Military Appreciation Month: How Disney Honors Our Heroes
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn day to honor and mourn military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Disney recognizes these fallen heroes at its parks and various locations by setting up tables of remembrance. These tables symbolize and honor brave service members who never returned home. Each year, Disney places these tributes at locations like Disneyland Resort, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, and backstage at Walt Disney World, to respectfully remember their service and sacrifice.
Here are just a few of the aspects of the Missing Hero tables:
A slice of lemon on the bread plate reminds us of the bitter fate of those who will never return.
A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those who have sacrificed all.
An inverted glass is symbolic of those who cannot toast with us at this time.
The chair is empty, the seat that remains unclaimed at the table.
“The Missing Hero Tables we display at this time are meant to be a strong visual symbol of those who are no longer with us, that those who see them may stop for a moment to reflect and hopefully show appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy due to the great sacrifice that these many heroes have given for us,” explained U.S. Navy veteran and Disneyland Resort main entrance operations manager, Nick Filippone.
May is National Military Appreciation Month, and Disney is honored to salute military service—whether they be guests or cast members—in many ways. Here are a few of the ways Disney has recognized military heroes and their families throughout this past month.
Magical Sail-abrations at Disneyland for LA Fleet Week 2025
Disney had the opportunity to once again host Sailors and Marines in port for Los Angeles Fleet Week—a salute to members of the U.S. Sea Services held over Memorial Day weekend each year—by surprising 100 service members with a day at Disneyland Resort!
The Sailors and Marines had the chance to “celebrate happy” during the Disneyland 70th Celebration by enjoying time inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Mickey’s Toontown and even experience reserved viewing for the “Paint the Night” parade and “Wondrous Journeys” nighttime spectacular!
Most notably, cast members and guests alike had the chance to honor their valiant service with a special Flag Retreat ceremony in Town Square, accompanied by the Disneyland Band and The Dapper Dans.
Military Spouse Appreciation Day
At Disney, the unwavering strength and support that military families provide to their loved ones in the U.S. Armed Forces is recognized. For Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 9, Disney highlighted military spouse and planDisney panelist, Carrie.
Carrie was able to discover the joy of Disney vacations with her family thanks to the various discounts and promotions offered at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort for eligible U.S. military members.
“Disneyland Resort has truly become a home away from home for me and our kids. Obviously, we love coming to celebrate—making up for lost time when Dad’s here—but it’s also a place we choose to go when we’re having a hard time, and we just want to get away for a little bit,” explained Carrie.
Nods to Service Across The Parks
The parks are full of small details, rich history and hidden nods to service, including former President George W. Bush’s Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors exhibit in EPCOT.
Beyond the portraits, there are also nods to veterans who helped build the parks, such as Disney Legend and U.S. Navy veteran, Rear Admiral Joe Fowler, who is among nearly 25 Disney Legends who helped shape the parks as we know them today.
You can find his name at “Fowler’s Harbor” along the Rivers of America in Disneyland park or even ride the Admiral Joe Fowler ferry across the Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World.
Flag Retreats from Coast-to-Coast
Flag Retreats have become a proud tradition at the parks on both coasts. Every day, as the flag is lowered on Main Street, U.S.A., we take time to salute the heroes who stand up for our country. Disney has continuously honored countless service members, veterans and their families throughout the years and it will continue to be a representation of our enduring salute to service.
These ceremonies have created incredibly special moments where we have and continue to honor and recognize our military service members in both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom–something Disney has been doing since Disneyland park first opened almost 70 years ago.
Creating Happiness Year Round
There are so many ways Disney brings joy to guests, and Disney takes pride in over 100 years of enduring salute to service. Disney is grateful to not only recognize heroes within its parks but also through charitable giving and relationships with organizations like the USO, Blue Star Families, Fisher House, and Student Veterans of America. Additionally, Disney supports veterans through hiring initiatives such as Heroes Work Here.
Eligible U.S. Military members even have access to discounted tickets and resort stays year-round. For ticket purchases, visit your nearest participating U.S. military base ticket office or Shades of Green.

Meet the New Golden Trio: HBO Reveals Harry, Ron & Hermione for Upcoming Harry Potter Series
Accio cast reveal! HBO has officially unveiled the new faces of its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series — and the next generation of witches and wizards is ready to step into the robes of the iconic Golden Trio.
Say hello to Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. After a worldwide open casting call that saw over 30,000 hopefuls audition, these three young talents have emerged as the chosen ones to lead the new chapter of the Wizarding World.
In a joint statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod shared their excitement:
“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”
No pressure, kids — you’re following in the footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who famously brought the beloved trio to life in the original Warner Bros. film series. But with fresh energy and a full seven-season arc planned, this series promises to bring even deeper character exploration to J.K. Rowling’s bestselling novels.
A Starry Spell of Supporting Cast
Already announced as part of the magical ensemble:
John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell
Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
With talent like this and a decade-long plan in place, HBO is going all-in on what it calls a “faithful adaptation” of the seven-book saga.
Filming for the series is set to begin this summer, with a premiere window slated for late 2026 or early 2027 on HBO Max. The series is expected to span ten years, with each season tackling a single year at Hogwarts.
Whether you’re a longtime Potterhead or a new fan ready to board the Hogwarts Express for the first time, this reboot promises to enchant a whole new generation — with all the drama, danger, and dazzling charm of the original series… and maybe even a few new surprises.
In Character Shop Reopens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Just in Time for Ariel’s Return
After a long hiatus, a familiar storefront in Animation Courtyard has finally flipped its fins back open! The In Charactershop at Disney’s Hollywood Studios officially reopened to guests on Sunday, May 25, 2025, marking the first time it’s welcomed visitors since it quietly closed back in 2019.
Once a go-to spot for character-themed souvenirs, the shop originally shuttered due to heat issues (Florida sun, we see you!) and never reopened—until now. Its comeback just so happens to line up perfectly with the debut of “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,” opening May 27 in the former “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” theater right next door.
While the old In Character signage is long gone, the shop still appears under that name in the My Disney Experience app and on the Walt Disney World website, listed with hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The space itself has gotten a light refresh, with decor and merchandise fit for fans of Ariel and beyond.
Inside, you’ll find:
The Little Mermaid merchandise – from plush Flounders to Ariel tees and sea-sational accessories
Disney Princess gear – a dream come true for royal shoppers of all ages
Mickey & Friends items – because what’s a Disney shop without the Fab Five?
A lovely touch? The checkout area features framed artwork of Ariel, with Flounder and Sebastian playfully worked into the counter design. It’s a small shop, but it’s making a big splash in time for summer.
This reopening couldn’t be better timed. In just a couple of days, “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” will debut in the adjacent theater, offering guests an all-new under-the-sea experience. And right across the park, the villainous new stage show “Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After” will also make its debut on May 27. It’s safe to say Animation Courtyard is getting its groove back—and we’re here for it.
So if you’re heading to Disney’s Hollywood Studios soon, don’t swim past this newly reopened gem. Whether you’re hunting for princess merch or just looking to cool off with some indoor browsing, In Character is back—and it’s better than ever.

How were the “Disney Starlight” floats designed?
Designing floats for a nighttime parade adds another layer to the live entertainment production process. This first look at the floats reveals these are more than just static structures – they are storytelling stages on wheels.
When we think about what this storytelling looks like at night, we think about creating these landscapes – or dreamscapes, as we think about them – out of light. How do we use this medium to portray movement, color, and imagery that we would normally see in a more scenically driven float during the daytime? Today’s technology gives us more options than ever to use lighting and video elements as a storytelling tool.
For instance, our Blue Fairy magic, seen throughout the parade, is made completely from points of light; the use of a curved LED panels on the Encanto float gives us the opportunity to create magic and movement that a static image would not provide. This is the exciting technology and art of the “Disney Starlight” floats.
And speaking of exciting, here’s a moment we’ve been eagerly waiting for: the reveal of the grand finale float of “Disney Starlight.”
All the joy, wonder, and magic culminates in the parade’s finale, where a whimsical train, inspired by the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade float, emerges to take dreamers of all ages on a ride through the stars.
Swirling ribbons of starlight reveal Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, and Daisy Duck leading a procession of Disney moments that includes Snow White and Dopey in a twinkling minecar, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider floating toward a gleaming lantern on their boat, and Aladdin and Jasmine taking a magic carpet ride.
Closing out the celebration are the original dreamers, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, draped in sparkling new looks. Together, the duo sends us off, reminding us to believe in the power of wishing upon a star. Which of the finale friends are you most excited to see?
What music will we hear in “Disney Starlight”?
A parade without music is like a canvas without color. Show Director Tara Anderson said it perfectly: “You’ve got to have great music to have a great experience.”
We have an original theme written specifically for “Disney Starlight” that truly embodies all the majestic and fantasy feelings you get watching a parade come down Main Street, U.S.A. with Cinderella Castle in the background. For Disney fans, this new theme may have some surprises that sound familiar – be sure to listen closely for some Disney Parks favorites woven into the score.
Is “Disney Starlight” rehearsing now?
While floats set the stage, and music sets the tone, our performers bring the energy and excitement. Choreographed by Cindy Wilson, who drew inspiration from each of the films represented in the parade, as well as a mix of different dance styles. Every eight-count is meticulously timed to coordinate with the music and lights as they animate across the costumes and floats.
Every float built, every note in the music you hear, every performer learning the choreography for the first time – it all plays a part in building the excitement and anticipation as we get closer to the final production.
I’ll leave you with a final quote from Tara. Anyone who has worked with her can attest that this is really something she says throughout every project as we prepare for guests to see all the hard work come to fruition, and I think it really embodies what motivates the team behind the “Disney Starlight” parade: “We need to touch every heart.”
What is “Disney Starlight” about?
“Disney Starlight” transports guests into the stories of our beloved Disney characters. Through the power of the Blue Fairy’s magic, you’ll watch dreams and wishes come true. As the lights dance from float to float, you’ll see favorite classic and contemporary characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney Pixar films, some for the very first time in a Disney Live Entertainment nighttime parade!
Brought to life by the creative hands and hearts at Disney Live Entertainment, “Disney Starlight” is the perfect continuation of our legacy of nighttime parades, with bits of nostalgia sprinkled throughout a dazzling procession that raises the bar for the future.
This idea holds true for every part of this parade, not only in the float design, but in the music, choreography, and more. With several members of the creative team having worked on fan-favorites such as “Main Street Electrical Parade” and “SpectroMagic,” you will see the inspiration from ever-iconic electrical parades of years past. “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away” recalls the nostalgia of nighttime spectaculars with innovation lighting the way for a magical experience like never before.
“Disney Starlight,” we can’t wait to see you this summer – July 20 is going to be the dreamiest night!

Get Ready to Party With The Epcot Celebration Collection!
The Epcot Celebration Collection is here, and it’s basically a party you can wear (or drink out of!). This isn’t your usual Epcot merch; it’s vibrant, fun, and totally celebrates everything awesome about the park.
First up, let’s talk about the Spirit Jersey for $79.99. It’s this cool dark blue, and you’ve got the Epcot logo front and center in a light blue puffy ink, super subtle but still popping. Then, on the back, “EPCOT” is huge in white puffy ink, with Figment just soaring over some cool blue and white lines. And guess what? Olaf, Groot, Remy, and Dory are all chillin’ against a backdrop of colorful blocks. Basically, it’s a squad goal on a shirt!
If you’re more of a hoodie person, the White Hoodie for $69.99 is where it’s at. It’s a zip-up, got those handy kangaroo pockets, and light blue drawstrings on the hood for a little pop. The zipper pull is the Epcot logo with those overlapping circles, which is a nice touch. That same logo is embroidered on the left breast, along with “EPCOT” logo in light blue, name in dark blue, so it all matches. But the real magic happens when you pull up the hood, because the inside is bursting with a colorful pattern of Epcot stuff, characters, neighborhood names, pavilion logos, iconic buildings… it’s like a mini Epcot map on your head!
And then the back? Spaceship Earth in white and blue, Figment chilling in a lightbulb hot air balloon (how cute is that?), Nemo riding some green waves, Rocket and Groot hanging out, and Mickey right in the middle. Crush is at the bottom, and they even worked in the neighborhood names: Celebration, Discovery, and Nature. Seriously, this hoodie is a whole vibe.
Now, let’s dive into the tees, because there are a few to choose from! The White T-Shirt for $34.99 is simple but cool. It’s white with contrasting dark blue stitching around the neck, sleeves, hem, and even curving around the sides. The best part? Down the back, you’ve got five Epcot pavilion logos: Imagination in dark blue, The Land in green, The Seas in blue, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in pink (yes!), and Mission: Space in orange. It’s like a subtle nod to all your favorite spots.
If you’re into a more classic look, the Gray T-Shirt for $29.99 is a heather-gray short-sleeved gem with a dark blue stripe across the chest. “EPCOT” is in white, framed by the Epcot logo and Spaceship Earth in blue. And of course, Figment, Mickey, Groot, and Dory are all there, chilling against vibrant colorful squares, with stars, dots, and curved lines adding to the fun.
For those who love a bold statement, the Pink Crop Top for $34.99 is hot pink with a white neckline and white and light blue stripes on the cuffs. Dory, Nemo, Rocket, and Groot are all over this one, plus the Nova Corps spaceship and Spaceship Earth. There are even orange lines connecting all the images super dynamic! And naturally, the Epcot wordmark and logo are at the top, along with the pavilion logos for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and The Seas With Nemo & Friends. Talk about a showstopper!
The Blue Polo for $49.99 is a little more understated but still totally Epcot. It’s light blue with two buttons, and on the left breast, you’ve got Figment flying across some cool World of Motion-inspired lines. The Epcot wordmark in white is right next to the park logo, perfect for a slightly dressier Epcot day.
And finally for the shirts, the Orange Raglan for $34.99 is a total winner. It’s got a white torso and short orange sleeves, with “EPCOT” in light blue across the chest. The park logo is in hot pink next to the name, and below them, you’ve got the park’s pavilion logos repeating in various colors. Spaceship Earth is chilling in the bottom corner of the front, and the back is even more intense with blue lines, Spaceship Earth, the Nova Corps ship, and tons of characters. So much to see!
Now, you gotta carry your stuff, right? The Loungefly Mini Backpack for $79 is mainly dark blue and covered in that awesome all-over pattern from the rest of the merch, characters, logos, you name it. There’s a pleather patch of Figment on the front pocket, and both pockets have cool silvertone zippers. The pattern even continues onto the back, and it’s got dark blue patterned straps and trim. And if you’re not a full backpack person, there’s a matching Loungefly Belt Bag for $65 with the same pattern, a front zip pocket, and even a small card-sized pocket on the back. It’s got a solid dark blue adjustable strap, perfect for keeping your essentials close.
And what about staying hydrated? The Corkcicle Tumbler for $54.99 is the same dark blue as the Spirit Jersey, with a pattern of characters and neighborhood imagery around the top. Near the base, Figment is there in his lightbulb balloon, so cute! It’s got an orange cap and a translucent straw, and it holds a generous 30 oz. Perfect for all your Epcot adventures.
For your morning coffee (or whatever you prefer), the Spaceship Earth Mug for $19.99 is sculpted just like the real Spaceship Earth, with its three-dimensional paneling. The top, bottom, and handle are light gray, and there’s a flat dark blue stripe around the center with characters like Nemo, Crush, Figment, Mickey, Chip, and Dale, highlighted with colorful lines and boxes. The Epcot wordmark and pavilion logos are on there too – this mug is basically a miniature Epcot in your hand!
And finally, for those who like to commemorate their trips with a little something special, the Shot Glass for $9.99 is perfect. Spaceship Earth is on one side in blue with white lines, and “EPCOT” is right below it. On the other side, Figment is flying over dark blue lines. Cheers to Epcot!
