I-Drive’s new $200 million entertainment complex featuring the Orlando Eye is the latest addition to the world’s most popular family destination. Located in the heart of popular International Drive the Orlando Eye’s 400 foot iconic observation wheel is the centerpiece of the complex featuring restaurants, clubs, shops and attractions.

Joining the Orlando Eye is a spectacular SEA LIFE Aquarium and Madame Tussauds wax attraction. All three attractions will be operated by Merlin Entertainments. Popular restaurants include Yard House, Buffalo Wild Wings, Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Sugar Factory and Seafood Republic. High energy entertainment will be on tap at Tin Roof and Cowgirls. Complementing the Orlando Eye as a unique feature of the complex is a $1.5 million dollar water show set to music and color-changing lights.

Free parking will be available in a 1600 space multi-level parking garage. Restaurants will open beginning in spring of 2014 with the main opening of the complex scheduled for spring of 2015.

Top 10 Free Things to do at Walt Disney World!

P1130315
P1130315

celebrate

Lets face it, a Walt Disney World vacation can be expensive, but did you know there are a ton of free things you can do while you are there? From things to do in the parks to fun things to do after you have wore yourself out walking around the parks I have put together this fun list for you.

Here are my Top 10 favorite free things to do at Walt Disney World.

10. Pinocchio’s Village Haus: Head over to the Magic Kingdom and you can sign the Blue Fairy’s book and make a wish. You never know, it may just come true!

9. Harmony Barber Shop: Free Pixie dust! If your little princess wants more than just the glittery pixie dust you can get at the castle, go to the barber shop! It is next to the fire station on Main Street USA hidden around the corner near the Emporium. The cast member will spray your princesses hair with hairspray and sprinkle lots of colorful confetti glitter all over their head! She will love it and you will love the smiles she has from ear to ear! This is definitely a must do for a Princess of any age!

8. Take a boat ride: Disney has a vast array of water craft to transport guests from place to place. These watercraft offer fun, free, and scenic ways to get around the massive 40 square miles of Walt Disney World. The most iconic of these is the ferry boat from the Transportation and Ticket Center to the Magic Kingdom. You can take a boat from the Magic Kingdom to the Wilderness Lodge to check out the amazing architecture, and if you are lucky you just might get to see Firerock Geyser going off. My personal favorite is to take a trip down the Sassagoula River from Downtown Disney to Port Orleans French Quarter. Once there,  stop in to see the brightly themed Sassagoula Floatworks for some beignets and coffee!

campfire

7. Resort Campfire: If you are staying at a resort on property they have a campfire most nights with free marshmallows and sticks to roast them! Bring along some chocolate and graham crackers for some yummy s’mores. After you have had your fill of marshmallows you can enjoy a Disney movie on a large outdoor screen. My favorite is at the Polynesian, you cannot beat watching a movie on the beach, and not to worry, they will pause the movie during Wishes so you enjoy the fireworks!

6. Riding the Monorail: Disney’s trademark mode of transportation, and it’s completely free! You can resort hop to the three monorail resorts, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Contemporary Resort. Take a quick trip to Epcot for an elevated tour of Future World, and a quick look at the World Showcase. Finally the express monorail that serves Magic Kingdom will provide a quick trip around the Seven Seas Lagoon.

cc

5. Club Cool: Just past the Starbucks in Epcot is a little gem called club cool. If you’re thirsty and need a sip of something sweet this is your place. You get free samples of soft drinks from around the world! My favorite happens to be Vegitabeta from Japan. Yummy! Try Beverly at your own risk.

4. Drop by Ghirardelli: Do you love chocolate? I know I do! At Ghirardelli in Downtown Disney as you walk in the door a friendly employee will hand you a square of chocolate for free! Pretty sweet deal! The flavors change seasonally, my favorite is the caramel!

3. Celebration Buttons: At any Guest Relations building you can get free celebration buttons! An anniversary, a birthday, your first visit, a family reunion, or any reason at all you happen to be celebrating. They write your name on it and Disneyfi it a little too! A great souvenir, and you can’t beat the price!

2. Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom: Take your admission ticket, or Magic band to one of the two SOTMK locations to get a free pack of trading cards. These are part of a fun interactive game with portals all over the Magic Kingdom, except Tomorowland. The first location to get your cards is in the fire station on Main Street USA, the other is in Liberty Square behind the Christmas shop. You can get one pack of cards for each day you are at the Magic Kingdom.  They do require that you play at least one portal to get more cards each day, but is it great fun so that should not be a problem!

1. Campfire Sing-a-Long with Chip and Dale: Get some one on one time with everyone’s favorite chipmunks, and sing-a-long to some campfire favorites at the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. S’mores kits are available for purchase for about $10, or you can bring your own supplies along with you. You can also bring hot dogs and cook them over one of the two fire pits for an inexpensive dinner. After all the singing and dancing is done, stick around for a Disney movie! If visiting during the colder months be sure to bring warm clothes or a blanket because once the sun goes down it can get chilly fast!

So this is my Top 10 Free Things to do at Walt Disney World. Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comment box below!

Epcot Expands “Re-Discovering America: Family Treasures from the Kinsey Collection” Gallery this Spring

Walt Disney World Resort guests visiting The American Adventure pavilion at Epcot will see exciting new updates as part of an expansion of “Re-Discovering America: Family Treasures from the Kinsey Collection” this spring. Additional images, artwork and artifacts related to watershed moments in American history will soon be on display.

Walt Disney Imagineers, along with philanthropists Bernard, Shirley and Khalil Kinsey, have begun to add several new artifacts and display cases to the popular cultural exhibit and will continue to do so in coming months.

The new artwork and documents will be added and current pieces will be re-located to new pedestal displays during the next two months. Themed to hope, belief, courage, imagination and heritage, the exhibit provides empowering stories of American history from voices that are not commonly seen or heard. Art and artifacts pay homage to African Americans who helped build and transform a nation. Their stories of determination and courage, from the nation’s early days to the present, are at the heart of the exhibit.

New objects joining the exhibit this spring include:

  • Distribution of Population in New York, 1801
  • Noon Wash by artist Jonathan Green
  • Slave Songs of the United States
  • Tintype Photographs
  • Carte de Visite

“Re-Discovering America: Family Treasures from the Kinsey Collection” is included in Epcot admission.

Disney Dining at Kimonos in Disney’s Swan Resort

P1150502
P1150502

P1150511

While at Walt Disney World last week I had an opportunity to drop by Kimonos at Disney’s Swan Resort. I have heard many great things from various Disney Fans who love sushi and thought it would be a great time to check it out. I am sure glad I did…

P1150465

While not a huge restaurant it does have the Japanese Sushi Bar feel to it. With a full bar, sushi chefs preparing their fresh fish, kimonos adoring the walls, and karaoke up front, the design of the room has a very laid back atmosphere.

sushi

The sushi chefs were hard at work but we’re nice enough to look up and give me a nice bow while preparing all that wonderful fish. I am a huge fan of sushi and eat it almost every other week at home. There are quite a few places to get sushi at Walt Disney World will this place make my Top 5 list? Wait and see…

P1150479

Jason and his family was nice enough to share dinner with me and we started with a bunch of appetizers. Fried veggies, shrimp, edamame, and Kobe beef. All were delicious but one stood out among the rest, the Kobe Beef. I can honestly say I have never had better beef in my life. They literally melted in your mouth. The sauce added a nice kick but I could have eaten a whole plate of that beef.

P1150467

Like almost all places at Walt Disney World there is no such thing as sweet tea (living in NC has spoiled me). The server Leah was nice enough to bring me this which was delicious. It was so fresh and flavorful I drank a glass without putting sugar in it.

P1150478

If you want something with a little more kick I suggest the Seasonal Sake Sangria, very tasty and original which I am a big fan of.

P1150486

Most places at Disney World have many of the same drinks and it was nice to see something different. The General Manager Lindsay is a Mixologist and teaches some of the classes during the Swan & Dolphin Food & Wine Classic (which I hope we can an invite for this year) we enjoyed talking with her about some cool things happening this year, and I could tell really knew her stuff, considering she basically grew up at the Swan & Dolphin.

P1150495

While we were waiting for the main coarse (sushi) people were having lots of fun singing karaoke. You had a good mixture of people and there were lots of laughing going on. I even heard a kid around 7-8 singing Johnny Cash which is one of my favorite artists. Loved it!

P1150502

This is what I have been waiting for! I picked a Kimono Roll, Coconut Shrimp Roll, and my standby Dragon Roll. Jason and his family are not sushi people but did try some of the rolls I chose. The sushi was so fresh and melted in my mouth. The Kimono Roll was my favorite and had a good amount of heat which I love. The presentation was flawless and yes I did eat the meat out of that prawn, sorry Pepe.

Now onto dessert.

creme

I am not a dessert fan myself not to mention I was stuffed from all that delicious sushi so Jason and his family ordered dessert. I did taste a bit of the creme brulee which was ok. Remember I am not a dessert person so many of these dishes are wasted on me.

cake

I didn’t have any of this but the girls said the Triple Chocolate Cake was to die for. Looking over the dessert menu I was hoping for some original items like the rest of the meal. That would be my only complaint of the meal is they could have used some traditional Japanese dessert options.

Ok now down to the verdict. Like I stated above I eat sushi at Walt Disney World all the time and the same goes for me at home. So where does Kimonos fall on my Top 10 Sushi Spots at Walt Disney World? Drum Roll please….

I would put Kimonos down as #2, just behind Kona Cafe. What makes Kimonos so appealing? That would be the price. Their prices are much cheaper than most of the Walt Disney World Restaurants, which to me makes me feel that Kimonos has good food and is a value, which while you are on vacation is a BIG plus in my book. Did I mention they also do Tables in Wonderland which is another Big Plus, can you say free Valet Parking?

Will I be dining at Kimonos again, you better believe it. My oldest daughter takes after me so I can see on our next Walt Disney World Vacation the 2 of us stopping by for some good fun and some great sushi. Jason, his family and I had a great time even though it was late, we had some great food, and no I did not get daring enough to sing some karaoke, maybe next trip…

Special thank you to Lindsay aka @cocktailgal1 and Leah our sever for a great meal!

I want to hear what you think. Have you ever dined at Kimonos? What did you think? Let me know in the comment box below.

Hey there guys and gals Anonymouse here. I have some interesting Disney Gossip for those Marathon runners out there.

I have heard these are not the droids you are looking for… Just kidding what I heard was Disney is going to be bringing a new Marathon to Walt Disney World in May 2015 to coincide with Star Wars Weekend. They will be hosting a Star Wars themed 10k & Half Marathon for all you Star Wars Nerds. Not sure if a 5k is attached to this event so far all I have heard are the 2.

Chip was telling me there were many people dressed up in Star Wars outfits and what better time to run a marathon but Star Wars Weekends? Would you go?

runDisney is saying they have big news coming out tomorrow and I think this is it. As soon as I get more details I will post it, till then I am going to brush up on my Wookie.

Update 05/27/14 – The dates for the Star Wars Marathon will be Jan. 15-18 according to the Run Disney Twitter Feed. Stay tuned for full details.

Anywho, that is all the Disney gossip I have right now. For my past gossip articles be sure to check them out here. Got any good gossip/rumors please email me at [email protected] or on my facebook page.

Kim Smith Shatters Disney Princess Half Marathon Course Record

rundisney

After the Disney Princess Half Marathon course record was clipped the past two years, three-time Olympian Kim Smith essentially shredded it Sunday, winning the event in a blistering 1:11:49.

Smith, a 32-year-old New Zealand native who lives in Rhode Island, lowered the event record by nearly six minutes, easily erasing Rachel Booth’s previous mark of 1:17:38 from last year.

Smith’s record-setting performance wasn’t unexpected. She ran a 1:07:36 in 2011, which still stands as the fastest half marathon run by a woman in the U.S.

The Disney Princess Half Marathon presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals was basically a warm up run for Smith, who used the 13.1-mile trek through Epcot and Magic Kingdom – her first runDisney race – as a training run in preparation for the London Marathon in April.

“Running through the Magic Kingdom was probably the best part of the race. The crowds there were great and everyone is cheering you on,” Smith said. “It’s just a fun event and pretty low-key for an elite athlete to do. But definitely a lot of fun and I’d recommend it to people out there.”

Smith, who was greeted at the finish line by Miss America Nina Davuluri, finished ahead of more than 24,000 mostly women runners. Two sisters from Columbia, SC – Kimberly Ruck and Alyssa Kulik – finished together in second and third place, respectively, (1:26:15), nearly 15 minutes behind Smith.

In all, more than 40,000 runners competed in various events during the weekend. The weekend included the Cinderella Royal Family 5K, the Disney Princess Enchanted 10K, runDisney Kids Races and the inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge, which involved runners completing the 10K on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday.

The weekend event also included the Disney’s Fit for a Princess Expo which featured the latest running apparel and equipment, plus a speaker series involving running experts such as runDisney’s official training consultant Jeff Galloway.

The Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend is one of seven annual runDisney events and the second women-focused event. The other is the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend, which takes place in May at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.  Both events are designed to celebrate and promote women’s empowerment, women’s health and an active lifestyle. And both are among the nation’s largest race weekends geared towards women.
