A Wrinkle in Time

If you love star-studded movies, then you are in for a treat with Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time! The Disney adaption of this novel by Madeline L’Engle features everyone from the likes of Oprah Winfrey to Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine.

The plot of the story revolves around a teenager named Meg (played by Storm Reid) who tries to find her father (played by Chris Pine) who has gone missing. Meg enlists the help of three supernatural beings on her search: Mrs. Who (played by Mindy Kaling), Mrs. Whatsit (played by Witherspoon), and Mrs. Which (played by Winfrey) . Meg is transported through a tesseract thanks to the trio of ladies who “wrinkle” time and space.

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time is directed by Ana DuVernay who previously directed Selma. Jennifer Lee, who wrote Frozen, wrote the script. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on March 9, 2018.

Coronado Springs has already begun its lengthy two year expansion. We know that a new 15-story tower will be added overlooking lake Lago Dorado. New waterfront dining and retail shopping have also been announced for the resort. Today BlogMickey has reported that permits were filed that gives us a better understanding of what that will look like.

The submitted plans show that the restaurant is not just a waterfront location, but in fact will be in the middle of lake Lago Dorado! In order for guests to access the new location, three walkways will be constructed over the water to connect it with the rest of the property.

The entire Coronado Springs project is scheduled for completion in Summer 2019.

Disney Contributes to Florida GOP Governor Hopefuls

The Florida Governor’s election is well over a year away, however the Walt Disney World Company has placed their financial support behind several GOP hopefuls. Florida Grown, a committee supporting Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, has been the recipient of a total of $400,648 in donations since 2015. The Walt Disney Company has also donated $70,000 to a committee run by state Sen. Jack Latvala and $35,000 to a new committee set up by House Speaker Richard Corcoran.

Putnam is the only one of the three who have officially declared candidacy for the governor position. Latvala and Corcoran have both said they are seriously considering runs.

According to the Orlando Sentinel article, early donations to different potential candidates are not unusual for large corporations, said UCF political science professor Aubrey Jewett. “It’s all about hedging your political bets,” Jewett said. “The game is sort of understood that it’s played that way. As long as you give to everyone, then no one gets upset with you.”

Disney officials would not agree to an interview, but in a statement, Jacquee Wahler, vice president of Walt Disney World Resorts, wrote, “We support candidates who understand issues important to our company and demonstrate strong support for business and tourism in Florida.”

So far Disney has not made any contributions to the three major Democratic candidates already in the race – Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum, former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham and Winter Park businessman Chris King.

Disney foodies mark you calendars. As we inch ever closer to the 2017 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, Disney is slowly starting to reveal details of the festival line up. Today it was announced that the ever popular culinary demonstrations are making a comeback and sessions will be available to book beginning July 20th.

Each demonstration provides guests with an opportunity to expand their culinary skill set and can cover a wide range of topics from wine tastings, to learning how to make your own sushi to chocolate workshops. The possibilities are endless.

Though Disney hasn’t yet revealed the topics of the demonstrations covered this year, we do know that the workshops sell out quickly so you’ll want book in your culinary seminar as close to the 20th as possible. Here’s some quick facts to help you in the planning process.

Seminars run through the duration of the festival (August 31st to November 13th).
Last year they were held Monday thru Thursdays at 2:30 pm and Fridays thru Sunday’s at 12.15pm and 2:30pm.
We also know that the cost of the workshops will be $17 per guest and does not include taxes or theme park admission (which is required).
Each workshop lasts approximately 45 minutes

We would expect an announcement on the content of these workshops to be released any day now so readers are encouraged to watch this space for the latest 2017 International Food & Wine Festival news and updates.

Additional Person Fee Increasing Across Walt Disney World Resorts For 2018 Stays

Most people don’t realize that Disney charges a fee if there are more than 2 adults booked per room at Disney Value, Moderate and Deluxe Resorts. This applies when there are more than 2 guests 18 or older booked in the room. This is not an uncommon practice in the hotel industry, but families rarely run into this fee as most travel with 2 adults plus kiddos. It should be said that Disney Deluxe Villas Resorts and Family Suites are exceptions to this rule.

We are now seeing that for reservations starting January 1, 2018, additional adult pricing will increase across all Walt Disney World resorts. This fee is per person and per night plus tax if 3rd and/or 4th person are 18+.

Here is the new pricing for the Additional Person Fee:

Value $15 (previously was $10)
Moderate $25 (previously was $15)
Deluxe $35 (previously was $25)

This change will only effect new bookings. It is possible that some reservations previously booked for 2018 will reflect the previous fee amounts.

Don’t you just love the ooey-gooey deliciousness that is a s’more? Maybe they make a bit of a mess but it’s totally worth it for that classic campfire snack! Disneyland is about to release their own twist on this beloved fire-side treat, with a S’mores Churro!

Disneyland’s S’mores Churro will make its début on July 17th, along with a selection of other Fantasmic-inspired treats. The graham cracker churro will be paired with side of marshmallow-chocolate dipping sauce to complete the classic s’mores flavor. The dipping sauce will be served in a cup, making this version less messy than a traditional s’more and easy to snack on while walking the park!

'Zootopia' Lawsuit Against Disney Dismissed

As we have been reporting, a lawsuit was filed against Disney for allegedly stealing the idea of the movie Zootopia. The suit was filed by Gary Goldman via Esplanade Productions. Goldman complained that he originally pitched the Zootopia idea to Disney and was turned down but they went on to produce the idea.

California Federal Judge, Michael Fitzgerald, ruled that Esplanade failed to include enough of Goldman’s evidence in their initial complaint and what was submitted was not sufficient to claim copyright infringement against Disney.

Here is the official order to dismiss from Judge Fitzgerald:

“Perhaps the most specific and detailed allegation is that the two protagonists present an odd pair — one a predator, the other prey, one optimistic, the other a cynical pessimist. But this is a cliché of the buddy cop genre. See, e.g., Men in Black (Columbia Pictures 1997) (streetwise, charming youngster is paired with a stodgy old coot); Rush Hour (New Line Cinema 1998) (straight-laced Hong Kong detective is paired with wisecracking, reckless LAPD detective); The Heat (20th Century Fox 2013) (straight-laced FBI agent is paired with an unconventional Boston cop). The differences between the character designs outnumber the similarities. Most obviously, almost none of the above pairings actually include the same animals. A hyena is not a fox (and in reality is a much larger animal than a fox) and a grizzly bear is not a water buffalo. Additionally, the Looney characters are unclothed while the Zootopia characters are all elaborately costumed. And the animation style itself is very different between the two sets of characters: whereas the Disney characters are typically cute and appealing, the Looney characters evoke a darker, seedier aesthetic… The two character designs bear little resemblance to one another.”

While the dismissal motion has been granted for Disney, it was “left to amend.” This means that Esplanade will have another chance to gather more evidence and the lawsuit may be revisited.

Set sail for Tokyo DisneySea, where you’ll find Disney Pirates Summer in full swing, inspired by the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. Make your way over to Mediterranean Harbor, where Captain Barbossa has taken over Porto Paradiso and is recruiting young scallywags for his crew as part of Pirates Summer Battle ‘Get Wet!’ Captain Jack Sparrow makes an appearance for an epic showdown against Barbossa that includes water, fire and a thrilling swordfight. Who will win this battle between rivals?

When you ride the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Tokyo Disneyland, you’ll also receive a special new treasure map. It’s up to you to solve the Pirates Mystery and discover three hidden treasures from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” “X” marks the spot!

This summer, you can also enjoy Disney Natsu Matsuri, a traditional Japanese festival with a touch of Disney magic. You can find Mickey and pals atop floats playing Japanese arrangements of your favorite Disney songs as part of Sansui! Summer Beat. Clap and sing along, and you might even get sprayed by water as the floats pass you by.

End your day with the Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights, which makes a glowing return with five new floats. For the first time in forever, Anna and Elsa join the parade from their icy castle. You’ll also see Cinderella in her pumpkin carriage and Prince Charming waiting for her in the castle ballroom, as well as the return of the enchanting “Beauty and the Beast” float with more twinkling LED lights.

Is a Mickey-themed Ride Coming to Walt Disney World?

We previously reported that the future of the Great Movie Ride was in question. Per permits obtained by Blog Mickey, it appears that the Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios will be closing to make room for “DHS Project M.” We also saw this tweet on Twitter:

So what does “DHS Project M” mean? From what we are hearing, this will be a new Mickey Mouse-themed ride. So, “DHS” refers to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and “Project M” means Project Mickey Ride? A Mickey-themed ride would be a first for any of the Disney Parks.

As you can see on copies of the permit below, the exact address of the Great Movie Ride is listed. Also important to point out is the completion date of October 31, 2019. It’s hard to be sure if this date is the projected opening day of this new attraction or just the completion date of work detailed in this permit.

Of course, nothing is official until Disney confirms it. Hopefully, with D23 Expo coming up this weekend, we will receive the official word one way or another. With rumors of the Great Movie Ride closing, talk about a Mickey-themed ride coming, and now a permit filed, I’d expect to see this rumor come to fruition.

Christmas in July Comes to Disney Springs

Don’t let the warm weather fool you. Christmas in July begins at Disney Springs this Saturday, July 15! What better time than now to get a jump start on your Christmas shopping with all the fabulous retailers throughout Disney Springs while you experience special holiday-themed treats, merchandise, and entertainment. Top it all with a visit with the jolly-fellow himself while enjoying your favorite Starbucks holiday beverage!

In July, The Art of Disney is featuring holiday inspired art with artist meet and greets, Dockside Margaritas is pouring the Snowflake Margarita, and Disney’s Days of Christmas is hosting a special meet and greet with Santa – dressed for the Florida heat. “Summer Santa” will be on hand for photographs 1:00pm to 10:00pm.

For this limited-time Disney Springs celebration, a DJ will be spinning Christmas-beats and Enjoy Your Face will be celebrating with holiday face painting designs. Even the Disney Springs fountains will be decked for the season.

Also, Starbucks in the Marketplace is offering their holiday themed drinks and you can stock up on sweets at Goofy’s Candy Company or Disney’s Candy Cauldron, featuring peppermint bark and gingerbread cookies. You’ll also find a few holiday-themed treats, including Santa Mickey and Minnie specialty apples and krispy treats, to delight children of all ages. Head over to AristoCrepes to indulge in a gingerbread crepe or a uniquely-shaped gingerbread cookie at Amorette’s Patisserie.

The special events continue in July with UNIQLO celebrating their 1-year anniversary with a Japanese Night Market inspired celebration. Now through July 30, 2017, guests can experience a taste of a traditional Japanese night market, complete with prize-winning games, special photo opportunities, origami and calligraphy classes, and more. This event is a first of its kind at UNIQLO, and special activities run from 7:00pm to 11:00pm daily. Visit UNIQLO’s event page event page for more information.

If you’re looking for a spot to relax before checking out our nighttime entertainment, multiple venues have enhanced their daily drink special offerings. Throughout the month of July, the bar located inside the House of Blues Restaurant & Bar will offer drink specials daily, from 11:30am to 5:00pm. We shared last week that STK Orlando had rolled out daily drink specials, and now Joffrey’s Tea Traders has also joined in on the fun. Stop by Tea Traders Café by Joffrey’s in the Landing between 4:00pm and 7:00pm daily to try discounted “spiked specialties,” including the Kahlua-Tini and Frozen Cappuccino with Bailey’s.
