POTC: Dead Men Tell No Tales

POTC: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sailed into the top spot at the box office this Memorial Day Weekend. The new film brought in a three-day total of $62.2 million and four-day holiday weekend total of $77 million.

The Pirates franchise has become a hot commodity overseas and the opening weekend numbers reflect this. The movie, which was released in select overseas countries last week, brought in a large $208.4 million for the three-day weekend. Globally, the movie is expected to gross over $300 million for the long, four-day weekend.

The $77 million Pirates is brought in stateside is lower than what film producers and Disney were anticipating. This is the lowest opening weekend for a movie in the Pirates franchise other than the original movie. The original Pirates movie brought in $46 million it’s opening weekend. The award for the highest opening of the Pirates franchise goes to Dead Man’s Chest which brought in an impressive $135.6 million it’s opening weekend.

The total cost to bring Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to life was $230 million.

The “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” Press Conference

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" Press Conference

The day after watching a screening of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” I got the wonderful opportunity to attend the press conference. It was a series of small, quick visits from the cast, the directors and Jerry Bruckheimer.

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" Press Conference

First up was Capitan Salazar, Javier Bardem. One obvious thing right away, he is quite a good-looking man! No, really – I wasn’t expecting to be taken aback by that, but I was. The first question was, of course, Penelope Cruz (his wife) being in “Stranger Tides” and how did that effect anything? Apparently Javier went to the set a few times when Penelope was on set. He was delighted by the grandeur of the set, and mentioned to Jerry how he’d love to be a part of something like that. Not that he was asking for a job, just that he knew if was a part of that it was going to be good.

When Javier spoke about playing Salazar, he really lit up. For his character he researched Spanish pirates from that time and found that most came from the south of Spain, so that is where his accent came from. The character is complicated because Salazar puts pride and honor above everything, even food or drink, when he is alive. When Salazar is dead he is driven by the “pain of his rage”, which I found so tragic. He did have he kids on set – “But only when Salazar was alive, never when he was dead” Good Dad, right there.

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" Press Conference

Next we had the ‘kids’ – Kaya Scodelario (Carina) and Brenton Thwaites (Henry). Coming into this established series as the new kids, Kaya was intimidated and blown away by the talent she got to work with – Brenton was a fan of the Pirates movies from the get go, and was very happy to be on set. They both had interesting opinions of the talent they got to work with. Brenton said that keeping up with Johnny Depp and his improv was so much fun, and all the takes that he would do. Kaya said that it was confusing working with Javier, because he played this terrifying character but when the cameras weren’t rolling he’s brilliant and “fluffy.” These kids have both been in the business for a while, and hopefully they continue for some time. They are both quite talented and very down-to-Earth.

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" Press Conference

Geoffrey Rush as Barbosa was our next visitor. Let me tell you, his baritone voice is not an affectation or a character choice, that’s his speaking voice. Apparently Barbosa was only supposed to be in the first Pirates movie and that’s it. But as shooting continued, they decided to make him a part of the overall series. At one point, he sat down with Terry Rossio (writer) about what they could do with Barbosa’s character and how they could stretch it. I think perhaps that’s why the choices were made for this Pirates film and Barbosa (no spoilers!). One thing I found interesting is whenever he gets fan mail, he handwrites responses to every one. What a guy!!

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" Press Conference

Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are the directors If you haven’t heard of them, don’t worry about it, they are fairly new to the blockbuster scene. They directed “Kon Tiki” which was nominated for an Oscar. They grew up together in Norway watching films, and to get ready to direct this Pirates they re-watched the first Pirates to get the feel of the series. This is the first big budget film they had ever done, so getting ready for such a big film with such big actors listening to input from everyone on set was important for them. In getting Javier Bardem, they knew they had to get a strong actor for this strong character. They mentioned that Salazar is “the matador when he’s alive and the wounded bull when he’s dead” I thought that was a poetic way of putting it.

The best part of the conversation was how they got Paul McCartney. Originally they wanted to bring back Keith Richards, but he was unavailable because he was on tour. So they sat down with Johnny Depp and made a list of rockers they would have liked in Keith’s place – Paul was on the top of the list. The directors began to lament on how they were going to try to contact Sir Paul when Johnny realized he had him in his phone. “Want me to text him?” And the rest is history.

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" Press Conference

The day concluded with a sit down with Jerry Bruckheimer. He told us about the beginnings of Pirates – when the script for a pirates movie was brought to him through Dick Cook , he immediately went to Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio where they came up with the pirates that turn into skeletons in the moonlight idea. What was the most interesting was the fact that the studio, upon seeing the dailies of the film freaked out at Johnny’s interpretation of Jack Sparrow. We have all heard that he modeled the characters after Keith Richards, he apparently also had a dash of Pepe Le Pew as well. Basically, Jerry told the studio to chill out and let the movie be, and look what came out!

Coming away all these years from the first Pirates to here, the fifth, Jerry learned a lot from film to film. He told us, “It’s always how can we make these stories more effective, how can we add more interesting characters, how can we layer the characters?” This time around they decided to simplify the plot and make the film shorter (20 minutes shorter than the previous one). He didn’t want the audience to suffer ‘Jack Sparrow fatigue’. I don’t think that time will be coming around any time soon.

It was obvious from everyone in this press conference that they are all very proud of this installment of the Pirates franchise. It’s a lovely addition to the series and I do hope all fans get the opportunity to catch this film in the theater. It’s a wonderful way to kick off the summer!

“Bambi” 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

"Bambi" 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

The 75th anniversary of Bambi is this year, and Disney is celebrating by re-releasing this classic film on Blu-Ray with tons of bonus features. I got the wonderful opportunity to be invited to the Disney lot in Burbank to kick-off this release.

"Bambi" 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

"Bambi" 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

There were photo opportunities and great pictures hung in the halls.

"Bambi" 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

The big surprise of the whole day was getting to meet Peter Behn and Donnie Dunagan, the voices of young Thumper and Bambi.

"Bambi" 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

Brought up many times is how many fan letters they get per week by children all over the world. It’s very obvious how much the two men appreciated their contribution toward this classic film and toward “Mr. Disney” as well. The environmental statement from the film is something both of them are very proud of and also was something Mr. Disney was proud of as well.

I also got a copy of the 75th anniversary Blu-Ray release of “Bambi.” Besides being able to watch this awesome Disney classic whenever I want to, the bonus features are great! Here’s a break down of the bonus features:

Studio Stories: Bambi
A 1942 recording of Walt Disney talking about the lead into and the production of “Bambi.” It’s a real treat getting to listen to the man himself talk about the details of this beloved movie.

Deleted Scenes:
If you ‘play all’ you can get an introduction from animator Floyd Norman. The deleted scenes consist of sketches and voice over of actors recreating scripts.
One is – Bambi and Snow the other is The Grasshopper.

The Bambi Effect:
Walt’s vision of how his artists treated “Bambi” – from Tyrus Wong’s background art to the study of actual animals for realistic movement – is what blazed the trail for how animation is treated for years after, and to this day.

Bambi Fawn Facts:
Fun facts about deer, skunks and bunnies!

Classic Bonus Features:
From the DVD release of “Bambi” in 2011, these bonus feature might be familiar to most fans.

Deleted Scenes:
Two Leaves, Bambi Stuck On A Reed, Winter Grass. Sketches of possible scenes recreated with voice over artists that didn’t make the final story cut.

Deleted Song:
“Twitterpated” of beautiful song originally scored for the film, that also didn’t make the cut.

The Making of Bambi: A Prince is Born:
An awesome 6 part series covering every single aspect of the making of this stunning film. From finding the right actors to voice the characters to the score of the film, any “Bambi” lover will enjoy every single chapter of these behind the scenes

Tricks of the Trade:
The idea and execution of Walt’s multi-plane camera

Inside the Disney archives:
A glimpse into the archives on the Disney lot to find the hidden “Bambi” artwork from the film (some had never been released)

The Old Mill (Short film)
The classic Disney animated film that started the realistic animation process that was used in “Bambi”

I hope you go out and add the blu-ray “Bambi” to your film collection. It’s well worth owning and revisiting for years to come!

Adult Beverages Now Available at All Star Food Courts

All Star Adult Drinks

All Star Adult Drinks

On a recent visit to Walt Disney World, we uncovered something that may be of interest for those that like an adult beverage at the end of a busy park day.  It would appear that the food courts at two of Disney’s All Star Resorts have begun selling adult beverages.   Here’s a look at what we found at All Star Movies Resort.

Alcohol Food court

The beverages can be found in the section called the Rialto which sells ice cream and desserts.

All Star Alcoholic Drinks

There are two adult milkshakes on offer, The Curtain Call which is a chocolate milkshake with candied bacon and Knob Creek Bourbon and Velvet Ropes which is a vanilla milkshake with strawberries, sprinkles and Frangelico Liquer. Both of the milkshakes retail for $12.00

Here’s a closer look at Velvet Ropes.

All Star Sports

For those brunching at All Star Movies, there were also two additional alcoholic drinks being served up:  Mimosa and a Bloody Mary.

Adult Drinks All Star Movies

The Mimosa features orange juice and Michelle Brut Sparkling Wine and retails for $10 and the Bloody Mary is made with Skyy Vodka and retails for $8.25.

So what does this mean for All Music and All Star Sports? For now, it would appear that All Star Music is following suit as a quick look at the menu online uncovered the same milkshakes as All Star Movies but with slightly different names:

Strawberry Fields: Strawberry Milkshake with Frangelico topped with Whipped Cream and Sprinkles $11.50

The King Milkshake:  Chocolate Milkshake with Knob Creek Bourbon topped with Candied Bacon $11.50

At the moment, the adult options only seem to be cropping up at All Star Movies and All Star Music.  The End Zone Food Court at All Star Sports does not appear to be currently offering them.

Guests visiting either resort will also want to remember that in addition to the Food Court items listed above, both resorts do offer a bar where additional libations served up on the outside of the main buildings near the swimming pools.   Here’s a quick look at some of the additional cocktail options you can find at  All Star Movies.

Disney outside drinks

No word yet on whether the alcoholic milkshakes are a permanent fixture to the menus at both quick service locations or a trial.  We also don’t have word yet if All Star Sports will follow suit.  Watch this space and we’ll keep you updated as and when we hear more about this exciting new offering.

Construction Update for The Edison Disney Springs

The Edison Disney Springs

The Edison Disney Springs

Easily the most hotly anticipated Disney Springs opening of the year, nightspot The Edison is finally taking shape with the front facade seemingly near completion.

The Edison With Disney Springs

Work on the front smokestack also seems to be nearly finished.

The Edison Disney Springs

Originally slated to open at The Landing at Disney Springs in late 2016, the property was marred with delays with a Spring 2107 opening announced last year which was then pushed further to a Late 2017 opening date which was announced earlier this Spring.

It would appear from shots taken by Chip this week that there is still work to be completed on the rear and sides of the building.

The Edison Disney Springs

The construction walls remain up on the front and sides of the building.

Here’s an image of what The Edison will look like as it nears completion.

The Edison Disney Springs

More than likely The Edison will be worth the wait and will add a steampunk-themed air of excitement to the evening scene at Disney Springs. Themed after a 1920’s period electric company, the club will have 35 ft ceilings and will be filled with exciting spaces that will host an eclectic mix of Cabaret style music and performers, craft cocktails and Classic American Cuisine with a twist.   From palm readers to contortionists to vaudeville acts, you’ll never really know what’s just around the corner.

Official word has not been given regarding a specific opening date but check back with us for the latest news and updates regarding The Edison.

Help For Experiencing Shorter Lines In Pandora for Disney Resort Guests

End of the Line

End of the Line

“Pandora – The World of Avatar” opened Saturday to huge crowds and even larger wait times. We reported on guests seeing up to 4 hours in line for the new attraction “Flight of Passage“. A FastPass+ reservation is always your best bet for a shorter wait time; but what if that is not an option? Today I wanted to bring Disney on-site resort guests a tip to making their visit to Pandora a little less crazy during these initial days of it being open.

Pandora Lines

From now until July 4th Disney is offering Extra Magic Hours to enjoy Pandora – The World of Avatar from 11:00 pm until 1:00 am to all guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels. During these dates Disney will close the attraction lines of Na’vi River Journey and Flight of Passage somewhere between 8:30 to 9:00 pm (this time will depend on the current wait time). They will allow all guests currently in line to make their way through and enjoy the attraction.

Help For Experiencing Shorter Lines In Pandora for Disney Resort Guests

Starting at 11:00 pm Pandora attractions are re-opened to Disney resort guests for Extra Magic Hours until 1:00 am. It should be noted that there has still been lines forming outside the attraction queues before 11:00 pm so you might want to arrive before then to enjoy shorter wait times.

Still Not A Perfect Solution

We are also seeing that Disney is not requiring offsite resort guests to leave Pandora once Extra Magic Hours begin if they are already inside Pandora. They are currently being allowed to remain to shop, eat, and enjoy the surroundings. Disney may change this practice at any time.

Offsite guests however, are not allowed to ride the attractions. Magic Bands must be scanned to confirm on-site resort guests status. Offsite guests also may not enter Pandora after Extra Magic Hours begin.

Even with these cautions in place, if you are a Disney resort guest and can stay up late, being at Pandora’s Extra Magic Hour once the attractions queues have emptied seems like a good plan to shorten your attraction wait times. You will still see wait times but not as significant as during the day.

Will you be visiting during the evening Extra Magic Hours to Pandora – The World of Avatar?

Ready to experience Pandora for yourself? There are still fantastic 2017 Summer and Fall packages to be had. Fill out our form below to receive your FREE quote from one of our Authorized Disney Vacation Planners.
