Why Adults are Obsessed With Sailing Disney Cruise Line Without Kids

Disney Cruise Line Fall 2018 Itinerary

You may be shocked to hear how many adults sail on Disney Cruise Line without children. One couple is getting ready for their 100th cruise this fall.

Joanne and Gerald “John” Gerrity booked their 100th Disney cruise in September. Surprisingly they’re not sailing with young children. For that matter, they’re not sailing with any children at all. Why do grown-ups have such a soft spot for Disney Cruise Line? “Quality. The quality is there, the food, the cleanliness,” said John. “The crew,” added Joanne, 53. “They are so friendly.”

Why Adults are Obsessed With Sailing Disney Cruise Line Without Kids

Disney currently has four cruise ships, and three more vessels are expected between 2021 and 2023. With an total capacity of more than 21,000 passengers among the seven vessel, each carrying between 2,700 and 4,000 tourists. DCL definitely has more than one demographic in mind. It’s estimated about a fifth of adult passengers come onboard the ships without children, and they are a growing in rapid numbers, especially on sailings in mid-September when children are recently back in school.

Disney’s strength is catering to all members of the family. Several ship features are designed to give parents time off, such as an adults-only pool, upscale spas, nightclubs, romantic restaurants, and after-hours lounges such as the popular Champagne bar Pink on the 4,000-passenger Disney Dream. But they play well with other grown-ups, too.

Select “Port Adventures” are reserved for adults, such as a Bacardi rum tour in San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Castaway Cay, Disney’s pristine private Bahamas island, a patch of beach is reserved for those aged 18 and up, and a 5-kilometer run is popular with adults. Others love the Disney musicals or the first-run movie showings in digital 3-D. Some even say they’re in it for appearances by characters such as Disney princesses, superheroes, and, of course, Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Why Adults are Obsessed With Sailing Disney Cruise Line Without Kids

You may be wondering how are Disney cruises relaxing when you’re surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of screaming kids?

“We get asked that question,” said Joanne Gerrity. “Neither of us is bothered by them. It’s not the kid anyway—it’s the parent who’s the problem.” John, her husband, added, “On Disney Cruise Line, the children are generally better behaved than they are on some of the other lines. I think they are more content with the kids’ program.”

There are also kids-only and adults-only areas. “They keep them separate,” said John. “We don’t find we have any trouble with that; probably not as much as anywhere else you’d go, like in a public restaurant.” Plus, the Gerritys don’t drink alcohol and don’t care that there’s no casino onboard Disney ships. Typically they’re in bed by 10 p.m.

Joanne added that she and John enjoy watching interactions between the crew and the kids onboard, especially in the dining rooms. “They come along and cut their food. They hug them. It’s really warm to watch that,” she said.

Even among premium cruise lines, Disney has some of the industry’s highest ratings. It’s consistently praised for quality and attention to detail. In February,  Cruisers’ Choice Awards honored Disney with eight first-place honors—outranking traditionally high-end brands such as Celebrity and Princess cruises in the mid-sized and large ships categories, and taking top nods for its shore excursions, service, and cabins, among other things.

Why Adults are Obsessed With Sailing Disney Cruise Line Without Kids

As they ready for their 100th voyage, the Gerritys certainly have no desire to sidestep the Disney magic. After one particularly memorable cruise, when the high school sweethearts celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, John had a tattoo inked on his upper right arm featuring the cruise line’s red, white, and blue logo, complete with Mickey Mouse head.

Kids or no kids Disney Cruise Line certainly has something for everyone.

Are you ready to leave the kids behind and hit the high seas?

Disney Channel Relaunching Docu-Series ‘Bug Juice’

Disney Channel Relaunching Docu-Series 'Bug Juice'

It’s been nearly 20 years since the 90’s camp series “Bug Juice” was on the Disney Channel. It was Disney’s first ever original unscripted show based on the premise of being a docu-series that followed kids during the summer at Camp Waziyatah.

The Disney Channel is returning to Camp Waziyatah for a modern day reboot of  “Bug Juice.” The new version will capture the authentic adventures of a group of kids age 10-12 as they head to summer camp, join in exciting and challenging outdoor activities, establish tight bonds with bunkmates and create unforgettable memories. Production is currently underway in Waterford, Maine, for a scheduled debut in early 2018.

Named after the juice drinks often served at summer camps, “Bug Juice” marked Disney Channel‘s foray into original, unscripted television and was recognized for its relatable stories and genuine portrayal of the summer camp experience.

“‘Bug Juice’ took viewers on a journey of adventure and self-discovery. Now, nearly two decades later, we are thrilled to be back in Maine at Camp Waziyatah with the creative team from Evolution Media and many of the same crew members who produced the original series,” said Susette Hsiung, executive vice president, Production, Disney Channels Worldwide.

“Bug Juice” is produced by Evolution Media, which also created and produced the original version of series and has been at the helm of other popular unscripted kids content for Disney Channel, including “Movie Surfers,” “Totally in Tune” and “Totally Hoops.” It is executive produced by Douglas Ross, Alex Baskin, Tina Gazzero Clapp and Toni Gallagher. Ross, Clapp and Gallagher were all involved in the production of the original series, which premiered on February 28, 1998, and ran for three seasons.

The first season of the original “Bug Juice” took place at Camp Waziyatah; the second season was filmed at Camp Highlander in Horse Shoe, North Carolina; and the third season took place at Brush Ranch Camp in Tererro, New Mexico.

Do you remember this show from the 90s? Are you excited to see it return?

Aquatica Photo Tour and Quick Queue Review

Aquatica Photo Tour and Quick Queue Review

Aquatica, SeaWorld Orlando’s Water Park, is a great place to cool off during the scorching heat of summer.  Offering Quick Queue, a front of the line option for popular water rides, you now have more time for relaxing waterside.  Here is our Aquatica Photo Tour and Quick Queue Review.

Start your day at Aquatica by getting your bearings.  There are no paper park maps.  You will find large maps posted throughout the park to let you know where you are and how to find your next destination.  You will want to get a locker for the day to store personal items such as electronics and credit cards.  Lockers run $15-$20 per day depending on locker size.  Aquatica offers meal deals, refillable cups and Aquatica’s Quick Queue.  An all day meal deal will run you $25 for adults and $15 for children.  The refillable cup has a variety of options based on the number of cups purchased.  Quick Queue is the new front of the line option and will cost $25 per day, per person.

Lounge chairs are available throughout the park.  Arrive early if you are looking for a large shaded lounge area with an umbrella.  Food options range from an outdoor cook-out with barbecued ribs and chicken to Grab-and-Go options such as empenadas, hot dogs, and sandwiches.

Aquatica’s Quick Queue is the way to go if you want to enjoy as many water rides as possible, and as often as you would like, throughout the day.  Six of the most popular experiences are included with Quick Queue.  The entrance of each participating ride is equipped with a General Queue to the left, and Quick Queue to the right.  At $25 per person, we found it to be worth the cost for the signifcantly reduced wait times.

Here are the Water Slide Rides included with Aquatica’s Quick Queue:

HooRoo Run and Walhalla Wave are quite popular.  The Walhalla Wave was our family favorite.  This popular ride was our longest wait at 13 minutes.

Taumata Racer was a quick 3 minute walk to the top, and a fast race down to the bottom on a flat mat with a curved front.

Whanau Way is a tube ride for two people.  Smallest person must ride in front.  Omaka Rocka is one person tube ride and therefore experiences a longer wait time….unless you have Quick Queue.  We rode each of these rides with Whanau Way taking 5 minutes and Omaka Rocka in 6 minutes.

The most intriguing Water Slide Ride we encountered was Ihu’s Breakaway Falls.  We rode this one 3 times and each time we completed in under 4 minutes.  Once you arrive at the top, you are placed into a tube.  The bottom will then come out from under you and before you know it you are at the bottom!  This is a really fast ride.  If you are a thrill rider then this is your water slide!

Not included with Aquatica’s Quick Queue:

Tassie Twister and Dolphin Plunge are quite popular.  Tassie Twister is a one or two person tube ride with a wacky twist.  Climb to the top from and island situated in the middle of Loggerhead Lane Lagoon.  Your spinning adventure is a fun and fast ride.   We recommend you ride Dolphin Plunge immediately upon arrival as this will be the longest wait.  You will pass through a clear tube where Dolphins are swimming.  How fun is that?

Not really into water slide rides?  No problem.  Grab a spot near one of the family areas.  If you have young school-age children they will love the Walkabout Waters and Roa’s Rapids.  Great places to have a more relaxed day would be at Cutback Cove and Big Surf Shores where the sound of the wave pool is sure to lull you to sleep if  you are so inclined.  Your preschoolers will love playing at Kata’s Kookaburra Cove with water spray features and slides geared specifically for this age group.

Surfboard displays provide fun photo ops while signs lead the way to all areas within the park.

Aquatica is a great way to relax and enjoy time with family.  There is something here for every age group to enjoy.  We recommend a visit to Aquatica to escape the heat of summer while having a fabulous time sunning, swimming and sliding.  If your budget allows, we recommend Quick Queue for front of the line privileges that will truly enhance your day and will allow you to make the best use of your time.

Are you planning a visit to Aquatica?  Please leave your comments in the box below.
