Disney DIY – Make Your Mom Something Special This Mother’s Day!

1900 3
1900 3

1900 3

Some of my greatest memories are of trips and times spent in Walt Disney World with my mom and dad – and we all love getting and giving gifts that remind us of those trips to the Happiest Place On Earth! And since Mother’s Day is just around the corner (May 11th to be exact!), I figured it would be the perfect time to make something special for my mom – something DISNEY DIY-esque, of course! Here are some great DIY Disney Mother’s Day ideas:

Minnie’s Mother’s Day Bookmark

Make your Mom a cute and practical bookmark that she will love to use!

You’ll Need:

Minnie’s Mother’s Day Bookmark Template

-Scissors

-Cardstock or heavyweight craft paper (black, white, and red)

-Glue stick

-Paper hole punch

-Red ribbon or cord

-2 black beads

Instructions:

1. Print the template and use the pieces to cut out the shapes from the specified colors of cardstock

2. Glue the white bookmark front atop the black back, centering it in place

3. Glue a red letter M atop each of the black M’s. Then punch a series of random holes in each of the double-layer letters

4. Glue the M’s and the Minnie Mouse head atop the bookmark, arranging them to spell the word MOM. The white cardstock will show through the holes in the letters to create Minnie’s signature polka-dots

5. Punch a hole in the top of the bookmark, and thread a piece of red ribbon or cord through the hole. Slip a bead onto each ribbon end and tie a knot below it to keep it from sliding off

Ok, so you’ve made your mom something adorable, now how about baking her something delicious to go along with it? My mom (like many of you, I’m sure!) is a HUGE fan of PEANUT BUTTER – and everyone knows that peanut butter goes amazingly well with chocolate, so when I saw this recipe for the Chocolate Peanut Butter Sandwiches served at the Main Street Confectionary (and other places around the World!), I knew that it would be the perfect thing to surprise my mom with this Mother’s Day:

chocolate-peanut-butter-sandwich

Chocolate Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Ingredients

1. 14-16 ounces high-quality milk chocolate (or 60% dark chocolate)

2. 2 tablespoons butter flavored shortening, melted

3. 6 graham crackers, halved

4. 1 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter

5. 4 ounces cream cheese

6. 1/2 cup sugar

7. 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

-Slowly melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave in increments of 30 seconds.

-Be very sure, especially if using the milk chocolate, that no moisture gets into the chocolate.

-Add melted shortening and stir.

-Dip the graham crackers into the melted chocolate and place on wax paper.

-Place in fridge or freezer to allow to set.

-In a bowl, combine peanut butter, cream cheese, sugar, and melted butter and beat until all ingredients are completely combined.

-Allow to sit in a refrigerator for about 10 minutes.

-Remove graham crackers from fridge along with peanut butter mixture.

-Top graham crackers with peanut butter, about 3/4 inch high, and patted into a flat, square shape (matching the graham cracker).

-Return to fridge for about 10 minutes.

-Re-melt the chocolate.

-Remove peanut butter sandwiches from fridge and dip into the melted chocolate, being sure to cover all exposed areas of peanut butter.

-Return to waxed paper and refrigerate several hours or until firm.

-Either store in covered containers in the fridge or wrap individually with waxed paper and freeze.

There may be a lot of steps to these but they are DEFINITELY WORTH IT – and your mom will love that you went to all that trouble for her (trust me!)

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: A Rocking, Rollicking Family-Friendly Roller Coaster Crowns New Fantasyland

Are you a huge Snow White Fan?  How can you not have a heart for the lovable world of Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey?  Now, at Magic Kingdom, that world comes to life in spring 2014 when the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train takes New Fantasyland guests on a rollicking, musical adventure into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.”

The “crowning jewel” of New Fantasyland, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train represents the completion of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history. The family-style coaster features first-of-its-kind ride vehicles that swing back and forth during the ride. Adding to the fun, the journey will be accompanied by music from the film classic and scenes filled with Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs and playful forest critters.

Attention to Detail

Inspired by the Disney animated film classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the story begins as guests cross a stone bridge and walk through a beautiful forest with the Dwarfs’ cottage in the distance. Then, they step into the attraction entrance and into the timeless story of the radiant and kindhearted Snow White and her forest friends led by the lovable Dwarfs.

When designing the cottage, Walt Disney Imagineers – the creative team behind all the attractions at Disney Parks – referenced the film in order to plan details as intricate as the color combination of roof shingles, the slope of the roof’s eaves, the shape of a lantern, and especially the etched woodland creatures that decorate the house. Props – including lanterns, ropes, pulleys and buckets of shiny jewels – were inspired by items found in the mine scenes of the film. According to Walt Disney Imagineering, jewels appear throughout the mine in four different sizes and in six different colors: red, green, amber, purple, blue and clear.

After passing through an interactive pre-show area with fun activities themed to mining – such as washing and sorting gems – guests will proceed to the mine train. Picks, shovels, barrels and hoists are scattered throughout the queue tunnel and at the load-in area.

“Rocks” ‘n’ Roll

Guests board the specially-designed mine cars and launch into their journey through the mine. Each “train” consists of five mine cars, which seat four guests each. The individual mine cars are designed to reflect similar vehicles that appear in the film, hand-made of wood by the Dwarfs, shaped by an axe, and used to haul rocks and jewels.

As guests twist and turn through the mine, the cars rock back and forth, adding an extra family-friendly thrill element. Riders tour through the cavernous mine’s winding track – jutting outside to climb and dip through the wooded landscape, and then re-entering the mine at different points in the attraction.

As with any classic Disney “dark ride,” the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train features spectacular Audio-Animatronics – with cars slowing down so guests can spot favorite characters making an appearance in different scenes.

New Fantasyland

Representing the largest expansion in the nearly-43-year history of Magic Kingdom, the spectacular new space features attractions, dining, shopping, character interactions, recreation and more – laid out fairy tale-style amid waterfalls, grottoes, arched bridges, forests and circus big tops. A multiyear expansion project, New Fantasyland lies just beyond the existing Fantasyland in the shadows of Cinderella Castle.

New Fantasyland comprises the Enchanted Forest and Storybook Circus areas. Walt Disney Imagineers brought to life beloved Disney stories and magical places, putting guests in the middle of Disney classics and new favorites – and making memories to last a lifetime.

Guests are transported to a far-off French village to spend time with Belle and play a part in her story. They hop aboard a clamshell to venture deep into the undersea world of Ariel, take a rollicking coaster ride to barnstorm with the Great Goofini or spin through the sky with everyone’s favorite pachyderm – Dumbo, the Flying Elephant.

Kids can take a cooling break among the circus wagons at the Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station where monkeys, elephants and camels squirt water and even Casey Jr. spouts clouds of mist. Shopping delights await at Bonjour! Village Gifts and Big Top Souvenirs. When the hungries hit, guests are able to choose everything from on-the-go eats washed down with LeFou’s Brew — a signature drink, at the quick-service Gaston’s Tavern — to elegant ballroom dining at Be Our Guest restaurant, nestled under the stars in Beast’s Castle.

Opened in Fall 2013, Princess Fairytale Hall is the new regal home to Disney Princesses greeting their loyal subjects. Not only does Fantasyland double in size, Magic Kingdom castles triple. Across the skyline of the most popular theme park in the world,  the iconic Cinderella Castle is now joined by the distant ramparts of Beast’s Castle while stately Prince Eric’s Castle looms above the grottoed entrance to Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid.

‘Harambe Nights’ is Opening at the Animal Kingdom June 7th

Harambe Nights
Harambe Nights

Harambe nights

You may have heard about “Harambe Nights” at the Animal Kingdom. It will be an amazing theatrical production based on the “The Lion King,” and a street party with gourmet dining will debut in June 2014 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Oscar-winning movie.

The show will be a 55-minute theatrical extravaganza, “The Lion King Concert in the Wild” comprises celebrity narrators, a live orchestra, choir and special effects to present the story of Simba’s coming of age like never before.  A lively welcome reception and the post-show street party featuring Afro-pop rhythms, performers and a buffet of culinary creations keep the celebration rocking through the evening.

Harambe nights 1

The theme park’s first-ever ticketed special event will welcome guests every Saturday from June 7 through August 9 to this memorable evening of theatrical storytelling, inspired dining, live music and dance amid the non-stop fun of an immersive street party.

It all begins with a welcome reception in the park’s Harambe Village where savory appetizers and a selection of refreshing wines and beers are on the menu.

Soon after, guests will find their seats waiting at the brand-new Harambe Theatre, where dramatic lighting, breathtaking scenic pieces and projection exclusive to this production will transport them to the African savanna.  “The Lion King Concert in the Wild” show brings the humor and heart of the story to life by blending excerpts from the Disney classic film with stage theatrics.  Each week, a celebrity narrator backed by a live orchestra will join a company of singers and dancers to recreate the drama of an African story circle.  The lineup of narrators will include Viola Davis, David Alan Grier, Joe Morton and other noteworthy actors.

Beginning with the iconic birth-of-Simba scene and continuing through the show’s gripping climax, guests will be immersed in Simba’s journey to find his place as the Lion King.  The guest narrator adds emotional perspective to the original tale inspired, in part, by African folklore and Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

As the show wraps, the celebration continues in Harambe Village to the tune of live Afro-pop rhythms.  Dancers, costumed stilt-performers, puppets, popular characters from “The Lion King” and a DJ ratchet up the fun and encourage guests to participate in the street party.

The celebration will feature a culinary nod to Africa with multiple buffet stations of perfectly seasoned dishes for pairing with a selection of beers, wines and specialty beverages all included in the event admission.  Soft drinks and water also are offered.  Sweet bites of gourmet desserts under the stars and a special farewell experience will deliver a delicious ending to a magical evening.

Exclusive Lion King-themed merchandise and collectibles will be available to Harambe Nights guests.  A limited-release case for iPhones 4 and 5 designed by Disney Design Group artist Randy Noble will feature imagery from “The Lion King,” and a 20th anniversary “The Lion King” puzzle will be offered.   Other exclusive merchandise will include art and apparel.

General admission tickets for Harambe Nights run $119 ages 10 and up; $79 ages 9 and under.  Premium floor seating tickets run $134 ages 10 and up; $94 ages 9 and under.  The event runs from 7-10:30 p.m., and parking is complimentary.

Star Wars A New Dawn
Star Wars A New Dawn

Star Wars A New Dawn

Disney Publishing Worldwide and Del Rey Books, along with Lucasfilm,  are working together to create a new line of Star Wars adult fiction novels.

The new books will be closely related to the new Star Wars story-lines being created for new films that are in production now.

Star Wars: Episode VII, is tentatively set for a December 2015 release.

Random House said that Lucasfilm, looking to unify the story around Star Wars-branded content, is mapping out a narrative that will appear “on film and television and other media.” The goal, RH continued, is to ensure “all projects will benefit from real-time collaboration and alignment.”

The first book in the new Star Wars line up is Star Wars: A New Dawn, It is set “prior to the events of the forthcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels.” The book follows how the show’s 2 main characters, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla, meet.

The book is set for a hardcover and e-book release on September 2, 2014.

Two more Star Wars novels are also set: Star Wars: Tarkin (November 2014) and Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi (January 2015).

seven dwarfs mine train fun facts

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is the newest addition to Fantasyland at Disney’s Magic Kingdom park!  This much anticipated attraction is set to open in May.  The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is the creation of the ever imaginative Disney Imagineers.  For every Disney traveler, knowing the fun facts about many of the attractions, like the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is part of the extra magic of a Disney vacation.  Let’s take a look at some of the Seven Dwarf Mine Train Fun Facts.

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, in the Enchanted Forest of New Fantasyland (Magic Kingdom), is a family coaster inspired by the film classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” that takes Walt Disney World Resort guests into the famous mine, glittering with diamonds, rubies, and other precious gems, where the Seven Dwarfs sing happily as they work.
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is almost completely “on stage.” With its location in the middle of New Fantasyland, guests aboard the rockin’ coaster are afforded amazing views from all angles.
  • The footprints of forest creatures, large and small, and the impressions of sticks, stones and acorns are embedded in the dirt path that meanders through the Enchanted Forest, leading to the attraction.
  • The Dwarfs cottage is a meticulously detailed representation of the cozy home seen in the classic film, down to the wisteria vine and birdhouse at the front door.
  • At the first interactive station in the attraction queue, Doc’s note explains the jewel washing game. As the jewels flow by in a wooden trough, or sluice, guests touch and drag them into a tray on the side of the sluice, matching them by color and shape. The trough is about 15 feet long and is accessible from both sides.
  • At the third interactive station in the queue, “Vault” is carved into the wooden crosspiece, or lintel, above the doorway. This is a reference to the scene in the film where Dopey opens the vault and throws in a bag of gems, then locks the door with a key. For safekeeping, Dopey hangs the key to the vault on a peg next to the door. The key hangs on a peg next to the entrance to the vault in the queue as well.
  • The figures of Grumpy, Doc, Bashful, Sleepy, and Happy, seen in the cottage near the end of the attraction, originally appeared in Snow White’s Scary Adventure, a Magic Kingdom attraction now the site of Princess Fairytale Hall. The figures of Snow White, Dopey and Sneezy, in the cottage scene, were created for this attraction.
  • The two vultures perched on the jib crane near the mine entrance are styled after the vultures in the film and originally appeared in the Snow White’s Scary Adventure attraction.
  • The individual mine cars are designed to reflect similar vehicles that appear in the film, handmade of wood by the Dwarfs, shaped with an ax, and used to haul rocks and jewels. Hand-hammered metal bands and nails are used to bind the wood. In the film, the mine cars sit in a cradle that allows them to be tipped to unload their contents. Here, the cradle design allows the cars to swing back and forth as they carry riders along the winding track.
  • The innovative, patented ride system for the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is an original design developed at Walt Disney Imagineering. It features five-car trains designed to swing independently from side to side as they move along the track. This newly patented design provides a one-of-a-kind ride experience.
  • Next to Doc’s workstation in the mine, the carved wooden clock is a replica of the one seen in the film with the figures of two miners striking an anvil. As in the film, that motion signals the start of the beloved song, “Heigh-Ho.”
  • At the jewel washing station, a melody from the classic film can be created by moving from spigot to spigot. There are 12 spigots, corresponding to the notes of the musical scale.
  • The jewels seen throughout the mine come in three different sizes and six different colors: red, green, amber, purple, blue and clear.
  • The shadows of the Dwarfs marching homeward along the track on the lift inside of the mine were rotoscoped from the scene in the original film where the Dwarfs march across a log bridge, singing “…home from work we go.” (Rotoscoping is a technique where the movements of a figure in original live or animated footage are copied, or traced, frame-by-frame).
  • At the top of the second lift, guests have a brief moment to enjoy an inspiring view across Fantasyland to Belle’s cottage, Beast’s Castle above Be Our Guest Restaurant, and beyond. Then, the track drops precipitously, passing under a trestle and looping around the mountain crossing over the same trestle. The vehicle picks up speed as it careens down the mountain, twisting and turning, with its cars swinging back and forth. At the foot of the mountain, the mine train loops back to cross a pool at the bottom of a waterfall.
  • In the original tale by the Brothers Grimm, the Dwarfs were unnamed. When Walt Disney and his animators decided to name them to correspond with their character, scores of names were rejected including: Wheezy, Jumpy, Baldy, Hickey, Sniffy, Stuffy, Burpy, Tubby, Shorty, Deafy and Dizzy.
  • In the last view of the cottage, around the corner of the far wall, the Wicked Queen can be seen in her disguise as an old hag watching Snow White and the Dwarfs through a cottage window. She turns toward the train as it passes, and cackles wickedly.

DisneyNature Bears Generates Support for National Parks

Disneynature and the National Park Foundation (NPF) are celebrating the results of their conservation initiative tied to the new movie “Bears”. See “BEARS,” protect our national parks committed a portion of ticket sales during opening week (April 18-24, 2014) to the NPF, and as a result of fans’ enthusiasm.

Disneynature, through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, is supporting NPF programs across the National Park System, which will:

  •  Benefit parks that cover 2.9 million acres of our nation’s most treasured land.
  •  Restore or conduct research on more than 400,000 acres of national park service land.
  •  Study and protect at least 75 species of animals and plants—many of which are endangered or threatened.
  •  Provide internships to more than 60 high school and college students to conduct authentic, place-based field research.
  •  Educate thousands of school groups, teachers, families and other park visitors on the importance of wildlife protection and habitat restoration.
  •  Support landscapes that range from the long-leaf pine forests of South Carolina to the slickrock country of the Colorado Plateau to the beaches of Hawaii.

“Disneynature’s ‘Bears’ highlights one of the many wonderful natural places in our own backyard, and Disney is honored to work with the National Park Foundation to help protect important wildlife habitat and educate our nation’s youth about these essential sites,” said Alan Bergman, president, The Walt Disney Studios. “We are proud of the impact the movie will have thanks to those who supported ‘Bears’ during opening week, and we are thrilled to expand our commitment to conservation through an additional donation specifically earmarked to help more than 100,000 children experience America’s national parks firsthand, many of them for the first time.”

“Disney has repeatedly demonstrated its incredible commitment to preserving and protecting America’s national parks while simultaneously engaging our country’s youth in these special places,” said Neil Mulholland, president and CEO of the National Park Foundation. “We are excited to expand our collaboration and dramatically increase the critical impact potential thanks to Disney’s generous contributions.”

The Disneynature conservation efforts surrounding “Bears” attracted support from within Disney and beyond:

  • Young fans unlocked an exclusive bear costume on Disney Club Penguin to support the National Park Foundation:
  •  The Disney Music Group is contributing a portion of each iTunes download of Olivia Holt’s Friends for Change anthem “Carry On”.
  •  The Disney Store committed a portion of “Bears” plush purchases to the National Park Foundation.
  •  At Disney Parks, a special Duffy the Disney Bear benefited the National Park Foundation in April.
  •  Disney Cruise Line made a contribution in celebration of the movie, which also premiered on the high seas.
  •  Regal Entertainment Group introduced a gift card program in conjunction with “Bears” that resulted in a contribution to the National Park Foundation.
  •  DODOcase introduced a limited-edition collection of iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPhone 5/5S cases featuring a custom “Bears” design: a portion of each sale went directly to the National Park Foundation.
  •  New York jewelry designer Alex Woo designed eco-friendly pendants inspired by the film, available in Sterling Silver & 14kt Gold—a portion of each sale benefits the National Park Foundation.
