10 Ideas for Disney World Departure Days

Last Days at Disney

Last Days at Disney

You want to know the absolute worst part about visiting Disney? At some point, you have to go home. I know, it’s the worst feeling ever! During my most recent trip to Disney, I actually cried a little as the plane for taking off because I didn’t want to leave. But alas, Disney departure days are inevitable, so let’s make the best of them! Here are 10 ideas for your Disney departure day.

Character Dining: There is something so quintessentially Disney about character dining. Whether you go for the atmosphere, character interactions, or the food – you will not be disappointed. I really like to book a character dining experience for my last day at Disney. I find that it is a great way to wrap up the trip and really reflect on the vacation. Having a sit-down meal is a great way to check in with the other members of your party and talk about favorite moments. On my last trip to Disney, we had breakfast at Crystal Palace and it ended up being one of the highlights of the whole trip.

Meet Your Favorite Character: Disney vacations have a tendency to fly by, so make sure to carve out some time on your last day to meet your favorite character if you haven’t already. I always like to stop and say “see ya real soon” to the big cheese himself, Mickey Mouse.

Disney Springs: If you aren’t planning on heading to the parks for your last day, definitely consider checking out Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney). First, it’s free! You don’t have to worry about one more day of ticket expenses. Second, you can pick up all your last minute souvenirs at World of Disney and the other boutique shops. Third, grab some great grub. Disney Springs is filled with amazing restaurants that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters.

La Nouba: If you are looking for a unique experience that is not available anywhere else, consider checking out Cirque de Soleil’s La Nouba at Disney Springs.

“Witness this international cast as they perform glorious feats of incredible strength and breathtaking beauty. The French phrase “la nouba” literally translates to “the party.” And do these performers ever know how to celebrate! Acrobats, singers, trapeze artists, jugglers and clowns—more than 65 artists representing 15 countries—delight and mystify with daring acts of grace. A riot of color washes over every scene with the imaginative costumes, quixotic makeup and dynamic sets.”disneyworld.disney.go.com

Showtimes are available for 6:00pm and 9:00pm. This is great if you have a very late flight, or a very early flight the next morning.

Spa Treatment: Real talk, walking around Disney for multiple days in a row is hard work! I know that my legs are killing me by the end of my trip. If you are looking for a relaxing way to spend your last day at Disney, consider booking a spa treatment. Wouldn’t it be great to head back to the real world completely relaxed and rejuvenated?

Pool Time: If a spa treatment isn’t in your budget (I know it’s not in mine!), you can still relax on your last day by spending some time at your resort’s pool. Take a swim, lay in the sun, or just cool off in the shallow end. Hanging out by the pool is a low-key way to wrap up your Disney experience. Just remember to pack some Ziploc bags for the wet swimsuits!

Hotel Hop: If you are anything like me (or the millions of other Disney guests), you spend most of your vacation running around the parks all day, everyday. If you aren’t at the parks, you are probably at your resort. On your last day at Disney, take some time and visit some of Disney’s other resorts. This a fun and free way to check out different areas of Disney, and a great way to start dreaming of your next vacation!

Boardwalk: Along the same vein as resort hopping, I like to take a few hours to walk about Boardwalk. My boyfriend likes ESPN Club, and I like sitting by the water with an ice-cream cone. Boardwalk provides a great opportunity to just relax and take a little bit of a mental break.

One Last Ride: If you have one last day of park tickets available, head to your favorite park and jump on your favorite attraction one last time. That last spin around Space Mountain can be bittersweet, but worth it! If the lines are too long, spend a few hours racing to all the attractions with a short wait time – who cares if Hall of President’s isn’t really your thing – at least you can say you did it!

Confirm Your Flight: Okay, this one isn’t fun, but it’s definitely important. On the last day of your trip, take some time to pack up, triple check your room for anything you may have forgotten, tip mousekeeping, and confirm your flight itinerary. Leaving Disney is just a little more bearable when everything runs smoothly.

Leaving Disney is hard. Like, really hard! But you can still have a great time on your departure day. Whether you are heading to the parks for one last visit, taking some time to chill out pool-side, or exploring Disney Springs – departure days can be filled with Disney magic.

How do you like to spend your last day at Disney? Let me know in the comments!

Fulton’s Crab House in Disney Springs will be closed for a lengthy refurbishment beginning April 4, 2016 through December 31, 2016.

Fulton’s Crab House is a fine/signature dining, seafood restaurant located on a huge riverboat permanently docked in The Landing at Disney Springs. It is a replica of the riverboat that Walt Disney himself purchased for his wife Lilly.

Top 6 ways to make the most of your Disney Dining Plan

There is a lot of discussion if the Disney Dining Plan is worth the money, well I’m not going to try to convince you to go for the dining plan, or to stay away from it. This article is simply if you already have the dining plan how to maximize it.

Here are the tips I found for you!

6. Understand the valve of the quick service meals – Quick service meals are valued at $15.00, don’t get a salad, go for a big meal. At Animal Kingdom’s Flame Tree Barbecue you can get chicken and ribs! GO FOR THE BIG MEALS!

5. Understand the value of the table service mealsTable service meals are valued at $35.00, use it all! This is the time where you look for the most expensive restaurant, with food you enjoy of course, and go for it.  I would never pay out-of-pocket for O’hana but on the dining plan I go all the time!

4. Don’t use your snack credits for watersnack credits are worth $5.00, water is much cheaper than that. You get a refillable mug with the dining plan that can be used at your resort only, but bring it to the park, fill it at a water foundation! Get a real snack!

3. Don’t use your dining plan on breakfast – this is usually the cheapest meal of the day anyway so why would you waste a dining credit on it? There are no desserts with breakfast, if you want to add fruit or something you’ll have to pay for it anyway. So save these credits for lunch or dinner!

2. Use table service for dinner instead of lunch – Just like breakfast is the cheapest meal of the day, dinner is much more expensive than lunch so use those table service credits for dinner. There are usually more options for dinner than at lunch anyway.

1. Use your dining snack credits at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival – You can get some pretty amazing little tastes at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, why pay for them? Use those snack credits and eat your way through the World Showcase for free!

I also have one more tip for those left over snack credits, on your last day use your snack credits to get a bunch of goodies to take home with you!

I hope you enjoyed all of my tips and happy eating!

Another exciting bonus feature will be the filmed table read of “The Force Awakens,” showing the first time all of the cast, both original and new, got together in one room and read the script of Episode VII. As a major Star Wars fan, this is a bonus feature that is sure to be exciting and nostalgic, and one of the features I’m most excited about. Disney/Lucasfilm has released a teaser trailer for the “The Story Awakens – Table Read”:

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is now available for pre-order for Digital HD and Blu-Ray combo pack.

I’m always on the look out for a unique new Mickey Mouse necklace, so I was pleased to stumble on this Hidden Mickey Scrollwork Necklace from AOSDESIGN on Etsy!

This Hidden Mickey Pendant Necklace is a hollow mickey head with three colorful beads inside. The pendant features a hidden mickey scroll work design, and  measures 1.25 across, 2 inches tall, and 1 inch wide. The chain is also an impressive 30 inches long, which makes it great for using as a statement piece with a cute spring dress or flowing tank. I’m loving the vintage feel of the chain paired with the antique gold tone of the pendant. Best of all, it’s a steal at only $8.00!

10 Disney World Rides That Might Give You Motion Sickness

MotionSickness Chip Co
MotionSickness Chip Co

Motion Sickness

When most of us think about a trip to Walt Disney World, it conjures up images of mild-mannered family friendly rides like It’s a Small World or Dumbo the Flying Elephant.  But don’t be fooled, Disney World has its fair share of attractions that really pack a punch…. right to the tummy.  So if you’re faint of heart or prone to nausea you may want to think twice or strategize a bit before tackling our list of 10 Rides at Disney World That Might Give You Motion Sickness.

10) Soarin’–  On the surface EPCOT’s hang gliding simulator looks innocent enough as it sweeps you across a series of beautiful landscapes making you feel like you are soaring through the skies.  However, people with vertigo may want to consider their options before agreeing to be hoisted up 40 feet in the air for the simulation.  Those with motion sickness should also be wary when it comes to the giant Omnimax screen that projects the vistas you are flying over.  If you’ve ever felt sick at an IMAX movie, the feeling you will get during Soarin’ should be largely the same.

Please note: Soarin’ is now closed for refurbishment and expected to open Summer 2016.

9) Space Mountain – Though this “high speed” indoor space coaster provides a fantastic dose of vintage Disney, it’s also garnered a reputation for making visitors feel a bit queasy.  Space rockets climb up a 180 ft. mountain before making their speedy decent through a predominately dark ride with the occasional strobe light effect.  This can leave guests feeling disoriented as they are unable to see which way they’ll twist or turn next.  And though the ride has been upgraded since its launch in 1975, the track is rough and jerky at times.  Add to this several hard turns and drops and guests returning from their trip through the cosmos may feel a bit sore.

8) Dinosaur –  Part track ride, part motion simulator, Animal Kingdom’s Dinosaur takes you back 65 million years to locate an Iguanadon in a mission that could best be described as “bone rattling”.  Though Dinosaur boasts some of the best animatronics at Disney, it’s hard to soak it all in as you are hurled through a dark forest while trying to avoid an incoming meteor shower.  This very rough Jeep ride has its fair share of hairpin turns along with some very big bumps in the road.  Guests that feel jostled easily or are uncomfortable with dark spaces and strobe lighting may want to think again or at least avoid eating churros until after your journey through the Cretaceous period.

7) Astro Orbiter  At first glance, Magic Kingdom’s Astro Orbiter looks quite mild-mannered. It’s essentially a rocket-themed variation on the Dumbo spinner ride that gently spins you around and boasts breathtaking views of Tomorrowland.  However, the fact that visitors need to take an elevator up to the loading bay should be the first indication that there’s more to this ride that meets the eye.  Raising you to heights of over 80 feet above the parks, it’s not the best option for those afraid of heights or with vertigo.  Riders with sensitive tummies should also beware.  This ride appears to move quicker than its long-eared counterpart and also has a joystick allowing your rocket to move up and down rather rapidly if you have a maniacal fellow-rider at the helm.

6)   The Sum of All Thrills–  Tucked away in Epcot’s Innoventions pavilion, this design-your-own rollercoaster simulator looks pretty tame but can actually put you through your paces.  Guests use a computer program to design the loops, barrel rolls and drops, choosing between jet aircraft, bobsled or roller coaster options.  Overzealous roller coaster creators take note: once you are strapped in, a robotic arm will take you through every twist and turn that you’ve created.  Also a caution to visitors that suffer from claustrophobia, the ride apparatus does come down over your head which may make riders feel a bit panicky.  But fear not, The Sum of All Thrills comes complete with a Panic Button that you can press if your creativity gets the best of you and the ride you’ve customized is a bit too over-the-top.  That’s right, a Panic Button.  You have been warned.

5) Expedition Everest – When thinking about Disney’s “thrill rides” Animal Kingdom’s Expedition Everest is usually the first that comes to mind. The tallest attraction at Walt Disney World, this Himalayan runaway train ride makes a haphazard decent down Everest as you try to outrun a very angry Yeti.  With a 118 ft lift hill, this coaster is best avoided by those afraid of heights.  Visitors with motion sickness should also note that as you progress through the ride, the railroad track reaches a dead-end and the coaster will send you hurtling backwards into darkness.  If you’ve ever gotten sick sitting backwards on a train, subway or bus, this is a pretty good sign of how Expedition Everest can make you feel.  Don’t give the Yeti the satisfaction.

 4) Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster –  Picture yourself tearing through the busy streets of LA in your own stretch limo while Aerosmith blares loudly. That’s pretty much what Hollywood Studio’s indoor steel coaster is designed to simulate. Yet, what starts off a joyride can quickly turn sour for guests with a history of getting sick on rides.  Even if you make it through a launch that takes you from 0 to 60mph in under 3 seconds, you will also be greeted by an inversion that promises 4 g’s (that’s 1 g more than what astronauts experience at a shuttle launch – I checked).  It’s not surprising that many guests report feeling a bit worse for wear. There are corkscrews, sharp twists, and darkness throughout.  And did I mention loud Aerosmith music?  Sensitive riders should steer clear or risk ending up with one heck of a headache or tummy ache.

 3) Mad Tea Party – One of those quintessential rides that most of us associate with the Magic Kingdom, Mad Tea Party has served as the joyful setting for countless Walt Disney World adverts.  For that reason, it must be quite harmless right? Think again. Lured in by the colorful teacups, the Chinese lanterns or that cute little mouse peeking out of the teapot, many visitors that suffer from motion sickness make the mistake of casually hopping on this ride unaware of the damage it can do.  What starts off, as a fun and lighthearted ride can quickly go astray when your little pirate or princess vehemently decides to start spinning the wheel and your teacup as fast as they possible can.  Before you know it, you’re desperately clinging to the sides and counting down the seconds before you can once again plant your feet on solid ground.  Parents, if you or the kids get dizzy easily give this ride a miss or insist they take it slow at the wheel.

2) Primeval Whirl –  A tribute to Coney Island-style midway attractions, Animal Kingdom’s Primeval Whirl is part coaster, part Tilt-a-Whirl and part Wild Mouse.  Think hills, hairpin turns, and spinning – lots and lots of spinning. Unlike Mad Tea Party, guests cannot control the spinning themselves and with no two rides on Primeval Whirl being exactly the same,  it is hard to predict just how many times you’ll be twirled around.   This means you’re taking a big risk if trying to keep your motion sickness at bay.  Sudden stopping and starting is another characteristic of this ride.  Guest may find the unexpected change of direction while spinning and diving to be a little on the painful side. Primeval Whirl may beckon you with its colorful and playful theming but it consistently ranks high on visitors’ made-me-feel-sick lists.

1) Mission Space (Orange)–  It’s hard to predict what rides may make a person sick- everyone is different.  However, this is one ride so consistently successful at making people toss their cookies that each seat comes with its own complimentary barf bag.  EPCOT’s Mission Space is a centrifuge ride that is designed to simulate what a space flight would feel like.  It quickly spins, generating up to 2.5 g’s as it simulates a lunar landing.  The effect can be anything from weightlessness to extreme nausea.  As a matter of fact, Astronauts have boasted that riding Mission Space is as close as many people will get to experiencing what space travel is truly like.  Yet due to its enclosed dark spaces and rapid spinning, many of us will be thankful we picked the career that we did!

Please Note: In trying to make Mission Space more accessible to visitors, Disney created a milder version of the attraction, Mission Space (Green), without the centrifuge.  The ride has the same design so if you have claustrophobia you may want to pass.  But other riders may find that this simple motion simulator still provides a thoroughly entertaining and immersive experience without the edge.

Did the rides that make you woozy make the cut? Have you experienced motion sickness on a ride that’s not been listed? Share your experiences by leaving us a comment below.

Earn a Marvel Internship With the Captain America: Civil War – Girl’s Reforming the Future Challenge

CAcivilwar

CAcivilwar

The Avengers, although in “Captain America: Civil War” (the new trailer was just released yesterday) are in disagreement on what path to take in making the world a better place, all have the goal to protect the world and enhance quality of life. In conjunction with this latest Marvel movie (being released May 6th), Marvel is holding a contest supported by the Science & Entertainment Exchange, which aims to encourage young women to create positive change in the world with science and technology.

The challenge is to create an innovative project, either science, technology, engineering, or mathematical based, and submit a video demonstrating that project and its potential to change the world. Girl 15-18 (in grades 10-12) are eligible to participate in this project. Based on the videos, there will be five finalists who will go to California to present their project in person to a panel of experts. Finally, the final winner will get the ultimate reward of having a one-week internship at Marvel Studios.

After the internship, the winner will share their experience with the world in a video talking about their Marvel internship experience, as well as their innovative, potentially world-changing project. I think this is a great project Marvel has undertaken, as it will inspire and encourage so many young girls that they can excel in the fields of math and science, and most importantly that no matter how young we are, we all can have the potential to make the world a better place!

The contest entry period is March 11th-March 26th, for complete rules and to enter click here.

Wilderness Lodge Refurbishment: Progress Report

2016 03 08 16.45.15
2016 03 08 16.45.15

WL

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has been undergoing an extensive transformation and work on the resort is expected to continue through 2017.  Here is a sneak peak at some of the progress that has been made at the resort to date.

There is currently limited availability at the resort since approximately 400 out of the 728 guest rooms have been closed off.  A large portion of the main building has been boarded up and scaffolding appears on the outside.

Roaring Fork is the quick service restaurant located on the ground floor of the main lodge. One of the most noticeable changes here is that guests are now given a number stand to place at their table. When your order is ready, a cast member will bring the food directly to your table. In addition, the number of counters to order food at has decreased from 3 counters down to only 1 counter.

With all of the trees that have been cleared, a standard view room at the Wilderness Lodge now features a view of the Magic Kingdom and Wishes fireworks.  I would expect some of these rooms to be reclassified from standard to theme park view so don’t get your hopes up too much.

Some of the pathways at the Wilderness Lodge Villas have been fenced off and you may catch a construction worker or two in the area.

The Wilderness Lodge plans to build 26 waterside bungalows, similar to those at the Polynesian Village Resort.  The bungalows will offer modern conveniences including full kitchen, washer & dryer along with an amazing view and mostly likely a hefty price tag.

The Silver Creek Springs main pool at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has recently undergone refurbishment and is open to all guests to enjoy during their stay. A new pool is planned for the Disney Vacation Club portion of the resort. In the meantime, the leisure pool at the villas is currently closed along with the marina, playground and beach. Movie night has been moved indoors and both bike and watercraft rentals will be available at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.  The water launch from Wilderness Lodge to Magic Kingdom as well as Fort Wilderness and the Contemporary Resort will remain unaffected during the construction.

Guests at the Lodge have reported that the ongoing construction at the resort has not been a hindrance to their stay and wouldn’t deter them from returning.  This deluxe resort is sure to be a breathtaking site once construction is completed in 2017. Until then, guests can still enjoy the rustic charm and convenient location of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

Take a Pirates and Pals Fireworks Cruise at Walt Disney World

Pirates and Pals

Looking for adventure on the Seven Seas? Set sail on the Seven Seas Lagoon aboard a Pirates and Pals Fireworks Cruise!

Your adventure starts at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, check the notification board in the lobby or with the front desk to see where you are meeting your crew mates for the evening, and they will direct you to where you need to go.  Upon arrival you are assigned to be on the Smee boat or the Hook boat.  Everyone in your party receives a special Pirates and Pals bandana.  It is requested you wear this so they can know you are part of the crew.  Arriving at the recommended time for the evening will give you plenty of time to complete a Pirate Scavenger Hunt in Disney’s Contemporary Resort!  When you complete the hunt, you can return your answers to the check-in desk for a pirate prize.

Before you have time to say “Yo, ho let’s go!”  Your pirate guides arrive for the evening, Patch and also a second Patch.  These two lively pirates are great pirate hosts for the evening.  After greeting you they open up the dessert and snacks buffet filled for hungry pirates.  Cotton Candy, ice cream, cake, drinks, small snacks like pretzels and chips, and of course a whole treasure chest filled with gold doubloons, chocolate in currency.  It is best to plan on having dinner before arrival.

While you are snacking on pirate treats, Captain Hook and Mr.Smee arrive for everyone to have a chance to take pictures with before heading out to the boats.  Captain Hook and Mr. Smee will walk down to the docks with you, but they do not board the boats. Before leaving you will line up in two groups according to your assigned boat.  One lucky pre-selected pirate for each boat will be assigned an important pirate job official boat flag holder for the evening!  They will lead the way with Patch and Hook, or Patch and Smee, out to the docks.

As you board and say good bye to Captain Hook and Mr.Smee your adventure starts on sea with Patch as your guide.  Our Patch for the evening was fantastic.  As you sail out to the fireworks viewing location taking in the views, there is pirate tales and getting to know the other mates on your boat!  Soon enough you are in front of Magic Kingdom with an ideal view for Wishes Nighttime Spectacular.  There is no need to worry about missing the music that accompanies the show, because it is played through the speakers on the boat as soon as the show begins.

Wishes is my favorite nighttime show at the Walt Disney World Resort, I could watch it a million times, I have already watched it hundreds of times, and it never gets old.  While watching right in front of Cinderella’s castle is the preferred viewing location, out on the Seven Seas Lagoon is my 2nd favorite.  If you have little pirates or mermaids with you that do not necessarily like the loud noise of the fireworks when watching in the park, this is a great option to try.

As a tip: Be courteous to your fellow mates trying to enjoy the show, limit your flashes if you have to use one. The boat is in constant motion so it can be hard to get that perfect shot in.  Sit back, take it all in and enjoy the show.

Once the show has ended, your journey back to Disney’s Contemporary begins, complete with pirate trivia and of course pirate singing!  Every little pirate gets a prize before stepping off the boat, so don’t worry if your pirate brain is already sleeping for the evening upon return.Just when you think your swashbuckling adventures have ended for the evening, a special surprise is waiting on the docks…Peter Pan.  Each guest has the chance to crow, chat and take a photo with Peter Pan, before flying off to Neverland.  It truly is a magical Disney experience for all ages!  The cruise is only available on select evenings and is able to be booked 180 days in advance.  You can book your voyage by calling 1-800-WDW-PLAY.

Ready to set sail on a Pirate Journey?  As an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner with MickeyTravels, my services are complimentary and I would be happy to help you plan your next Disney vacation! As part of my services I could help you plan an itinerary to fit the Pirates & Pals Fireworks Voyage into your trip, and set up any available reservations for you!  Contact me at [email protected] and I will help you start planning so you can sit back and enjoy your trip before you even arrive, or my Facebook page here.
