Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Press Conference 1 Highlights

SW

SW

I had the pleasure last week to sit with the Director, Producer and Cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in San Francisco in the amazing Lucas Films studio. Visiting the studios has been a dream of mine since I was a little boy being able to meet and talk with the cast of a Star Wars movie was just icing on the cake.

I had the opportunity to sit in on 2 press conferences on Sunday morning, in this session we heard from:

  • Kathy Kennedy / Producer
  • Gareth Edwards / Director
  • Diego Luna “Cassian”
  • Alan Tudyk “K2SO”
  • Donnie Yen “Chirrut”
  • John Knoll / Story

(Order from right to left in the photo above)

The other members of the media who were invited asked some interesting questions that I will share with you below. I however couldn’t get the microphone to ask my question…

We only saw just under 30 minutes of various clips from the Rogue One the night before, but having talked to many of the people there we were all impressed and can’t wait to see the rest of the film which comes out on December 16th!

img_20161204_103552

Here are a few of their questions:

Question – Hello, this question is for Gareth, I was wondering, what was the most interesting thing for you in relation to the fight between the Empire and the Rebels, because it seems that this version is like grittier, you’re trying to just like talk about like moral issues. I don’t know how was for you to just like try to add something more complex maybe to the mythology.

GARETH EDWARDS: Yeah, I mean, when we started this whole process it was one of the things Kathy would be asking the whole time is, okay, how is this going to be different, we need to differentiate ourselves from the saga. And so it was like, okay, when we start playing around and experimenting, one of the things we did was we took real war photography like photographs from Vietnam and World War II and the Gulf and stuff like this and we used this bit of software that John wrote for Photoshop and put in rebel helmets on the soldiers and rebel guns and some X-Wings in the background instead of fighter jets, and suddenly you looked at this stuff and it was really engaging, and everyone who came and looked around the building and we showed them things, they’d get to these images and go oh my god, wow, I really want to see that film, and the studio loved, everybody loved it, and they would say like, just go make that, and that’s kind of what we went off and did.

But it was also like being in a war, like you know, the film crew became like the characters in a way. It’s sort of a cliché that the process of making the film becomes like the story you’re telling, and in this case we were all literally in the trenches together trying to achieve these impossible tasks, like the characters were trying to steal Death Star plans but as a group we’re trying to make a great Star Wars movie and so you feel like you’ve been through a battle together and there’s like – I mean, maybe I’m speaking for myself here but I feel like there’s this connection you have now – like no matter what happens, Diego, if I see you like in 20 years, we’re just going to have that, like we’ve been through a way together, right?

Question – It’s been revealed that George Lucas came to the set of this. What’s it like to have George on set, and has he seen any footage yet? Does he have plans to see?

GARETH EDWARDS: So two days ago, we got to show George the movie, and we all had a phone call and I got to speak with him yesterday, and I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now.

Question – There’s obviously a huge anticipation for this movie and rightly so, but for those, you know, who are not the diehard sci-fi fans or Star Wars fans at all, do you feel that they have to maybe revisit the whole Star Wars universe to appreciate this or is this more of a standalone.

KATHY KENNEDY: It’s absolutely a standalone. I think the great thing is that this could be a real introduction to the whole franchise for many people who haven’t necessarily followed it, or younger people who don’t know that much about Star Wars, and other parts of the world who don’t know that much about Star Wars. So it really does stand on its own.

The interviews went on for about 20 minutes and I will say Alan Tudyk who plays “K2SO” is not only hilarious in the movie but was also equally as funny in person. I am a big fan of Donnie Yen from many of his martial arts films so it was very cool to hear him talk about how he brought his martial arts background into the movie. All of the cast were wonderful in the interview and really helped build anticipation for the movie. Did I mention I can’t wait to see it?

Stay tuned tomorrow for my second interview with the rest of the cast of the film including the beautiful Felicity Jones.

Disney Files Patent for Eye-Tracking as Way of Improving the Guest Experience

Disney Patent

Disney Patent

Though it may seem like the stuff of science fiction, reports are surfacing the Disney has filed for a patent that would allow them to measure a visitor’s gaze.  This would help Disney to determine where visitors tend to look during rides, attractions and performances.  This knowledge could help Disney make adjustments that would enhance the user experience particularly when it comes to things like animatronics.

The technology that is being patented is a computer program that has been designed to pinpoint where a group of guests are gazing by focusing on the whites of their eyes.  According to the patent:

“By tracking the gaze of a participant, a computing system may direct various animatronics, automated objects or the like to interact with the participant.  For example, a computing system within a theme park may direct an animatronic character from a movie to make a noise if a participant is looking at that animatronic character.”

This is leading Disney insiders to speculate that this new technology will be used to enhance the lifelike qualities of the Na’vi when Pandora: The World of Avatar opens next year. The patent also suggests that the technology could be used on larger crowds during things like sporting events.  By tracking the gaze of an audience, cameras filming the game could determine what is of most interest and focus on filming in those areas.  Disney also mentioned that they may use this to track the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.

This is the second major patent filed by Disney this year.  The first was to get permission to utilize drone technology which can be seen for the first time in the “Starbright Holidays: An Intel Collaboration” which will be wowing guests at Disney Springs through the end of December.

So what do you think about this proposed bit of technology? Is it a neat enhancement or a bit too Big Brother?

rogue-one-china-poster-cropped

Disney has set a Jan. 6, 2017 release date in China for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” according to a Disney representative in the country.

The movie, which stars Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, opens Dec. 16 in the U.S. The plot centers on a group of unlikely heroes who band together to steal the plans to the Death Star — the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction.

The cast of Gareth Edwards’ film includes two Chinese stars, Donnie Yen and Wen Jiang, who both feature prominently in the movie’s local poster.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opened in China on Jan. 9, 2016, and racked up a record-breaking $53 million over its opening weekend. The final gross in the territory was $125 million. The movie grossed $2.1 billion globally.

China is the world’s second-biggest box-office territory, and continues to grow at speed. Theatrical admissions exceeded that of North America for the first time in the first half of this year, increasing by almost 30% to 722.9 million, according to media analyst firm IHS Technology.

Pixar’s Coco and other movie news

COCO LOGO-1B FINAL COLOR on BK 5-23-16

Pixar’s next original movie, called “Coco”, and it’s the sole novel film for the studio over the next few years. Then production ramps up for Cars 3 (scheduled for release in June 2017) and then “The Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4”.

First, the voice cast: Benjamin Bratt and Gael García Bernal will lead “Coco” alongside newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, who will voice the film’s main character, a 12-year-old Mexican boy named Miguel. Character actress Renée Victor also joins the cast as Abuelita, Miguel’s grandmother. However, to understand whom Bratt and Bernal are voicing, it helps to get a little context. What’s “Coco” even about?

“Coco” follows the secret musical ambitions of Miguel, who resides in a lively, loud Mexican village but comes from a family of shoemakers that may be the town’s only music-hating household. For generations, the Riveras have banned music because they believe they’ve been cursed by it; as their family history goes, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife decades earlier to follow his own dreams of performing, leaving Imelda (Miguel’s great-great-grandmother) to take control as the matriarch of the now-thriving Rivera line and declare music dead to the family forever.

But Miguel harbors a secret desire to seize his musical moment, inspired by his favorite singer of all time, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Bratt). It’s only after Miguel discovers an amazing link between himself and De la Cruz that he takes action to emulate the famous singer and, in doing so, accidentally enters the Land of the Dead.

In the beautiful underworld, it’s not long until Miguel encounters the souls of his own family — generations’ worth of long-dead but no less vivacious Rivera ancestors, including great-great-grandmother Imelda. Still, given the opportunity to roam around the Land of the Dead, Miguel decides to track down De la Cruz himself. He teams up with another friendly (and skeletal) spirit — a trickster named Hector, voiced by Bernal — to find De la Cruz, earn his family’s blessing to perform, and return to the Land of the Living before time runs out.

“It was important to us from day one that we had an all-Latino cast,” says Unkrich, who with producer Anderson shepherded “Toy Story 3” to become the world’s second highest-grossing animated film. “It focused us, and we ended up with a fantastic mix of people — some from Mexico and some from Los Angeles.”

There’s plenty more “Coco” coming your way to tide you over until the film is released on Nov. 22, 2017.
