Top Animal Kingdom Attractions For First Timers

AKfirstTimeCollage
AKfirstTimeCollage

AKfirstTimeCollage

If you’re planning your first trip to Walt Disney World – may I be the first to say congrats – and that I am oh so jealous of you! You and your family are in for some serious fun – it’s an amazing place to visit with SO MUCH to see and do! So much to see and do in fact that you might not know where to begin with your planning! Well, first off – I highly recommend you try and spend at least a day at each of WDW’s 4 theme parks – and one the animal lovers in your family will really enjoy is Animal Kingdomso make sure you check out these Must Do Animal Kingdom Attractions For First Timers while you’re there:

Kilimanjaro Safaris: Board your touring Jeep and head off on a wild ride through the African savannah! Your driver will be your guide as you navigate the bumpy terrain, pointing out animals and fun facts about them too! There are plenty of animals around – rhinos, hippos, giraffes, antelope, ostriches, elephants, flamingos, cheetahs, lions, warthogs – to name just a few! This ride pretty much defines the park itself – it allows you to see what an amazing space Disney has created for these animals, and it is a great ride for the whole family (everyone loves seeing the animals, no matter what age!)

Expedition Everest: The yeti is the ‘protector’ of the mountain that you are about to explore – and he isn’t exactly a welcoming host! You’ll board your train that will take you on a wild ride through Mount Everest, and while waiting to board, be sure to check out all the details in the queue – history of the yeti, information about the ficticious Himalayan Escapes Touring Company that is your guide through the exploration, and more! This ride is a roller coaster – you will experience high drops, fast turns, and you even get to go backwards! Being faced with the yeti can be scary for little ones, but overall it’s a really fun ride that is unique and really well themed

Kali River Rapids: CAUTION – you WILL get wet on this turbulent raft ride down the Chakranadi River and a jungle that’s in jeopardy because of illegal logging. The queue for this one is all outdoors, and is a long one – but you’ll notice a lot of great details as you weave your way toward the raft boarding area. You’re in for waterfalls and plenty of twists and turns on this one – and I recommend you bring some Ziploc baggies for your camera, phone, wallet and other valuables – as they will get wet (and so will you!)

Dinosaur: DinoLand USA is where you will find the “Dino Institute” – where you’ll weave through a queue full of fun fossils and dinosaur facts before heading into the Briefing Room – where you’re prepped for your ride into the past! You then board your all-terrain jeep and head back to the Cretaceous period – and a jungle full of dinosaurs! Dinosaurs of every shape and size appear everywhere, then meteors threaten your trip and turn it into a race back to the present! This is a very jerky ride – there are no drops but the term “all terrain” definitely reigns true here (and you’re wearing a seat belt for a reason). But who can pass up the chance to get up close and personal with the dinosaurs? I know I can’t – I love this ride and the queue is especially fun – it’s like walking through a museum!

Adventurers Outpost: No trip to a Disney Park would be complete without a little character meet and greet, would it? Head here for a chance to meet with one of the world’s most famous couples – Mickey and Minnie! They are all decked out in their safari gear, and are ready for hugs, autographs, and photo ops. Check out the mementos they have collected from around the world while you wait

I recommend heading to Animal Kingdom right when it opens in the morning and taking in these attractions before the lines get too long – plus it can get HOT there in the afternoons, so morning touring usually works out best here.

I also previously wrote about the “can’t miss” attractions at the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios for first time WDW visitors, and I think that this list of Animal Kingdom attractions will really give your family a well-rounded experience with a healthy dose of Disney Magic too! But I would love to know YOUR thoughts – what Animal Kingdom attractions would YOU recommend for a first time visitor to Walt Disney World?

Stay tuned right here on Chip and Co – where next week I will talk about the can’t miss attractions at Epcot!

Disney bans smoking in all Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar movies

smoke

Disney’s annual shareholder meeting was full of surprising announcements.   From the news of Frozen 2 to the first “official” gay Marvel character, Disney news have been exploding all over the social media pages.

The latest announcement is from CEO Bob Iger.  Responding to an investor’s question, Mr. Iger stated that he will “absolutely prohibit” showing any characters smoking in Disney films that have a PG-13 or below rating. Unless like in the case of “Saving Mr. Banks”  they involve an historical figure who smoked and would need to be part of the character.

Although he said Disney doesn’t get involved in MPAA ratings nor try to influence other studios’ policies, Mr. Iger felt for Disney it was just the right thing to do.   With the amount of influence Disney has on fans of all ages, I believe this is will have a huge impact.  Disney movies are always magical and usually happily ever after.  The need to include smoking as a character trait, is not necessary to make the movie successful in this Entertainment Writer’s opinion.   Kudos to Bob Iger and Disney’s decision to set a good, healthy example.

Disney’s Live Action Movie, Cinderella coming to theatres on March 13, 2015, tells the story we all know and love.  At a recent press event, I had the pleasure of meeting several VIPs including Director, Kenneth Branagh, Chris Weitz (Writer), Allison Shearmur & David Barron(Producers) and  Sandy Powell (Costume Designer).

Director, Kenneth Branagh started the session talking about how it was a big and exciting surprise to be a part of re-telling the story of Cinderella. The biggest surprise was how emotional the movie was.   Asked when he knew Lily was Cinderella, Branagh said the decision was made pretty early although it is never easy.  The characteristics they were looking for in the person playing Cinderella was generosity of spirit, lightness of touch, lovely voice and sense of fun of the absurd and Lily had all that.  After 6 or 7 auditions, he knew and it was a lovely phone call to make (to Lily).    In reference to the film, Ken said they wanted an “immersive experience, something where you were able to taste and smell and feel the whole thing” “Romantic and full blooded” and a lot of planning within the key departments. Cinderella sees the whole world “as it could be not necessarily as it is”. In discussing Cate Blanchett, he said in previewing the film many liked the ending where Cinderella forgave Lady Tremaine and  a small percentage wanted to see Lady Tremaine in the streets being punished. Lady Tremaine created strong feelings and Cate was not afraid of that and even in the scene where Lady Tremaine shares her broken heart, Cate did not play for sympathy. Windsor Park was the location of the scene in forest with trees that were over 600 – 650 years old and they had special permission of the Queen to film. The most difficult part to film was the ball. However, the dance, the music and shooting them, was a remarkable day and everyone cast and crew felt that day was truly magical. In comparing, the live action and original animated film, Mr. Branagh talked about how it felt to bring a fresh look in to Cinderella. Saying there was a sense of the film makers being in on the beginning of something different and new and it was exciting. I asked if there would be a sequel, perhaps what happens next?  Mr. Branagh said I was the first to ask and his response was a simple “who knows”, perhaps Cinderella punching Lady Tremaine in the nose,  giving me hope that perhaps the sequel will give us the closure with Lady Tremaine

Writer, Chris Weitz and Producers, Allison Shearmur & David Barron came in next. Chris Weitz confirmed that this version was based on the Disney version in a respectful and loving way.  Weitz said people remembered the animated version and wanted to ensure the concept was kept.   David Barron confirmed it was such a rewarding experience to be a part of this movie.  When asked what was it about the movie that attracted everyone to be a part of the movie to which Allison Shearmur, simply said “Cinderella”.  Both Weitz and Barron also stated it was a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to pull off such a project.    Regarding the phrase “have courage and be strong”, they were asked their thoughts about the phrase which is so encouraging.  Barron talked about how it would be incredible to pull off a movie that celebrates courage and kindness.    Cate Blanchett portrayed an incredible Lady Tremaine and Weitz shared how they wanted her to be a strong character.   Showing the character as a result of what happens when women don’t work together or help each other was a point Cate Blanchett wanted to make with Lady Tremaine.   The plot twist at the end was a favorite and it was important to have the key people in the scene so they incorporated the deception.   Asked what happens at the end to Lady Tremaine, Allison Shearmur commented that she is a survivor.   Again the subject of a sequel was brought up with perhaps the focus on Lady Tremaine and although there is nothing in the works, if the audience demands it they will be happy to provide.

Sandy Powell (Costume Designer) was the last one to share her experience working on Cinderella.  Her inspiration came from the original film and then she put it aside and just went forward. She did take the concept of setting it in 1940s era and then she just moved forward from there. Colors and fabric were the first step and then design. In discussing the beautiful blue dress, there was no requirements as to the color, but now in hindsight it had to be blue.   For Ella, the intention was to keep her simple. The butterfly motif was also a key feature based on Ella’s affection for nature.   The male costumes were also made elegant but kept on the simple side. The magical slipper shape was developed in glass to accent the lighting while the blue ball gown  took 500 man hours to complete. Working with a great team, Sandy Powell was able to bring an incredible array of magical costuming to Cinderella.

Don’t miss Cinderella in theates, March 13, 2015.

Beverly Hills’ Beautiful Montage Hotel was the location for the Live Action Cinderella Press Event.   In attendance were Lily James (“Cinderella”) and Richard Madden (“Prince”).

Lily James started out the sessions looking beautiful.   Lily talked about the opportunity to play Cinderella being terrifying.  She talked about how upon finding out she got the part her emotions went from overwhelming excitement that quickly turned into fear and pressure.  She said “everyone has their own picture of what she is like in their own imagination.”  In reference to the dress and dance scene Lily shared how she literally had a “nervous breakdown” because although she and Richard Madden had rehearsed the dance for months, once the gown was on it was completely different. With 8 to 12 layers and the fact that it would rip every time Richard touched it, the whole dance scene had to be adjusted.   Richard wound up sliding instead of dancing which was hard.    Asked if there was a special moment when Lily realized she was Cinderella, to which Lily said it was probably when Ken (Director) called and offered Lily the part, but there were other moments, putting on the  gown, on the swing in the garden also come to mind.    The use of animals was brought up and Lily explained that at the screen test, Kenneth Branagh actually gave her 3 real live mice which added to the nervousness.   In working with Cate Blanchett, Lily raved about how she surpassed every expectation Lily had, in that Cate was alot of fun, and very encouraging.  As for what Cate brought to the part of Lady Tremaine, Lily said that it was instrumental in helping her because Cate made it easy by bringing in so much history to the character.   The six weeks of the film where Lily worked with Cate and the step sisters was so much fun.   The emotional scenes, especially the  moment with the branch and Ella’s father were part of the Charles Perrault version.   The young Ella scenes were profound and Lily found them very moving.  The Q & A had to include a question about the transformation of Ella, to which Lily shared how the fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) had lighting on her dress and both dresses were huge so it was a very funny to just wave to each other from a distance.    My question was about the magic of sitting in the carriage.   Lily’s excitement could be felt in her response when she talked about how beautiful it was and how exciting it felt to not only get into the carriage but to ride into the passage to the  gate.   She did mention it crashed during one of the takes.    Lily ended the session talking about her first time meeting the prince in the forest.  It had a sort of sensual feeling and gave them the connection you see on screen.  Lily said how it felt like a very special moment and was fun to film.

Richard Madden (Prince Kit) was next and after a moment of silence as he walked in, he started right in sharing how it was a joy to  play the Prince, “it was magical”.   Compared to the animation, Richard loved the fact that he was projected as a son and a soldier and someone worthy of her affections.   He talked about the old fashioned belief of the prince rescuing the damsel in distress and that doesn’t work as well now so instead, they rescue each other and that makes for a more relevant message.    Richard’s version of the meeting between Ella and Prince in the forest, he was concerned he would mess things up and get fired.   Full of emotions, and having not worked together yet, it made for a nervous scene.   The dance scene was long and hard in that Richard felt he was not a gifted dancer so he just wanted to make sure he focused on the acting and not destroying the dress.  Ironically, it was Richard’s least favorite scene and probably will be the fan favorite.   On the subject of the relationship between Richard and Derek Jacobi (King) although they had not met, it was inspiring to work with him.   Richard said it was terrifying as this was his first big film and playing a character everyone had a preconception about – add a multimillion dollar film and the confidence was not high, but went on to praise Director, Kenneth Branagh.   Asked about his connection to Disney movies, Richard said it was very special, because as a kid he and his sisters watched Disney movies and he learned all about love, death and so much from Disney movies.    Asked about his next role, Richard shared that he will be back on stage in London in 2016 in “Romeo and Juliet with Lily and Ken”. However he is a “sci-fi geek” and would love to do something on a spaceship.    The best experience was waltzing with his mom when they came to the set.  My question was how did Richard feel with the costumes.   Richard said he talked about wanting something regal but masculine.  The sequins and glitter on the jacket was not a hit with him at first sight, but once on it was the perfect look.   He feels they were able to maintain the masculinity and keep with the story line.    In his final question, Richard is asked about the surprise part when Richard reveals himself to all at Cinderella’s house to which Richard mentioned that the Prince was not a stay at the palace and wait for things he was a going to do everything he could.    Richard ended the interview saying he was very lucky this was his job.

Star Wars Movie Surprises Continue

The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Shareholder’s Meeting was full of surprises this morning.  First there was the news that a Frozen sequel is coming and now more Star Wars.

Fans will be happy to know that Bob Iger announced the first standalone Star Wars movie, which will be released in December 2016.   The movie titled Star Wars: Rogue One will star Felicity Jones and will have Gareth Edwards in charge. Filming begins in London during the summer and that means, I might just need to reschedule my European vacation to coincide with the film dates and locations.   Wouldn’t it be great to meet and interview Felicity Jones?

Iger also shared the release date for the highly anticipated but still untitled, Star Wars:  Episode VIII which will be in theatres, May 26, 2017.   This new information gives Disney Addicts three consecutive years of Star Wars movies to enjoy.

Renowned Disney Architect Passes Away

Disney building dwarfs

Michael Graves passed away at the age of 80 in Princeton N.J. He had been paralyzed from the chest down from a spinal cord infection in 2003. In case you have not heard of him, he is the amazing architect whose style you can see on the Team Disney building where it looks like the dwarfs are holding it up, as well as some Disney theme park hotels.

He also designed the Swan and Dolphin resorts. It is was supposed to look like an art deco New York building, his 1989 Disney Hotel New York at Disneyland Paris was more subtle. But wait there is more, he also designed many other prominent hotels, universities, residences, buildings, and he worked with Target.

Former Disney president Michael Eisner once said of him: “Michael Graves is an architect for whom design has no boundaries. There is no such thing as an insignificant object.”

He had an amazing life and was a great talent!

Our condolences go out to the family.

Wookieepedia Turns 10

694px star wars logosvg
694px star wars logosvg

Star Wars logo

We wanted to let you know about the 10-year anniversary of Wookieepedia, a chronicle of all-things “Star Wars” launched through Wikia, which was this past Wednesday, March 4. Designed as a Star Wars community aggregator, the wiki-style site features official and fan-generated content —blogs, in-depth Star Wars lore, exclusive images and videos.

The site has been wildly popular, and with this turning out to be “The Year of Star Wars,” Wikia is doing some really exciting things, including a Qwizards contest in conjunction with Lucasfilm at Star Wars Celebration (April 16-19).

At the event Wikia superfans will play a special live anniversary edition of Wikia’s Qwizards game show, testing their saga knowledge against Leland Chee, the Lucasfilm Story Group’s “Keeper of the Holocron.” I’d love to work with you on a story that looks at the 10-year history of Wookieepedia and reports on the multi-pronged approach Wikia has put in place to commemorate the event.

Wookieepedia currently boasts over 2000 contributors and over 117K pages of content, which sees continuous growth year over year. This year, Wikia will build on how it engages with Wookieepedia’s passionate fans through:

  • The development of an interactive timeline that annotates important real world Star Wars moments against Wookieepedia moments; fans will be able to add points to this at any time
  • “Predict the Madness,” Wikia’s predictive bracket counterpart to “This is Madness,” the StarWars.com character tournament. As of March 6, logged in Wikia users will be given a week to submit their own online bracket predicting the outcome of each matchup in the StarWars.com tournament. At the end of “This is Madness,” all of the submitted brackets will be compared against each other, and whoever has the best predictive skills will win the contest – with prizing provided by SMS Audio
  • “Master the Madness” — a Star Wars Character Trivia Challenge – will also run March 26-April 1 as a part of this program

At this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Wikia will have a large footprint, including a presence on the show floor representing 12 Star Wars communities and close to 7 million Star Wars fans across multiple countries; support of the fan props/sets on display through the use of interactive museum plaque-style signage that pulls relevant info from the appropriate Wookieepedia article page; and hosting a special Star Wars Celebration edition of its Qwizards game show, attended by Leland Chee, the famous “Keeper of the Star Wars Holocron”
