Check Out What's New Among the 2018 Sports Events at Disney!

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort hosts thousands of athletes every year and 2018 will be no different. In 2018 athletes of all ages and abilities are set to train and compete. Among the 2018 sports events at Disney will be the NFL Pro Bowl Week. The kickoff to the new year begins with the 25th Annual Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend beginning on January 4th and is presented by Cigna. You can find the runDisney Health & Fitness Expo at the complex during this time. The weekend will include kids’ races, 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon races. The event brings more than 100,000 athletes and spectators to the area. That number makes this the largest sporting event in Central Florida.

A week later on Jan. 12, collegiate cheerleading and dance squads will yell, tumble and stunt their way to glory in the National College Cheerleading & Dance Championship, the most prestigious college cheer event in the country.

And to close out a busy January, the top stars representing the AFC and NFC conferences will return to the sports complex for NFL Pro Bowl Week festivities. In addition to team practices, the 2018 Pro Bowl Skills Showdown will take place at the sports complex, pitting AFC and NFC athletes against each other in unique competitions, such as:

Kick Tac Toe: A new challenge this year which will test the accuracy of kickers with a version of the classic game.

Gridiron Gauntlet: A selected number of players from each team will participate in a relay race which showcases strength, speed and agility.

Drone Drop: A bonus event where one player from each team will attempt to catch footballs dropped from drones from increasing heights above the field. The player who records the highest catch total wins a monetary prize that will be donated to the charity of his choice.

Pro Bowl Week culminates with the 2018 Pro Bowl, held Jan. 28 at Camping World Stadium.

In February, the Atlanta Braves return for their 21st spring training season at Disney, with games getting underway at Champion Stadium on Feb. 26. The Braves will host the World Series Champion Houston Astros (Mar. 8), as well as Washington Nationals (Feb. 26, March 1), St. Louis Cardinals (March 3), Miami Marlins (March 4) and New York Yankees (March 9, 24), among others.

For fans in attendance, Disney character appearances and special moments such as kids running the bases after every game are some of the in-game entertainment opportunities that make Braves spring training at Disney a unique experience. Individual spring training game tickets are on sale at www.espnwwos.com/braves, through Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000) and at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Box Office. Tickets range from $15 (general admission berm seating in left field) to $59 (lower level reserved seats).

Diamond 9 Sun Classic Winter Showcase (Jan. 11-14): The top travel softball teams in the country will play in front of college coaches in this premier showcase event.
National College Cheerleading & Dance Championship (Jan. 12-14)
Disney 3v3 Soccer Championship (Jan. 13-15): One of eight youth soccer events at the sports complex, this tournament offers and Open Division to all 3v3 teams, and an Invitational Division for teams that have qualified by participating in other 3v3 events.
Disney Field Hockey Showcase (Jan. 19-21): Returning to the sports complex in 2018, this USA Field Hockey-sanctioned event is the ultimate place for top field hockey clubs to be seen by college coaches.
Sand Dollar/Whitlow Invitationals (Jan. 19-21): The Sand Dollar/Whitlow Invitational is a first-class women’s and men’s competitive gymnastics competition

National Dance Team Championship (Feb. 2-4)
National High School Cheerleading Championship (Feb. 10-11)
Diamond 9 President’s Day Sun Classic (Feb. 15-19)
Twirl Mania International Championship (Feb. 16-19): A baton twirling championship designed for soloists, pairs and twirl teams.
Braves Spring Training (Mid Feb.-Mar.24)
Disney President’s Day Soccer Festival (Feb. 17-19)
Diamond 9 College Citrus Classic Week I (Feb. 22-25)
Disney High School/College Spring Training (Feb. 25-April 29): high school and college baseball, golf, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, softball, tennis and track and field teams spend spring break training where the pros train at Disney
Diamond 9 College Citrus Classic Week II (Mar. 1-4)
Contest of Champions National Dance Competition (Mar. 2-4)
UCA International All-Star Championship (Mar. 10-11): An annual gymnastics competition held at the sports complex
Disney Volleyball Showcase (Mar. 16-18): This USA Volleyball-sanctioned event is a qualifying tournament for the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.
AmeriCheer & AmeriDance International Championship (Mar. 24-25)
AAU Boys’ Basketball (Mar. 30-July 29): AAU spring hoops events get underway in March, culminating in the AAU National Championships in July.

Disney World Announces Closures Due to Below Average Temperatures

The first week of the New Year has brought arctic temperatures to most of the country. The cold weather has even worked it’s way all the way to Walt Disney World and caused Disney to announce some closures and cancellations.

Here is what has been announced so far:

Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park: The water park is today and will remain closed through Saturday, March 17 for its annual refurbishment.
Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park: The water park is scheduled to be closed through Saturday, January 6 and is scheduled to reopen to Guests on Sunday, January 7 weather permitting.
Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort: Both the 5:15 pm and 8:15 performances today, January 4 and tomorrow, January 5 have been canceled. The 8:15 pm performance on Saturday, January 6 has also been canceled. Guests with tickets to any of these performances will receive a credit back to their original form of payment. Guests can contact (407) WDW-DINE with any questions.
Walt Disney World Resort Pools: For the second day, all pools at Walt Disney World Resorts are closed.

Disney's Grand Floridian Plans to Celebrate 30th Anniversary in Style

This June will mark the 30th Anniversary of the opening of the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa at Walt Disney World. In honor of this special occasion, Disney will be celebrating this Victorian-themed luxury hotel and spa by hosting the Grand Floridian Resort 30th Anniversary Gala on June 30, 2018.

Guests at the gala will enjoy some of the resort’s most popular dishes through the years served in a five-course meal. The event will also include live entertainment and an open bar. What would happen if Annalise Keating and Olivia Pope came together on the small screen? Well we will find out when TGIT worlds collide later this season during “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Scandal” crossover episodes, ABC confirmed today.

Kerry Washington and Viola Davis posted the news early this morning and it was confirmed by Shonda Rhimes and Pete Nowalk, executive producer of “How to Get Away with Murder.”

A Terminated Employee Has Filed a Lawsuit Against the Company Claiming Discrimination

Terminated Disney employee sues for discrimination

Former Disney employee, Abderrahmane Sebti, has filed a lawsuit against the company alleging discrimination because of his Moroccan nationality.

Sebti was a Cast Member at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort until 2014, when he was terminated. He had been an employee of Disney since 1989. He is seeking over $75,000 in the suit he filed last week in the U.S. District Court’s Orlando division against his former employer.

The suit accuses Disney of violating Sebti civil rights and creating a hostile working environment. Sebti states he was prevented from praying during his Ramadan fast. He also states he was passed up for promotions.

An incident that was reported to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office where he complained he found a noose at work is also included in the filing. In 2012, Sebti reported finding minor scratches on his car and later what appearned to be a noose made out of green duct tape on his office chair. “ … He feels the noose was a sign telling to go ‘hang himself’ and feels that his is being threatened,” the sheriff’s January 2013 incident report said.

It was later determined that the incident was “unfounded” according to the sheriff’s office, meaning that the investigating detective found no truth to the allegations or there was no proof a crime was committed. No arrests were made, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

While Sebti’s attorney, Jay Romano, declined to comment, Disney said in a statement, “We have not been formally served with the complaint and will respond as appropriate in court.”

Prior to his termination Sebti was a premium and special events coordinator at the ESPN complex. He is seeking damages for lost wages, damages to his professional reputation and mental distress according to documents filed with the court.

University of Central Florida Knights to Be Honored in Parade at The Magic Kingdom

On Sunday, January 7, the University of Central Florida Knights football team will make its way down Main Street, U.S.A. at the Magic Kingdom for a special parade in their honor. This will be a celebration of Orlando’s hometown team having a championship season with a perfect record and outstanding academic success.

UCF’s student-athletes also have posted the highest graduation rate among all public institutions in the nation in the Football Bowl Subdivision for four consecutive years.

The football team, cheerleaders, and the marching band will make their way down Main Street, U.S.A. at 4:30 p.m. All fans of the school are invited to the Magic Kingdom to cheer on their team!

The UCF Knights finished their season 13-0. They capped off the season by defeating the Auburn Tigers 34-27 in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Day.
