Big Brothers and Big Sisters Mine Train Opening

7 pairs of adults and kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida joined Orlando Magic players Victor Oladipo and Tobias Harris officially opened the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a great addition to New Fantasyland and represents the completion of the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom Park. Inspired by the classic Disney animated film classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” this fun, family-friendly roller coaster features a first-of-its kind ride system in which cars pivot back and forth during the twists, turns and drops of the ride.

“Our Bigs and Littles giggled and rocked their way through this fun adventure and will always remember being a part of the opening day magic for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train,” said Jada Smith, chief executive officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida.

After passing through an interactive pre-show area with mining-themed activities – such as washing and sorting gems – guests will board the mine train and will be transported through magical mountain scenery and a glowing mine. Music from the film classic accompanies the journey. As with any classic Disney attraction, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train features spectacular Audio-Animatronics – with cars slowing down so guests can spot favorite characters making an appearance in various scenes.

Disney Dining Ins & Outs of the Mickey’s Kitchen Sink at Disney World

Kitchen Sink

Recently I had a chance to try the Mickey Kitchen Sink in the Magic Kingdom at The Plaza Restaurant. After a delicious dinner I accepted this Disney Dining Ice Cream challenge.

05-wd0909-The-Kitchen-Sink-2

Having tried the much larger Kitchen Sink at Beaches & Cream at the Yacht & Beach Club Resort and failing miserably even with 5 helpers I was confident I could take down this mini version.

Just like the much larger Kitchen sink this Mickey version is packed with flavor. Missing was all the brownie and cake pieces. Really the dessert was more a sundae and not quite on the same level as the Kitchen Sink. It had all the other extras just not the filler.

Kitchen Sink

While really good even with the new lower price I had one major complaint. When you finish or almost finish it they will not rinse it out for you. I mean really? They tell you to walk to the bathoom outside and go rinse it out yourself. Come on Disney what kinda customer service is that?

Ok I lied I had more than one complaint but this didn’t really bother me as I don’t use Disney Dining Plan but the couple next to me wanted a kitchen sink too but couldn’t trade in their 2 desserts credits for 1 kitchen sink, the waiter wouldn’t even upcharge them for the bowl. I think Disney needs to work on that.

Overall it was a tasty sundae but I will be honest it is no Kitchen Sink. You can get the Mickey Kitchen Sink at the Plaza or next door at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor the price is now down from $28 to $14.99.

Have you tried out this tasty treat yet? Tell me what you think in the comment box below.

Updates and changes to the 2014 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

Epcot food and wine
Epcot food and wine

Epcot food and wine

Are you planning on attending the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival this year? If not than it’s never to early to start planning your Disney vacation. Just a heads up you do have some time because this years festival runs from September 19 to November 10. That is a record 53 days this year!

In case you don’t know about the festival here are some basics. You get to leisurely walk around Epcot and take in the sights while you sip and nibble on great drinks and foods from around the world.  Don’t forget to pick up your free passport and have it stamped as make your way around the ‘world’.

Did you know there is more to the Epcot Food & Wine Festival than just, well, food and wine. There is the Eat to the Beat Concerts, signature dinners, the Ocean Spray Cranberry Bog, a new “Back to Basics” Festival Center series and a new Friday morning celebrity chefs cookbook event called “Food for Thought.”

The Saturday morning Parisian Breakfast is back this year, and a new Sunday morning event called “Sunday Mornings With …” that will be a plated brunch with a pastry chef or baker crafting 3 fabulous desserts for guests.

Here are some more new things coming up this year:

  • Patagonia Marketplace will merge the flavors of Argentina and Chile in dishes like sustainable roasted Verlasso salmon with quinoa salad drizzled with a kicky arugula chimichurri. You can pair that with a couple of great Chilean wines: Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier or Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Noir Rosé.
  • Farm Fresh Market replaces last year’s Florida Local Marketplace, with a perfect “brinner” (breakfast for dinner) dish: “Bacon and Eggs,” with applewood-smoked, pepper-coated bacon, sweet corn, potatoes, Hollandaise and pickled jalapeños. Or try the griddled “yard bird” (chicken) with braised greens. Happy to see Orlando Brewing Company’s I-4IPA on the menu, as well as trendy Ba Ba Black Lager from Salt Lake City’s Uinta Brewing Company.
  • Brazil Marketplace is back with that wildly popular crispy pork belly with black beans, onions, avocado and cilantro, but chefs also are adding mocequa de pescado (tilapia with coconut lime sauce and steamed rice), pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) and cocadas (Brazilian coconut candy).
  • The Poland Marketplace switches up the popular pierogi with a new sauerkraut pierogi and pork goulash.

You’ll need reservations for certain events and they do require an additional fee: Party for the Senses grand tasting events, signature dinners and other special wine and culinary programs. Information and reservations for some events will be at epcotfoodfestival.com.

Disney has announced the release of “Maleficent”: The Official Multi-Touch Book.  The book, which you can get for free exclusively through iBooks. The books include a interactive timeline of the origins of the timeless “Sleeping Beauty” tale, with rare content from the Disney archives; rich and explorable environments, filled with fantastic creatures from the world of “Maleficent”—waiting to be discovered at your fingertips; interviews with Angelina Jolie and the cast and crew responsible for bringing the reimagined story to the big screen; an afterword by director Robert Stromberg, two-time Academy Award, winner for production design on “Alice in Wonderland” and “Avatar”; exclusive behind-the-scenes photo galleries and video featurettes; never-before-seen concept art, storyboards and sketches from pre-production; fun facts from the set; and profiles of the characters from the film, all created by Apple’s digital book creation app, iBooks Author.

The “Maleficent” book is available for free, exclusively on iBooks at:  http://di.sn/hf7

A little background about my favorite Villain. “Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

“Maleficent” opens in U.S. theaters on May 30, 2014. Very Soon!!

I can’t wait for this movie!

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Around the Clubhouse World Review

around the clubhouse world
around the clubhouse world

around the clubhouse world

Disney has just released a new DVD, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Around the Clubhouse World. This exciting new episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse takes you all over the clubhouse world, exploring and adventuring to new destinations.

“Climb the Eiffel Tower in France and say “bonjour” to Mademoiselle Daisy and Monsieur Donald Duck. Then, rescue Gondolier Goofy when he goes adrift in Italy’s Grand Canal; solve the mysterious riddle of Pharaoh Pete’s pyramid in Egypt, and meet a dancing dragon at the Great Wall of China. With your help – and the right Mouseketools – your Clubhouse friends can get their special passport stamped at each wonderful location.”

There are fun new songs in this new episode, such as Goofy’s Gondola song:

Another fun song is Pete’s Dancing Like a Pharaoh Song:

The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Around the Clubhouse World DVD  includes four additional Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes the whole family is sure to love, including Donald and the Beanstalk and Goofy on Mars. The DVD even comes with a passport for your kids to play with. There are stickers included for each country as well as a postcard for each country that they can fill out describing their adventures.

My son loved watching Mickey and the gang on their exciting adventures all over the clubhouse world. As a parent, I appreciate the educational aspects found in this episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. As Mickey and Minnie visit each country, their dress changes and they not only explore the new “country,” but also learn a few expressions in the language. There are many opportunities to use this as a starter tool to teach little ones about other places around the world.

Dining at Disney – Sharing Is Caring!

Sharing CakePop
Sharing CakePop

Sharing-CakePop-500x375

Vacationing at Walt Disney World is so many things – fun, amazing, filled with memories, and – it can also be a bit pricey. There are tons of ways to save money on your WDW vacation, and one of my favorite ways is to practice the preschool-taught principle of SHARING my snacks! Normally, I would never advocate sharing food – but there are some items at WDW that are too delicious (and too big!) not to share with someone you love! Here are my Top 5 Picks for meals/snacks that are shareable money savers:

Cheesy Pesto Bread at the Art Of Animation Resort – this yummy treat can be purchased for a snack credit at the Resort’s Landscape of Flavors food court – it includes two pieces of fresh bread topped with pesto and mozzarella cheese and served with marinara sauce for dipping – the perfect savory mid-day treat

Sharing Bfinger

The Butterfinger Cupcake at Starring Roles in Disney’s Hollywood Studios – This cupcake is insanely huge, and also insanely delicious! It’s a moist chocolate cupcake with a fudge center, and it’s topped with a mound of vanilla buttercream that is covered in a chocolate shell with tons of Butterfinger Bits in it. You may go into sugar overload if you eat the whole thing on your own – so it’s really best for your health to share it. An important side note – many specialty cupcakes here and at other locations around WDW are on the large side so they work really well for sharing

The Bounty Platter – This breakfast plate is available in some form at most WDW Resort quick service locations, and it consists of a Mickey waffle/pancake, a biscuit, breakfast meat (sausage/bacon), scrambled eggs, and breakfast potatoes. It costs about $9, and is definitely big enough to split between two adults (or even 3 smaller kids!) – talk about a breakfast bargain!

Sharing CinnRoll

Cinnamon Roll at Gaston’s Tavern – These big beauties used to be available at the Main Street Bakery, but luckily they have not vanished – as a similar version can be found at Gaston’s! They are served warm and fresh (and sometimes with extra frosting if you ask nicely!), and are huge – a perfect afternoon pick me up in the form of cinnamon and sugary goodness

Sharing Burger

The Disney Burger – Found all over the World, these are pretty standard as far as burgers go – many are now served on a wheat bun, and almost all of them can be topped with cheese, bacon, and other assorted condiments. They are pretty big, and come with a giant side helping of French fries – which makes this a pretty good meal to share if you’re in the mood for a burger (this particular one came from Tomorrowland Terrace and the burger was great but for me it was the fries that stole the show!)

Hopefully this gives you some ideas as to how you can save some money on Disney Dining on your next trip – and if you want to go further and maximize your snack credits then read on here!

four seasons disney world

The new Four Seasons Orlando resort provided Destinations To Explore with a “hard hat” tour of the new resort, recently. Expected to open on August 3, 2014, the new Four Seasons Orlando resort provides Orlando vacation guests with a level of luxury never seen before in the Orlando market!

Located within the Walt Disney World Resort, guests will enter the resort through the Golden Oak gate. Located near the Ft. Wilderness Resort, Four Seasons Resort will offer breathtaking views of all four Disney theme parks and the nightly Magic Kingdom fireworks.

As their new General Manager says,

“We could not be more delighted that Disney chose to collaborate with us,” says Thomas Steinhauer, Regional Vice President and General Manager for Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort. “Our Resort offers incredible amenities never before seen at a stand-alone luxury resort in Florida. We offer an experience that our guests are going to love, plus endless recreational pursuits on property for guests to enjoy on a day off from the parks.”

For a day off from the parks, there’s plenty of entertainment to be had without setting foot off the Resort. A highlight of Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort is the five-acre (two hectare) Explorer Island water park, including a winding lazy river complete with a rapids section, two water slides, an interactive splash zone with water cannons, and much more. Family fun abounds, with activities including table tennis, bocce ball, beach volleyball, a rock climbing wall, and more all found at Explorer Island. The Hideout at Explorer Island is a separate freestanding building offering the latest gaming systems, and even an Italian gelateria. Additionally, The Mansion at Explorer Island is home to the Kids For All Seasons program, providing a complimentary kids camp for children ages 5 to 12 on a daily basis during the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm – a one-of-a-kind offering in central Florida.

While children are having a blast at Kids For All Seasons, moms and dads can enjoy relaxation at the 18- treatment room Spa, or unwind in the paradise of The Oasis adult pool, for ages 21 and up, featuring cabanas and poolside cocktail service. In addition, golfers will love the 18-hole golf course, newly redesigned by Tom Fazio, and tennis aficionados will enjoy the three Har-Tru tennis courts and a variety of clinics, matches and more offered in partnership with Peter Burwash International. A spacious lakeside fitness centre is available 24-hours a day, with fitness classes ranging from yoga to cardio offered on a daily basis.

Additionally, Fabrizio Schenardi has joined the opening team of Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort as Executive Chef. Schenardi will oversee the culinary operations for the Resort’s five on-property restaurants, plus in-room dining and catering culinary operations.

Four Seasons Orlando Resort  at Walt Disney World Resort will offer a variety of dining concepts, available to both Resort guests and local Orlando area residents. From a swanky rooftop steakhouse concept to a lakeside Southern rotisserie grill and an Italian pizza and pasta family style restaurant, there is something for everyone.

Four Seasons Orlando Resort will also offer a Character Breakfast, featuring Goofy and his pals twice, weekly at the Ravello Restaurant! The buffet-style breakfast will be offered on Thursdays and Saturdays, and also on Tuesdays during peak school break periods, and will feature a wonderful assortment of traditional breakfast offerings and an omelet station. A photographer will be available to capture the memories of the families with the stars of the breakfast, the always entertaining Goofy & Pals.

The resort will offer complimentary transportation to the four Disney World theme parks, as well as town car service to area attractions, for a small fee.

Four Seasons Disney World offers a truly unique vacation option for Orlando vacations. Our team was thoroughly impressed with the resort, even in it’s “incomplete” stages. We expect this to be a popular new destination for Orlando visitors.

Four Seasons Disney World will offer introductory rates during it’s first month of operation, below their normal rates. Now is the time to save and then splurge on the amazing Four Seasons Disney World.

15 Students Recognized as Shining Stars by Disney Dreamers & Doers

Disney Dreamers and Doers Shining Stars

As we are wrapping up the school year, Disney Dreamers and Doers wanted to recognize Central Florida’s youngest humanitarians and community service leaders. Walt Disney World Resort recently recognized 15 local students with exceptional achievements, naming them Disney Dreamers & Doers Shining Stars.

Making a difference through their kindness and hard work, Disney Dreamers & Doers consistently demonstrate outstanding character and lead by example. Students selected for the Shining Star distinction include a second grader who befriends and assists disabled students, an eighth grader who created a documentary promoting South African girls’ education and a high school senior whose guidance in fitness and nutrition helped a friend lose more than 100 pounds.

“Here at Walt Disney World Resort, we continue to be impressed by our community’s youngest citizens and are inspired by the positive impact they have on Central Florida,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “Through compassion, vision and hard work, these dedicated students act on their dreams of changing the world.”

Approximately 400 students were chosen by their schools for this distinguished award. From all the 2014 Disney Dreamers & Doers named, a panel of judges selected the 15 Shining Stars from elementary, middle and high schools in Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Seminole counties. In its 31st year, the Disney Dreamers & Doers program has recognized nearly 13,000 students since the program began.

“We’re proud of all of our students at Lawton Chiles Middle School, but it’s especially gratifying to count a Disney Dreamer & Doer Shining Star among our Panthers,” said Dr. Margaret Gunderson, principal of Lawton Chiles Middle School in Seminole County. “This honor exemplifies our school’s community spirit and commitment to excellence.”

Disney Dreamers & Doers Shining Stars receive a Mickey Mouse statue known as a “Mousecar,” a gold medallion and annual theme park passes for themselves and their immediate family.

The 2014 Disney Dreamers & Doers Shining Stars are:

2014 SHINING STARS – LAKE COUNTY

Elementary School

Belle Orser, Kindergarten, Christian Home & Bible School

When new school construction necessitated K-12 students sharing a common campus, Belle Orser found herself constantly picking up litter. Concerned the trash would attract biting ants or make a snapping turtle sick from eating garbage, Belle bravely approached the high school principal. After hearing her concerns, the principal invited her to speak at a middle and high school assembly to inform students how littering was affecting her friends, school and the environment. Because of Belle’s actions, students are now committed to a clean, safe and environmentally friendly campus.

Middle School

Scout Updike, 6th grade, Mount Dora Middle

When his cousin was diagnosed with leukemia, Scout Updike decided to pair his love for baseball with helping families affected by childhood cancer. With the support of his team, Scout has raised more than $20,000 through auctions, raffles and t-shirt sales. The fundraising helps with his family’s hospital bills, while the cancer ribbons his team sports on their jerseys and caps promote their hope for cancer-free childhoods for all kids. A teacher has praised Scout’s leadership and maturity, as well as his youthful enthusiasm for the cause.

High School

Angelea Mulkey, 10th grade, Solid Rock Christian School

After her parents “went their own way” when she was just eight years old, Angelea Mulkey moved in with her grandmother and took on a mothering role for her brother. Today, Angelea works an after-school janitorial job to help with family finances. Each day after school and work, she prepares dinner to ensure the family eats together before the focus turns to homework. Believing her current sacrifices will make her strong for the future, Angelea dreams of becoming a lawyer. Averyan’s teachers say that although losing her mom has been difficult, she has grown in strength and character.

Middle School

Charis Watler, 11th grade, Cornerstone Charter Academy

Teachers say Charis Watler “exudes determination and resilience.” After losing their home following the 2008 economic downturn, Charis’ family lived in a shelter, which she found “terrifying.” But through the kindness of fellow residents, Charis began to feel more comfortable and appreciated the care her family received. Inspired by the challenges facing children there, she began making boxes of clothing, backpacks and school supplies for the country’s orphans. Two weeks after her supplies arrived, the MacFarlane family received news of their dad’s death. Though devastated, Chloe remained dedicated to America’s military families. She volunteered with a group that bakes cookies for deployed soldiers, makes wreaths for the fallen and sends gifts to kids who have a parent in military service. Chloe’s teachers admire her commitment to helping others, even after her family’s tragedy.

Five Disney Dining Tips for Your Arrival and Departure Days

Arrival and departure days at Walt Disney World can require just as much thought as the days in between.  Whether you are flying in or driving in, when you arrive at Walt Disney World,  you are ready to start your trip and you are also probably a bit tired.  So how do you manage a hungry family in need of some Disney magic after being in the car or in airports all day?  These days are a great time to enjoy some of the Disney restaurants outside the parks.  Today I am sharing some Disney Dining Tips for Your Arrival and Departure Days.

  • Consider a very late dinner, or a quick service dinner, on your arrival day.  Flights can be delayed, and even when you board the Magical Express, you may not be at your resort for up to an hour after.  Allow yourself about 90 minutes or better from the time you land to the time you arrive at your resort and check in.  In this case, a quick service dinner or a dinner around 8PM would be a good idea.
  • Plan on eating outside the Disney Parks.  Whether it is counter or table service, using a park ticket on your arrival or departure day for a meal isn’t the best use of your time.  Consider the Downtown Disney area, your resort restaurant, the Monorail resorts, or the Boardwalk area.
  • Have a character meal upon arriving or before departing.  This gives you an opportunity to meet some characters, enjoy a good meal, and leave with some sweet Disney memories.
  • Use all your meal credits before your departure day.  The Disney Magical Express will pick you up about 3 hours before your flight.  This may almost guarantee you a meal at the airport.  So instead of leaving Disney with unused credits, be sure to just have a few snacks, or no entitlements left on your departure day.  If you are driving home, perhaps some sandwiches to go from your Quick Service location or Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney is a good idea!
  • Consider adding one more day of park tickets so it covers your arrival or departure day.  Adding another day of tickets can cost as little as $10 per person.  It may be worth it to only have a “half park day” on you arrival or departure day to get that dining experience you really want.  If you can time it right with your flights or departure time, it may work out well!  Many guests take the earliest flight into Orlando and the latest flight out.  Just because you want to head to a park on your arrival or departure doesn’t mean you have to do a full out touring plan.  Go in, enjoy a meal, and the parade or fireworks and head back for bed and to get ready for a full day.
