Marvel Entertainment and Stomp Out Bullying Team Team up for Anti-Bullying Awareness Program

Stomp out bullying

Marvel Entertainment is enlisting its biggest Super Heroes to bring added awareness of the problems of bullying. This October, Marvel will join forces with STOMP Out Bullying, the leading national bullying and cyberbullying prevention organization for kids and teens in the U.S., to launch a special variant cover program to commemorate National Bullying Prevention Month and support STOMP’s relentless efforts to stop this growing epidemic. Throughout the month of October, the world’s most popular Super Heroes – Captain America, The Avengers, The Guardians of the Galaxy and more — will be featured on all-new variant covers to spotlight both National Bullying Prevention Month and STOMP’s Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention. The  issues will be available exclusively at comic shops.

“The center of Marvel’s storytelling history is the eternal struggle between good and evil, with many of its greatest Super Heroes having to contend with  and rise above bullying, in all its forms,” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics. “We are proud to join forces with STOMP Out Bullying on its important bullying prevention awareness mission. We hope that all our fans take a moment this month to educate themselves on the need to stop bullying among our youth by checking out the free resources STOMP Out Bullying has to offer.”

STOMP Out Bullying focuses on reducing and preventing bullying, cyberbullying, sexting and other digital abuse, educating against homophobia, racism and hatred, decreasing school absenteeism, and deterring violence in schools, online and in communities across the country. It teaches effective solutions on how to respond to all forms of bullying. It educates kids and teens in school and online, provides help for those in need and at risk of suicide, raises awareness, conducts peer mentoring programs in schools, creates and distributes public service announcements by noted celebrities, and engages in social media campaigns. An additional focus educates parents on how to keep their children safe and responsible online.

In 2008, the organization created Blue Shirt Day World Day of Bullying Prevention to signify the importance and bring awareness to the fight to stop bullying and cyberbullying. Taking place the first Monday of October – this year on October 6, 2014 – Blue Shirt Day World Day of Bullying Prevention is designed as a sign of solidarity against bullying by having kids, teens and adults wear blue and make that the day that bullying prevention is heard around the world.

“We are privileged to join forces with Marvel Entertainment on this critically important bullying and cyberbullying prevention campaign,” said Ross Ellis, founder and Chief Executive Officer of STOMP Out Bullying. “Bullying and cyberbullying have reached epidemic proportions, with one out of every four kids being a victim. And bullying transcends race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation; in fact, some of Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes were themselves bullied as kids and teens. But just as Spider-Man, Captain America, and Marvel’s many other Super Heroes were able to triumph and go on to combat evil, so can every one of us be a Super Hero in our own right by standing up and joining the fight to eradicate bullying.”

The following comic books, on-sale in October, will feature special STOMP Out Bullying variant covers:

  • Rocket Raccoon #4

Celebrate Your Birthday At Walt Disney World

Mickey Birthday 762507
Mickey Birthday 762507

Mickey-Birthday-762507

Birthdays are fun to celebrate no matter where you are, but in my opinion there is nowhere better to celebrate than Walt Disney World. Celebrating a birthday at Disney was a dream of mine for years, and last year I was able to do just that. It was so much fun! There are so many special ways to celebrate a birthday at Walt Disney World.

To start your birthday celebration, be sure to pick up a free birthday button from Guest Services. Be sure to wear your button each day throughout your vacation to let cast members and other guests know you’re celebrating. You might be surprised by all of the special attention you’ll receive. Many guests and cast members wished me a happy birthday as I walked past them. The cast member standing outside Columbia Harbour House even sang a cute Happy Birthday song to me!

In addition to your birthday button, be sure to let cast members know of your celebration when booking all of your dining reservations. You never know what special surprises they might add to make your celebration extra magical. Many of the table service restaurants will bring out a birthday cupcake or other dessert to help celebrate. Please keep in mind there is no guarantee you will receive anything free for your celebration, as the cast members are not required to give out birthday freebies.

Disney also offers several special fireworks experiences which would be a great addition to any  birthday celebration. You could enjoy dessert as you take in the stunning fireworks at the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party. Similarly, the new IllumiNations Sparkling Dessert Party at Epcot would also provide a phenomenal birthday celebration as you take in the fireworks and cultures of the World Showcase countries.

If you’d prefer a more unique experience for your celebration, consider watching the Magic Kingdom or Epcot fireworks spectaculars from the water. Disney offers specialty cruises for both Wishes and IllumiNations. The cruises can accommodate up to 8 or 10 guests and also include dining. You can even request a birthday cruise, complete with cake!

Have you celebrated a birthday at Walt Disney World? Let us know your favorite way to  celebrate in the comments below!

So I bet you can guess who is already brewing up some spooky but sweet indulgences for this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary-Halloween Party (MNSSHP). One of my favorite features of MNSSHP is the amazing smell of the ghoulish goodies that fill the air from countless delicious indulgences decking every last inch of the Magic Kingdom’s bakeries, food carts and counters throughout the park, but before you lose your head – make sure that you have tried one of the hot Spiced Pumpkin Waffle Sundaes topped with Cinnamon Sugar Soft Serve from Sleepy Hollow!

Join in the Candy Corn Craze with some Candy Corn Cotton Candy served by various carts throughout the Magic Kingdom, but if it’s ice cream that you’re screaming for, then don’t miss out on your chance to stop by Storybook Treats in Fantasyland for both a Trick and a Treat with some brightly colored Candy Corn Soft Serve Ice Cream served in a cone filled to the brim with candy corn inside.

What better way to catch the Boo to You Halloween Parade or Happy HalloWishes Fireworks Spectacular (both exclusive only to MNSSHP) than with a wickedly sweet treat to bring out your villainous side while you enjoy the show? Creep in for a yummy Mummy or Candy Corn Cupcake offered at the Main Street Bakery on Main Street U.S.A.

Gaston’s Tavern is also getting into the Halloween ‘Spirit’ as they feature a ghoulish Ghost Cupcake served only for this special event, as well as a Wormy Apple Slush topped with a few creepy gummy worms for your grim grinning pleasure.

Big Hero 6 Media Press Day

image002 (1)

The “BIG HERO 6” Media Press Event was recently held at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California.  Arriving at the Animation Building, I met up with my fellow writer and good friend, Robbie and we secured our spots in the viewing room.    A brief introduction by Director, Patrick Osborne and we were treated to the new Disney short “Feast”.  Patrick Osborne shared how he started with the idea of telling a story about food and ran with it ending up with the story of Winston and his owner.  Part of the work including bringing in real puppies for the animators to use as models and having an incredible team to take everything and make the characters come to life.  “Feast” will be released as a short along with “BIG HERO 6”.

Next up were clips from “BIG HERO 6” with commentary by Directors Don Hall, Chris Williams and Producer, Roy Conli.  During the clips we were able to see some of the most important key parts of the story.   Sitting through “never before seen footage” which included rough animation and temporary effects was very interesting as it gave us a glimpse into the making of a film.  Several key scenes including the one where Baymax and Hiro meet and one in which they test fly Baymax’s super suit became instant favorites.

Q&A sessions with various departments provided exclusive insider information and more clips, pictures and opportunities for behind the scene look at the making of “BIG HERO 6”.

Head of Animation Zach Parrish (“Wreck-It Ralph”) and members of his team shared the long hours and hard work that goes into how the characters go from an idea on paper to the actual talking, walking and coming alive on screen.  A new program created in house allowed for the Animators to be able to create, each wrinkle, facial movement and every aspect of how a character is created in new and amazing ways.  The demonstration of the program showed how they take a scene and with clicks of a mouse or keyboard button transform it into something magical.  Just like with the ice castle in “Frozen”, they are able to take the characters and scenes to new heights in the world of Animation.

Head of Effects Michael Kaschalk and Effects Production Supervisor Nathan Curtis talked about how “BIG HERO 6” was one of the most challenging projects to date.  Viewers usually think of visual effects as things like fire, rain, snow, water, etc. but in Disney films, visual effects include “magic” and to create Disney magic, the special effects teams needed to “capture the essence of the character”.   Using a new program they developed called Hyperion, the team was able to create incredible special effects.  Sharing information about the Microbots, which are a big signature effect in the movie, the team shared the extensive research in architecture and structural designing involved to make the Microbots come alive in a variety of forms.  The visual effects in “BIG HERO 6” from the Microbots to the fire-breathing suit worn by Fred and the 7 fight scenes, will once again place Disney is the top spot with visual effects.

Screenwriter Robert Baird and Head of Story Paul Briggs talked about how long it takes to put together a story.  “Story teams are made up of directors, producers, and story people to build a story.”  “BIG HERO 6” “took 4 to 5 years to develop a good story”.   Viewers don’t realize the number of sequences and in turn drawings that go into making a movie.  Discovering how “BIG HERO 6” had over 30 sequences, with one sequence having 1000 drawings gave me an idea of the enormous amount of hard work and time involved.

Production Designer Paul Felix and members of the visual development team shared artistic design choices and all the research that went into the creation of San Fransokyo and the unique character designs of “”BIG HERO 6″.  The idea of combining San Francisco and Toyko was a perfect blend because of the differences in artistic designs in each.  San Francisco has the old Victorian homes and Toyko has the modern architecture (any building over 30 years is considered old and demolished).  “San Fransokyo was born and set in the near future which allowed for people to be people”  and the combination of the two worlds gives it the perfect setting.

Directors Don Hall & Chris Williams and producer Roy Conli talked about the making of “”BIG HERO 6″”.  Conli shared how the studio is in “one of the most vibrant times as they keep pushing each other to make each and every film unique and engaging as is expected from Disney films while exploring new worlds and creating compelling characters we fall in love with”.

“BIG HERO 6” has all the qualities of classic Marvel comics with all the magic of a Disney movie.  The story line, characters and special effects shared by the team during our visit, gave us a glimpse of another big hit for Disney Studios.

Based on Marvel characters, “BIG HERO 6” is the story of Hiro Hamada (voice by Ryan Potter) and his plus-sized inflatable robot (voice by Scott Adsit), who along with their buddies, adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller) join forces to discover the mystery behind the catastrophic event that turns Hiro’s world upside down.  Full of high tech and special effects, lovable characters, incredible fight scenes and my favorites, Microbots, “BIG HERO 6” soars into theatres, November 7, 2014.   Check out a sneak preview HERE!

So You’re Going to Disney World… Building Up the Excitement!!

frame boarder
frame boarder

craft

You just told the (kids, nieces, nephews, grandkids) you’re headed to Disney World – The Most Magical Place on Earth!!! How do you keep up the excitement for the year or months away?? There are a ton of neat ways just by looking at Pinterest that are economical and easy to do with the family. Sometimes the photos and projects that are posted are completely overwhelming and can cause a slight case of “glue gun envy”. Don’t fret!! I am going to help you with step by step mommy friendly instructions to make these and other “countdown/souvenir projects” almost as magical of an experience as the trip itself without breaking the bank.

Being an event planner in my real life I depend greatly on dry-erase boards. They are so easy for layouts, idea jotting and even better they aren’t wasting paper!! One of my favorite projects is the dry erase frames. This frame can be done in princesses, Tink, Pooh or everyone’s favorite, Mickey and Pals (which is what we went with). This is great to have when planning your ADR’s, park visits and reservations as well as keeping quick record of reservation and confirmation numbers.

Up in the NE, New Jersey in particular, we have AC Moore and Michaels. These frames are pretty universal though. Usually they are around 10 dollars, with apps like Retail Me Not, you could get some significant savings! After a quick trip through the papercrafting aisle for some great Disney paper and stickers, you are ready to start your project.

Cut the sheets into 4×6 inserts and add the stickers to the paper, not the glass, and frame. Embellish as you wish and Voila! You have a dry erase planning frame!

They also offer these frames in white which would be perfect for a Princess or Tink theme.

This project was originally found via Pinterest and the best part is to make it your own and they also make an excellent gift for showers, trip announcements and housewarmings.

Stay tuned for other great projects and Mommy/Family friendly Disney tips for packing, crafting and all around home/office decor! Feel free to comment your suggestions! I’d love to hear from you! Granted Wishes & Pixie Dust!

Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Holiday

My girls, Keegan and Fallon with Jack and Sally – October 2013.  Their dresses are half Jack/half Sally and they always receive incredible Disney magic because of their customs.

You cannot miss Halloween at the Disneyland Resort! Especially the Haunted Mansion Holiday event!

One of the best things about Halloween time at Disneyland is the Nightmare Before Chirstmas overlay at the Haunted Mansion.  This is something unique to Disneyland and makes a special visit to the park worthy of all Haunted Mansion enthusiasts.

2014 will be the 14th season of transformation of the Haunted Mansion into Jack and Sally’s world of the Nightmare Before Christmas.  This fun and spooky movie by Tim Burton was released in 1993 and has become a Disney cult classic.  The attraction is shut down briefly during the transformation and will be open in the multi holiday theme (Halloween thru Christmas) from September 12 – January 6, 2015.

There were a lot of new additions and effects added to the Haunted Mansion in 2013.  The sights and smells were even better than ever and this video is a must watch!

Of course the Haunted Mansion itself is amazing to see with the overlay, another exciting part is the character meet and greet with Jack and Sally near the Fast Pass station (which is only used during peak times) outside of the gates!  Jack and Sally are available for pictures with guests from about 9am to 4pm everyday – just find a Haunted Mansion cast member with a schedule to be sure you get in line at the right time to visit them.  When the park is crowded, they sometimes move the meet and greet to New Orleans Square near the shops – so make sure you find a cast member to ask so you don’t miss them!

The yearly Gingerbread House designed for the Haunted Mansion Holiday is another great part of the Disneyland Halloween experience!  This year, the house is based on an Iron Maiden torture device from the middle ages and should be a great addition to the Halloween experience at the parks.  The wooden base is built from the approved design and sent to the Disneyland Resort Central Bakery where it takes 3 weeks to complete and it will be over 7 feet tall!  I can’t wait to see it on our trip this year!

Are you visiting Disneyland this holiday season?  I would love to hear your thoughts on  the Haunted Mansion Holiday!

Top 10 Things to Love About Fall at Walt Disney World

received 10153758567493072
received 10153758567493072

I love fall! The leaves, the smell in the air, the crisp breeze, and pumpkin flavored everything! I especially love fall at Walt Disney World. There is always something to celebrate at the Disney parks, but during autumn there is an extra air of excitement. I’ve created a list of my top 10 things to love about fall at Walt Disney World. Make sure not to miss out on these seasonal favorites!

  • Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party: My favorite event at Disney is MNSSHP! I love how guests, young and old, dress up and really get into the spirit. Hallowishes and the Boo to You parade are some of the best displays on property. Cast Members really get into these parties as well. Many will have special costumes that they wear only for the event and there are Cast Members out who are specifically assigned to play games with guests and to just have fun! There is trick or treating throughout the Magic Kingdom, specialty desserts, event specific merchandise, “rare” character meet and greats, dance parties, and so much more.
  • Epcot Food and Wine Festival: I mean, do I really need to say more? Epcot. Food. Wine. What else do you need? The lines for this event can be quite long, but so worth it. Pick up a Food and Wine Passport and plan which booths you don’t want to miss before heading into the crowds. Don’t be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone. Another tip for finding great food; head to the end of the line where guests have already gotten their food and have started to eat and ask them what they thought!
  • Autumn Decorations: Fall at Magic Kingdom provides some amazing photo opportunities. Scarecrows welcome you into the park and are great additions to a family photo. The pumpkins along Main Street, U.S.A. each feature their own unique design. Take a moment to check them out as you race to the Haunted Mansion.
  • Eat to the Beat Concert Series: Another event at Epcot, sample a unique wine from a nearby stand and enjoy a concert from acts such as Fuel, Jim Brickman, Los Lonely Boys, and David Cook. Past acts have included Hanson, and Sugar Ray. Concerts are included in park admission price.
  • Fall Treats: It’s not just the decorations that get a festive boosts. Loved snacks such as cupcakes, rice crispy treats, and specialty apples are also themed for the fall and Halloween season.
  • The Weather: Yes, I know, this one may be seem a little silly, but trust me, weather is a very important factor to my level of fun. Fall in Florida can be beautiful! The days usually stay around a high seventy or low eighty degrees, the humidity is lowered, and the nights are cool enough for a leisurely stroll through the world showcase.
  • Fall Savings: It’s no coincidence that most of my Disney vacations fall in the month of October. Of course there are all the great reasons I’ve already mentioned to visit during this time, but another huge factor is fall discounts. Guests visiting Walt Disney World this fall can receive up to 30% off select Disney resorts.
  • Villains: There’s nothing better than a Disney Villain and we hear Disney is working on a Disney Villain Stage show for Hollywood Studios.
  • Merchandise: I’m a sucker for a pumpkin with Mickey ears on it. Put out a votive holder, ear hat, t-shirt, pretty much anything and I will be reaching for my credit card. I think that Disney holiday merchandise is a great way to decorate at home for the holidays. Each year when you pull out that souvenir you will remember all the memories you made on that special trip.
  • The Guests: I find myself interacting with other guests the most during fall events at WDW. Maybe I’m just that annoying person who likes to strike up conversations in line for the restroom, but I feel that there is more of an openness between guests during the fall. Asking someone how they liked their wine from the France pavilion, or asking if they have tried the soup at the Canadian pavilion (omg! You have to try it!), or complimenting a family on their unique costumes. It’s a great way to pass the time in lines, get to know people, and pick up a few tips and suggestions along the way.

Any time you visit Disney Parks you are sure to have an amazing time, but take a little extra time during the fall to enjoy all the extra perks and events that take place around the property. What are some of your favorite fall memories from Disney? Let us know in the comments below.

Monica is an Alumni of the Disney College Program. When she is not walking down the middle of Main Street USA you can find her wandering the World Showcase, or enjoying a Dole Whip while racing to her favorite attractions. When she is forced to endure life outside of Walt Disney World, you can find her in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she lives and works.
