Disney Lorcana Bans Two Cards From Competitive Play, Marking a New Chapter in the Game’s Evolution

Disney Lorcana, the enchanting trading card game from Ravensburger, has made a significant move by issuing its first official card bans from competitive play. The game’s developers announced that two cards — Hiram Flaversham, Toymaker and the item Fortisphere — will no longer be permitted in core constructed formats. However, both cards will still be playable in casual and alternative game modes.

The announcement came via a post on Lorcana’s official website this past Tuesday. In an interview with Polygon, game design manager and lead game designer Steve Warner provided further insight into the decision. According to Warner, the bans are not just a reaction to balance concerns, but also a natural step in Lorcana’s ongoing development as a competitive card game.

“As with any trading card game that grows over time, certain card combinations may eventually create unintended gameplay issues,” Warner told Polygon. Since its debut in 2022, Lorcana has amassed a library of around 1,400 cards — and with that growth, some problematic synergies have emerged.

The issues centered primarily around Hiram Flaversham, a card that allowed players to rapidly draw cards and cycle through their deck, creating a substantial advantage. When paired with Fortisphere, the strategy became overly dominant. Decks using this combo posted win rates significantly above average, prompting concerns about game balance and fairness in competitive settings.

Warner emphasized that decisions like this reflect Lorcana’s maturation as a serious competitive platform. “Bans are a tool that allow us to preserve the health of the meta,” he explained, underscoring the importance of maintaining a diverse and enjoyable environment for all players.

With this first round of bans, Lorcana enters a new phase — one where balancing the evolving metagame becomes a key part of the design team’s responsibility. For dedicated players, it’s a reminder that the world of Lorcana will continue to grow, adapt, and surprise.

Warner emphasized, “We look at the tournament reports; we look at the data from events; from players; we talk to stores; we have competitive players [that we work with]; we have social players that all have friends and are part of the community. That gives us a lot of insight as to what’s going on, what’s really bothering players, and what’s causing some strife. […] We watch and we talk and we consider and we want to be very deliberate about our choices.”

Ravensburger announced these major changes on their website, inviting players to an Ask Me Anything with Steve Warner on April 8th at 3PM PST. Hiram and Fortisphere are the first cards to be banned in Disney Lorcana. With the banning of these cards, gameplay will certainly shift in the coming days and months as players make adjustments to the new competitive environment.

New Permit Filed for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Guitar Repainting as Muppet Reimagining Looms

A new construction permit has been filed for the giant guitar outside Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, providing more detailed information on work we already knew was coming. Back in February, Disney filed an initial permit for repainting the iconic instrument. This updated Notice of Commencement builds upon that, outlining more specifics about the process and scope.

According to the new permit, the work calls for the contractor to “sand, apply one coat of primer and two coats HP [high performance] finish,” in addition to “spray the body of the guitar” and “scaffold [the] guitar with one layer of scrim.” While this detailed language suggests a more involved effort than a simple touch-up, the scope still appears to be limited to repainting—not a complete reimagining or replacement of the structure.

Though Disney has announced plans to retheme Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster into a Muppets-themed attraction starring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, the guitar repaint seems to be a standalone project for now. However, it’s possible that once the fresh paint is applied, the guitar could re-emerge with a new color scheme inspired by the vibrant promotional poster for the upcoming Muppets overlay. That poster features a psychedelic swirl of colors, music notes, and flowers decorating a stretch limo driven by Dr. Teeth himself, with the license plate reading “MUPP3TS.”

As of now, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster remains open, and no official closing date has been announced for the reimagining. But with nearby attractions like the Sunset Showcase Theater already transitioning—soon to debut Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After—the transformation of Sunset Boulevard is clearly underway. For now, guests can expect to see the guitar receive a fresh coat of paint, with bigger changes likely to follow in the not-so-distant future.

Woody’s Lunch Box Finally Gets Some Shade in Toy Story Land

After more than three years in the making, guests visiting Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios can now enjoy a long-awaited addition—covered seating at Woody’s Lunch Box! The first section of the new shade structure has officially opened, providing some much-needed relief from the sweltering Florida sun while diners enjoy their snacks and sandwiches in style.

This whimsical new covering fits right in with the playful Toy Story theme, appearing as though it was assembled from Andy’s own erector set. On top, the ever-watchful Green Army Men keep an eye out over Toy Story Land, adding that extra touch of immersive storytelling that Disney fans know and love.

Woody’s Lunch Box has been a fan-favorite quick-service location since Toy Story Land opened, serving up crave-worthy comfort food and breakfast delights. From the savory BBQ Brisket Melt to the creative “Totchos” (that’s tater tot nachos, for the uninitiated), the menu offers something for every toy in the toy box. Breakfast lovers can start their day with a hearty Breakfast Bowl of potato barrels, eggs, and smoked brisket gravy, while those with a sweet tooth can snag “The Clawwww!” Lunch Box Tart—filled with key lime curd and topped with colorful sugary decorations.

Plant-based and allergy-friendly options are also widely available, including items like the Toasted “Cheddar” Sandwich and gluten/wheat allergy-friendly sandwiches. And for guests looking to cool down, the Frozen Mystic Portal Punch served in an Alien Sipper is a popular souvenir drink, as is the grown-up favorite, Grown-Up’s Lemonade with cherry vodka.

Currently, only the right-hand side of the new shade structure is open to guests, with the left side still under construction. Disney has posted a warning during Mobile Order that seating is limited due to ongoing work, and Cast Members are restricting the seating area to only those picking up mobile orders. While that may temporarily limit availability, it’s exciting to see progress finally being made on this long-anticipated upgrade.

Once fully complete, the covered seating will greatly enhance the dining experience at Woody’s Lunch Box, providing a more comfortable and enjoyable spot to refuel during your Toy Story Land adventures. Until then, keep an eye out for those Green Army Men and maybe snag a Mobile Order slot—because with that Florida heat, this new shady spot is bound to be popular!
