Highlights of Week 5 and 6 Epcot International Festival of the Arts

Highlights of Week 5 and 6 Epcot International Festival of the Arts

It’s hard to believe that there are only 2 more weekends for the Epcot International Festival of the Arts. With festival events every day of the week, it has been amazing activity this year! Some of the best things are the great culinary artistry, exhibits, Artful Photo Ops and other events.

If you haven’t been able to enjoy this amazing festival yet, there’s still plenty of time!

The seminars are included with Epcot admission and are generally 30 minutes, and the workshops have a nominal fee but last 75 minutes and include hands-on training and a cool takeaway.

Here are some workshops you could try over the next two weeks:

  • (Saturday, February 10) Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons – David A. Bossert, Author and Disney Historian will showcase his latest fascinating writing efforts, a book based on the history of Walt Disney’s early animation. Guests will learn about the origins and history of Disney’s first major animation success in this immersive lecture that includes the screening of rare Oswald cartoons.
  • (Monday, February 12) Gesture Drawing Class: Todd Bright, a former Disney animator, will showcase some of the foundations of animation. Guests will learn the art of quick sketching from life with a Disney animator and how “gesture drawing” of people is basic practice for animators, story board artists, and directors. A single drawing can tell a story.
  • (Thursday, February 15) 3D Paper Crafting: Artist Dave Avanzino will take guests into the world of 3D shadowbox art. In this workshop, guests will create their own dimensional paper artwork, learning techniques to cut, fold and add spacers to their work making a framed magical masterpiece!
  • (Sunday, February 19) Mini Masterpieces: Curators from our own Orlando Museum of Art help participants make their own landscape, portrait or abstract work on canvas inspired by the Orlando Museum of Art’s State of Excellence.

Don’t forget to visit the Festival website for all the official times and prices. Seminars can be reserved day-of at the Odyssey Festival Center. Workshops can be booked in advance by calling (407) WDW-TOUR.

Broadway Bound
As a reminder, the Disney on Broadway series runs Fridays through Mondays during the Festival (or what we like to call a “Disney Weekend”).

The next two weekends – February 9-12 and February 16-19 – shine the spotlight on Josh Strickland, the original lead from Disney’s “Tarzan” and Ashley Brown, who starred in the original Broadway production of Disney’s “Mary Poppins.” Ashley also portrayed Belle in Disney’s “Beauty & the Beast” on Broadway.

All Disney on Broadway shows are included in theme park admission and take place at the America Gardens Theatre at 5:30, 6:45 and 8 p.m. Broadway fans can book dining packages that include guaranteed seating for a show and a wonderful meal.*

A Disneyland Social Club’s Lawsuit is Bringing Allegations Against Another Club and Disneyland

Disneyland social club's lawsuit

Social Clubs at Disneyland have really exploded this decade.  These social clubs are groups of 20 or more Disney fans that wear matching vests – with the Disney character that the club is named for on the back and Disney trading pins on the front – and stroll the parks together.  But is it really that innocent?  One Disneyland social club’s lawsuit would lead us to believe otherwise.

The lawsuit was filed with the Orange County Superior Court.  In it, the head of one club has accused another of using tactics they call gangster-like to collect “protection” money for a charity fundraiser at the park.

The lawsuit was filed by the Main Street Fire Station 55 Social Club.  The leaders of that club are alleging that they have been bullied by the leader of the White Rabbits Social Club.

The lawsuit, which lists 19 members of the White Rabbits, is bringing allegations of defamation, invasion of privacy, conspiracy and intentional infliction of emotional distress against those named.  The suit is also looking to provide compensatory and putative damages to the victims.

Also named in the suit is Disneyland itself for failing to take action against the offending club. According to a Disneyland spokeswoman, the resort has not been served with a lawsuit.  She refused further comment.

In the lawsuit, John and Leslee Sarno, the founders of Main Street Fire Station 55 claim that they planned a fundraiser and memorial walk on September 11, 2016 to benefit familes of firefighters who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.

The lawsuit claims that a week before the event to was to take place John Sarno was approached by the head of the White Rabbits Social Club, Jakob Fite. Fite, and four other members of the club, demanded $500 to “protect” the event participants.  According to Sarno if he didn’t pay Fite and the White Rabbits would make sure Sarno never got into the park again, the lawsuit says.

When Sarno refused to pay, it is stated in the suit that Fite and his allies began spreading malicious rumors about him on social media sites that are popular with Disneyland social clubs.

The suit also claims that Sarno’s medical information was distributed to “unauthorized users”  and names Kaiser Foundation health Plan as a defendant for failing to protect this private information.

In an email from Patricia Kramer, the attorney for John and Leslee Sarno, she states that the couple “have no desire to further publicize their circumstances or to take any action that could be construed as their own re-publication of the false and defamatory statements that have been circulated by the defendants in this case.”

Disneyland Paris Hollywood Tower of Terror to Undergo Renovations

Disneyland Paris Hollywood Tower of Terror to Undergo Renovations

On May 21st, Disneyland Paris is expecting the renovations to the Hollywood Tower of Terror to begin. Thankfully, Disney does a great job disguising renovations with a themed tarp to preserve the magic.

The best news is that the attraction should continue running with periodic shutdowns until March of 2019 when it is expected to be completed. For now, we are still in the dark as to if the theming will change.

New American Icons Have Been added to Epcot’s American Adventure Which Will Reopen Later This Month

Epcot

The American Adventure located in Epcot’s World Showcase is slated to open on February 15th after closing for refurbishment.  Guests visiting the attraction later this month will notice some exciting changes including the addition of a few notable icons.

The American Adventure brings together a moving stage, 35- Audio-Animatronics and a giant screen that together tell the story of the rich history of the United States.  Additions to this amazing line-up will include music composer John Williams, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and ballerina Misty Copeland.

In addition, the team at Epcot is hard at work converting the attraction to an all-digital projection system and installing a new screen and new speakers to make the attraction look and sound even better than before.

But, that’s not all. The iconic anthem “Gold Dreams” has also be re-recorded and features a brand new orchestration that brings beloved music and lyrics to life in a way that really resonates.

This is just one of the many exciting changes coming to Walt Disney World in the weeks and months ahead. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with Chip and Co. for the latest in Disney World news, refurbishments and updates.

Take a Trip to Wakanda with the Cast of Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’

Take a Trip to Wakanda with the Cast of Marvel's 'Black Panther'

Marvel Studios presents “Black Panther,” the story of T’Challa, a young African prince who takes on the mantle of King and Super Hero, and the centuries’ old legacy that comes with it.

Long known for its revolutionary creative vision, Marvel Comics has introduced its audiences to a diverse roster of Super Heroes since 1939, most notably with the groundbreaking Black Panther character that made its first appearance in “Fantastic Four Vol. 1” Issue 52, published in 1966.

“Black Panther” stars Chadwick Boseman (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Get on Up”), Michael B. Jordan (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”), Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “12 Years a Slave”), Danai Gurira (“The Walking Dead,” “All Eyez on Me”), Martin Freeman (“Hobbit” trilogy, “Sherlock”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out,” “Sicario”), Letitia Wright (“Urban Hymn,” “Glasgow Girls”), Winston Duke (“Person of Interest, “Modern Family”), with Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett (“American Horror Story,” “London Has Fallen”),with Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Lee Daniels’ “The Butler”), and Andy Serkis (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”).

Ryan Coogler (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”) directs from a screenplay he wrote with Joe Robert Cole (“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”). Kevin Feige is producer with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nate Moore, Jeffrey Chernov and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

During a recent press conference at an undisclosed location in Los Angeles, we had the pleasure of hearing from the Cast and filmmakers on how this movie is different than other Marvel Universe films.

In attendance at the press conference was: Chadwick Boseman “T’Challa / Black Panther”, Michael B. Jordan “Killmonger”, Letitia Wright “Shuri”, Lupita Nyong’o “Nakia”, Danai Gurira “Okoye”, Martin Freeman “Everett K Ross”, Daniel Kaluuya “W’Kabi”, Winston Duke “M’Baku”, Angela Bassett “Ramonda”, Forest Whitaker “Zuri”, Andy Serkis “Ulysses Klaue”, Ryan Coogler / Director & Kevin Feige / Producer.

Q: This movie has been trying to be made for so long. We don’t believe in coincidences, so even though some people would have seen it gotten made a lot time ago, this was the time for this movie to be made, with this cast, with this director – right here. You did something special, Ryan. What did you think?

A: RYAN COOGLER: Oh, man, I felt – I just felt incredibly blessed, you know, to have had the opportunity to make the film this way, to make the film with this studio, you know, working with Kevin and his team – Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, and Nate Moore, who Chadwick was just talking about – has been like – which is an incredible opportunity. And it’s not something I ever imagined, you know, would happen. And it’s good to work with my mentor, and these people who I’ve watched, you know, for my whole life, and some friends that I’ve made through this process.

Take a Trip to Wakanda with the Cast of Marvel's 'Black Panther'

Q: Giving props to the ladies of Wakanda. But how proud of you all were – to see yourselves up, being so powerful, and so beautiful, and so regal on that screen?

A: ANGELA BASSETT: Extraordinarily so. And so pleased that this story, you know, written by Ryan, and Joe Robert Cole, and Marvel, that it supported that. You know, it – you know, in African culture, you know, they feel as if there is no king without a queen.

And I think in this story, it highlights the queen, you know, the warrior, you know, the general – the young sister, you know. So I was so proud to have my daughter, and my son there last night, because in their faces, and in their spirit – and they were feeling themselves.

DANAI GURIRA: Yeah, okay, I’ll talk. Yeah, when Ryan sat me down and talked to me about his vision, and the story, and the characters, and the women, I was just floored, you know, because you don’t actually get to hear that often. You know, you don’t actually get to hear that often. You know, you don’t actually get sat down and hear that type of a vision. And then it embodied with us being on the continent, women from the continent, but very developed, very complex. It was amazing. I mean, it was just like, this is going to – like, this is something else – like, I just want to watch it. I get to be in it?

There’s so many great things I could say about how Ryan developed these women characters, and allowed us to collaborate – that I’m just – I feel really blessed about, and excited.

Q: The line that you have to walk in this film to make this blockbuster, big budget, Marvel film, but also keep those themes, and so and go deep, and really make a film that has some meaning – that’s tough to do. So where did you, or how do you kind of try to balance that off?

RYAN COOGLER: I think it was – I mean, it’s something that I actually like talking about, because you know, for me, I grew up loving comic books. I love not just comic books, but I love pop culture. I love toys, actions figures, you know, video games, all of that stuff. When I got older and got in the, you know, and realized that I wanted to make movies, right, that’s how I fell in love with internationalism, and, you know, cinema that left with you, you know, left you with something to chew on, with something to think about. But I never fell out of love with those types of films, you know, and those types of stories. And I think the best versions of those stories, you know, do both things. And for me, when I came and sat down with Marvel, after speaking with Nate a little bit over the phone, and meeting him – and you know, I was very honest with Kevin. And you think of Marvel like this big, huge studio. It’s like, oh, man, like the biggest studio in the world right now.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler is known for his intimate character-driven style, which catapulted him to the forefront of the indie film world in 2013 with his riveting award-winning drama “Fruitvale Station,” starring Michal B. Jordan. Coogler’s follow-up film “Creed,” again with Michael B. Jordan and also with Sylvester Stallone, cemented his reputation as a filmmaker who excelled with challenging, multi-layered material.

“Ryan Coogler is an unbelievable filmmaker,” comments producer Kevin Feige. “He’s already made two films that, I believe, will stand the test of time. The fact that he was as excited and passionate about jumping into this storyline as we were was amazing for us. His early thoughts and ideas really reinvigorated us with the possibilities for the film.”

For Coogler, talking with Kevin Feige was a meeting of minds that also “definitely attracted” him to the prospect of taking on “Black Panther.” “Kevin is somebody who you could tell really loves what he does,” says Coogler. “Kevin has a really clear vision of what this universe means in pop culture and in the industry and what it could do. He’s a big-picture guy, but at the same time he can go from big picture to character and story and what’s important in a heartbeat.”

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” releases in theaters on February 16, 2018.
