As the largest expansion in Downtown Disney history continues, several new dining and shopping locations are opening as the area continues its transformation into Disney Springs.

The lively shopping, dining and entertainment destination will treat guests by day and night to a one-of-a-kind Disney experience amid beautiful open-air promenades, flowing springs and waterfront charm. The Landing is the first of four neighborhoods to open — home to unique shopping locations and memorable dining experiences such as The BOATHOUSE, Morimoto Asia and STK.

The new offerings are part of an expansion that – when Disney Springs is fully completed in 2016 — will double the number of shopping, dining and entertainment venues from the current 70 to nearly 150.

Exciting new dining coming to Downtown Disney includes:

  • The BOATHOUSE An incredible culinary experience will be showcased in an expansive restaurant with nautical-themed rooms, two private dining rooms for special events, and three distinctive bars. Guests will enjoy a gourmet menu with steaks, chops, seafood and a raw bar, served until 2 a.m. daily. This upscale, waterfront dining experience will immerse guests both on land and on water. There’s live music, plus guided tours aboard a 40-foot Italian Water Taxi and Amiphicar rides that launch from land, enter the water and take guests on a 20-minute tour of the landmarks of Disney Springs. The BOATHOUSE is the latest project of Schussler Creative, the creators of Rainforest Café, T-Rex and Yak & Yeti at the Walt Disney World Resort. It will be managed by award-winning Gibsons Restaurant Group, internationally renowned for exceptional food and extraordinary service. Opening fall 2015.
  • Morimoto Asia Chef Masaharu Morimoto, known for his appearances on Iron Chef America, is opening a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Morimoto Asia will be the Japanese master chef’s first pan-Asian restaurant, providing flavors from across Asia with unique exhibition kitchens showcasing the continent’s traditions. Included among them are street-food stalls, Peking duck carving and dim sum. Designed by STUDIO V Architecture, Morimoto Asia’s extraordinary, 36-foot tall, two-story layout will include open terraces, grand halls, private rooms, a cocktail lounge, waterside seating and more. Morimoto Asia is expected to open in The Landing at Disney Springs in Summer 2015.
  • STK– The ONE Group Hospitality, Inc., known for developing upscale, high-energy restaurants, is opening STK, a modern steakhouse mixed with the ambiance of a sleek lounge and emphasizing a social and fun environment.  The vibrant, lively scene will offer guests fine dining, signature cocktails, and a DJ playing eclectic music nightly. It will be one of the largest STK locations in the world, occupying 14,000 square feet in a two-story building, including a main level and the only rooftop dining venue in Disney Springs. STK is expected to open in The Landing at Disney Springs in 2015.

New shopping open now at Downtown Disney includes:

  • The Art of Shaving– A boutique retail offering that sells high-end shaving supplies and related grooming products for the modern man. Founded by a husband and wife in a Manhattan apartment, The Art of Shaving has grown to a worldwide organization that is still nurtured by the founders’ talents and passion. Guests can receive expert shaving advice on products and techniques, or make an appointment for a luxurious grooming experience at the Barber Spa.
  • Apex by Sunglass HutA first-of-its-kind sunglass store that was built with the athlete in mind. This retail location showcases the industry’s best selection of sport performance and lifestyle eyewear including Oakley, Ray-Ban, and Under Armour. In order for guests to choose a lens to best suit their needs, Apex has developed environmental simulators so guests can test out how a specific lens will perform under a variety of light conditions.
  • Chapel Hats – A fashion forward shop that specializes in an assortment of hats for guests of all ages.  The location carries stylish hats including fedoras, cowboy hats, floppy hats, outdoors hats, kid’s hats and more. • Havaianas – A Brazilian-based shoe store that offers fashionable flip flops made with the highest quality rubber — with hundreds of styles to choose from. This store will feature a large assortment of colorful Havaianas for women, men and children, plus kids’ rain boots. • Sanuk– Innovative, fun and comfortable footwear with more than 175 designs is available at this 1,000-square-foot venue. Taking its name from the Thai word for “fun,” Sanuk strives to make more innovative products that are as much about funk as they are about function. Mulan Joins The List Of Disney’s Upcoming Live Action Movies

Walt Disney Studios appears to be getting ready to add Mulan to their growing list of Live Action movies based on animated favorites.    With the request for a script of the heroine, Hua Mulan, from 1998’s animated feature film, Mulan, Disney plans to continue giving fans a whole new take on some of the older Disney favorites.    With the release of Cinderella which debuted at #1 at the box office and several other live action films in various stages of production, Disney is going to dominate the theatres.   Although Disney has not given out any information on the newest project, Mulan will be just as beautiful and full of attention to detail as all Disney films.   I can’t imagine what else Disney has up their sleeves, as the choices are endless.

Along with Cinderella, Disney is working on Alice in Wonderland and the Jungle Book for 2016, Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson in the role of Belle, coming in 2017 and under the direction of Tim Burton, my family’s favorite – Dumbo – as my granddaughter said “Disney is gonna have to use all their Magic to make a real elephant fly”.

Audra McDonald
The upcoming Live Action Beauty and the Beast Movie still has a few roles to cast before beginning production in May at the Shepperton Studios in London.  I am happy to share that Broadway actress Audra McDonald is in talks with Disney, for the role of the singing wardrobe, Garderobe (french definition of the word, wardrobe).

If she is chosen, she will join Emma Watson (Belle), Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston) and Josh Gad (Le Fou).    In the original Disney movie, the wardrobe meets Belle when she is locked up in the Castle.  I am looking forward to seeing all the different characters come to life, since director Bill Condon has commented that the live action film will be based on the 1991 animated classic full of lively and favorite characters.

Audra McDonald who has already won six Tonys, would be an ideal addition to the film, adding her experience and talent as a Broadway veteran to what is sure to be another Disney hit.

Disney Studios have taken the classics and come up with incredible live action movies as shown with the recent release of Cinderella.  Also in the various stages of production and preparation are The Jungle Book, Dumbo, Pete’s Dragon to name a few.

Howdy cruisers!!  Did you hear that guests sailing on the Disney Cruise Line can take advantage of the onboard offer WITHOUT selection an actual sail date?!?!  How cool is this??  The new placeholder offer is a great addition to the booking process and allows you to pick the best getaway for you, especially if you don’t have your calendar handy.

The new placeholder process will allow you to book the onboard offer without booking a specific sail date reservation.  Your confirmation will only include a confirmation number, but, not details of the cruise- including ship name, sail date, or category.  Once you decide on the best sail date, you can reference this confirmation number when you modify the booking.  This is such a great way to take advantage of a special offer on one of the amazing, award-winning Disney Cruise Line ships!

Previous policies still stand for the onboard offers, including the number of bookings allowed and the need to complete travel within 24 months from the date the reservation is booked.

I love this feature and I think it will get a lot more cruisers going back on repeat cruises.  The flexibility of knowing that you can lock in great rates and pick the date that is best for you is a win-win.  Once you book your onboard offer, I’d love to help you create some amazing cruise plans.  Email me at [email protected] and together we can make your next cruise the most magical one yet!

Disney cancels partnership with Coca-Cola, signs agreement with Pepsi.

Thank you everyone for being good sports and participating in our April Fool’s Joke for 2015!

The Coca-Cola Company is a longtime sponsor and drink supplier at the Disney World and Disneyland theme parks. It has been present since Disneyland’s opening day of July 17, 1955. Today we have received word that Disney will be canceling that partnership and instead offering Pepsi products at all Disney theme parks starting July 4th, 2015, to coincide with the 50th Birthday of Pepsi!

Frito-Lay which is owned by Pepsi is available at all Disney theme parks and it makes logical sense to extend their previous contract agreement with Pepsi to include soft drinks as well.

We have only been given limited details on the changes coming to the parks over the next few months but I am sure there will be an official release posted today April 1st.

Enjoy crowd-pleasing American classics like hot dogs, sourdough chili bowls, soft pretzels, desserts, and Pepsi fountain drinks.

Over the next few months, Disney Addicts will see Coke signs coming down from all theme parks and replaced with Pepsi signage. As we get more details we will post them.

Is a Star Wars Live Action Show Finally a Reality?

starwars

Star Wars Fans have been following the rumors of a Live Action Star Wars  TV Show for years.  New rumors have come out recently saying that the project is still high on the list of Disney upcoming projects.  Are they waiting for the release on December 18, 2015 of Star Wars Episode VII:  The Force Awakens to be the “force” needed to finally jump start this project?  Although no production dates or other information is available at this time, there is speculation, that it is on hold waiting for a time slot to open between the filming of the upcoming Star Wars films.  This would allow Disney to use some of the same props and sets and film at the Pinewood Studios in England.

As a huge fan of Star Wars and Disney, I can’t wait for confirmation of the TV show.  However, we know that Disney always has a plan to make sure we get the best shows and finding the right time to go forward with the live action TV show for Star Wars is something Disney Studios does best.  In the end the wait will surely be worth the addition of another top notch show to the Star Wars saga.

Top 10 Attractions We Miss Most in Disney World

maelstrom
maelstrom

maelstrom title

Have you been visiting Disney World since childhood or your teen years? Think back to the rides that you loved or were most afraid of. Are there rides you went on as a kid or maybe even an adult that you forgot about that on more recent trips to Walt Disney World were not there? Maybe you didn’t even notice!  Some left with great fanfare and some left quietly but all of these rides were given the heave-ho. Here are my Top 10 Rides We Miss Most- see if yours is on the list.

1. ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter- Magic Kingdom, Tomorrowland

This ride undoubtedly caused uproars in the 1990s but I was to enthralled to notice! You are lead into an auditorium where a huge alien is presented in a tube in the middle of the seating. Naturally, the glass breaks, sending this alien into the audience and he is ANGRY. The lights go out and the interactive seats you are in bounce and rumble as the alien comes up right behind you and you feel his breath on your neck. I still get chills thinking about it. This was replaced but a much tamer version- Stitch’s Great Escape in 2006.

2. Body Wars- Epcot, Wonders of Life Pavilion

This simulator ride boards the Bravo 229 and the audience is “shrunk”- small enough to fit inside the human body. You’re riding along on a mission to remove a splinter from the subject’s skin and witness white blood cells attacking the foreign object. Everyone panics as the ship loses power but the scientist running the mission powers up on a neuron in the brain and everyone is returned safely. This ride which would have seemed very antiquated in 2015 was eliminated in 2007.

3. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea- Magic Kingdom, Fantasyland

Introduced in 1971 in the original park lineup, this submersion ride navigating underwater territory was a fan favorite. The problem was the cost to maintain the ride was great and there were only a few submarines leaving the wait times at an excruciating level. Closed in 1994 without notice for “repairs”, it was never reopened. The official shut down occurred in 1996.

4. Mr. Toads Wild Ride- Magic Kingdom, Fantasyland

As a kid, this ride was really fun. It was counted as a dark ride, slow-moving in a dark indoor setting and not too many thrills. Based off of Wind in the Willows, the ride featured wooden characters and obstacles that would jump out-of-the-way of your car as you moved forward through the story. One of my favorite fun facts about this rides closure in 1998 is that there is a statue for Mr. Toad found at the Haunted Mansion cemetery. You can also spot a painting of Mr. Toad handing Owl (from Winnie the Pooh) the deed to the ride space when Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh took over. Keep your eyes peeled for it in Owl’s house!

5. The Skyway- Magic Kingdom

This gondola ride connected Fantasyland to Tomorrowland. Not exactly a thrill ride, this was a nice low-key way to take in some spectacular views and a load off your feet for a few minutes. This original 1971 ride was closed down in 1999, just 5 years after the Disneyland version closed down. Now you’ll just have to walk from Fantasyland to Space Mountain!

6. The Maelstrom- Epcot, Norway Pavilion

One of the more recent heartbreakers for us Disney Addicts! While the Maelstrom was no Splash Mountain or Pirates of the Caribbean, it was a nice break in the middle of the World Showcase to sit and relax out of the sun and get a little thrill in. This flume ride detailed the folklore behind traditional Norwegian Vikings. If you rode as a child, you’ll never forget the trolls! This attraction closed in October of 2014 to make way for a new Frozen attraction.

7. The Studio Backlot Tour- Hollywood Studios, Streets of America

Part walking tour and part tram, you got up close and personal with special effects like water and fire and see real props from some of your favorite films. Bone cages from Pirates of the Caribbean, the steamroller from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and at one point, house facades from The Golden Girls and Empty Nest. This attraction was once the main sight to see at Hollywood Studios (then MGM) and was shut down in fall of 2014 to make way for new adventures.

8. World of Motion- Epcot, Transportation Pavilion

Occupying the pavilion from 1982 to 1996 this ride featured animatronic characters taking us through the history of how we get around starting with walking to the wheel. Meant to be humorous, the ride was largely enjoyed but lacked the crowds after a decade. The finale of the ride was CentreCore, the futuristic imagined metropolis with flying cars and a hologram effect similar to the Hitchhiking Ghosts. The GM sponsored ride was replaced by the ever popular Test Track.

9. Double Decker Buses- Epcot

Did you ever hop a ride from the World Showcase to Future World on a tall blue double-decker bus? The 1.3 mile walk around the “world” was long, especially if you were in a hurry to see the “future”. They stopped giving guests rides back in the mid-1990s. They can still be seen housing characters for certain parades, so all is not lost.

10. Snow White’s Scary Adventure- Magic Kingdom, Fantasyland

Aptly named, this attraction was another dark ride. You were indoors and traveling through the story as the main character, Snow White herself. In 1994 it got a facelift and some of the terror was toned down for younger guests. I think we can all agree the Evil Queen is a little intense. And so is the idea of being chased through the woods by a hunter trying to kill you…but I digress. The ride was permanently shut down in 2012 during the creation of New Fantasyland. If you have the urge to see those adorable dwarves just head on over to their Mine Train!

I hope you have enjoyed this walk down memory lane as much as I have! What was your favorite past ride? What rides do you think will be next to go?
