We’ve Got Details on High School Musical: The Musical

High School Musical: The Musical

Where are my Wildcats at?! We’ve got High School Musical: The Musical details for you!

This will be a 10-episode show set to debut on Disney’s still unnamed digital streaming service. It will be shot docu-style with the audience meeting and following a group of students and their theacher at East High.  These students are gearing up for their winter theater production of High School Musical.  Although they soon learn that the stage isn’t the only place you’ll find drama.

Fans of the original movie musical will be excited to hear that each episode will feature a new rendition of a song they know and love.  But there will also be one original song in each episode – which I’m really looking forward to!

Tim Federle (Ferdinand) and Oliver Goldstick (Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars) are serving as executive producers. Casting is being done by Julie Ashton who is currently searching for eight series regulars.

Casting is underway for Ricky, the star and Nini’s ex.  He joined the musical to win her back.  Nini is a born star, especially after she got a confidence boost at summer camp starting as the lead in The Music Man. She’s come back with a new boyfriend after her summer away. That new love is E.J., who is ambitious and also auditioning for the lead role in the musical!

Ashlyn is the bold and brash new girl and E.J.’s cousin.  Then there is Big Red, Ricky’s life-long wingman! He may or may not have a crush on his best friend’s ex, Nini. Gina is a pro with an equity card who worries that her best days are behind he and Vikram is the captain of the color guard and student choreographer of the musical.  Rounding out the cast is the new drama teacher, Miss Jenn.

A release date has not yet been set, but this show has all the makings of a showstopper!

Disneyland Resort Engineers Transform 8,900 Canned Goods into Giant Jack-Jack

Jack-Jack

The Disneyland Resort Design and Engineering team CAN make an incredible difference for the Orange County Food Bank. Overnight on Aug. 31, they transformed 8,900 canned goods into a towering 10-foot Jack-Jack, and his cookie num nums, from Disney·Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” for the 11th annual CANstruction Orange County. Jack-Jack will be on display at South Coast Plaza through September.

Jack-Jack is the Disneyland Resort’s 11th structure built from canned goods since the inception of CANstruction Orange County, which supports the Orange County Food Bank. The structures have produced the equivalent of three meals a day for a family of three for 11 years.

Andy Flores is an associate engineer at Disneyland Resort and states, “Teamwork is key to our role as designers here at Disney. It’s natural for us to carry that approach into the CANstruction project every year. We utilize the talents of graphic designers, architects, engineers and we develop some other specialized skills to accomplish our finished sculpture.”

The annual competition is a unique way to give back. “I’ve been participating in this competition for a few years now because I’m just so impressed by the concept behind it,” said Disneyland Resort Staff Engineer Tim Angers. “Could we just donate a huge pile of cans? Sure. But doing it this way – it increases public awareness. It shows people how big the need really is and hopefully, we can make a bigger difference than just the cans we donate.”

Disney VoluntEARS designed Jack-Jack over a period of six months and joined local architectural design firms in building creative structures for the design-build competition. The structures can be viewed in September at South Coast Plaza, John Wayne Airport and the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) before the food is donated to the Orange County Food Bank. Supporters can vote for their favorite structures online; $1 equals one vote and the proceeds go to the Orange County Food Bank.

“Disney cast members have helped educate people about the issue of hunger in a creative and compelling manner through magical and visually stunning structures that have entertained people,” said Mark Lowry, director of the OC Food Bank. “But most importantly, they have provided additional food to expand the capacity of the OC Food Bank to combat hunger.”

Through CANstruction Orange County and food drives, the Disneyland Resort has provided the OC Food Bank more than 69,000 meals for the local community over the last 11 years. Disney VoluntEARS regularly assist in quarterly food packing events, and in 2017, volunteered more than 1,800 hours at the food bank.

Freeform Announces “Party of Five” Reboot

Freeform Announces “Party of Five” Reboot With An Interesting Modern Twist

Freeform announces “Party of Five” reboot with an interesting modern twist… The 1990s are back (sort of)! A “Party of Five” pilot has just been announced by Freeform, Disney’s young adult cable network. But, this reboot has a definite twist from the groundbreaking original series. This new iteration of “Party of Five” follows the five Buendías children as they struggle to survive together as a family after their parents are deported to Mexico.

Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman wrote the pilot for “Party of Five” with Michal Zebede (“Castle”) and Rodrigo Garcia (“Nine Lives”) is set to direct. Keyser, Lippman and Garcia will executive produce and Zebede serves as co-executive producer.

“Twenty-five years ago, we imagined a story about five kids navigating the world after the untimely death of their parents,” said executive producers Amy Lippman and Christopher Keyser. “Today, stories of families being separated, children having to raise themselves in the wake of their parents’ deportations, don’t require any imagination; they are everywhere. This new iteration of ‘Party of Five’ isn’t a retread of the original; it’s a whole new look at kids trying to parent each other in the wake of circumstances beyond their control, yet learning a similar lesson: that families persist no matter how great the obstacles.”

“From the moment we heard that Amy and Chris were updating their iconic series with this timely and powerful twist, we knew we had to have this pilot. We’re honored to be the home for the next, brilliant iteration of their vision,” said Karey Burke, Freeform’s executive vice president of Programming and Development.

Freeform’s growing slate of original scripted dramas includes new hits “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger,” and “Siren,” critically acclaimed “The Bold Type,” and the upcoming series “Good Trouble” from the executive producers of “The Fosters.”

Magic Kingdom’s Club 33 Is Now Visible Without Scrims

Magic Kingdom's Club 33

Hi, Chip and Co fans! We stopped by Adventureland for a quick peek at the construction progress of the future Magic Kingdom’s Club 33 location happening at the Adventureland Veranda. We were happily surprised to see that the large green scrim walls that previously lined the walkways have disappeared.

As you can see the construction has extended all the way to the entrance bridge to Adventureland. Both the location of the structure and that it is two stories, is going to give Club 33 members a great climate-controlled view of Happily Ever After at Cinderella Castle!

Once complete, there will be a total of four Club 33 locations at Walt Disney World – one in each of the four parks. Currently, the location inside Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios are open. The location at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is still under construction as well.

As reported by Orlando Theme Park News, this Club 33 location will be known as Captain’s Quarters. The lounge will be themed after Skipper Canteen and will actually be using a dining room originally built for the restaurant when it opened back in 2015.

Disney World Workers Vote For Historic Wage Increase

Disney World Workers Vote For Historic Wage Increase

Walt Disney World union employees voted almost unanimously to approve a new contract – including an historic wage increase.

Today was the final day of voting by Walt Disney World union employees on a new contract. This newly approved contract will increase the starting minimum wage for almost half of the parks’ employees to $15 per hour over  span of the next three years.

This new contract came out of months of negotiations between Disney and the unions. The last time the unions voted on a proposed contract they almost unanimously voted to reject it.  That was back in December of 2017.

Also as a part of this new contract will be a $1,000 bonus for workers from the six union involved in the negotiations. With this new contract, however, Disney will be allowed to utilize more part-time employees. Disney will also be able to utilized more random drug testing.

“Our 50 percent wage increase will have a real, meaningful impact on our Cast and their families—and is part of our commitment to the thousands of Cast Members who make magic for our guests each and every day,” said George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “Increasing wages for Cast Members represents a significant investment in Central Florida, and will provide a powerful boost to the local economy.”

Walt Disney World employees began voting yesterday and the voting was over today at 6pm EST. 13,673 Cast Members turned out to vote on this history-making contract over the two day period.  Of those who voted, 116 employees voted against the contract.  Meaning 13,557 Walt Disney World Cast members, or 99.15% of those who cast a vote did so to approve this contract.

Orlando Weekly was in the room when the results were announced.  Check out the video capture here:

Here are more specifics of the new contract, straight from Disney:

This industry-leading shift to $15 an hour will be phased in over the next three years beginning in December when starting pay for hourly, non-tipped Cast Members will increase to $11 an hour. In March 2019, starting rates will rise to $12 an hour; $13 an hour in September 2019; $14 an hour in October 2020; and finally, $15 an hour in October 2021.

Eligible Cast Members will also receive retroactive pay of 50 cents an hour or 3 percent, whichever is greater, dating back to Sept. 24, 2017; they will also receive a one-time, $1,000 bonus. Additionally, the increase will substantially raise the earning potential of current Cast Members whose pay is already above $10 an hour, giving them at least $4.75 an hour more by October 2021.

This collective bargaining agreement runs through October 2022.

Union representatives are considering this a pretty big win today!  And knowing how much of an influence the Walt Disney World Resort has over the Orlando area and the other theme parks found there, it is possible to see the impact of this vote spread beyond Disney.
