingers, it is important to have a fully charged phone while you’re in the parks–from keeping track with your family to utilizing the best Disney World apps out there, it can be hard when you are living it up in the parks.  Between posting pictures on Instagram and updating my status as I go, I know how quickly your phone can go when you are using it frequently.  Today I’m sharing some tips with you that will help you to get a life and keep your cell charged in the parks!

Check your settings!

A few quick and easy setting changes on your phone can help keep your battery from draining dry.  Here 5 quick and easy quick ideas (keep in mind I have an iPhone 5 so I’m going off of my settings, but I’m sure other phones are comparable).  Check your phone manual (or Google) for more battery saving suggestions):

  • turn off wi-fi
  • turn off location services
  • turn off 3G/4G
  • turn on auto brightness
  • turn off Bluetooth services

Find a Spot to plug in!

Okay so, I would like to publicly say that I was the first person to think up a charging spot in the parks.  I’d like to take all the credit for the Tangled Restroom Area phone charging stations.  That was me…(okay, so probably not me and instead some really well paid imagineer).  But for the record, I did say (about 4 years ago–thank you very much) that there should be a quick charge spot in the Future World Area of EPCOT where you could put your phone on a tray or something and charge it to 100% in like 60 seconds.  IF that becomes a reality, I want a portion of the profits or at the very least a room in Cinderella Castle.

If you are still with me…anyone…Bueller…

And, if you are all like “what?  Tangled phone charging stations who?”  Then my friends, let me let you in on a not so secret, secret.  There is a free to use phone charging area at the Tangled Restroom area in the Magic Kingdom.  You’ll find fake log posts fully equipped with USB and AC electric plug outlets.  Make sure to do is bring your phone’s wall charging cord with you and boom, you’ve got a festive spot to sit and charge for a while.  Take a break or plug up for a 5 minute refresher charge while your friends and family hit the restrooms.  Here’s a shot of the area and the faux logs

Ashley phone fall 2013 680

Ashley phone fall 2013 682

Ashley phone fall 2013 681

I’ll admit to you and ONLY you a teensy confession.  In the past, I have charged my phone in non-designated areas.  I’m ashamed… But in my defense, I needed my phone!

I’ve charged in Bruce’s Shark World…I’ve charged (outside of) the Country Bear Jamboree

iphonepicturesmarch2013-july2013 469

Basically, I’ve charged lots of places, HOWEVER…

Now that there’s a designated area, I use that.  Remember these things should you need a quick charge….

1. Safety first:  This means I don’t put myself or others in harm (i.e., don’t charge in the middle of a busy area, don’t unplug anything, don’t move anything to get to the charger)

2. Be considerate:  I find a place with a plug that is out of the way of other and allows me to sit with my phone.  This might mean finding a table next to an outlet or finding a spot near a bench with a plug.

3. Open plugs only: If there’s a safety cover on the plug I pass it by.  There are plenty of “regular” plugs just waiting to be used.

4. When in doubt, ask a cast member: I asked in Innoventions and the cast member directed me to a plug right next to a bench!  Perfect!

*disclaimer: when in doubt, ask or wait to charge.  I’m not encouraging bad manners!

Buy an External Battery or Charger Pack

When in doubt, purchasing an external battery might be a good idea.  They make external batteries and charging packs in loads of varieties.  There are battery packs that you charge independently and the plug your phone up to via USB, charger packs opperated by AA batteries, and even solar power packs.  If you forget to buy one, leave yours at home, or realize that the stop and go of charging your phone is too much, you can pick up a AA battery powered pack (that includes the starter batteries) for under $20 throughout the parks.  The only downside to these (speaking from experience) is the AA batteries have to be replaced often which really starts to add up.

So, what did you think?  I hope these tips will keep your cell charged in the parks.  That way you’ll be able to check in on your favorite Facebook page–Chip and Co. , hashtag your pics into an oblivion on Instagram, tweet your thoughts on the crowds, stake your claim on the parks on Foursquare, and catch up on all those work emails…on second thoughts….

Time for sharing!  In 140 characters or less (jk), what are your best battery saving tips?  Share them below!

As always, thanks for reading and commenting!

See ya real soon,

Ashley
