Disney Quick Tip- Should I Bring Sunscreen?

Sunscreen
Sunscreen

ss

As a mom, I’m always trying to keep my family safe, and bringing sunscreen on our trips to Walt Disney World is a must, no matter what time of year we go. The Florida sun is much stronger than the sun I am used to in Pennsylvania, and keeping my skin and my family’s skin safe is a top priority.  There’s nothing worse than getting burnt the first day of your trip and being in pain and miserable.  So, it’s definitely wise to bring sunscreen home and I would recommend bringing at least SPF 20.  Not only will you save money, since it’s expensive to buy once you are on the property, but you will also have a much more enjoyable time not worrying about whether you are getting burnt or not!  And don’t let the clouds fool you…you are just as likely to get burnt on cloudy days as you are on sunny days.

So definitely make sure you pack your favorite sunscreen in your luggage!  Some other handy things to pack to keep yourself comfortable on your trip are:

  • moisture wicking socks and moleskin- your feet will get hot and sweaty…let’s try to avoid those dreaded blisters!
  • a hat- goes hand in hand with sunscreen to keep you shaded and cooler
  • small backpack- to keep your park essentials in one place
  • personal handheld fan with spray mister attached- these work wonders in the summer and are the perfect way to cool off quick.
  • poncho- pop up storms happen all the time in Florida, so be prepared with a poncho

Never fear, if you do forget to bring something with you, essentials are able to be found at the resort shops and throughout the parks.  What are some of your must brings to Disney?

Planning trips for families is one of my favorite things to do.  Let me help bring the magic to your family.  Email me at [email protected] to receive a free quote and to start planning your magical adventure.  And be sure to follow me on Facebook to keep up with all things Disney!

Tomorrowland Challenge

The Walt Disney Studios along with XPRIZE and Disney Citizenship challenge young innovators nationwide.  Inspired by the upcoming Disney movie “Tomorrowland,” beginning April 22, 2015, kids aged 8 to 17 are invited to imagine themselves in the future and report back through stories, imagery or video about a new invention or innovation they find – how it works and what impact it would have on the future.

Six winners will be chosen in June for a once in a lifetime mentor-ship opportunity with a leader in their area of interest and also receive a $3,000 check, a 3D Printer from 3D Systems, and paid registration for FIRST® LEGO® League for the competition season 2015-2016 in the U.S.

“‘Tomorrowland’ has always been a place of possibility in our parks and for the creative team behind our new film,” said Sean Bailey, President, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. “The future will be steered by the imaginations of our young people, and Disney is thrilled to work with XPRIZE to encourage and inspire the next generation of thinkers and dreamers to build the future they imagine is possible.”

The challenge is divided into two groups:  Junior Division (8-12 years old), and Senior Division (13–17 years old).

Follow the link XPRIZEchallenge.org/CreateTomorrowland for the Official Rules and details about the Challenge and don’t forget to have an adult sign the permission forms.  Official registration and submission period starts April 22, 2015, and runs through May 17, 2015.

A panel of judges will evaluate and score all the submissions based on innovation, presentation and creativity and will chose six (6) winners.

Did you know there are three on property hotels at Disneyland?  Even though they are not classified as Value, Moderate and Deluxe, like Walt Disney World Hotels, you can separate by pricing tiers (lowest to highest) starting with Paradise Pier, followed by The Disneyland Hotel and finally The Grand Californian.  Each one has amazing Disney magic sprinkled throughout, gorgeous swimming pools and easy access to both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure.  There is nothing like being able to WALK from your hotel into each park and between parks with your park hopper pass all day long!  Disney has just released some new deals for spring and early summer that you need to take advantage of TODAY!

Guests planning a spring or early summer trip to the Disneyland Resort are invited to take advantage of a new hotel offer. For reservations made at any Disneyland Resort Hotel between March 25 and May 7, guests will save 20 percent on premium rooms and 15 percent on standard rooms, on select nights from April 5 through June 16. The savings, combined with all the benefits of staying at a Disneyland Resort property, make this an ideal time to plan a vacation at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Whether for business or leisure, any visit to the Disneyland Resort is enhanced with a stay at a Disneyland Resort Hotel. The Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel each have their own distinctive style, and all three offer the same great benefits exclusive to hotel guests.

The Disney difference: Disney Cast Members are known worldwide for their personalized service and are available 24 hours a day for the convenience of hotel guests. In addition, each hotel is uniquely themed to immerse guests in Disney stories even after they’ve left the parks.

Great locations: All three hotels are conveniently located near Disneyland park, Disney California Adventure park and the Downtown Disney District.

Key to the Magic: Hotel guests may easily charge meals and merchandise to their rooms using Key to the Magic cards. As an added convenience, items purchased in the resort can be sent directly to a guest’s hotel room through the Merchandise Delivery service.

Extra Magic Hour: Hotel guests are invited to enjoy select attractions in either Disneyland park or Disney California Adventure park one hour before park opening each day of their stay.

Exclusive Entrance: All hotel guests may enter Disney California Adventure park through an entrance available only to hotel guests in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Valid theme park admission is required.

Dining: Character breakfasts are available at each hotel – Chip ‘n Dale Critter Breakfast at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel, and Surf’s Up! Breakfast with Mickey and Friends at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. In addition, each hotel has a variety of dining options, from small bites to upscale fare.

Recreation: Guests are invited to enjoy the pools and saunas at all three Disneyland Resort Hotels, embark on a power walk around Disney California Adventure before park opening, or participate in interactive fun, including Learn to Draw Mickey Class and Disney’s Princess Story Time. (Activities are subject to change.)

Pixar Studios and Cars and Incredible Fans of all ages are in for a treat.  Pixar has just announced the addition of Cars 3 and The Incredibles 2 to their list of sequels.   Announced at the Shareholder’s March 18th meeting, Disney executives shared the titles but little else in details about the plots, release dates or other information at this time

While the new sequels are still in the early stages, the much anticipated “Finding Dory” is coming to theatres next year.   The sequel to “Finding Nemo” one of my favorite Pixar movies, has Dory trying to find her family.

Top 10 Healthy Meals in Disney World

top 10 healthy
top 10 healthy

top 10 healthy meals

Are you looking forward to a trip at Disney but dreading the sight of Dole Whips and turkey legs because it’s not included in your diet? Have no fear. Many of us equate a vacation with decadent eating and indulgence. While there are unlimited options of that nature in Walt Disney World it should bring some comfort in knowing there are also many healthy options! Disney is known for accommodating its guests in any way possible and the menus are no exception. Regardless of the reason for your restrictions, there are delicious choices for you around every corner…literally. Here are my Top 10 Healthy Meals found in Disney World Resort Orlando.

1. Slow- Cooked Chicken Curry over rice

Head to Tamu Tamu found in Africa in Animal Kingdom, this quick eats stop serves up a delicious tender chicken with curry sauce over a bed of Jasmine rice. If you are in the mood for something moderately spicy (a matter of taste) and find yourself in Animal Kingdom this is a great option. If you are a “no spicy food” person, this probably isn’t the best choice for you.

2. Vegetable Pizza

Pizzafari in Animal Kingdom delivers on taste! There are times on vacation that it will be time for kids to have their veggies! What better way to get kids enticed than on a pizza? Personal sized pizzas with a side salad is nice alternative to a burger and fries, a typical kid choice.

3. Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese Salad

If you’re in Epcot and you want to enjoy a simple, vegetarian friendly and light salad, try Sunshine Seasons! They have many options, but we have to focus on the favorites! The goat cheese and beet salad is topped with a honey sherry dressing. Is it just me or is everything better with goat cheese? Bonus to this dining experience- the decor is a really cool mix of fun and funky. It’s like modern meets the 1970s! I always look forward to seeing those season themed hot air balloons.

4. Spicy Tuna or California Roll

My confession is that I prefer non-raw sushi. I would take a California roll to a salmon roll any day. However, the place to go in the World Showcase for amazing sushi (cooked or raw) is Katsura Grill in Japan. The very quiet and ambient quick service is a great place to calm your mind from the busy day and indulge in some delicacies that won’t kill your calorie count for the day. You have only several options so you won’t be overwhelmed if you’re new to sushi, which was what scared me the most when I first tried it.

5. Fruit Smoothie

Auntie Gravity’s in Tomorrowland, Magic Kingdom. A smoothie can serve as a wonderful snack choice from your meal plan. Refreshing, filled with real fruit and keeping you hydrated, a smoothie from Auntie Gravity’s is a perfect choice for a mid-afternoon cool down. Flavors include orange, strawberry-banana and raspberry.

6. Grilled salmon with Cous Cous and Broccoli

Found at Columbia Harbor house in Liberty Square, Magic Kingdom. The best way to grab up some protein to keep yourself energized for your likely very long day is fish! Packed with nutrients and low on calories this meal is not only delicious, but you won’t leave feeling as weighed down as you would with a beef or heavy pasta selection. You don’t have to sacrifice taste for health! This meal is also quick service so you’ll be in and back out to the attractions in no time.

7. Southwest Salad

I’ve heard many mixed reviews of Pecos Bills Tall Tale Inn and Café in Frontierland, Magic Kingdom which saddens me. I will always be a fan because it reminds me of my first trip to Disney at 9 years old. I love the décor and how being inside feels like you are outside in a Mexican village during a fiesta under the stars. I also love a good tex-mex meal! The Southwest salad, however, is my favorite healthy dining choice. Mixed Greens, chicken, Monterey jack cheese, tomato, roasted corn, jalapenos, and chipotle ranch. Ask for your dressing on the side and if you don’t like spicy, hold the jalapenos!

8. Asian Salad- topped with chicken or salmon

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios the ABC Commissary has a great “Old Hollywood” eatery feel. You can dine like a producer from the golden era of film in art deco surroundings. Specializing in international flare, the commissary offers many delicious choices for salads. They are tossed to order as you look on. My favorite healthy choice for this quick service would be chicken with edamame beans. They make this salad! I’d also toss in some carrots and other assorted veggies, but edamame is a must. Packed with protein, the chicken and beans together will set you up for the energy to ride the Rockin’ Roller Coaster over and over again!

9. Vegetarian Black Bean Burger

Disney World is known for accommodating everyone in any way possible. There are many wonderful options that are not only nutritious but also vegetarian. This “burger” is served with cheese and onion straws on a bun. You can cut the calories but ordering it bun-less or even having them hold the onion straws. No matter how you have it, this burger is well worth a try! Found in Hollywood Studios at Rosie’s All-American Café you can have this delight while the rest of your party can choose a cheeseburger if they like. Everyone wins!

10. Veggie Sandwich with Soup

We can’t forget Downtown Disney!  There are tons of great food choices here but in my travels I’ve found that Earl of Sandwich is a fan favorite. Their Veggie Sandwich fits perfectly into this list of healthy eats. This is a mix of Swiss cheese, roasted zucchini, cabbage, avocado, lettuce, tomato and pesto hummus served hot. The flavors will melt together in your mouth like a symphony of flawless taste. There is also a soup choice available that will vary daily.

Menus and pricing are always subject to change, but many of these restaurants have multiple healthy choices on the menu at any given time.
