Security Employees Sue Disney for Discrimination

DisneyCastle

iIsney Castle at night

Disney is no stranger to lawsuits. In 2 separate lawsuits filed, 6 past and present security employees are suing Disney World citing different forms of discrimination. There have been quite a few complaints over the last few years from others employed in that position as well.

Disney World employs has more than 1,000 security employees.

These suits have been filed in Orange County between 2011 to 2014. They claim they were targeted and harassed because of their race, religion, or where they came from. So far a jury has ruled against 1 plaintiff and 3 lawsuits were voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiffs themselves.

Disney has of course denied the allegations. “We have a rigorous process in place to thoroughly and independently review any and all workplace issues,” spokeswoman Kim Prunty said in an emailed statement. “These lawsuits are baseless and without merit.”

The lawsuits are as follows:

  • Camelia Joseph, a black Haitian woman who works at Disney as a security guard. She says she applied for a job in 2010 as an emergency coordinator but the position went to a white man with less experience and education. She has started an online fundraiser for her legal bills.
  • Nabil Boromi, a plain clothes operative who was fired in 2013 for “using electronic devices” while monitoring security cameras. Boromi, is Moroccan and Muslim, and claims that he was held to a higher standard than others.  The suit claims that others were not fired for the same exact behavior. He says he “complained about Arabic patrons being treated with greater suspicion whenever they entered the park” and that officers were instructed to watch black customers “because they were known for stealing. Disney denies this.

Both Boromi and Joseph are represented by Orlando attorney Jerry Girley. The other four were represented by Jacksonville attorney David Sacks.

Several of the complaints have been made by longtime Disney employees.

Back in 2011 these plaintiffs dismissed their own lawsuits.

  • Security manager Sharon Cardinez, a foreign-born black woman, said she endured “racially insensitive” remarks. She also claims that she had to produce a death certificate to prove her brothers death in order to get bereavement leave, which she claims white employees did not have to do. She said she dropped her lawsuit because it was getting  too expensive and harder to keep up with while dealing with deaths in the family.
  • Marissa Rivera, was terminated. She said a co-worker repeatedly used racial slurs toward her.
  • Elaina Evans, who worked at Disney about 30 years, claimed racial discrimination. Evans, who is black, said she was moved without explanation from resorts to parks in 2009. She claims she was given heavier workloads than other security managers and also given menial tasks compared with her white male co-workers. She withdrew her case in 2013, she said because of issues with a personal bankruptcy.

John C. Reilly Is Back For Another Round In Wreck It Ralph 2

wreck-it-ralph

John C. Reilly, the voice of our favorite video game hero, Wreck it Ralph, just confirmed he has signed on for the 2012 sequel.  Although The Disney Studios have not officially given the go ahead for the film, signing Reilly up and the previous statement by Director Rich Moore let’s us know it is on the way.   Moore said he began exploring ideals for the sequel right away and was leaning toward the story line involving online and console gaming.

Wreck-It Ralph released in theatres in 2012 brought us Ralph (John C. Reilly) as the bad guy in a video game.   Tired of being bad and having to always see Fix-It Felix be the hero, Ralph decides to set off on a journey.  Hopping from one game to the next, looking for his chance to be a hero.

For now, we can only speculate as to the storyline, but with the possibility of online and console gaming as part of the story, we are in for a treat.

Your favorite Entertainment Writer, Loretta Garcia wants to know – which game in the Wreck-it Ralph arcade would you like to see in the sequel?    Stay tuned for updates, promotions and Disney news at www.chipandco.com.   See ya at the movies!

2015-07-14 08_50_38-Prince Harry announces host city for next Invictus Games in 2016 - YouTube

Prince Harry announced from London via video this morning that the second Invictus Games will be held May 8-12, 2016, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Invictus Games is the only international adaptive sporting event for injured active duty and veteran service members.

The Invictus Games uses the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect of all those who serve their country as well as their families and caregivers.

Invictus Games Orlando 2016 will bring together more than 400 competitors from up to 14 nations to compete in 10 sports – archery, cycling, indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, triathlon, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

“The power of sports and competition has proven to me that I am still the same person I was before injury. No matter what comes I will face that adversity and come out on top, Unconquered,” said U.S. Army Sergeant Ryan McIntosh, a winner of three medals in London in 2014, including one gold. McIntosh was also the MVP for a celebrity wheelchair rugby match that included Prince Harry.

Following a visit to the U.S.-based Warrior Games, Prince Harry was inspired to create an expanded international version and founded the first Invictus Games hosted in London in 2014.

The Invictus Games Foundation awarded the 2016 Games to Orlando because of the area’s great tourism infrastructure and Disney’s outstanding sporting facilities. The Orlando area also has a large veteran population and is home to the Orlando VA Medical Center, which serves over 90,000 veterans.

“I am absolutely delighted to announce that the United States has taken up the challenge and will host the next Invictus Games near Orlando, Florida,” said Prince Harry. “I can’t wait to see the American public supporting these inspirational men and women at the next Games. And what better place to host such a great family event than Orlando.”

The Fisher House Foundation was a sponsor of the 2014 Invictus Games. Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation, will serve as Chairman and CEO for Invictus Games Orlando 2016.

“Sport and exercise are important to the health and healing of our wounded military heroes,” said Fisher. “We are honored the Invictus Games is coming to the United States and grateful to have a world class facility and host in Walt Disney World Resort and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The competitors, their families and caregivers are all inspirations and each of their stories is a testament to courage, love and perseverance.”

Competitors, live audiences and those watching the 2016 Invictus Games at home will be treated to the world-class venues of the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the pre-eminent multi-sport facility of its kind. Having hosted more than 70 different sports featuring competitors from more than 70 different countries, including events for wounded military veterans, the 230-acre Disney facility is uniquely positioned to host a global event such as the Invictus Games 2016.

“Disney is proud to host the 2016 Invictus Games Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and support service men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom,”  said George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, studies show that adaptive sports provide clear benefits for disabled veterans including less stress, reduced dependency on pain and depression medication, fewer secondary medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension), higher achievement in education and employment and more independence.

The 2014 Invictus Games opened with the help of a message from First Lady Michelle Obama, and Dr. Jill Biden presented medals to the American team during the medals ceremonies.  More than 400 competitors from 13 nations competed for gold in nine sports and a driving challenge. Some 65,000 spectators attended the sporting events, opening ceremony and closing concert and more than 10 million watched the Games on the BBC.

The word Invictus means “unconquered.” It embodies the fighting spirit of the wounded service personnel who are on the journey to recovery. Generations have drawn on the words of William Ernest Henley’s 1878 poem “Invictus” for strength during times of adversity. “I am the master of my fate,” wrote Henley, himself an amputee.

Top Ways to Save Money at Disneyland Resort

disneyland address

sleeping-beauty-castle1

Disneyland is known as “the happiest place on earth” and is a top destination for most families. It can also be a very expensive place. But, if you plan ahead and try some of these tips for saving money, you’ll be able to enjoy your trip without putting a huge dent in your wallet!

  • Make an autograph book. Autograph books are a must have for many families visiting Disneyland. These books can cost up to $30 depending on where you purchase them and what options they come with. Making one yourself is much cheaper and adds a more personal touch. Buy a small generic photo album and add colorful paper for character’s signatures. Then you can add photos with the characters as well!
  • Purchase souvenirs in advance. You can find Disney items practically anywhere these days. From Target and Walmart to the dollar store, there are many places where you can save money on items for your trip. Instead of buying something from every shop in Disneyland, you can pull out a Disney toy for your child that you already bought at a cheaper price! Also, if your child wants to dress up while at Disneyland, shop around for Disney costumes and dress up clothes before you go to the park.
  • Bring your own stroller/wheelchair. If you are planning on using a stroller or wheelchair, it’s cheaper to bring your own. Stroller rentals at Disneyland are $15 a day and wheelchair rentals are $12 a day. You aren’t allowed to take either of those outside of the park areas. So, if your little ones are asleep at the end of a long park day, you’ll have to wake them up or carry them back to your hotel or shuttle. Your best options are to bring your own or rent from an outside company that will drop off and pick up the rental at your hotel.
  • Eat breakfast before going to the parks. Most hotels in the Disneyland area will offer a continental breakfast or have a mini fridge in each room. If your room comes with a fridge, stock up on breakfast items like milk, cereal, yogurt, and fruit. This will save you a good deal of money since breakfast can cost almost as much as lunch and dinner if you eat in the parks. If you want to eat out, there are a few local restaurants in the area, like IHOP, Denny’s and McDonald’s.
  • Bring your own food & drinks. Disney will allow most outside food and drink items into the parks. Disney will not allow hard-sided coolers, large coolers, glass containers (except baby food or medications), or alcoholic beverages. Take in snacks for the day or pack a lunch. If you want soda or bottled water, take those in with you because drinks in the parks are around $3 each. Disney sells strictly Coke products, so if you’re a Pepsi drinker, you’ll want to bring in your drinks. Stick to the quick service/counter service restaurants in the parks to also save money.
  • Go during the off-season. To make the most of your money, visit Disneyland Resort during the off-season. September-March (excluding December) tend to be less crowded and even hotels can be cheaper. Also, try to stay away from the parks on holidays as those tend to be more crowded. If you’re only able to visit during peak season, try to go on a weekday. Planning your trip around the peak season will help you to save money and have a better experience overall.
  • Take your kids before age 3. Children under the age of 3 get into the parks for free! Even if your child turns 3 on your trip, they’ll get in for free so long as they are 2 at the beginning of your trip. If you’re able to plan a trip while your child is under 3, you can save a good amount of money.
  • Watch for special offers and discounts. During the year Disneyland will release different offers and discounts. Sometimes they are ticket only discounts and other times they are vacation package special offers. Keep a lookout for discounts for the dates you want to travel!

With the right planning and preparation, you can make your Disneyland trip more affordable! For help booking a magical Disney vacation, email me today!
