Los Angeles Will Be Home To George Lucas’ New Museum

A decision has finally been made after months of intense speculation. It was announced today that George Lucas’ Museum of Narrative Art will be living in Los Angeles over San Francisco.

The filmmaker’s personal collection of fine and popular art, including memorabilia connected to his “Star Wars” franchise, will fill a futuristic-looking new museum planned for L.A.’s Exposition Park. That beat out a competing design for Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. The rivalry had pitted the two cities in the competition not only for Lucas’ collection and the tourism it will bring, but also for the thousands of jobs that backers said the project will create.

Lucas has said he will fund the project to the tune of about $1 billion, including building costs, his art and an endowment of at least $400 million.

“It feels like this incredible gift has come home. I always thought Los Angeles was the natural place to spread the vision of George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, to make art and creativity accessible and inspirational to the next generation,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said of the filmmaker and his wife. “It’s a natural place to have this museum in the creative capital of the world and in the geographic center of the city. It’s a banner day for L.A.”

Garcetti said the 275,000-square-foot museum will lead to tens of thousands of jobs in construction, and he estimated the number of permanent jobs created by the museum at more than a thousand — “and that’s a lowball estimate.”

“People will visit from around the world to see the original Darth Vader mask and Norman Rockwell paintings,” he said.

Entertainment and cultural leaders including Los Angeles County Museum of Art Director Michael Govan, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures leader Kerry Brougher and DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg gathered before the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in November to show their support for Lucas’ project.

“This is a real triumph for the city of L.A., and this will be a transformative opportunity for L.A.,” Katzenberg said Tuesday after learning of Lucas’ decision. “First and foremost for our residents, who are going to have an outstanding cultural, iconic new force here — the force will be with us — and I think for tourism, and for the continued, extraordinary transformation of downtown Los Angeles, and for Exposition Park and the other museums it will be joining.”

Lucas, 72, has spent years trying to erect a museum for his art collection, which consists of about 10,000 paintings and illustrations including works by Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and R. Crumb, along with Hollywood memorabilia from films such as “Star Wars” and “The Ten Commandments.” In 2009 he set his sights near his home turf in San Francisco but faced community opposition from the city’s Presidio Trust about building in the historic park. Lucas then aimed for Chicago, Hobson’s hometown, but encountered resistance from Friends of the Parks about a downtown site along Lake Michigan.

The newest proposals, both featuring designs by Chinese architect Ma Yansong, were aesthetically similar but seemingly opposite in other respects. One was a remote, four-acre site on a breezy island in the middle of San Francisco Bay, beautiful but accessible only by bridge and ferry; the other was a seven-acre location in public transit-friendly, museum-heavy Exposition Park near Lucas’ alma mater, USC.

Exposition Park could become the Central Park of Los Angeles, Garcetti said, adding that Lucas has expressed interest in helping to guide a master plan for the swiftly evolving area, already home to the California Science Center, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California African American Museum. Plans for the new museum, which will rise along Vermont Avenue on land now covered by parking lots, will include underground parking.

“We have a new football stadium being built, the Coliseum being redone with more than $200 million in upgrades, and the science center is building a whole new building to permanently house the space shuttle and its rockets,” Garcetti said, also noting the proximity to the Expo light rail line and bus lines. The Lucas Museum, he said, “will be the jewel in the crown.”

The museum board called Exposition Park “a magnet for the region and accessible from all parts of the city.” It also cited the location “surrounded by more than 100 elementary and high schools, one of the country’s leading universities as well as three other world-class museums.”

The Lucas Museum will further expand the art museum landscape in greater L.A., which has become a global hot spot for art production. The Broad museum opened in late 2015 in downtown L.A., across the street from the Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum-scale Hauser Wirth & Schimmel gallery opened in L.A.’s Arts District less than a year ago, and the former Santa Monica Museum of Art will reopen in the Arts District this fall, renamed the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the non-collecting Main Museum made a soft debut in downtown’s Old Bank District in October.

“There’s an understanding of L.A.’s growing cultural influence and growing and diverse audiences for museums here,” LACMA’s Govan said Tuesday. “We ended 2016 with over 1.5 million visitors.” He said the Lucas Museum will present visual culture from a different point of view, one that “makes so much sense in a city known equally for art and for film.”

Philanthropist and Broad museum founder Eli Broad called the Lucas Museum “one of the most important cultural and tourist additions to our city in the last 25 years.”

“I spoke to both George Lucas and Mellody personally about our great success at the Broad,” the philanthropist said. “We’ve had over 1 million visitors since we opened in 2015, and I’d expect the attendance at the Lucas Museum will be equal or even succeed that.”

Art historian Don Bacigalupi, formerly president and executive director of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark., will serve as founding president of the Lucas Museum. He and Lucas still face the possibility of the kind of community scrutiny the project encountered in San Francisco and Chicago, but officials remain optimistic. Groundbreaking is planned before year’s end, a spokesman said, with the opening targeted for 2021.

“We have exciting work ahead,” Bacigalupi said.

Production has begun on Disney’s “Magic Camp,” a live-action comedy starring Adam Devine (“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” “Pitch Perfect”), Gillian Jacobs (“Community,” “Girls”) and Emmy® and Golden Globe® winner Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent,” “The Larry Sanders Show”) directed by Mark Waters (“Bad Santa 2,” “Mean Girls”). When preparations begin for the end-of-summer magic contest between rival teams of campers, Andy and his team of ragtag misfits must go head to head with Darkwood and her campers. Additionally, the original theatrical version of the film will release digitally Feb. 21 and on Blu-ray March 7.

Fans are invited to warm up those vocal cords and set sail with an all-new sing-along version of “Moana” launching in more than 2,000 theaters nationwide on Jan. 27 and exclusively at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre on Jan. 20.

“Moana” audiences were swept away by the film’s original songs and score from a dynamic team that includes Tony®-, Emmy®- and Grammy®-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda (Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning “Hamilton,” Tony-winning “In the Heights”), Mark Mancina (“Tarzan,” Broadway’s “The Lion King”) and Opetaia Foa‘i (founder and lead singer of the award-winning world music band Te Vaka).

The sing-along version of “Moana” includes the full feature film with on-screen lyrics, so audiences can belt out the words to their favorite songs, such as the Golden Globe®-nominated “How Far I’ll Go.” Moviegoers can check local listings for showtimes and theaters; the sing-along run will vary by location.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 56th animated feature opened domestically on Nov. 23, 2016, becoming the No. 2 Thanksgiving debut ever with $82 million. Typhoon Lagoon’s newest family raft ride Miss Adventure Falls

miss-adventure-falls-00

Today Disney has shared some new concept art and description for Typhoon Lagoon’s newest family raft ride Miss Adventure Falls.

Gather your crew and climb aboard for a thrilling, white-water voyage you won’t want to “Miss.”

Just beyond the pineapple fields of Crush ‘n’ Gusherawaits an all-new, family-raft attraction owned by Captain Mary Oceaneer—a sea-faring treasure hunter whose haul was caught in a rogue typhoon… and scattered across this tropical paradise years ago.

From your 4-person raft, feel a rush of excitement with family and friends as an aquatic conveyor belt chutes you into action. Then, hold on tight as you spy precious artifacts collected from all around the globe.

If you’re lucky enough, you may even meet the captain’s old diving partner—an Audio-Animatronic parrot who’s still hunting for treasures at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park to this day!

Miss Adventure Falls is due to open in Spring of 2017.

Romantic Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Rose Frame

Enchanted Rose Frame

A “Tale as Old as Time” is one of the most romantic Disney songs to me. There’s something about the wilting enchanted rose, and magic of seeing what’s within that just touches my heart. I feel like this Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Rose Frame by FramedMomentsGifts beautifully portrays all of my feelings about those magical moments in the movie.

You can have your very own enchanted rose displayed in this beautiful 3D frame. The frame is complete with lights for that extra magical effect. The delicate rose petals on the base of the frame remind us of the spell cast upon the rose for Beast’s curse. I also love the little silhouettes of Cogsworth and Lumiere added in. The designer will even personalize it with a small name of message if you would like too!

I think the Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Rose Frame would make a romantic Valentine’s Day gift, what about you?

If you happened to be browsing the RunDisney website recently (and we hope you are, those races are FUN!), you may have noticed some of the races have new names. No worries though, the staple races and half marathons have not changed, but there are a few smaller changes to note:

  • Dumbo Double Dare is now named the Disneyland Double Dare (Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend)
  • Lumiere’s Two-Course Challenge is now named the Disney Two-Course Challenge (Disney World Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend)
  • Mickey’s Holiday 5k is now named the Disney Fall Feast 5k (Disney World Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend)

Note that the events themselves have not changed, just their names.

Special thanks to our friends at Blog Mickey for pointing these out to us!

Restored Version Of Oswald’s “Poor Papa” Added To The Signature Collection Release Of “Pinocchio”

780w-463h_010917_oswald_poor_papa

Not that you needed any additional reason to add the new Walt Disney Signature Collection release of “Pinocchio” to your movie collection. It’s a classic story of a wooden puppet brought to life by the Blue Fairy—with the promise that he can become a real boy if he earns it—is one of the most cherished movies in the Disney catalog. But there’s even more to check out when it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 31 (Pinocchio arrives for the first time on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on January 10): A splendid restored print of “Poor Papa” (1927)—the first Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon. It’s necessary viewing for any fan of early Disney animation.

In 1927, while Walt was wrapping up the “Alice Comedies,” his distributor, Charles Mintz, brokered a deal with Universal for Walt to create a cartoon character. That new character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, would go on to star in 26 cartoons from the Disney studio. The series proved popular, and the character was the first to generate Disney merchandise—a candy bar, a stencil set, and a pin-back button!

“Poor Papa” was the first Oswald cartoon produced, but Mintz felt that Oswald looked “old” so the short was not released. The next Oswald short Walt and Ub produced, Trolley Troubles on September 5, 1927, debuted a redesigned younger version of Oswald. Given this second short’s positive critical reaction by the public, Universal and Mintz ultimately released Poor Papa on June 11, 1928. In this rather charming story, a bunch of storks bombard Oswald with bunnies until our hero figures out a way to thwart them.

The marvelous restoration is sourced from digital scans of a 16mm silent print that was made in 1930 for home use and discovered in the UK. This is one of three known surviving prints on this title.

Restoration was done in 2015 by Lowry Digital (a division of PrimeFocus Technologies) who have been entrusted with the restoration on many of Disney’s classic animation crown jewels.

A Closer Look into the New Menu at Planet Hollywood Observatory

phoshlj3683641

When the new Planet Hollywood Observatory at Disney Springs opens, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Disney released some more information regarding the menu items that guests can expect when they dine at the new eatery.

If you like modern italian food, then you’ll want to try the L.A. Lasagna, a fried take on the classic comfort food with Bolognese sauce, roasted garlic cream and tomato basil sauce. Or one of Fieri’s new Big Bite Burgers or Knuckle Sandwiches – the Bacon Mac-N-Cheese with his signature Donkey Sauce on a garlic-buttered brioche bun. You can have Lobster Feast Fra Diavolo with kicky spaghetti piled high in a whole lobster shell. A 10-ounce bone-in New York Strip Steak for two (add a whole steamed lobster if you please). And if you can’t decide, go for the High Roller Platter, a generous serving of guest favorites: Chicken Crunch, Texas Tostados, Buffalo Wings, Cheesy Spinach Dip and Peri-Peri Shrimp.

If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, then check out the healthful options that include salads like Citrus Kale with julienned broccoli, slivered brussels sprouts and cabbage, feta, grapefruit, oranges, cranberries and sunflower seeds with citrus-agave dressing. The Spinach & Berries salad features candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles and balsamic vinaigrette.

citruskalesalad407

The beverage menu focuses on Florida craft beers and hand-crafted cocktails made with fresh ingredients. And those souvenir serving glasses are back, including the Halley’s Comet cocktail served in a 45-ounce Planet-bowl.

When you’re ready to end your meal with something sweet,  you’ll find the amazing milkshakes will satisfy your sweet tooth (try the new Chocolate Comet or Strawberry Borealis), or  you can do a blind tasting of 12 flavors of house-made ice creams and sorbets, or finish with the Planet Melt Down, a chocolate hardshell dome that’s melted tableside with hot chocolate sauce to reveal double chocolate fudge cake, fresh strawberries and whipped cream.
