Ten Planning Tips to a Smoother Walt Disney World Vacation

Do you want to have a smoother Walt Disney World vacation?  I am sure you do!  Considering Walt Disney World takes up about the size of San Francisco, planning your way around the parks is a must!  Even frequent Disney travelers like myself need to do a bit of planning.  Even if you don’t use a hard core Touring Plan, or plan every meal down to the sprinkles on your Disney cupcakes during the 3 o’clock parade, some planning is necessary.  So today I am going to share Ten Planning Tips to a Smoother Walt Disney World Vacation!

  • Rent a stroller from Kingdom Strollers, or bring your own.  The Walt Disney World strollers are bulky, uncomfortable, and annoying to others.   I know that getting a stroller on and off the Disney transportation can have its challenges.  But, the Disney Parks strollers are very cumbersome and it costs about the same to rent a comfortable stroller, that moves well along the park with a nice sunshade.  Plus, they will deliver to you!
  • Study the Disney Park maps before you visit.  If you have not visited the parks before, or find that you are fairly unfamiliar with a specific park, the maps can be very helpful.  It can be a waste of time to go from Space Mountain to Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom-when you could enjoy either more attractions in Tomorrowland or Frontierland before moving on.  Much time and frustration occur when you find yourself criss crossing the park, and you’ll miss out on attractions right there in front of you.
  • Schedule your FastPass Plus for early in the day.  When the third one is used, or the time has expired on it, you can start getting another one.  Try to time them for about two hours or so apart.  This allows you time to enjoy the other attractions in that immediate area, as well as make it to the next FPP.  The FastPass Plus kiosks are, for the most part, where the old FastPass machines were in the parks.  Very easy to find and CastMembers there are always happy to help!
  • Keep your family together.  Do not, I repeat do not, send one parent ahead in line while you take the little one to the potty or park the stroller.  This has become such a common thing at Walt Disney World lately. It is rude to others, and just doesn’t make any sense.  Everyone can wait in line together.  There really is no advantage to sending someone ahead, and expecting the others who are being polite, to be understanding when you cut in front of all of them to get to the rest of your family.
  • Use the My Disney Experience App when you are in the parks.  It is so nice!  I prefer the web version when I am planning from home.  But in the parks, the MDE App works well. Wait times  are accurate, you can change/make ADRs from it, change your FPP, and all your reservation details are at your fingertips.
  • Invest in an external charger for your phone.  This is the best thing my husband and I packed for Disney.  We were able to keep our phones charged in the parks.  This allowed us social media opportunities, picture taking, and using the MDE App.  It was so awesome!
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get from one place to another.  Depending on crowds, park attendance, etc., Disney buses may be a bit sparse.  You need to allow that wait time in your plans.  It’s a good idea to allow yourself 90 minutes of travel time when traveling to a Dining Reservation or to the park.
  • Stay on Disney Property.  At Disney, time is of the essence.  Staying on property allows you access to Extra Magic Hours, continuous transportation, and FastPass Plus pre selections really help manage your time well and take advantage of the perks on Disney property.  Even the value resorts are comparable to the nightly rate at off site hotels.
  • Allow yourself 5 or 6 days at Walt Disney World.  When you are at Walt Disney World, there is so much to do!  Plan yourself 5 or 6 days, with only 4 or 5 days of park tickets.  That gives you a down day to enjoy your resort, the Downtown Disney area, or even miniature golf.  Being in the parks every day all day is exhausting-and the magic is lost quickly!  Take your time, and enjoy yourself.
  • Plan on an afternoon break from the parks.  For some families, the recommended break time is about three hours.  I know that seems like a lot of time-but remember, there is waiting for the bus, travel time, walking to your room, and then actually resting.  So that is about right.  Even if you are a family with older children-or just two adults-a resort rest is a must for any fun and magical Disney trip.

Festival of the Lion King Returns

“Festival of the Lion King,” is a popular musical stage show that has been around since 1998. It will debut at the brand-new Harambe Theatre in the Africa section of the park on June 1.

In case you haven’t seen it,  the show tells the tale of Disney’s “The Lion King” through acrobatics, dance, music and puppetry. You can see the show everyday in the park. It is offered at various times throughout the day.

If you haven’t seen this show yet, I would suggest seeing it at least once!

Have you seen the show? If so what is your favorite part?

Disney’s Maleficent World Premiere

The World Premiere Of Disney's "Maleficent"

Disney’s Maleficent Movie Premiere at the El Capitan theatre, was an event full of stars and fan fare.  While Angelina Jolie and her co-stars were walking the red carpet, I was up the street at the media preview.   I was excited to see how Disney would portray their biggest villain and spin her side of the famous story of Sleeping Beauty known to all.

The movie opens with a young child fairy with beautiful wings enjoying herself in the forest.  Surrounded by unusual looking “friends”  Maleficent appears happy and loved by all in the forest kingdom, until a chance meeting with a young man named Stefan, caught stealing from the Moors, results in a friendship and eventual romance.    All appears fine until the King of the Human Kingdom declares war on the forest kingdom and places a price on Maleficent’s head.     Stefan goes to warn Maleficent of the danger and instead betrays her, resulting in a catastrophic edge of your seat scene.   Maleficent, heart broken and out for revenge, takes her anger out on the newborn Aurora, placing the famous curse upon her and turning both the forest and human world upside down.

After being cursed, Aurora is taken deep into the forest by the 3 fairies in the hopes, Maleficent’s curse can be prevented.   Aurora enjoys many years of happiness in the forest and  a strong and unique bond develops between Aurora and Maleficent during this time.  But in true Disney magic, on the night before her 16th birthday, Aurora, finds out the truth about her family and heads to the Castle, only to have the curse become a reality and place Aurora into her deep sleep we are all familiar with from Sleeping Beauty tales.

The fight to save the kingdoms and the realization that Aurora is the key to peace between the kingdoms, finds Maleficent struggling against her heart of stone which seems to be softening with each passing scene.    The kiss of true love and subsequent happily ever after scenes at the end of the movie, sent this story spinning into a whole new dimension.   The trailers and hype had me believing I would see Maleficent in all her evilness, but instead the movie gives us the soft and caring side of Maleficent.   The movie takes us into the youth of the evil and sinister villain, and with the potential to create an even bigger following for this Disney villain, it instead weakens her and takes away from the Maleficent we all love and fear.

Although not a fan of Angelina Jolie, she was the perfect Maleficent.   Ella Fanning as the innocent, Aurora was also great as were the rest of the actors in their roles.   The special effects used to make Maleficent fly were beyond spectacular, as were the battle scenes , especially the final battle between King Stefan and Maleficent.    King Stefan’s betrayal and continuing battle to destroy Maleficent is downplayed causing the revenge felt by Maleficent to be diminished.    I am curious to see where this film will end  up in Disney history.   Love it or dislike it, it will be in theatres, Friday, May 30th, go see Disney’s Maleficent and share your thoughts and comments below.

Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. “Maleficent” is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Michael Vieira, Don Hahn, Palak Patel, Matt Smith and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.

I am the Entertainment Writer for Chip and Co and look forward to sharing my reviews with you.   Check out the interview with Angelina Jolie about her thoughts on playing Maleficent.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Coaster is Officially Open at Disney World

Seven Dwarfs Mine train Offical opening
Seven Dwarfs Mine train Offical opening

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Opening

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which is described as a playful and musical family-style coaster. The ride that take guests through the timeless story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, has officially opened at Magic Kingdom just in time for the summer crowds at Disney World.

Joined by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida and Orlando Magic players Victor Oladipo and Tobias Harris, Magic Kingdom vice president Phil Holmes welcomed park guests as the first riders to experience the newest attraction at Walt Disney World Resort.

Actually if you were there for the 24 hour event you know that many people got to ride it before opening day.

This family style coaster now completes the New Fantasyland, which is the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a rocking, rollicking coaster that immerses guests in the lovable world of Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey. Inspired by the classic Disney animated film classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the attraction sends riders on a playful musical adventure into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.”

Featuring an innovative, first-of-its-kind ride system, guests boarding the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train pivot back and forth during twists, turns, hills and drops. Guests are transported through magical mountain scenery and a glowing mine with scenes of the Dwarfs and frolicking forest creatures.

Music from the film classic accompanies the journey. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train features spectacular Audio-Animatronics – with cars slowing down so guests can spot favorite characters making an appearance in different scenes.

At ride’s end, the cottage of the Dwarfs, replicated from the film to exacting detail by Walt Disney Imagineers, comes into view with a dancing Snow White visible through a window.

I was told the Evil Queen/Old lady at the end of the ride trying to get into the cottage, was the same one used in the old Snow White ride.

So you can not get your Fastpasses for the Mine Train ride!

Starbucks Green Mermaid Makes Her Downtown Disney Debut

DTD Marketplace Starbucks
Downtown Disney’s Marketplace Walk Up Starbucks

If you have ever been shopping at Downtown Disney after a long day in the parks, you have likely wondered where the nearest caffeination station was. If you’re like me you probably settled for a subpar cup of coffee from an eatery like Earl of Sandwich or Ghiradelli (great sandwiches/ice cream, coffee-not so good). I am so thankful to report that this is no longer your only option – the green mermaid has now made her first home at Downtown Disney! Thanks to a grand expansion happening across Downtown Disney, you can now order Starbucks frappes, mochas, lattes, macchiatos, and frappachinos to your heart’s content.

Nestled between entrances to World of Disney (the pirate/water squirting Stitch side and the Princess/Bibbity Bobbity Boutique side), this new walk up Starbucks location is perfect for Marketplace visitors. Thanks to well trained and friendly employees, the lines at this location move quickly and every drink i’ve ordered has come out perfectly. The walk up Starbucks has two queues – making for great crowd control and fast service. Perhaps the best part of this new location is their vast array of breakfast options, sandwiches, salads, and pastries! The additions here (menu pictured within the photo gallery) will be a welcome change for those of us who love the other Downtown Disney food options, but hate their lines.

I asked a friendly cast member about the relationship between Disney/Starbucks/Disney Dining Plan and here’s what I learned. Unlike the Starbucks locations within EPCOT and Magic Kingdom, this Starbucks is not directly (or indirectly) owned or managed by Disney. Because of this they do not accept the Disney Dining Plan, but they DO honor all the great Starbucks perks we have come to know and love. They accept rewards (like the free drink you get on your birthday) and your purchases earn you stars on your gold card.

If you’re a big Starbucks fan like I am, you will be twice as excited to know that there is going to be a second Starbucks within Downtown Disney opening soon! The second location is where the Haagen Dazs/Wetzels Pretzels used to be (near the Aerophile Hot Air Balloon Ride) and will have cafe seating and a grass roof (how cute is that?). Thanks to these two locations, coffee will never be more than a Pleasure Island bridge away.

Are you a Starbucks fan? Do you think this was a good addition to the Marketplace or will you miss looking into those World of Disney windows? What Downtown Disney addition are you most looking forward to? I know there’s a long list to choose from!

Courtney is the owner of Mouse to Your House and is always shopping for the latest and greatest finds at Walt Disney World. She hails from Pennsylvania and decided to move to Orlando after graduating form Penn State to be closer to all things Disney. She lives just 4 minutes from Cinderella’s Castle and can usually be found on the People Mover or Spaceship Earth when she isn’t shopping.

Behind the Scenes Cast Members “Rock” their Creativity to Deliver 24 Hours of Disney Magic

Rock your Disney Side ears
Rock your Disney Side ears

Rock your Disney Side Ears

It is not easy to pull a rockin’ 24 hours at a Disney park. It took countless hours, creativity and collaboration from Cast Members who delivered an all-nighter of magic and fun for guests. An event like this takes a lot of planning and I don’t think Cast members get the recognition they deserve at times.

What a better way to kick off summer travel season during Memorial Day weekend, than a Disney Parks created a bi-coastal, amazing celebration with theme parks in Florida and California remaining open for 24 hours.

Teams in entertainment, food and beverage, special events and merchandise developed a smorgasbord of unique experiences for the occasion. Featuring a star-studded lineup of Disney heroes and villains, specialty offerings included an exclusive Maleficent cupcake, which was my favorite, meet and greet opportunities for rarely spotted characters and a Disney villains takeover of the ever-popular “Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It!” Street Party.

“The summer kickoff is one of the highlights of the year,” said Christina Frommling, who is the Disney pastry chef behind the Maleficent cupcake. “As Cast Members, it is exciting to dream up these ideas and then make these special offerings and magical moments come to life exclusively for 24 hours.”

Did you attend this event? I did and I hope they do it again next year!
