Central Florida Urban League’s Youth Leadership Summit

Central Florida Urban League
Central Florida Urban League

Central Florida Urban league

There were over 150 students from the Central Florida region at Disney’s Contemporary Resort on Saturday May 9th, 2014 to attend workshops focused on professional and personal development. The Central Florida Urban League’s Youth Leadership Summit is designed to help students get ready for the future. Their sessions focused on college readiness, careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), healthy living, and animal conservation.

Disney’s Animal Science & Environment team participated in this effort, teaching students about the importance of creativity and problem solving skills in scientific research. Students worked together in groups to design a tracking device for an animal based on the animal’s physical characteristics and behavior.  They also learned why researchers track animals and how they themselves can help protect wildlife and wild places.

What is Disney Bounding? How do you do it?

ariel
ariel

ariel

First of all, a word of caution! Disney Bounding can be very addicting! Got that?  Now that you’ve been warned, let’s explore what Disney Bounding is.

So what is this crazy Disney Bound thing we keep hearing about?  Easily put, it’s an amalgamation of Disney and fashion. This is a great way to rock your DisneySide at the parks, or even in your everyday life. Disney Bounding is a way of dressing up as your favorite character using inspired color palettes, accessories, and clothing styles to look like the character, without actually being in costume. You simply use items from your own wardrobe or your usual retailers.

Now that we know what it is, how can we do it? Easy! Find a character that inspires you and let your creative juices flow. Look for clothing that has a matching color to your character, or even a similar style. Mix them up with playful accessories that embody your character’s muse.  Going as Merida? Try finding a bow and arrow necklace and maybe even a plaid scarf to emblazon her Celtic pride. The best part is you can dress as casual or fancy as you want. A casual princess Day can be a cute tank top, with shorts that match the colors of her dress. A Disney Addict will know exactly who you are spot lighting, while a casual observer will have no idea you are channeling your inner hero or villain. The possibilities are endless! If you need some help, try checking out Google, Pinterest, or Instagram for ideas.

You can be as obvious or demure about it as you like. A great way to really have your character shine through is by wearing accessories with images featuring them. Custom painted shoes can especially be a great addition to any Disney Bounding outfit. The best part is that with a custom item you know you’ll be unique! Even if you lose your shoe while dancing with Prince Charming at Midnight, you know he’ll be able to find you with your matching one.

Now that we know how to do it, I can’t wait to see your creations! Check out some of ours below if you would like more inspiration. Who do you want to Disney Bound as? Make sure to tell us in the comments!

Top 10 Places to Cool Off at Disney World

WDW Blizzard Beach entrance
WDW Blizzard Beach entrance

WDW_Blizzard_Beach_entrance

Summer is just around the corner, but things are heating up at Disney World already!  It can be important to plan some time to cool off on your Walt Disney World vacation.  Keeping cool and hydrated are critical when the Florida temperatures soar.  Trying to figure out where to go to stay cool?  Let’s take a look at the top 10 places to cool off at Disney World.

  1. Typhoon Lagoon is the tropical themed water park where you are sure to have wild and wet fun.  It boasts a surf pool, water slides, lazy river,  kids’ water play area, and the famous Crush ‘n’ Gusher.   With 7 dining locations and 2 merchandise stores, you won’t go hungry nor do you have to worry about forgetting the sun screen.
  2. Blizzard Beach lovers are sure to tell you how cool it is to chill out here.  There is an awesome chair lift to take you up to 3 slopes that includes Summit Plummet.  Blizzard Beach also showcases a pre-teen water area and a playland for little ones.  Blizzard Beach hosts 8 dining locations and 3 merchandise shops including one location where you can get free life vests for the day.
  3. Kali River Rapids can be found in the Asia section of the Animal Kingdom park.  Make sure to use the lockers close by before you depart on this tempestuous water ride.  Things might get a little bumpy and you are likely to end up very wet on your travels through the jungle landscape.
  4. At Magic Kingdom, Splash Mountain is a zip-a-dee-do-da good time for all.  The water log ride features the story of Brer Rabbit and his pals set to the tune “Song of the South.”  This ride goes slow enough most of the time that you can enjoy the scenery detail Disney created for this ride.  For the best chances of getting wet, ask the Cast Member for a front seat.
  5. Club Cool may be the coolest place yet at Epcot.  Free pop!  This place it your chance to get out of the heat and get something to drink for free!  Club Cool features various pop from around the world to try.  The best part may be watching people’s reactions when trying the “Beverly” pop because it has such an interesting flavor.
  6. Disney Quest located at Downtown Disney housed 5 floors of virtual fun as Disney’s indoor interactive theme park.  At Disney Quest, you can become a pirate and search for treasure, take part in a pinball game, learn how to draw your favorite Disney character, battle super villians, encounter aliens and much more.  The fun is endless and can be a great way to cool off out of the heat.
  7. Also at Downtown Disney is Splitsville.  Splitsville boasts a 30-lane bowling alley with a full food menu, great music, and fun  for everyone.  For those who do not care to bowl, Spiltsville also has several billiard tables.  Rack ’em up!  There are also several lockers to stow your valuables in so you don’t have to lug everything around with you.
  8. What better way to realx and stay cool than at your Resort Pool?  Grab a drink at the bar, snag a lounge chair, or go for a dip you can’t go wrong with any choice.  If you are at a resort with a pool slide, then go get in line!  Whether you are young or old, pool slides can be a great diversion from the heat.
  9. Misting Stations can be found at several locations around Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom.  If none of the above suggestions work for your vacation schedule, then just walk into a misting station and get wet.  There is no easier way to cool off quickly than to go through a misting station.
  10. Book a Table Service Dining reservation for lunch.  Table Service dining guarantees you lunch in an air conditioned location and a good 1 1/2 hours out of the Florida sun.  Plus eating at a Table Service Dining location during lunch is typically cheaper than eating at the same location for dinner.  Win-win!

Reply below with some of your best places to cool off while at Disney World.  We would love to know where you go to stay cool!

Wishing you a magically cool time – Michele

Do You Need a Parkhopper with Small Children at Walt Disney World

DLstartours
DLstartours
star tours

Disney World Parkhoppers are a great idea, allowing you to “hop” from park to park in the same day. Without them, you’re restricted to one park per day no matter how many days are on your ticket.  But they’re also expensive. A family of four can expect to add around $225 (they’re around $55 each)  to their total ticket cost, regardless of whether they stay one day or ten.  Still, I find the park hopper option invaluable.  It allows me to visit one park earlier in the day even if I have a dining reservation in another park.  I can also leave one park and go to a less busy park if I have the hopper option.  But they’re not always a good deal for everyone, particularly those with young children.

So the question is, should you buy parkhoppers if you’re mainly visiting the park with kids?  Well, ask yourself a couple of questions:

1. How old are the kids?  If they’re under five-years old, one park per day is probably more than enough for them and it’s going to be easier on you.

2.  How well do your kids do on Disney transportation?  You’re going to be getting on and off buses several times a day even if you don’t park hop. This can get tiring after a while, especially during the hotter months.  If you’ve got one or more kids in the stroller, it’s also time-consuming.

3.  How serious are you about keeping your kids on their regular schedule? Park hopping, in my experience, always messes up my kids’ schedule because we’re spending more time going from park to park. Invariably, one of them will fall asleep in the car or stroller.  Focusing on just one park per day allows me to fit their naps in more easily because I’m not dealing with as many variables.

4.  Can your budget absorb the cost?  Today, family vacations are a luxury. A lot of people are skipping them altogether or if they’re going, they’re cutting back on little things that can really add up. If you’re budget for your Disney vacation is already pretty bare bones and you still want to cut some costs, this is a good way to do it.  Adding just $200 extra to your food and souvenir budget can allow you to say “yes” more often to your kids when they want a treat.

If you decide not to add the option, you’ll need to prepare a bit more carefully.  Just make sure your park days coincide with your dining reservations.  You don’t want to end up in the Magic Kingdom on a day when you have a Fantasmic dinner package reservation at Hollywood Studios.  If you find that you need the option, you can always add it later in your trip. There’s no advantage to adding it before you go; even discount brokers charge the same amount.

Disney needs to Bring Back Roger Rabbit

Roger Rabbit
Roger Rabbit

Roger Rabbit

Over the years, there have been many walk around characters who have come and gone at Walt Disney World. Among them is Roger Rabbit. From the late 1980s through the 1990s, Roger Rabbit could easily be found in multiple Disney parks. He was often seen with other Disney characters aboard a double decker bus at Epcot. Roger Rabbit could also be found at Disney-MGM Studios, as it was called at the time. Even my favorite Disney parade, SpectroMagic, had a place for Roger Rabbit!

Unfortunately, the Roger Rabbit walk around character at the parks didn’t last past the 1990s. He’s no longer appears at Epcot; in fact, Roger Rabbit can’t be found at any Walt Disney World park. When SpectroMagic returned to the Magic Kingdom in 2001, he had been replaced as the parade conductor by Genie from Aladdin. The only place I know of to find Roger Rabbit at Walt Disney World today is the giant figure pictured above which is located in the 1980s section of Disney’s Pop Century Resort.

I don’t know about you, but I think it’s about time Disney bring back Roger Rabbit. After all, the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special blu-ray release. Sounds like a pretty good time to bring back this character at Walt Disney World, don’t you think? I would love to see Roger Rabbit in a parade. He was always so fun to watch in SpectroMagic back in the ’90s! Hollywood Studios also sounds like a great place for a Roger Rabbit appearance. Hopefully, Disney will bring Roger Rabbit back to the parks at some point.

Do you have any memories of meeting Roger Rabbit at Walt Disney World? Share them with us in the comments below!

Ten Disney Dining Reservations that are not Impossible to Get

The Crystal Palace1
The Crystal Palace1

The_Crystal_Palace1

Disney dining reservations can cause some frustration, and stress, for a lot of travelers.  Disney encourages you to make your Advanced Dining Reservations as early as possible, at 180 days in advance of your arrival.   But what if you are are closer to arrival and haven’t made any?  Or what if you are waiting on other factors-such as which nights you can get Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party or Mickey’s Not Scary Halloween Party tickets?  No fear!   I want to share with you the Ten Disney Dining Reservations that are not Impossible to Get!

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall:  Akershus is located in Norway at EPCOT’s World Showcase.  This is an EXCELLENT princess dining experience for all three meals of the day!  Often, you will see up to five princesses while dining here. Your little princess can also take part in the princess  parade throughout the banquet hall with her princess friends.   Akershus is an EXCELLENT alternative to Cinderella’s Royal Table for a princess  meal.

Cape May:  Cape May is located at Disney’s Beach Club Resort.  Cape May hosts Mickey and his friends in their beach gear for breakfast every morning.  Cape May is easy to get an ADR for, since most guests like to try for Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary.  So, if you are looking for a breakfast with the “classic” characters, Cape May is an excellent choice!

Garden Grill:  Garden Grill is located at EPCOT in the Living with the Land building.  Even though this location is only open for dinner hours, it is still easy to get an ADR here.  Chip and Dale serve up an all American harvest feast, while you can enjoy the slowly rotating views of The Land attraction.  Dinner is served family style, and the menu is great for picky eaters who prefer some easy to enjoy foods.

1900 Park Fare:  1900 Park Fare is located at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa in the Magic Kingdom area.  The nice thing about 1900 Park Fare is that it is a great alternative to dining with princesses at either EPCOT or Cinderella’s Royal Table.  Although it is “only” Cinderella, Prince Charming, the stepsisters, and the stepmother at breakfast, it still gives you that princess experience.  They also serve breakfast with Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter, etc.  Although those characters are popular, they aren’t always as popular as the classic characters and princesses.

Liberty Tree Tavern:  Liberty Tree Tavern is located at Magic Kingdom Park.  There are six historically themed rooms at Liberty Tree Tavern, and the food is served family style.  This is also a great dining option for families with less adventurous eaters.  They serve lunch and dinner, and if you time your meals right, you can step right outside to Liberty Square to get a spot for watching the afternoon Festival of Fantasy Parade.

Boma:  Boma is located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  They serve breakfast and dinner…in fact, I’ve heard it is so good that some guests book breakfast AND dinner there during their stay!  Even so, reservations here are easy to get.  After you have enjoyed your meal, you can explore Animal Kingdom Lodge and enjoy seeing the animals in the savannas.

Whispering Canyon Cafe:  Whispering Canyon Cafe is located at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort.  They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner-part of the reason why it’s easy to get reservations!  Also, the wait staff makes the experience fun, with their wise cracking jokes and short entertainment spiels while you eat.  This is a great location to eat if you need an ADR and a break from Magic Kingdom, since it’s just a boat ride away!

Tusker House:  Tusker House is located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park.  Donald and his friends are in their safari gear for breakfast and lunch.  For dinner, there are no characters-but fabulous African themed food on the menu.  This is another fun location with a unique character experience.  Since Animal Kingdom isn’t really a full day park, making an ADR at Tusker House can be a great way to spend some of your day there.

The Grand Floridian Cafe:  The Grand Floridian Cafe is located at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.  This is a quaint, quiet, yet airy restaurant serving Victorian favorites.  If you want to enjoy a nice breakfast, lunch, or dinner in a classy and beautiful atmosphere, the Grand Floridian Cafe is for you!

The Crystal Palace:  The Crystal Palace is located at Disney’s Magic Kingdom park.  This restaurant is Winnie the Pooh and his 100 Acre Wood Friends for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I feel like this location is easy to get ADRs for since it also serves all three meals of the day.  No matter which meal you choose, your family will love dining in the bright and cheery greenhouse atmosphere of the Crystal Palace.

Are any of these locations a favorite of yours?  What am I missing?
