Frozen The Broadway Musical to Offer Online Lottery for $30 Seats

Theater-goers hoping to check out Disney’s new Broadway Musical Frozen in New York City but who don’t want to pay for full price tickets will be delighted to know that the production will be running a digital lottery system offering a select amount of reduced tickets for each performance.

Earlier today, Disney announced that $30 tickets would be available for performances starting tomorrow (Thursday, February 22nd) at  www.luckyseat.com/frozen.  Under the system, a limited number of tickets for each performance will be sold to winners in a random drawing.  Each winner is entitled to 2 tickets at the rate of $30 each.  The tickets will be for restricted view seats.

Entries will be accepted until 11:00 am EST the day before the performance.  Winners and non-winners will be notified at 12:30pm each day prior to the performance via email.  Results will also be available online or guests can opt to be notified via SMS text message.  Guests must pay for their tickets with a credit card by 10:00pm the day before the performance or risk losing your ticket.

Winners can pick up their tickets at least 2 hours before showtime at the Will Call Window on the day of the performance.  Photo ID is required and must match the name on the winning lottery drawing.

Disney’s Injunction is Rejected

Disney's Injunction is Rejected

On Tuesday, a judge rejected Disney’s request for an injunction which would stop Redbox from selling digital download codes. This is quite an upset for Disney. The court battle between the two companies has been on-going since December when Disney sued Redbox for copyright infringement.

Redbox has been purchasing Disney DVD combo packs, which include a Blu-Ray, DVD and a digital download code. The company has then been selling the codes individually even though Disney includes a warning, “codes are not for sale or transfer”. However, Judge Dean Pregerson ruled that this warning does not create a binding contract and rejected Disney’s request to stop Redbox from selling the codes.

Pregerson agreed with Redbox’s argument that Disney’s copyright does not extend to a consumer’s ability to resell codes, Blu-ray discs or DVDs. “This improper leveraging of Disney’s copyright in the digital content to restrict secondary transfers of physical copies directly implicates and conflicts with public policy enshrined in the Copyright Act, and constitutes copyright misuse,” said Pregerson.

Further, Redbox argued that the “first-sale doctrine” should apply to the resale of the codes. The doctrine states that once a copy of work has been sold for the first time, copyright holders cannot control what happens thereafter. However, Pregerson sided with Disney finding the doctrine does not apply as digital codes allow consumers to create a new copy rather than transfer an existing copy.

It seems Disney is not likely to succeed based on Pregerson’s decision to reject the injunction. Redbox has filed a motion to have the case dismissed and the hearing is set for March 5th. In addition, the company has filed a countersuit, in which they accuse Disney of engaging in “anti-competitive tactics” in an attempt to remove competition for their future streaming service.

Continue to follow along with Chip and Co. for updates on the lawsuit.

The Muppets are Coming to Disney’s New Streaming Service

Kermit Voice Actor

Kermit Voice Actor

We still don’t know what the official name will be of Disney’s Netflix-type streaming service that launches in 2019. However, every few weeks we are learning about some of the original programming that will launch stream on the service. Today, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that “The Muppets” will be coming to the new streaming service.

Disney originally purchased rights to The Muppets Studio back in 2004. Then, in 2016, Disney’s efforts to revive Kermit and Missy Piggy fell flat after their comedy series for ABC was canceled after one season.

A search for a writer for “The Muppets” reboot is currently underway.

A new “Muppet Babies” series is scheduled to premiere on Disney Jr. this year.

Dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant Will Increase to 2 Table Service Dining Credits Beginning July 27th

Dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant Will Increase to 2 Table Service Dining Credits Beginning July 27th

Disney confirmed this morning that the Dinner Menu at Be Our Guest Restaurant in the Magic Kingdom will be changing this Summer to a new 3-course Prix Fixe option with a focus on classic French Cuisine.  With the new enhanced menu, the question that most Disney fans want to know is if this will result in an increase in price as well as in Dining Credits (for those on one of Disney’s Dining Plans.)

Disney is now passing on the information that when the new dinner menu goes into effect starting on July 27th, the restaurant will indeed start charging 2 Table Service Dining Credits per person putting it on par with Cinderella’s Royal Table.

For those not on the Disney Dining Plan, out-of-pocket costs will be $55 per adult and $35 per child (ages 3-9).  Disney announced today that a special children’s menu would be created but details have yet to be revealed.

Questions still loom as to whether Beast will continue to make the rounds during the meal and/or whether other characters will be added to the mix.  Disney has yet to release any official updates regarding character dining.

For a look at the new items that will be added to the prix fixe menu check out this article.

Reservations for Be Our Guest from July 27th onward will once again open up for advances booking starting this Friday, February 23rd. Reservations can be made via My Disney Experience or by calling 407.WDW.DINE.

More Be Our Guest news is expected this week so keep following along with Chip and Co.

Disneyland Withholds $1,000 Bonuses for Hotel Workers Until They Agree to Contract Offer

dl

A union representing 2,700 housekeepers and other low-wage workers at Disneyland Resort filed a federal unfair labor practice complaint Tuesday against the entertainment giant for holding a promised $1,000 bonus “hostage” during contract negotiations.

The National Labor Relations charge by Unite Here Local 11 came the day after a written ultimatum from the Walt Disney Co. conditioning its bonus on the union’s ratification of the company’s latest contract offer.

The one-time bonus for 125,000 Disney workers was announced with fanfare in January, with the company attributing it to the corporate tax cut law, signed by President Donald Trump in December.

“If the company’s comprehensive offer is ratified by March 31, 2018, the bonus will be paid,” the Disney document reads. “If the company’s offer is not ratified by August 31, 2018, the bonus offer will expire.”

“Disney is holding our bonus hostage,” said Ada Briceño, co-president of Local 11 which represents workers at the Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. “They just increased their park prices, but the 40-cent raise they are offering to most of our workers is not going to put food on the table or allow our members to live in a dignified way.”

The union complaint noted Disneyland is withholding the $1,000 “notwithstanding the union’s lack of objection to payment of bonuses to employees.” The company, it asserted “has violated its duty to bargain in good faith, and has engaged in conduct that is inherently destructive to rights guaranteed employees under the [National Labor Relations] Act.”

Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown responded, “Because we are in an open contract with Local 11 and wages and bonuses are terms and conditions of employment, the bonus is part of our negotiation process.”

As for Disney’s contract offer, she added, “We have a strong offer on the table that includes wage increases averaging 3 percent annually over three years and a $15 hourly rate for certain job classifications, such as housekeeping and specialty culinary.”

California’s minimum wage, reflecting the state’s high cost of living, is scheduled to rise to $15 an hour by 2022 for companies with 26 employees or more.

“Disney said you can have $1,000 if you agree to stay poor,” charged Eric Clinton, president of the Florida Unite Here local in a video on the union’s Facebook page. “Let us be clear, Disney cast members deserve a living wage. We will not allow a $1,000 trick of a bonus to be held over our heads.”

In December, 93 percent of the members of the Florida unions voted against Disney’s most recent offer of a 50-cent-an-hour raise over the next two years, along with a $200 signing bonus. The average hourly wage of the unions’ Disney World members is $10.71, according to the unions. Only 3,000 make more than $15 an hour.

In Anaheim, many Disneyland workers earned between $10.50 and $11 an hour until California raised its minimum wage to $11 in January.

This week’s Disney dust-up quickly spilled over onto social media with some commenters saying a 3 percent raise is sufficient, and others pointing to Orange County’s high cost of living and taking aim at Disney’s multi-million dollar executive salaries.

In regulatory filings last month, Disney disclosed its chairman and CEO Bob Iger made $36.3 million in compensation in 2017, down from $43.9 million in 2016.

Get Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” Digital Version Soundtrack on March 9th

A Wrinkle in Time digital version soundtrack

Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” digital version soundtrack is set to be released by Walt Disney Records on March 9th as the film opens in theaters nationwide.

YouTube player

The soundtrack was produced by DuVernay and features the end-credit song “I Believe” performed by Grammy® nominated and multi-platinum selling artists DJ Khaled featuring Demi Lovato.   The song was written by Khaled, Lovato, Denisia “Blu June” Andrews and Brittany “Chi” Coney and was produced by Khaled.  Both artists are embarking on a 20-date North American tour beginning February 26 in San Diego, CA.

The soundtrack also includes two versions of “Flower of the Universe” performed by Sade, one of which is a remix by No I.D.  The multi-Grammy winning and multi-platinum selling artist also co-wrote and co-produced the track with Ben Travers and Andrew Hale. This is Sade’s second original song contribution to a soundtrack following 1986’s “Absolute Beginners.”

Five-time Grammy nominee singer-songwriter Sia performs “Magic,” a song she also co-wrote with Grammy nominated producer-songwriter Jesse Shatkin.  Shatkin also produced the track.

Grammy nominated artist Kehlani performs “Let Me Live.”  Kehlani released her debut chart-topping album, SweetSexySavage last year and will also be touring North America with Lovato and Khaled.

Also included is “Warrior,” written and performed by sisters Chloe x Halle.  The duo made a cameo in Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album and were subsequently invited to join as the opening act on The Formation World Tour.  The sisters released their debut EP, Sugar Symphony, in 2016 and are currently series regulars on Freeform’s “Grown-ish.”

The “A Wrinkle in Time” score is composed, conducted and produced by Ramin Djawadi.  The German-born composer has scored over 100 projects including blockbuster films such as “Pacific Rim,” “Iron Man” and “Clash of the Titans” and celebrated television scores including “Game of Thrones,” “Westworld,” “Prison Break” and “The Strain.”

The Grammy and Emmy®-nominated composer recorded the score in Los Angeles with a 71-piece orchestra and a 29-person choir, as well as a 24-member children’s choir.

Speaking about the artists and composer, DuVernay said: “Each song on the ‘Wrinkle in Time’ soundtrack was crafted with great care in close collaboration with the artists. My creative partnership with Sade on ‘Flower of the Universe’ was so connected that I reverse engineered the usual process and used her lyrics as actual dialogue within the film. I truly loved working with DJ Khaled who jumped into this project with open arms and an open heart, along with the great Demi Lovato. Sia, Kehlani and Chloe x Halle beautifully embraced the visuals of the film to create distinct songs that expand and elevate Meg’s heroic journey. And working with Ramin Djawadi was a dream come true as I have been a long-time admirer of his stellar work. His musical compositions for the film are perfectly otherworldly.”

A dance studio group from New Bedford Massachusetts received a very special surprise at Walt Disney World this week when members of the touring cast of Disney’s “The Lion King” popped by to pay a visit to their Disney Performing Arts Workshop.

The students from The Illusions Academy of Dance Performance Company were taking part in a workshop at Saratoga Springs Resort when they were visited by Nia Halloway, Gerald Ramsey and Ben Lipitz who are currently playing Nala, Mufasa and Pumbaa on the tour.  The stars spent time with the group answering questings and sharing tips with the young performers.  To add to the excitement, Mickey Mouse also made a special appearance.
