Remember to Wear Sunscreen at the Disney Parks!

bullfrogsunscreen2
bullfrogsunscreen2

bullfrogsunscreen2

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of 99…remember to wear sunscreen.  If I could offer you only one tip for the future, it would be to wear sunscreen.  The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientist…

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.   So, did I take anyone down memory lane?  I probably just pegged my age for you.  Yes, I’m from a time of boy bands, power bead bracelets, and Dawson’s Creek–and I don’t care who knows!  If you remember these haunting lyrics, then you’ll probably appreciate the solid advice delivered through the cryptic words of Baz Luhrmann even more now, in your—older, wiser age.  Okay, enough with the late 90s, let’s talk Disney; that’s why you’re here after all!  Today we’re talking all things sun protecting and we’re focusing in on the powerful protection bottled in three letters…SPF!  Let’s “cover” a little sun protection to make your time at Disney, simply delightful.

What exactly is Sunscreen?

According to skincancer.org , sunscreens are products combining ingredients to protect you from the suns harmful ultraviolet rays.  These rays include the UVA  (longer ray that causes lasting damage to the skin like damage, skin aging, and skin cancer) and UVB (shorter rays that cause sunburn/damage to skin and can cause skin damage).  Sunscreen protects your skin according to it’s SPF (Sun Protection Factor).  Sunscreen’s come in a wide variety of SPF ranges from minimal like the SPF 2 tanning oils to heavier coverage like SPF 70 found in many sports sunblocks.  Today you can purchase sunscreens that are offers broad-spectrum coverage, meaning it protects from both UVA and UVB Rays.

Do I need to reapply my Sunscreen?

YES!  Sunscreen, even at the higher end of the SPF range need to be reapplied.  No matter if you’re a lotion fan or spray fan, applying and reapplying sunscreen is the most effective way for this type of sun protection to work.  In a very basic sense, here’s how you can determine when to reapply (and no, it’s not when you’re feeling crispy).  According to my research, it takes approximatley 20 minutes for unprotected skin to begin to burn. Applying an SPF, let’s say of 15 will increase that time by a factor of 15 (20 x 15) that means that you’ll be “covered” for 300 minutes.  That may seem like a simple theory to “apply” (forgive me), but it’s not that simple.  Reapplication depends on many factors, including the wear of the sunscreen (like sweating, getting wet, etc.).  Don’t forget to factor in these considerations throughout the day and PACK your own sunscreen (don’t overpay in the parks).

Is Sunscreen the only option for sun protection?

Sunscreen is a good choice for sun protection, but there are lots of other ideas that you can use in combination with sunscreen to lather up on the benefits.  There are so many new technologies in protective clothing that have sun protecting qualities.  Look for clothing items created using a special sun protective textile called UPF (Ultraviolet Protective Factor).  You can find hats, pants, shirts, bathing suits, even accessories like gloves, scarves, and sunglasses.  Protect your whole body from the sun!

What to do if you experience the…BURN?

There are all sorts of remedies out there, but my favorite comes in the form of aloe with pain relief and ibuprofen!  Keeping hydrated and keeping your sore skin moisturized will help.  The best way to get over the burn from too much sun is to AVOID too much sun!  Lather up and keep your skin happy!

Where are the best places in the parks to apply and reapply?

Finding a spot that is out of the line of traffic to do a reapplication of SPF is crucial.  You don’t want to be over spraying onto unsuspecting families, stopping the flow of traffic, or creating a human blockade through some of the best attractions.  Look for spots that are off the beaten path (like the space outside of restrooms, park benches, etc.)  I love the bathroom are near Pirates of the Caribbean, the Tangled Restroom area, the restrooms near the Crossroads of the World at DHS, and the breezeways at Innoventions east and west in EPCOT, just to name a few.  No matter what location you chose, just be mindful of the other guests!

I hope these tips and suggestions will help you to enjoy your times under the sun in the Disney Parks this summer.  Take care of yourself!  It’s really brutal out there, make sure that you take into consideration these preventative tips and you’ll be a happy camper!  So now it’s time to turn before you burn and share out in the comment section below!   Tell us about your sunscreen nightmare.  Did you forget to apply, miss a spot, burn to a crisp, have a sunscreen explosion, or have to overpay in the parks?  Let’s laugh (I mean learn from your experience) about it together!

As always, thanks for reading and commenting!

See ya real soon,

Ashley

Guide to Downtown Disney for First Timers

P1110550
P1110550

dtd

If you’ve never been to Downtown Disney aka Disney Springs, I suggest making it part of your next trip. I like the relaxed pace I adopt there, the chance to see the Disney touches and creativity of outside businesses. Then there’s the variety of shopping and dining – it’s all very low-key, “Disney down time.”

But if you’ve never visited, where do you start? Here are my top suggestions, with alternates, for things to do for a first timer at Downtown Disney.

Downtown Disney Marketplace or West Side

If you’re into Disney collectibles, make sure you stop by The Art of Disney. On display, and for sale, are Disney collector items in 2- and 3-D. Sculptures, prints, cells, figurines, crystal, lithographs. There are straightforward Disney representations, and re-inventions of classic characters and icons by various artists working in different media.

Although it’s waaayyy on the other side of Market Place, D-Street earns my vote for a first-timer visit, especially if you like Vinylmation figures. It’s THE place for Vinylmation, and guests can customize their own figures. The store is filled with Disney details, including a hidden Goofy, and props from the closed-but-not-forgotten Adventurers Club, the interactive Disney experience at Pleasure Island.

Goofy’s Candy Company, DTD Marketplace

goofy

Not just a candy store, this is a candy factory! At Goofy’s Candy Company guests get in on the action and create their own confections. You can customize an apple, rice krispie treats, gingerbread or fudge cookies, marshmallows, or pretzel rods. Or order up a Goofy’s glacier with a customized cup.

And, because it offers such a variety of sugar-rush sweetness, be sure to pick out a back or two to take home. Maybe by creating your own mix of candies.

LEGO Imagination Center, DTD Marketplace

Lego

The LEGO Imagination Center, which just re-opened in DTD after a substantial remodeling and expansion, is a hands-on creative center for LEGOs in addition to a store for LEGO building bricks, kits and related merchandise. There’s an outdoor play area for kids, which includes some racing tracks, and play and design areas inside the store. A new room will offer LEGO classes and house parties.

The new Center now features even more cool LEGO models in addition to its water serpent that emerges from Village Lake and the tourist family. Look for Disney scenes such as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the “Sleeping Beauty” dragon, and Buzz and Woody from “Toy Story.”

Raglan Road, Pleasure Island/Hyperion Wharf or Earl of Sandwich, DTD Marketplace

As DTD is as much a dining destination in its current state as a shopping one, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. And dare I say it? The food at DTD restaurants, especially quick service, is as good if not better than many Disney counterparts.

For table-service, I’m a fan of Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant. Not only does Raglan Road serve Irish Whiskey (they offer both Irish and Protestant brands, yay!) and beer as a proper pub does, but some fine food as well. The soda bread and dipping sauce is a favorite starter, and the menu offers contemporary takes on Irish fare that elevates the dishes. Then there’s the live entertainment, with Irish music and dance that invites diners to join in the fun.

For a first-timer’s quick service option, try Earl of Sandwich. It’s earned a loyal Disney guest following for its fresh food and generous portions for the low prices. And I can personally vouch that it’s chocolate brownies are better than those found Disney counter service. (Extensive taste testing for research purposes, you know.)

World of Disney, DTD Marketplace

World of Disney is the flagship character store for DTD, the one that anchors the area as a destination for Disney merchandise. Inside, you’ll find just a little bit of everything, including t-shirts and other apparel, mugs and food, pins, toys, watches, collectibles. It’s also the home to DTD’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

As with other Disney stores, “look up, look down and look around” is a good rule of thumb for World of Disney and its details. The exterior, for example, features a Stitch icon that squirts water and has many sculptures for photo opportunities, from princesses to pirate skeletons. Inside, guests can check out the famous Disney characters that are on display near the ceiling. And one of my favorite areas in World of Disney is the Villains Room, where watches, jewelry and collectibles are sold.

Recommendations for a First Timer at Downtown Disney?

These are just some of my idiosyncratic choices for a first visit, as compared to Allie’s “To Downtown Disney or Not?” And I’m appalled – appalled, I tell you – at how I left off Cirque du Soleil’s “La Nouba,” DisneyQuest, “Characters in Flight” balloon ride (because of the extra ticket/admission fees), other specialty stores (e.g. Disney’s Days of Christmas store, Magic Masters, etc), and the varied snack and dining options.

Of course, if you’d like to conduct a more extensive exploration of DTD, you might try enjoy “Spending the Day at Downtown Disney.”

What are your recommendations for the Downtown Disney first-time guest? Let us know in the comment box below.

Disney DIY – 4th Of July Fun With Added Disney Flair!

4thjulycastle
4thjulycastle

4thjulycastle

Another holiday is just around the corner – as America prepares to celebrate its independence, people everywhere are rejoicing in the feeling of summer as they prepare to have picnics, host BBQ’s, and watch some fireworks. Walt Disney World doesn’t forget about the holiday either – with special treats and a fireworks show, but if you’re like me and won’t be able to swing a WDW vacation this summer, then why not just bring the Disney magic home with these 4th of July Disney DIY ideas:

mad-hatters-holiday-cupcake-recipe-photo-260x260-clittlefield-00b

Feeling MAD about 4th of July? Then why not whip up some of the Mad Hatter’s 4th of July Teacakes?

You’ll need:

Mad Hatter’s Fourth of July Teacakes Template

Batch of cupcakes baked in blue paper cupcake liners (red or silver papers work well too)

Small red candies (such as M&M’s Minis)

Scissors

Scrapbook paper (red, white, and blue)

Glue dots

Sticker numbers (optional)

Marker

Instructions:

1. Cut off the tops of the cupcakes level with the upper edge of the paper cupcake liners so that they better resemble the flat top of the Mad Hatter’s hat.

2. Frost the trimmed cupcakes and press red candies in place to create stripes.

3. Print the template and use it as a pattern for cutting out a set of brim and hatband pieces for each cupcake from the specified colors of paper. Glue the top brim circle atop the bottom brim circle and then curl the outer edge of the paper slightly with your fingers to give the brim a little more dimension.

4. Now shape the red hatband piece into a ring and secure it with a glue dot. Ideally, the ring should be just wide enough for the bottom of the cupcake to fit into without actually allowing it to rest on the tabletop. This will create the illusion that the hat is taller than it actually is.

5. When you know the ring is the right size, remove it from the cupcake and stick it to the brim using a couple of glue dots.

6. Set the cupcake in place.

7. For the finishing touch, use number stickers or a marker and a small square of white paper to make a 7/4 date tag — tuck the bottom of the tag behind the hatband.

Maybe you’re planning to host this year? Then this Mickey and Friends 4th of July party invite would be perfect!

Even after your party is over – you can capture your favorite memory with this adorable picture frame – it’s easy to make too!

Instructions:
1.Print the frame and decorations on regular paper or cardstock. Cut out the pieces.
2.Decorate the frame using the decorations included on page
3.Use glue or double-sided tape to secure the decorations to the frame. For a 3D effect, use small pieces of rolled tape to secure the decorations.
4.Tape a photo of your best 4th of July memory to the back of the frame.

Check out more family friendly 4th of July Disney crafts here, and above all – have a safe and happy holiday from all of us here at Chip and Co!

Sometimes You Just Have To Stop And Look At The Ducks!

P1110212
P1110212

ducks

ʺMommy! Look at the ducks!ʺ My 3-year-old was tugging at my hand.

We had a late start that morning and there was no way we were going to make it to the park before rope drop. My mom and dad were racing ahead to catch the boat to Hollywood Studios which was just pulling up to the dock. I was torn. I wanted to keep up with my parents but I wanted to honor my daughter’s thrill at seeing the ducks.

Waving wildly at my daughter and I, my parents won.

I tugged gently on my daughter’s hand and said, ʺHoney, we can look later. The friendship boat is here now. We have to catch up with Noni and Papa.ʺ I urged her forward.

She stopped. She let go of my hand. She stamped her little foot and said, ʺBut I just wanted to show you the ducks!ʺ

My daughter won.

I waved at my parents to go ahead without us. (They begrudgingly waited.) And I stopped to look at the ducks.

It is so easy to get caught up in the excitement of Disney World. You saved. You planned. You saved some more. You waited. You counted down to this very moment.

And once you arrive there is a sense of urgency to see and do everything.

But you can’t.

It’s impossible.

When I can’t fall asleep at night I try to figure out how many days you would need to ʺsee and do everythingʺ and I’m asleep before I can come up with a worthy number. Two days for Hollywood Studios. Two days for Animal Kingdom, Three for EPCOT. Three days for Magic Kingdom? No, make that four. But wait. What about Typhoon Lagoon? And what if the boys catch sight of the miniature golf? And there’s always Disney Quest and shopping at Downtown Disney. Disney World is full of things to do and see. It’s the greatest marketing ploy around, creating so much to do you just have to come back.

Walt Disney World is more than just Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Toy Story Mania and Soarin‘. Or eating around World Showcase. Or shopping at Downtown Disney. I admit. I revel in the fact that we can ride 12 attractions, all before noon, when we follow our time-tested plan. It takes that memory of my insistent, demanding, 3-year-old angel to remind me that I may be my own worst enemy, racing through the day.

And so, when everyone is in a rush to catch the next boat or push through a crowd to jump into line, someone in our family will invariably say, ʺHey! Look at the ducks!ʺ It’s our cue to slow down. Savor. Enjoy each moment.

It’s a lesson we’ve carried beyond Walt Disney World.

It’s a lesson that bears repeating.

However many days you have to spend at Walt Disney World, remember, you can’t possibly see and do everything. Take a moment or two or three. Slow down. Stroll down Main Street instead of joining the masses toward Anna and Elsa. People watch while you munch on popcorn. Relax with a parade. Stop and enjoy the JAMMitors in EPCOT. Watch the riders get wet on Splash Mountain. Hold your child’s hand just a little tighter before they’re teenagers and rushing off to Mission Space without you.

The trip will fly by fast enough.

No need to hurry it along.

How to Rent Disney Vacation Club Points with David’s Vacation Club Rentals

daklodgepicture 67998 orig
daklodgepicture 67998 orig

daklodgepicture_67998_orig

Staying in a Deluxe villa is no longer exclusive to members of The Disney Vacation Club (DVC). Let me show you how it is possible to stay in a luxurious villa at one of Disney’s premier resorts without breaking the bank.

Have you ever wanted to stay at one of the DVC resorts but do not own a membership in the club? Do you have a large family or want to keep your extended family close together while on your Disney vacation? Have you tried the family suites at Art of Animation or All Star Music Resort and want to upgrade to one of the deluxe villas for your next trip? Well I am here to tell you how you can book a stay in one of the DVC villas without being a member of the club. Chip and Company has partnered with David’s Vacation Club Rental, a trusted and experienced rental company with years of happy customers to prove their excellence and professionalism. If you have picked the dates for your trip, you can start your rental process by visiting David’s website at www.dvcrequest.com.

David's DVC Rentals

Begin by clicking the tab to the left that says “price calculator.” Click through the calendar until you find your month of travel. Select your arrival date, then click on your departure date. The length of your stay will highlight itself. You can then scroll down to see the prices of the various resorts and room sizes. The price listed is for the entire length of your stay.  You can change the view by clicking the tab to tell you the amount of points needed, or to see the occupancy limitations of each villa type.

David's DVC Rentals Prices

For example, I chose the dates of June 8-14. By selecting the occupancy tab, I can see that for my family of six, we would require a two bedroom villa at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The price for that six-night stay is $2730 in a value 2-bedroom villa. Now that I have selected my resort and room-type I will need to select the tab to the top-left that says, “Rental Process.” This page will give you step-by-step instructions on how to secure a reservation by renting points through David’s Vacation Rentals.

Complete the on-line reservation form (there is a link directly to it on the rental process page of David’s website) including all details of who is in your travel party; which resort and room-type you prefer (it is good to have 2-3 options in case your first choice is not available); the exact dates of travel;  and a partial payment of $98.00 by Visa, MasterCard or PayPal. This deposit will be applied towards your total if David’s is able to secure your reservation. The partial payment is returned to you if your reservation can not be secured. David’s can usually secure reservations within 24 hours if you submit it on a Monday – Thursday, excluding holidays. Once you submit the request form, you will receive an email from David’s with your reservation information or a refund of your deposit if your resort and room choices are not available.

If David’s was able to make your reservation, you will need to complete the reservation payment in-full within 24 hours. You will be able to link your reservation number to your My Disney Experience account online and see your resort confirmation information on the official Disney website.

You can also add a dining plan to your reservation. You will need to call David’s with your credit card number or Disney gift cards in the exact amount of the dining plan you are purchasing. There is a dining plan calculator on David’s website that will give you the exact amount of the plan according to the number of nights you are staying, and the number of adults and children in your travel party. All members of your party must be on the dining plan for the entirety of your stay, per Disney policy.

Boma at AKL is included on the regular dining plan.

Once you have your flight information, David’s can also schedule your Magical Express transportation from Orlando International Airport to your resort upon arrival, and from your resort back to the airport upon departure. All members of your travel party do not have to arrive or depart together, nor do they all have to use Magical Express. Just give David’s all the necessary information when contacting them to schedule your Magical Express.

Magical Express
Magical Express

Ready to start planning your next trip to Walt Disney World? I highly recommend renting DVC points with David’s Vacation Club Rentals. Our last trip for a party of 5 adults and 3 children for 8 nights in September 2013 was smooth-sailing and glitch-free. We rented 317 points through David’s for a two-bedroom savannah-view villa at Animal Kingdom Lodge. It was beautiful, peaceful, and full of Disney Magic! David’s arranged our Magical Express and dining plan purchase. Any questions I had via email were answered quickly and with friendly, courteous professionalism. The rental process was easy; their website was very descriptive and easy-to-use.

So… are you ready to rent DVC points and experience a deluxe Disney resort without breaking the bank? Tell us your plans in the comments section below. Have experience renting with David’s? Tell us about it!

Swan and Dolphin

Guests at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel can toast Independence Day with regionally brewed craft beers, during a “Taproom Takeover” at Cabana Bar and Beach Club, July 2-8. They are partnering with Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing to serve a variety of craft beers on all 8 of their taps throughout the week and add a charitable twist as well.

On July 4, a portion of the proceeds from the brew, Homefront IPA, will be donated to Operation Homefront, which provides services to military families across the nation. Homefront IPA is collaboratively produced by several American microbreweries nationwide, including Cigar City Brewing. Homefront IPA is aged on donated Louisville Slugger maple bats, brewed with donated hops from Puterbaugh Farms in Washington, infused with fresh orange peel and served in donated cans from Crown Holdings, Inc.

Along with Homefront IPA, Cabana Bar and Beach Club will serve these Cigar City Brewing beers throughout the week: Helles Lager, Maduro Brown Ale, Invasion Pale Ale, Jai Lai IPA, Florida Cracker White Ale, Cigar City Cider, Cigar City Apple Pie Cider, Tocobaga Red Ale, Cubano Espresso Brown Ale and Wandering Pelican Black Ale. A selection of Cigar City Brewing beers will also be served at the Dolphin’s Lobby Lounge.
