Disney’s Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom

Disney's Animal Kingdom

As far back as we can remember, Disney has created opportunities for us to “fawn” over animals such as Bambi, Abu, and Simba. 20 years ago, Disney created the opportunity for us to come and adore the same types of animals in person, right at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This would not be able to happen without Disney’s Animal Care Experts on call tending to all of the animals and their needs.

Disney's Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom

With animals on site, and their babies popping up over time, it is essential that there are experts on staff who are able to care for the animals. The past few months alone, Animal Kingdom has seen the birth of Sumatran Tiger cubs (Anala and Jeda) and a baby Nile hippo (Augustus).

Animal Kingdom Sumatran TigerZoological Manager Kristen Wolfe explained that it can take up to 3 years planning for a baby to enter the park. It involves making sure there is enough room in the park and matching potential mother and fathers based on temperament, genetics, and recommendations from Species Survival Plan coordinators. This is exactly the type of planning that went into Sohni’s (the mother of Anala and Jeda) pregnancy.

Disney's Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom

Jill Piltz, another Zoological Manager, and her team were responsible for monitoring Sohni’s pregnancy and delivery, which they were able to observe through a camera system. The team then had the privilege of naming the cubs: Anala, which means “feisty” or “fiery” due to her big personality and Jeda, which means “pause” since he has markings resembling the pause symbol. The cubs are now eight months old with Anala weighing in at 88.5 pounds and Jeda topping his sister at 92 pounds.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to one of the largest bloats (a group of hippos) in North America. It had been 13 years since the last baby hippo, so Wolfe and her team worked with the Species Survival Plan to determine the best candidate to become the next mother. Due to her ability to tell other hippos what to do, Tuma was determined to be the best candidate for delivering a baby hippo and acclimating it to the bloat.

Baby hippo

As Tuma’s delivery grew near, the team kept a close eye on her and continued to do so for Augustus’ first eight weeks of life. As Augustus learned “how to behave” within the group, his mother’s overprotectiveness began to fade. “Just like a kid, if he does something that gets him in trouble, he learns not to do that again,” explained Wolfe. “What people don’t realize is that hippo behaviors are a lot like human behaviors- there’s that growing and learning period for them that we need to let happen.”

Animal Kingdom's baby hippo

The key approach Disney’s Animal Care Experts take is letting the animals learn for themselves.“The animals teach their babies all the natural behaviors they should, and then someday, when those babies become parents on their own, they already know all those behaviors because they learned them from mom growing up,” Piltz says.

Disney’s Animal Care Experts make sure the animals feel like cast members are keeping their distance, but the cast members are grateful for the brief interactions they do have as it reminds them of how fortunate they are to witness the lives and world of these wild animals. “Last night I took two seconds to sit down at the computer and write a work order, and I look over—and the office door is open—to see a rhino off in the distance, eating dinner. And there are people on this earth that will never see a live rhino ever,” Wolfe shared.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Tiger

Piltz agrees that simple moments can have the most profound impact. “With the Sumatran tiger cubs, you see new behavior. Seeing them wrestle with a coconut and play with it…Those are the moments that you’ve got to just stop, watch, and take a moment and enjoy it. You’re working with endangered species that are very rare on this planet and they’re awesome animals.”

Movie Review – Disney ‘ZOMBIES’

ZOMBIES DVD Review

The Zombie craze has made its way to the World of Disney and I have exciting news! Disney’s ZOMBIES will be released tomorrow on DVD. I received an early copy and I wanted to share my thoughts. The Disney Channel’s newest original movie ZOMBIES is another toe-tapping teenage musical similar to its successful predecessors such as Descendents and High School Musical but definitely with an original spin.

The plot is set 50 years after a nuclear power plant explodes creating a zombie apocalypse. Scientific advancement has figured out a way for zombies and humans to co-exist but that doesn’t mean social conflict doesn’t still rear its ugly head. Zed, the zombie with aspirations of joining the high school football team, and Addison the perky human cheerleader join forces to bring Seabrook High School (and ultimately the town) together to find harmony.

The movie has many similarities to Descendants in that it depicts the “outsiders” being allowed to join the local high school and following along as they find ways to be accepted. The musical numbers may not be as memorable as in Descendants but they are still catchy and enjoyable. I also really liked the characters especially Zed and Addison who seemed to really have chemistry on screen together.

The film delivers an upbeat way to discuss the difficulties of being an individual even when society seems to value and reward those who assimilate and conform. In the end, I say it’s a no-brainer, grab ZOMBIES on Disney DVD on April 24th!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom 20th Anniversary Celebration Review

Disney's Animal Kingdom 20th Anniversary Celebration Review

Disney’s Animal Kingdom held their 20th Anniversary Celebration yesterday on Earth Day 2018.  The park featured a Welcome Celebration, a multitude of photo ops, specialty foods, UP! A Great Bird Adventure and the debut of the Pandora Utility Suit.   Here is our photo tour review of this special day.

The Welcome Celebration had a pre-show, speakers and some of our favorite characters.

See our Live Video of Disney’s Animal Kingdom 20th Anniversary Welcome Celebration here:

Photo Ops are available all around Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park for its 20th Anniversary Celebration and the Party for the Planet that celebrates Earth Day and beyond.  New Magic Shots can be found with most Disney Photopass Photographers.  You will also find hand-held props featuring a variety of animal species to recognize the Party for the Planet and the Disney Conservation Fund.   The entrance to the park featured a larger than life 20th Anniversary Celebration photo op on April 22nd.

Specialty foods included the Chocolate Earth Day Cupcake and the Vanilla 20th Anniversary Celebration Cupcake.  The difficulty was in choosing just one!  Tiffins debuted a Watermelon Appetizer and the Impossible Earth Day Slider with Yucca Fries.  Restaurant-osaurus has the Impossible Earth Day Burger with Avocado available for the duration of the Party for the Planet.

UP! A Great Bird Adventure opened today.  The show presents Russell and Dug along with some amazing birds.  The Bald Eagle was so majestic and the Peacock was beautiful.  There were some really funny chickens and a bird who could sing Old McDonald Had A Farm.

The Pandora Utility Suit meandered through parts of Pandora: The World of Avatar, delighting children and adults alike.  I mean, it is not every day that you will see something like this!

See our Live Video of the Pandora Utility Suit’s appearance for the 20th Anniversary Celebration here:

We journeyed to Rafiki’s Planet Watch aboard a sideways-riding train.  We found Doc McStuffins, a game called Match the Feces with the Species, and a display of prepared foods for a variety of animals who live at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

During the media portion of the 20th Anniversary Celebration event, we were able to speak with Joe Rohde, Portfolio Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering,  Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager, and Djuan Rivers, Vice President of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park.

Here is our video of Joe Rohde speaking about STEAM Education:

We also asked Djuan Rivers about the Evolution of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and he was kind enough to share his insight with us:

Now that Disney’s Animal Kingdom has reached its 20th year, we are excited to see what will be next for this beautiful park.  The new bird show, utility suit, photo ops and specialty foods are sure to draw in many guests with the desire to experience all that Disney’s Animal Kingdom has to offer.  The 20th Anniversary Celebration was a huge success and we look forward to future anniversary celebrations.

Will you be visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom during its Party for the Planet event?  Please leave your comments in the box below.

The Winners of the 3rd Annual Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon

The Winners of the 3rd Annual Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon

2020 Olympic Trial qualifier Brittany Charboneau of Denver, Colo., won the women’s division of the 2018 Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon presented by OtterBox on Sunday morning at Walt Disney World Resort. The overall winner of the race was Vanilson Neves of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Charboneau, 29, won the women’s division of the half marathon with a time of 1:21:39 and was followed by fellow runners Katherine Burkowski of Windermere, Fla. (1:26:09) and Jennifer Barron of Paradise, Canada (1:26:09).

Charboneau’s half marathon win Sunday is the victory lap for an already successful year, as she recently qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials during the LA Marathon in March and won the female division for both the Disney Princess Enchanted 10K in February and Walt Disney World Half Marathon in January.

“It’s pretty surreal to be honest … I’ve been running for seventeen years and, up until a couple years ago, I had never won a race, ever, not even a 100-meter dash,” said Charboneau. “So, it’s just really cool, because I’ve been working so hard and it’s paying off, so it’s amazing.”

The Winners of the 3rd Annual Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon
(April 19-22, 2018) More than 43,500 runners participated in the third annual Star Wars Half Marathon Ð The Dark Side weekend presented by OtterBox at Walt Disney World Resort. The galactic race weekend included runDisney Kids Races, 5K, 10K and half marathon races.

In the men’s division, Neves, 30, flew past the competition, building a five-minute lead before winning the 13.1-mile race in 1:09:55. He was followed by Dicson Peixoto Falcao of Fortaleza, Brazil (1:14:38) and Zane Grabau of Gainesville, Fla. (1:15:27).

Neves recently placed second at the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon presented by Cigna. “The race was very difficult because it was very windy and I was alone for the first kilometer,” said Neves. “… But it was very exciting to win because I took second place in the marathon in January.”

More than 17,000 runners participated in the 13.1-mile race during the third-annual Star Wars Half Marathon – The Dark Side presented by OtterBox. The weekend of galactic family-friendly events included the runDisney Health & Fitness Expo and the runDisney Kids Races, in addition to the Star Wars Dark Side 5K, Star Wars Dark Side 10K and Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon. The weekend also included the 19.3-mile Star Wars First Order Challenge, where runners completed both the Star Wars Dark Side 10K and Half Marathon in back-to-back days.

The Star Wars Half Marathon – The Dark Side is the fourth race weekend in the runDisney series that encompasses Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Paris. This fall, runners can join their favorite Star Wars, Marvel and Disney villains at the Disneyland Paris Magic Run Weekend, September 20-23, as well as dine-and-dash during the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend presented by MISFIT, November 1-4.

New Monorail Cupcake Is A Delicious Cookies and Cream Tribute

Monorail Cupcake

Please stand clear of the doors! Everyone will be definitely be rushing to get this brand new dessert at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The Walt Disney World monorail is an iconic symbol that we all know and love. It’s only fitting that it gets its own cupcake right?

Disney definitely did an amazing job with this vanilla cupcake with cookies and cream frosting swirled on top. The yummy filling is also cookies and cream too. The flavoring is continued with the chocolate shell and Oreo cookie sitting above the frosting. But the best part of this cupcake is the white chocolate monorail nestled on top.

You can find the new Monorail Cupcake at the Contempo Cafe located inside the Contemporary Resort for $5.99. What a great treat to enjoy while watching the monorail rush by!
