10 Fun Things to do for Dad at the Walt Disney World Resort

real men

Disney isn’t just about little girls and Princess dresses. Walt Disney World Resort salutes dads every day with some Dad friendly activities sure to get him out of the “man cave” and into some Disney fun.

Walt Disney created Disneyland as a place for moms and dads to enjoy with their children and this idea extends to all of the Disney theme parks today, including Walt Disney World Resort. Here’s some manly options to make dad feel like a king on his next Disney vacation:

Wild Africa Trek: This VIP African expedition is just right for the dad with an adventurous spirit, and there’s no passport required. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom dad can explore exotic African wildlife in their natural habitat on a privately guided journey through a savannah. Wild Africa Trek also invites trekkers to a serene, savannah-view overlook while enjoying African-inspired food and beverage. Wild Africa Trek is $189 to $249 per person, plus tax  (prices subject to change). Please note this tour requires a separate admission ticket to Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park.

Guided Fishing Excursion: Whether a seasoned sportsman or an amateur angler, there’s nothing more relaxing than fishing at sunrise on Bay Lake with spectacular views of the Magic Kingdom.  Dads can reel in the fun with an unforgettable two- or four-hour, catch-and-release fishing trip that includes a private guide and all the fishing supplies.  Call 407-939-2277.

World-Class Spas Aren’t Just for Mom:  To soothe and unwind after a day at the theme parks, treat dad to some spaaaaaaaah time. With two newly re-imagined full-service spas, dad can rejuvenate and recharge with a variety of treatments including sports massage, reflexology, custom firm, or a Swedish massage. Call 407-939-7727.

Golfing Galore: An active dad is a happy dad.  While the family enjoys the theme parks, dad can hit the links with three 18-hole championship courses, or a 9-hole walking course.  There’s even Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf with one course that resembles a traditional golf course but built on a miniature scale. This challenging skills course offers sand traps, bunkers, water hazards and sloping greens.

Richard Petty Driving Experience: Does dad feel the need for speed? Does he dream about driving a Ferrari or Lamborghini? At Richard Petty Driving Experience he can get a dose of adrenaline behind the wheel of an exotic sports car, or a real NASCAR race car at Walt Disney World Speedway.  Cheer along dad while he lives out his dream of being a NASCAR driver on this mile-long, tri-oval racetrack. Call 407-WDW-PLAY.

Food Lover’s Paradise: With hundreds of eateries at Disney there’s everything from casual to gourmet to satisfy dad’s appetite. From fresh seasonal dishes at California Grill and first-rate oak-fired beef at Yachtsman Steakhouse, to a nostalgic meal in a 50s-style drive-in at Sci-Fi Dine In, the sky is the limit. And if dad is a foodie, there’s a culinary extravaganza featuring celebrity chefs, wine tasting, craft beers and savory samplings during the annual Epcot International Food and Wine Festival Sept. 19-Nov. 10, 2014.

ESPN Club: Dad doesn’t have to miss watching his favorite team or that big playoff game while on vacation.  ESPN Club at Disney’s BoardWalk Resort is the ultimate sports bar featuring 100 big screens, interactive games, dozens of beers, plus nachos, fries and ESPN Wings.

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex: Head to the ballpark with dear dad and catch the Atlanta Braves during a spring training game. Or, hit the pitch to watch the Orlando City Soccer Club take on its USL-PRO rivals. The Lions head to the MLS in 2015. This 220-acre complex – a place for both pro and amateur athletics — features more than 170 annual events.

Splitsville Luxury Lanes:  Take dad out to a night of good old fashioned bowling in a retro, vintage-style venue at Downtown Disney. This trendy, two-level location features 30 lanes, plus live entertainment, a balcony bar, and a variety of dining options with all dads favorites like filet sliders, pizza and even sushi.

Sosa Cigars: This fifth generation premium cigar store showcases the art of hand-rolling cigars. An authentic, solid cedar humidor room keeps the stogies fresh for a primo smoking experience. Treat dad to more than 80 brands of cigars including Auturo Fuente, Padron, Imerio Cubano, and Guente Guente Opus XE.

There’s an adventure for dad in every corner of the Vacation Kingdom.

Wishing you Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust

Disney’s Magical Express: The Most Magical Transportation to and from Orlando International Airport

me 2
me 2

DME

Magical Express has been one of my most favorite things about staying on property.  I no longer have to shell out money for a cab, or wait for my luggage at the carousel.  It also is great for those of us who do not want to have to rent a car.

The process is easy. Anyone staying at an Official Walt Disney World Hotel ( Meaning any resort owned and operated by Disney. For example: Pop Century, Port Orleans Riverside, Beach Club etc.) is eligible. Simply call and add your flight details to the reservation . From there, you will receive a booklet with your baggage tags in. Your magic bands will serve as your boarding pass for the coach. When you arrive at the airport to go to Orlando, simply attach the bright yellow baggage tag to your suite case before you check it. Proceed at usual to your gate. When you arrive in Orlando, follow the signs to the Magical Express Welcome Center. One member of your party will need to present your magic band

to be scanned. You will then proceed as usual to the line that corresponds to your resort. From there, you will board your coach as usual. If you have any carry on’s, chose not to participate in the luggage service,  are arriving from outside the United States, or arrive after 10 p.m. you will need to collect your luggage and give them to the driver to put under the bus. When you arrive at your hotel, he will retrieve them for you. If you are participating in the return magical express, you will receive a voucher the morning before check out with a time you need to be at the bus for. I highly recommend also participating in the airline check in desk at your hotel to save time and to give your luggage so that you won’t need to deal with it until you arrive at your home airport. If you are departing to a destination outside the United States, or the said check in desk is close, you will have to check in at the airport.

Here are my tips for maximizing your magical express experience:

Always put valuables, medications, and at least a few outfits in your carry on bag as you will not get your luggage until later in the day, as well as for safety and security reasons.

If you accidentally pack your magic bands in your checked luggage, don’t worry! Simply stand in line and check in that way.Remember, most buses make multiple stops. Make sure you pay attention and get off at the right resort. It is only available to those arriving at Orlando International Airport.

Lastly, enjoy the movies.  They will get you excited about your vacation, and at the end, help relive the memories!

There May be a “Frozen” Coronation Coming Soon!

Royal Coronation

Royal Coronation

Hiya! I am back with some big gossip that I have been hearing around the “Frozen” Disney grapevine. There have been some subtle hints here and there that Disney is preparing for another royal coronation. Remember when Cinderella’s Castle was being re-painted with the Silver color? Yep that was a sign! Remember when Anna and Elsa were moved to Princess Fairytale Hall? Yep that was a sign!

Ever since then people have been speculating that there will soon be a “Frozen” coronation. Just recently I was told that there are some strong rumors floating around that the coronation will take place on September 24th, 2014. How awesome would that be? I know I am ready for some Icy fun at the Magic Kingdom, aren’t you?

Remember this is not official, yet!

Anywho, that is all the Disney gossip I have right now. For my past gossip articles be sure to check them out here. Got any good gossip/rumors please email me at [email protected] or on my facebook page

Disney Dining at the bluezoo in Disney’s Swan & Dolphin Resort

P1160846

Bluezoo

I had the pleasure of dining at Todd English’s bluezoo at Disney’s Swan & Dolphin Resort when I was at Disney for the 24 hour event a few weeks ago, not really knowing much about the restaurant after walking under this sign, who knew that I would be experiencing one of the best meals of my life…

P1160862

While not Disney themed at all Todd English’s bluezoo is upscale dining at it’s finest. For me this was a welcome break from all the people and all the Disney decorations at the Walt Disney World Resort Restaurants.

bazooka joe

The night started with 2 drinks the Zooberry and the Bazooka Joe. The Zooberry was refreshing but the Bazooka Joe blew me out of the water! I felt like I was reminiscing my childhood in that drink. For those who have a little age to them you might remember Bazooka Joe bubble gum. Todd English was able to take that bubblegum flavor and infuse it with vodka then turn it into liquid magic. Seriously I was blown away by this drink and even if I am not eating at the bluezoo I am going to come in and have a Bazooka Joe!

popcorn

Next I had popcorn ice cream with a shaved white chocolate truffle. Yes you read that correctly Pop Corn Ice Cream. Never in my life have I had a more flavorful ice cream. You would have swore I was at the movies with this starter.

appraisers

Next appetizer was a down home Shrimp & Grits with okra. To me this is Southern Food at it’s finest. The Shrimp were so huge and flavorful I could have eaten a whole plate of them. I don’t think I will ever eat Shrimp and Grits again as not to spoil the memory of these.

raw bar

For my entree I opted for the raw bar. Oysters, Clams, lobster, shrimp and more. When ordering I noticed on the menu it tells you where they get their seafood shipped in from. To me that puts an extra touch of class knowing where my food comes from. I was fortunate enough to see North Carolina, my home state on the menu. Each piece of seafood was perfection. The tuna tartar was probably the best I ever had, even the ceviche had the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. So far Todd English is batting a 1000. Can he continue this streak into dessert?

P1160888

They did! I ordered the Truffles that were made by executive pastry chef Laurent Branlard, a two-time World Pastry Champion, which were so full of flavor I kinda over did it. Each truffle had it’s own unique flavor and I couldn’t stop eating them. They went perfectly with this dessert wine that our server recommended.

P1160887

Sweet, not over powering and the perfect accompaniment for my dessert.

Overall the meal was the best I ever had in my entire life. I have eaten fine dining before and Todd English’s bluezooblew them out of the water. Our server was so helpful suggesting what goes best with each dish, her attention to detail was most welcomed as this was my first experience here. By the crowds in the restaurant I think the secret is out that the bluezoo is the place to visit.

Dolphin

For you parents did you know that the Swan & Dolphin has a kid care center which is free if you are dining at the Swan & Dolphin Resorts. All you have to do is bring your receipt and it is covered. So now you have no excuse not to dine at the bluezoo.

The food will dance off your tongue and awaken taste buds you never thought you had.

I give Todd English’s bluezoo an A+!

Which Walt Disney World Moderate Resort Is Right For You?

POFQ Alligators
POFQ Alligators

POFQ Alligators

When it comes to picking which Walt Disney World Resort to stay at, the options are endless – and can be overwhelming! They come in three “sizes” – Value, Moderate, and Deluxe, and as the names suggest, the perks (and pricetag!) goes up with each level. Many families find that the Moderate Resorts are a great choice for them – not too expensive, with great theming and bigger rooms and more on-site amenities than the Value Resorts – these are a great choice for a lot of reasons! So which Moderate Resort is right for you? Read on to find out!

Port Orleans French Quarter – The New Orleans/Mardi Gras theme here gives the Resort a festive, lively atmosphere – complete with giant masks and instrument playing alligators! Despite the “party-ish” theme, the Resort is charming and romantic – its smaller than other WDW Resorts, and the cobblestone streets, beautiful buildings and courtyards are the perfect things to admire on a sunset stroll. The rooms come with two queen or a king bed and were recently remodeled. The transportation to other parts of WDW is mostly by bus – but there is a boat shuttle to Downtown Disney which makes for a great little trip down the Sassagoula River. The Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is the Resort’s counter service eatery – and they offer some delicious French Quarter specialties – like gumbo, po’boy sandwiches, and the infamous beignets.

Port Orleans Riverside – Down the river from the French Quarter you will find this large Mississippi bayou-themed Resort, where the rooms and atmosphere are more rustic and laid back. There are some special rooms here – the Royal Rooms are perfect for your little Disney Princes and Princesses. The dining options here include Riverside Mill (the counter service food court style option) which features a giant working water wheel, and Boatwright’s – the Resort’s sit down restaurant, which serves up Cajun themed specialties nightly. The option for boat transportation to Downtown Disney is available here too, as well as bus transportation to all the Parks. Taking a stroll around the grounds here is a relaxing, enjoyable experience – it’s a big place, so there’s a lot to check out along the way!

Caribbean Beach Resort – If you are looking to integrate a tropical paradise into your WDW vacation then this is definitely the place for you! The colorful buildings that house the rooms are grouped into 6 “villages”: Barbados, Martinique, Aruba, Jamaica, Trinidad North, and Trinidad South. Surrounding the villages are palm trees and beautiful white sand beaches – which sadly you aren’t allowed to swim at, but luckily there are 9 pools including one with a waterslide that will be a hit with kids and adults alike, as are the available “pirate” themed rooms (complete with Pirate ship beds!). You can rent bikes, boats, and go out on fishing expeditions here too – and once you are hungry from all that, you can head to the Market Street food court to refuel with some delicious salads, sandwiches, pizza and pasta. Or take in a more relaxing sit down meal at Shutters at Old Port Royale – where tropical drinks and Caribbean inspired dishes await.

Coronado Springs Resort – The American Southwest/Northern Mexico theme is carried throughout this Resort, from the Casitas (little houses) to the fountains and courtyards. The Resort is considered a “Convention Resort” – which means they have a ballroom and business center, as well as a junior ballroom available for business groups, and they are also the only Moderate Resort that has a fitness club/spa on property. The Resort itself is so big that they have an internal transportation system where golf carts take you to the various villages within the Resort (great for those far away rooms!). Grab a quick bite at the Pepper Market – where you can get burritos and other Mexican fare (like margaritas!), or head over to Maya Grill for a sit down meal of Tex-Mex favorites

Fort Wilderness Cabins – this may seem like a strange addition to the Moderate Resort lineup, but it’s a great option for larger parties or those with kids who don’t want to be confined to a regular Resort room. The cabins sleep up to 6, and come complete with a kitchen and dining area (including basic cookware/cutlery), and food staples are available at the trading posts within the campground – or you can bring your own food if you want. This is a great way to save money on dining, and the homey atmosphere is nice for families. The Campground itself offers a lot of activities – bike rentals, pools, play areas, horseback riding, boat rentals, and golf cart rentals too. The transportation options include bus, and a boat launch to the Magic Kingdom.

These Resorts are all great in their own ways – their theming and rooms and activities mean they are all unique and one of them just might be the perfect fit for your family! I personally favor Port Orleans French Quarter – but I would love to know YOUR thoughts – are any of these Resorts your go-to?

Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is Still Number One

No surprise here! I am sure most of us addicts already know that the Magic Kingdom here in Orlando is number one, and in my mind it always will be. Even with the price increases, there was a 6% increase to 18.6 million visitors a year.

Tokyo Disney had the biggest increase, with a 15.9% increase pushing Tokyo Disneyland past the original Disneyland into second place worldwide, with 17.2 million visitors in 2013. The Anaheim park did increase some to 1.5 percent, as Tokyo DisneySea jumped 11.3 percent while still holding in 4th place.

Epcot moved up to 5th place worldwide because of a 6.9 percent attendance drop at former 5th holder Disneyland Paris, which dropped to 10.4 million guests last year. Epcot was up 1.5 percent, to 11.2 million visitors.

Take a look at the global Top 10, with 2013 attendance in millions and change from the previous year’s revised number:

  • Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom 18.6 6.0%
  • Tokyo Disneyland 17.2 15.9%
  • Disneyland 16.2 1.5%
  • Tokyo DisneySea 14.1 11.3%
  • Epcot 11.2 1.5%
  • Disneyland Paris 10.4 -6.9%
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom 10.2 2.0%
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios 10.1 2.0%
  • Universal Studios Japan 10.1 4.1%
  • Disney California Adventure 8.5 9.5%

The Top 10 theme parks in the United States, where average attendance grew 2.7 percent in 2013 for the Top 20 parks:

  • Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom 18.6 6.0%
  • Disneyland 16.2 1.5%
  • Epcot 11.2 1.5%
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom 10.2 2.0%
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios 10.1 2.0%
  • Disney California Adventure 8.5 9.5%
  • Islands of Adventure 8.1 2.0%
  • Universal Studios Florida 7.1 14.0%
  • Universal Studios Hollywood 6.1 4.0%
  • SeaWorld Orlando 5.1 -5.0%
  • Universal Studios Florida was the big winner in 2013, with Transformers and Springfield propelling the Orlando park to a 14% increase in attendance. With The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Diagon Alley opening later this month, Universal Studios Florida might very well have the biggest gains in 2014, as well.

“Frozen” Forces Walt Disney World to Change ‘Rope Drop’ Procedure

Frozen

Well, it’s no secret that Disney’s blockbuster animated film ‘Frozen’ is one of the most popular Disney movies of all time. The runaway success of the film is now surging theme park spending and strengthening merchandise sales. “Passion for these characters and for the film is so extraordinary.” says Walt Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger.

Even considering their unprecedented popularity, no one could have predicted the impact it made when the new Anna & Elsa Meet & Greet location was revealed in Disney Parks. Since then, the park attendance has increased, resorts have higher occupancy, shops have made record sales and all due to the “Frozen” craze sweeping the nation. “Who knew, right?”

The new Meet and Greet averages a wait time of over 200 minutes each day, even considering the new FastPass+ option. Every morning promptly after the Rope Drop Ceremony, Disney guests run frantically to Fantasyland as they cut through shops and sprint by strollers in order to be the first in line to see the popular princesses in person at the Princess Fairytale Hall.

In Disney’s desperate efforts to minimize the insanity, shops have now put a limit on “Frozen” merchandise. You are allowed only five identical items per person. Although Disney may limit items available for purchase, this doesn’t hold guests back from racing to be first in line. So with safety in mind guests are now forced to walk slowly along Main Street U.S.A. behind a rope led by Cast Members. Meaning, you can no longer dash your way back to Fantasyland in hopes to be first in line.

It’s obvious that a “Frozen” phenomenon has swept the globe. With summer in full force we’re curious what impact this will make on wait-times? I guess we’ll finally see what ‘Frozen things do in summer’. Are you planning to brave the rope drop or are you playing the 200 minute waiting game this year?
