Disney Partners with Lyft over Uber for Minnie Vans

By now, most of us are familiar with the Minnie Vans that have rolled out at Walt Disney World. Basically, they are Disney’s answer to ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft. They provide an easier alternative to the current forms of transportation such as the buses as they will pick you up and drop you off directly at any location on Disney property.

Even though the vehicles are driven and operated by Disney employees and not freelance drivers as Lyft and Uber are, you currently can only reserve one through the Lyft app. This poses the question, “Why did Disney decide to partner with Lyft over Uber?”

The official statement from Disney is Lyft was chosen over Uber because of it’s well-established user base and popularity. However, it might be more than that. Uber’s name has been in the news recently for one might say all the wrong reasons. Within the past few months, there have been sexual assault claims and a calls for a boycott for their handling on President Trump’s immigration order.

“As we know, Uber is having some internal problems,” said Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services, a management and consulting firm based in Ohio. “And when you think of a wholesome, family-oriented company, you think of Disney.”

Uber might not be completely out of the resort transportation arena though. If the Minnie vans prove to be successful, one may see Universal teaming up with Uber to offer a similar service.

Currently, traditional Uber and Lyft services are still available on Disney property as well. A ride in a Minnie Van will costs a total of $20 which is a little pricier than what the traditional Uber and Lyft charge for on-property transportation. However, since the Minnie Van include 2 car seats, they might actually be less expensive than an Uber or Lyft where a family would require them.

As of today, the Minnie Vans are still in the testing phase at just a handful of resorts. A full roll out to all resorts shouldn’t be too far off.

On July 14th, 2017 wedding gown designer Alfred Angelo closed its locations and filed for bankruptcy. Their abrupt closure left many brides without gowns smack in the middle of wedding season. While the designer managed to get dresses and accessories out to some of their brides following the bankruptcy filing date, Alfred Angelo has released an official statement in regards to the remaining brides that have not received their gowns. “It has now become apparent that the logistical and financial strain of fulfilling each and every open order makes continuing that course of action no longer possible.”

Alfred Angelo was the wedding gown designer for the popular Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Bridal Collection.

Can you believe that the 22nd Annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival kicks off this month? August 31 to be exact! This year’s festival promises to be even bigger and more magical than better. In honor of this being the 35th Anniversary Celebration of Epcot, the festival will feature a record 35 amazing wine and food marketplaces.

Here’s a peak of some things to come with Epcot chef Greg Hannon:

As many of you know, the 22nd Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is expanding for a longer-than-ever 75-day run (Aug. 31-Nov. 13, 2017). The event will be part of the park’s 35th anniversary day on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017 and feature several new experiences. Here are a few favorites:

New Acts for 2017 “Eat to the Beat” Concert Series will amp things up this year. There will be 11 new artists, including Jazz Legend Kenny G, and pop superstars like 10,000 Maniacs and Squeeze. Blog author Charles Stovall has the complete list here.

New Marketplaces are coming to the Festival – and India and Spain marketplaces will return for an encore. Our global marketplaces will extend into Future World to offer brand-new taste sensations.

ABC’s “The Chew” is returning to tape five festival shows that will air Oct. 9-13. With Spaceship Earth as the backdrop, the Emmy Award-winning show hosts will again delight a live audience with on-stage cooking and stories of their Disney adventures plus segments from across Walt Disney World Resort. Popular TV chefs and culinary icons will entertain at Festival Center demonstrations. Those same stars of the kitchen will create new dishes for premium events such as Party for the Senses grand tastings with new concepts and themes. Premium events are open for booking right now.

Guests are invited to join Snow White, The Prince, and Dopey for a magical holiday breakfast this holiday season at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. The breakfast will take place in Cafe SFA on the 8th floor of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, NY on select days from November 25 to December 31.

Breakfast items will be served family style and include: vanilla infused Greek yogurt and seasonal fruit, mini pretzel croissant ham and cheese, mini pancakes with lightly sweetened whipped cream and strawberries, mini cheddar frittatas, and mini cupcakes.

New Star Wars Virtual Reality Experience Coming To Disney Springs and Downtown Disney

Next time you’re at Disney imagine being able to grab your lightsaber and go toe-to-to with some of your favorite Star Wars characters in an amazing virtual world! Lucasfilm announced today via press release that that are teaming up with VR start-up company THE VOID to bring a fully immersive hyper-reality experience to both Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs and Disneyland’s Downtown Disney shopping districts.

Dubbed Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, this new experience will provide guests with an opportunity to move freely and un-tethered throughout a Star Wars-themed virtual word while engaging with fellow participants as well as popular Star Wars characters through sight, sound, touch, smell, and motion.

Though few details have been revealed about the actual experience, THE VOID created something very similar for Madame Tussauds in New York featuring a “Ghosbusters” theme. Check out this video for a taste of what might be in store for Star Wars fans:

Lucasfilm revealed that they are hoping to have the experience ready in time for the holiday season. Though details regarding pricing have yet to be released, the Ghosbusters experience in New York was offered at $20.00.

This comes hot on the heals of an announcement at this year’s D23 convention that Disney is also collaborating with Lenovo on a Star Wars–themed augmented reality project. Check out the details here.

Celebrating National Watermelon Day The Disney Way

Happy National Watermelon Day! What you didn’t know what today was? It’s ok! We have you covered. Both Disneyland and Walt Disney World can help you celebrate in style. Disney California Adventure Park can indulge in a little watermelon cotton candy. It’s a seasonal item sold at carts throughout the park so make sure to get yours soon.

Walt Disney World puts its own spin on this summer classic with a Watermelon Rind Salad found at Boma – Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Can’t make it to Disney to celebrate? We have included the recipe below so you can enjoy from the comfort of your home!

Celebrating National Watermelon Day The Disney Way

Watermelon Rind Salad
Makes 6 cups

INGREDIENTS

4 pounds watermelon
1 cup thinly sliced ginger
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup rice vinegar
1 cup grenadine
1 cup water
DIRECTIONS:
1. Slice red fruit away from watermelon rind and skin. Scrub skin and scrape the white part of rind with a serrated spoon to remove most of red fruit.
2. Slice rind and skin into paper-thin strips with a mandoline. Set aside.
3. Stir together ginger, sugar, vinegar, grenadine, and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce to a simmer and cook 10 minutes to let ginger infuse liquid. Remove from heat and slightly cool.
4. Stir in watermelon rind and marinate at least 1 hour. Refrigerate in an airtight container. To serve, drain the rind and remove ginger slices.

The Official Walt Disney Studios Tour Available For D23 Gold Members

On Saturday September 9th, D23 Gold Members (and Gold Family Members) have the rare opportunity to enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour tour of The Walt Disney Studios. This exclusive experience also includes a visit to Walt Disney’s office suite and Archives.

EXPERIENCE

Join your D23 tour guide on a stroll through the original Animation building, where beloved animated films (including Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, and The Jungle Book) were created; see the historic sound stages used for filming such Disney live-action movie classics as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mary Poppins, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; plus explore the beautiful Disney Legends Plaza, which honors those who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy. Many guests will also recognize the exterior spaces on the lot, which have been featured in productions from the Mickey Mouse Club and The Absent-Minded Professor to Saving Mr. Banks, Muppets Most Wanted, and ABC’s black-ish!

Then, explore the rich legacy and historical collections of The Walt Disney Company during a tour of the Walt Disney Archives and Walt Disney’s restored 3H office suite, filled with original furnishings, awards, and items from the master showman’s personal collection. Upon exiting the suite, all guests will receive an exclusive pin to commemorate this memorable experience.

Guests will also have the opportunity to shop at the Disney Studio Store and purchase items only available on the Studio lot!

Tours will take place at the Walt Disney Studios at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. Check-in will begin outside the Hyperion Bungalow at The Walt Disney Studios 30 minutes before your tour.

D23 Gold and Gold Family Members may reserve a ticket for themselves and one (1) guest. The cost is $75 per person (plus $5 processing fee). Tickets will go on sale on Friday, August 11, at 10 a.m. PT. Please check here for ticketing link and additional details.
