Which Disney Dining Plan Is Right For Me?

Sandwich Holiday
Sandwich Holiday

Sandwich Holiday

The Disney Dining Plan can really be a time and money saver – and they even have a few different options to suit your family’s needs. But if you aren’t sure which one is right for you, then read on to learn more!

First things first – here’s a quick rundown of what the Disney Dining Plan (or DDP) actually is – It’s a way to pre-pay for some (or all!) of your WDW vacation meals and snacks – if you select it when booking your Resort/Ticket package, you will pay for it at that time as well, and then once you arrive at WDW, you will be able to simply swipe your Key To The World card or your Magic Band to pay for a pre-determined amount of snacks/counter service/table service meals – no cash or credit card needed! The balance of meal credits left on your account appears on each receipt you receive, and it really couldn’t be easier!

Ok so now that I have piqued your interest, let’s figure out which DDP would best suit you and your party:

Quick Service Dining – Two Quick service meals and 1 snack per person for each night of your WDW stay are included with this dining plan. This option is great for families on the go who don’t want to do a lot of table service meals, who would rather grab a fast bite and then hit the Parks! There are plenty of Quick Service restaurants throughout the Parks and Resorts – but a few of my personal favorite places to grab a fast meal are: Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney – delicious sandwiches on freshly baked rolls, plus they have brownie sandwiches for dessert (they’re filled with frosting!), and Sunshine Seasons at Epcot – where they serve up delicious rotisserie chicken, a variety of soups, and some amazing salads too! This plan is probably not the one to pick for first timers visiting WDW – especially if you have young kids – as you may want the option of having some Table Service meals built into your dining plan for character meals, buffets, etc – so read on for more info on that!

Regular Dining – This option includes one table service meal, one counter service meal, and 1 snack for each night of your stay at WDW. This is probably the most popular option, and it is the one my family and I have found the most beneficial for us. My husband I will generally share a counter service meal for breakfast (like the bounty platter that’s served up at most Resort quick service dining locations – it’s plenty big enough for two!), and then share a larger snack or another counter service meal for lunch, and use the table service for dinner. We normally have to end up paying for a few meals out of pocket, but not that many, and if you are able to do some sharing, you can make this work really well too!

Deluxe Dining – If you’re hungry (and to want to try as many Disney restaurants as possible!) then this is the plan for you! 3 meals (can be used either as table service OR quick service meals) and 2 snacks per person for each night of your WDW stay are included on the Deluxe plan – which gives you and your family a great opportunity to mix it up and try some new and unique dining experiences! If you really love buffets or have kids that are super into character meals, then this just might be the plan for you – it gives you the flexibility to use your meal credits as either quick service or table service – so you can really do what you want when it comes to meals – and best of all, they are already paid for since you’re on the DDP! Two snacks a day can come in handy too – especially when you are spending hours and hours on your feet experiencing everything WDW has to offer (which is a LOT, trust me!)

Premium/Platinum Dining – These two plans go beyond just dining – they are an all-encompassing vacation package that includes the WDW Resort accomadations, Theme Park Tickets, the Disney Deluxe Dining plan which offers 3 meals and 2 snacks per day, plus other perks like tickets to special events, spa treatments, reserved fireworks seating, and more! They call these the “Premium” and “Platinum” Dining Plans, but really they are the Deluxe Dining Plan that is included with the Premium and Platinum version of the WDW vacation package. If you’re celebrating something super special (like a honeymoon, anniversary, or anything really!), then you may want to look more into these plans – it’s all that Disney magic, and then some!

disneydiningplansnackcredit

Exactly what is included in a “meal credit” you might be wondering? Well, it’s basically any adult entrée, non-alcoholic beverage, and dessert – and this goes for any table service or quick service meal. The snack credits are a bit trickier to figure out, but generally it includes anything “snack like” that is under about $5 – but luckily these are always notated on menus and bakery cases with the above symbol so it’s easy to tell which items are eligible

Ok so some things to note –

-Not all meals are created equal! Meaning – some restaurants are considered “Signature” dining, and will cost each person 2 Table service credits each, and the same goes for dinner shows as well

-Meals don’t have to be used daily or in any order – meaning, you can use two counter service credits per person in a day, or none in a day and 3 in the next – the total is simply based on the number of nights, so if you stay for 5 nights and use all 5 snacks the first day, then that’s ok, but you won’t get any more credits the next day(s)

-Table service meal credits do NOT include gratuity, or alcohol – so that is something you still will have to budget for

-All Dining plans include one refillable souvenir mug per person – which can be used throughout your stay at your WDW Resort

Even though there are some stipulations and nuances that may make the DDP seem complicated, it really is a convenient way to make your WDW vacation easier, less stressful, and more magical! Check out the official Disney Dining Plan Info here – and hopefully you will find an option that works for you!

Dine at the Alfresco Tasting Terrace at Disney California Adventure

Alfresco Tasting Terrace
Alfresco Tasting Terrace

Alfresco Tasting Terrrace

The Alfresco Tasting Terrace is located on the second floor of the Golden Vine Winery at Disney California Adventure Park. They have small plates of classic Mediterranean favorites complemented by wines from the “Disney Family of Wines,” a collection whose vintners have a personal connection to the Disney name.

The open-air veranda offers signature food items, such as the Fritto Misto (calamari, mussels, green beans and artichoke hearts with pepperoncini aïoli) and the flatbread “two ways,” which features seasonal flavors. Its wine list is the only one at any Disney Resort to feature all eight wineries of the “Disney Family of Wines,” and each of the wines of the collection carries on the Disney legacy, typifying the passion, innovation and quality that the Disney name symbolizes. You can relax while you enjoy the great views of Radiator Springs.

It all sounds yummy!

Disney World is Heading Toward $10 an Hour Starting Pay

P1080788
P1080788

Many big companies are slowly moving toward raising their starting pay, Disney World has joined them! This is huge, it will improve the lives of so many Cast Members who work very hard in the parks to make our vacations magical. Disney also has a huge influence in the business world so hopefully some other companies will follow their lead.

A contract with Disney World’s union group, the Service Trades Council, would raise the minimum hourly pay to $10 in 2016 for more than 23,000 full-time workers if it all goes well next week. It would gradually increase starting this year going from $8.03 to $9. That is higher then Florida’s minimum wage.

“There’s a movement across this country to raise the minimum wage,” said Ed Chambers, the council’s president. “Disney’s just ahead of the curve. They probably anticipate that by that time [2016] it will be the going rate. Why not take a leader position in raising the standards for everybody?

Sea World and Universal raised their minimum starting hourly pay to $9 in June, even though they are not unionized.

By paying more not only will it help the Cast Members live a better life but it will prevent turnover and will help Cast Members focus on customer service.

Part- Timers will not be left out. There is another Disney contract for them in the Service Trades Council that will be negotiated later on. It will also will include the offer of a gradual increase to $10. About half  of Disney’s workforce is represented by this union.

What do you think?

Top Gluten Free Cool Treats at Disney World

MickeyMousebars
MickeyMousebars

When it comes to summertime in Florida, the heat can be brutal – especially when you are touring the Disney parks. Cool treats are the perfect way to cool down in the parks, and as a gluten free guests, you’ll find plenty of gluten free options that will make you feel chilly in no time! Here is a list of some of my favorite gluten free cool treats.

Fruit bars
Frozen fruit bars are a terrific way to cool down while in the parks on a hot day. Served in a variety of flavors, these are a welcome treat. Most common flavors include: Pineapple and Strawberry.

Club Cool

Club Cool
The name just says it all! Disney serves Coca-Cola products at this location in Epcot and most are gluten free. You and your family will delight in trying new and interesting Coca-Cola soda flavors from around the world including the well-known Beverly!

Frozen Lemonade
One of my favorite things is lemonade. Turn it into a frozen treat, and you have one of my favorite ways to cool down in the summer. Disney currently carries Minute Maid brand frozen lemonade throughout the parks & resorts.

Shaved Ice
Disney has a variety of locations that offer shaved ice, including the water parks and the Japan Pavilion in Epcot. Kaki-Gori, found in Epcot, has a variety of flavors that are safe for special dietary needs. Check out flavors like strawberry, cherry, melon, tangerine, or rainbow (a mixture of all three flavors).

KakiGori

Dole Whip
Nothing is more iconic in Disney than a Dole Whip. Guests can easily indulge in this frozen delight and all of the flavors: pineapple, orange, and vanilla are gluten free. But of course, the pineapple is the most popular! If you are vegetarian or vegan, this is a safe option as well.

Ice Cream Sundaes
Did you know that you can get special dietary sundaes at Disney? Sundaes at the Plaza Restaurant or Ice Cream Parlor include lots of toppings, and you can even get a banana split. Beaches n’ Cream offers their version of a sundae complete with peanut butter sauce. Looking for an allergy friendly brownie sundae? Head over to 50’s Prime Time Cafe. Their version is outstanding with a house-made allergy friendly brownie. Most locations carry Edy’s (which has gluten free flavors) as well as Tofutti, Rice Dream, and So Delicious non-dairy ice cream for guests wishing to order these options.

Root beer floats
Like John from the Carousel of Progress, grab yourself a cold sarsaparilla from the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor and other popular Disney restaurant locations. Disney only serves Coca-Cola sodas and uses Barq’s Root Beer for their root beer floats.

MickeyMousebars

Mickey Bar
Mickey Bars may be one of the most iconic Disney World treats. How can you not love something Mickey shaped? Guests report enjoying this item as a gluten free treat; however, do note that in the past Nestle, the company that produces these bars has indicated that cross-contamination for gluten may occur during manufacturing, though any have reported success enjoying these treats.

Always remember to consult with Disney cast members for current product ingredients and cross-contamination procedures. Some pre-packaged items will note this information on the package label.

Are you feeling “Frozen” now? I know I am!

What’s your favorite gluten free cool treat?

Sadly SeaWorld is closing the very popular show “Clyde and Seamore Take Pirate Island”. My daughter and I have enjoyed this show many times when she was younger and we are sad to see it go.

“After 15 years of hilarious hijinks and pinniped pranks, SeaWorld Orlando’s ‘Clyde and Seamore Take Pirate Island’ sails into the sunset,” this statement was made on their website.

The last show will be August 10, 2014.
