New Magic Shot Available Featuring Kevin from Up

Kevin Magic Shot

There is a brand new magic shot available at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park featuring Kevin from the Pixar movie Up. Kevin is a giant, tropical bird discovered by Russell during the movie and ends up needing to be saved from the evil Charles Mintz. Russell names Kevin shortly after meeting him but soon discovers that Kevin is actually a female with babies. Kevin, the chocolate bar loving friend of Russell, Mr. Fredricksen and Dug the dog can now be featured in your Disney Photopass pictures.

Disney Photopass photographers are located in numerous areas around each park and select resorts. Any Disney Photopass photographer in Asia or Discovery Island at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that is not located at a Character Experience is able to capture Kevin in your magic shot. Other magic shots at Animal Kingdom include Pascal from Disney’s Tangled, a Banshee from Pandora – The World of Avatar and a Wilderness sash as worn by Russell in Up.

What has been your favorite magic shot?

As a continuation of the “Stories from Walt’s Office” series, we’ll soar into the world of one of Walt’s favorite pastimes and look at the history behind the company airplane he used to scout Central Florida looking for the perfect place to build his second theme park.
  • A “Darling” Conversation with Wendy & John: Kathryn Beaumont and Paul Collins – Join Disney Legend Kathryn Beaumont (the voice of Wendy) and Paul Collins (the voice of John) as they reunite for the first time in many years to reminisce and discuss their experiences working on Peter Pan, meeting Walt Disney and learning to fly … literally.

Our short film will look at who they were and the parts they played in one of the most remarkable team of artists that ever worked together.

  • Deleted Song: “Never Smile at a Crocodile” – With music played over static concept art of the crocodile from Pater Pan.
  • Deleted Song: “The Boatswain Song” – With music played over static concept art of Captain Hook and his crew.
  • Deleted Scene: “The Journey Home” – A proposed alternate ending where Peter asks the Lost Boys to return home with Wendy and the other children.

Toy Story Play Time Mini-Games

Have you had a chance to experience “Slinky Dog Stretch” at https://www.toystoryplaytime.com yet? It’s one of three mini-games Disney has put together for us to enjoy as we wait for Toy Story Land to open June 30th.

Slinky Dog Stretch has you follow the paw prints as quickly as possible before Slinky’s tail catches up to the rest of him.

During our behind the scenes tour of Toy Story Land today we had a chance to learn that 2 new mini-games are being released to Toy Story Play Time! They will be released tomorrow but we have a sneak peek just for our readers!

Cute and Sweet Her Universe Fantasyland Dress

Fantasyland Dress

Have you seen the gorgeous Her Universe Fantasyland dress from Disneyland yet? It’s similar to the other Fantasyland Dress, but while that one pairs more of a homage to Walt Disney World, this one captures the beauty of Disneyland.

This dress has a soft pink color, with pastel accents in blues and purples. The Castle is nestled among iconic attractions like “it’s a small world” the Sword in the Stone, and The Mad Tea Party. I love that the neckline and bodice of this dress has nods to Aurora’s classic dress, complete with a blue collar, in case we still haven’t decided on Team Pink, or Team Blue. You can find this Her Universe dress at the Dress Shop at Le Bat en Rouge in New Orleans Square, in Disneyland.

What do you think of the Disneyland version of the Fantasyland Dress?

First Look at New Photos from Toy Story Land

Toy Story Land Photos

The opening date of Toy Story Land is getting closer and closer. It is getting really exciting seeing all of the new installations and construction being finished as we hit the home stretch before June 30th arrives. Today a brand new sign has just been installed inside Toy Story Land only a few hours ago.

This sign is made to look like one of Andy’s wooden toy block creations. “Toy Story” is displayed on a large wooden Yo-Yo while “LAND” is spelled out using four wooden letter blocks that are each two feet by two feet by two feet in size. Woody will be installed next to the sign in the next few days.

First Look at New Photos from Toy Story Land

We can also see green army men stationed around Slinky Dog Dash, protecting the perimeter. Slinky Dog has been riding the coaster every day. And we have been told he is very happy to be there and riding along his new track.

We got a little sneak preview of Toy Story Land today. Check out our video of Christopher Stewart, General Manager and David Minichiello, Executive Creative Director of Toy Story Land as they give us a little more details on what has been happening behind the scenes.

Disney’s Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom

Disney's Animal Kingdom

As far back as we can remember, Disney has created opportunities for us to “fawn” over animals such as Bambi, Abu, and Simba. 20 years ago, Disney created the opportunity for us to come and adore the same types of animals in person, right at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This would not be able to happen without Disney’s Animal Care Experts on call tending to all of the animals and their needs.

Disney's Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom

With animals on site, and their babies popping up over time, it is essential that there are experts on staff who are able to care for the animals. The past few months alone, Animal Kingdom has seen the birth of Sumatran Tiger cubs (Anala and Jeda) and a baby Nile hippo (Augustus).

Animal Kingdom Sumatran TigerZoological Manager Kristen Wolfe explained that it can take up to 3 years planning for a baby to enter the park. It involves making sure there is enough room in the park and matching potential mother and fathers based on temperament, genetics, and recommendations from Species Survival Plan coordinators. This is exactly the type of planning that went into Sohni’s (the mother of Anala and Jeda) pregnancy.

Disney's Animal Care Experts at Animal Kingdom

Jill Piltz, another Zoological Manager, and her team were responsible for monitoring Sohni’s pregnancy and delivery, which they were able to observe through a camera system. The team then had the privilege of naming the cubs: Anala, which means “feisty” or “fiery” due to her big personality and Jeda, which means “pause” since he has markings resembling the pause symbol. The cubs are now eight months old with Anala weighing in at 88.5 pounds and Jeda topping his sister at 92 pounds.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to one of the largest bloats (a group of hippos) in North America. It had been 13 years since the last baby hippo, so Wolfe and her team worked with the Species Survival Plan to determine the best candidate to become the next mother. Due to her ability to tell other hippos what to do, Tuma was determined to be the best candidate for delivering a baby hippo and acclimating it to the bloat.

Baby hippo

As Tuma’s delivery grew near, the team kept a close eye on her and continued to do so for Augustus’ first eight weeks of life. As Augustus learned “how to behave” within the group, his mother’s overprotectiveness began to fade. “Just like a kid, if he does something that gets him in trouble, he learns not to do that again,” explained Wolfe. “What people don’t realize is that hippo behaviors are a lot like human behaviors- there’s that growing and learning period for them that we need to let happen.”

Animal Kingdom's baby hippo

The key approach Disney’s Animal Care Experts take is letting the animals learn for themselves.“The animals teach their babies all the natural behaviors they should, and then someday, when those babies become parents on their own, they already know all those behaviors because they learned them from mom growing up,” Piltz says.

Disney’s Animal Care Experts make sure the animals feel like cast members are keeping their distance, but the cast members are grateful for the brief interactions they do have as it reminds them of how fortunate they are to witness the lives and world of these wild animals. “Last night I took two seconds to sit down at the computer and write a work order, and I look over—and the office door is open—to see a rhino off in the distance, eating dinner. And there are people on this earth that will never see a live rhino ever,” Wolfe shared.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Tiger

Piltz agrees that simple moments can have the most profound impact. “With the Sumatran tiger cubs, you see new behavior. Seeing them wrestle with a coconut and play with it…Those are the moments that you’ve got to just stop, watch, and take a moment and enjoy it. You’re working with endangered species that are very rare on this planet and they’re awesome animals.”
