all night

Disney has just announced on their blog the All-Night Extravaganza on Memorial Day 2014 Weekend. Their “Rock Your Disney Side Party” will be a fun-filled 24-hour event at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto and 135 of their friends gathered at Magic Kingdom Park and formed the familiar shape of a hashtag. The 140 characters then invited you and your family to “Rock Your Disney Side” during a 24-hour party to kick off summer.

At this year’s All-Night Extravaganza, everyone is being invited to show their “Disney Side” by dressing as a favorite Disney hero or villain. The Magic Kingdom Park in Florida and Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park in California will be filled with Disney heroes and villains from 6 a.m., May 23 to 6 a.m., May 24, 2014, local time.

The celebration on both coasts will feature a cavalcade of events showcasing the good-vs.-evil of classic Disney stories including character meet-and-greets throughout the parks, special entertainment, event merchandise and special food and beverage offerings.

Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog and rockyourdisneyside.com for more details and information as we get closer to the All-Night Extravaganza on May 23 for more details.

24 hour

We are one step closer to Anonymouse’s prediction of another 24 hour event at Disney World & Disneyland. If you head to www.rockyourdisneyside.com, Disney’s newly purchased domain you will see the url magically forwards to http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/24-hour-event/

So does that mean we will see a Show Your Disney Side 24 Hour event this Memorial Day? Only time will tell… This is a good step in the right direction.

I really hope Disney does a Villains Event to celebrate Maleficent. With their overwhelming success at Hollywood Studios last year it would make good sense.

If Disney does do another 24 Hour Event will you be attending? Let us know in the comment box below.

Add Some Extra Magic to your next Disneyland Resort Vacation

Whether you have been to Disneyland before or you are planning your first visit, it’s always fun to add something special and extra memorable. Disneyland may not be as big as its younger sibling, Walt Disney World, but there is still plenty of opportunity to create a little magic for your next vacation.

Cabanas:

If you’re staying on the resort and planning on spending a day at the pool, make a cabana reservation. All three hotels on site have wonderful pool areas, but the cabanas at the Grand Californian and the Disneyland Hotel are pure luxury. A relaxing day at the pool is made even better when you don’t have to worry about scouting out/guarding a pool chair with an umbrella all day.

Our family always chooses The Disneyland Hotel pool because of its fantastic new renovations. I would even suggest you request a cabana by the water slides. We like that there’s a shallow water area around the slides where younger kids can wade in if they’re not big enough to swim in the larger pools.

All cabanas include a covered area with couches, flat screen TV, two loungers, beach sized towels, and a refrigerator stocked with six bottles of water and a bowl of fruit. You also have wait staff that will bring your food and beverage orders.

Chef’s Counter at Napa Rose:

Napa Rose is already one of the most renowned restaurants in all of southern California. Your experience is made even better at the helm of Chef Andrew Sutton while you sit around a counter that faces the Napa Rose kitchen. Chef Sutton (or one of his awesome, hand-picked sous chefs if it’s his night off) comes around to ask about your likes, dislikes, and allergies. He then takes those notes and prepares a culinary masterpiece for the entire group. Although kids are always welcome at the counter, I would suggest that only the most patient little patrons do this because your dinner experience can take upwards of two to three hours. Perhaps take advantage of Pinocchio’s Workshop at the Grand California or in-room babysitting if you don’t think your kids will enjoy this as much as you would.

Fantasmic Priority Seating:

If you are a veteran visitor of Disneyland, you know in order to get a decent view of Fantasmic, you need to camp out in front of Rivers of America hours before the show starts. With Fantasmic priority seating, you get an actual reserved seat with a dessert tray and your choice of beverage. You are even allowed to remain in your seats after the show to watch the fireworks. A word of advice on this option: When you line up to get your seat assignment, get there a little early and request seats as far away from the reservation podium as possible. The closer you are to the podium, the greater the chance you will have getting stuck behind one of the large light poles. The best seats are the furthest away on the stairs.

Disneyland Tour:

There are several tours offered by the park, but there is one I offer above all the rest: “Walk in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps.” Disneyland was truly Walt’s park, and there is something more magical about this park because of it. The tour even includes a view inside his personal apartment above the fire station in Town Square.

If any of these options sound good to you, your travel agent can assist with any further questions or schedule your reservations.

Disney Quick Tips – Try Character Dining

Meeting the Disney Characters is one of the highlights of visiting a Disney park. Unfortunately, the lines to meet these characters can get quite long. Luckily, there is a way to hang out with your favorite characters without the long lines – character dining.

Each of the four Walt Disney World theme parks, as well as many of the Disney resorts, offer character dining options. You can dine with Mickey and friends in the Contemporary, Pooh and friends in the Magic Kingdom, or even dine with the princesses inside Cinderella Castle! The characters will each visit your table while you’re dining. In my experience, you tend to get more time to interact with the characters at these meals. Some of the character meals even include fun activities for children, such as a parade with the characters.

What is your favorite character dining experience at Disney? Let us know in the comments below!

Have you ever wondered how Big Thunder Mountain Railroad creates thrills as the wildest ride in the wilderness?

Cast Members (Voluntears) from the Disney World Resort who work these types of  attractions, combined fun with a variety of interactive displays showcasing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to inspire future scientists during the annual Otronicon event at the Orlando Science Center. The 4 day event attracts thousands of kids annually from schools across the region, inspiring them to consider STEM careers.

“To a kid, Otronicon is a dream come true — four floors of video games, robots, virtual reality and more,” said JoAnn Newman, president and CEO of Orlando Science Center. “With participation from Disney VoluntEARS and representatives of other companies across Central Florida, this event creates engaging opportunities that spark a child’s interest in science and tech careers through the appeal of interactive technology.”

Disney VoluntEARS have been involved with Otronicon for the past 3 years to encourage students to consider STEM careers and highlight the fun connected with those roles. Walt Disney World Resort also demonstrates support for the Orlando Science Center in other ways, including grants, in-kind donations and volunteer leadership.

Ihu Falls

Ihu’s Breakaway Falls will be open to Aquatica guests on May 9th! This new ride, which is the tallest, and steepest multi drop tower is going to be a huge hit here in Orlando! At nearly 80 feet tall, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is where thrill seekers face their fears and each other. After stepping into one of three clear “breakaway boxes,” they’ll watch each other fall one-by-one as the floor underneath them disappears. They’ll never know who’s going to breakaway first – and the anticipation of who drops next is part of the wild ride!

Fun Facts about the new ride include:

  • Ihu’s Breakaway Falls features the tallest, steepest, longest and only multi-drop tower slides of their kind in the southern United States.

  • At nearly 80 feet tall, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls has the tallest and steepest 360-degree spirals in the southern United States.

  • Those who dare to brave Ihu’s Breakaway Falls will experience an almost vertical drop for nearly 40 feet, the steepest in the southern United States.

  • Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is the longest water thrill slide of its kind featuring three “breakaway boxes” and four completely different slide paths. Once the floor disappears, riders will drop 20-24 feet per second.

  • Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is the only high-speed water thrill slide in the world that propels guests through four, 360-degree spirals.

Check back for a full review of the ride once it is open!

Top 10 Ways to Pass the Time While Waiting in Line at Disney World

line
line

smallworldline

Even with Fastpass+, you will probably end up waiting in a line at some point during your vacation.  Waiting in lines at Disney World with kids can stretch parents’ patience a little thin.  The best way to deal with waiting for your favorite attractions is to go to Disney prepared to wait.  The following top 10 ways to pass the time while waiting in line at Disney World are to help bust the waiting blues.

  1. Play on an electronic device – Smart phone, iPhone, iPad, etc. you name it.  Downloading your child’s favorite game(s) prior to going to the parks can help you be prepared prior to getting into any long lines.  There are charging stations at various locations around the parks, just remember to bring charging cords with you as well!
  2. Grab extra park maps or when you enter the park.  You can give park maps and a pen to your kids and ask them to circle the rides that they want to go on that day.  You can also ask them to rank them in order of importance to ride that day.
  3. For older kids, bring blank paper and a pen or pencil.  You can play different games while waiting in line like Hangman or Tic-Tac-Toe. For younger kids, bring a coloring book and washable crayons so they can color and doodle while waiting.
  4. Try a rhyming word game, guess that Disney attraction or character, or play I Spy.  Looking for Hidden Mickeys can also be great fun!
  5. Bring a deck of cards.  This option works best when there are at least 3 people and with older kids, so that way one person can hold the deck and the discard pile.
  6. Make new friends.  Strike up a conversation with the people in line by you.  Kids can re resourceful with a new friend to play with while waiting.
  7. Pin trade with people around you in line.  There’s no telling what new treasure you may score.
  8. Bring a favorite book or two to read or bring a puzzle book.
  9. For younger kids, bring a bottle of bubbles.  Blow gently so they don’t go so far away that you are chasing after your child.
  10. Play some hand games like rock/ paper/scissors, thumb wars, or clapping games like cross down.

The above top 10 ways to pass the time while waiting in line at Disney World is by no means an exhaustive list.  While waiting in line, what other things have you and your family done to keep busy?  What boredom busters helped your family?  Comment below – we would love to hear your ideas!
