Water Almost Fully Drained from Rivers of America as Work Begins on New Cars Land

The transformation of Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland is officially underway, and it’s making quite a splash — or in this case, a drain. The Rivers of America is now almost completely empty as crews begin work on Walt Disney World’s newest expansion: Piston Peak, a Cars-themed land inspired by the Pixar franchise.

The area closed back on July 7th, 2025, marking the end of an era for Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and the classic raft ride to the island. Now, those waterways are being reshaped into something brand-new. Our photos from this week show the riverbed nearly drained, exposing the old track that once guided the riverboat.

Piston Peak is set to bring a fresh spin on Cars Land with a rugged, National Park-inspired look. Instead of sticking to Radiator Springs, Imagineers are sending Lightning McQueen and friends out west to explore a new frontier. The land draws heavily from real-world landscapes like Rocky Mountain National Park and Bryce Canyon while weaving in storytelling threads from Disney’s own history.

Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro summed up the expansion by saying: “The American West has always been about keeping your eyes on the horizon … believing in yourself, carving your own path, and striving toward success. That goes for miners in the mountains, bears from the country, a princess from the bayou … or a racecar from the big city.”

What’s Coming to Piston Peak

  • Rally Race Attraction – This off-road adventure will send guests racing across rugged mountain terrain, dodging geysers, and splashing through mud holes. The queue will be themed to a National Park visitor lodge, complete with towering A-frame architecture and plenty of “Parkitecture” nods.
  • Meet Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore – A brand-new Cars-universe character, inspired by Disney’s classic Ranger Woodlore, will welcome guests to Piston Peak.
  • Immersive Design – Buildings will feature “car-ified” details, from oversized doors and windows for vehicles to rustic touches like wagon wheels used as architectural elements. Imagineers promise waterfalls, shaded trails, and plenty of nods to the great outdoors — including a geyser called “Old Tankful,” a playful tribute to Yellowstone’s Old Faithful.

The area will sit right next to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is currently closed until 2026 for a refresh that will incorporate rainbow geysers and subtle Cars details to tie it into Piston Peak.

Construction Timeline

  • July 7, 2025 – Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, Liberty Square Riverboat, and the Frontierland train station officially closed.
  • 2025–2026 – Ongoing construction of Piston Peak and reimagining of Big Thunder Mountain.
  • Beyond 2026 – Guests will be able to experience this high-octane new land as part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history, which also includes a planned Villains Land nearby.

The road to Piston Peak has just begun, and while it’s tough to say goodbye to beloved classics, it’s clear Disney is driving full speed ahead into a new frontier.

All-New Horrors

This year’s Howl-O-Scream introduces terrifying new houses and scare zones designed to prey on your deepest fears.

NEW! M.A.R.S.: Step aboard the starship Elysium, which has crash-landed on Mars. The crew is gone, replaced by aggressive, insect-like alien creatures. Your mission is simple: reach the ship’s core and destroy it before the infestation spreads—or you become a permanent part of the doomed crew.

NEW! Ravens Mill – Lambs to Slaughter: This fan-favorite returns with a sinister upgrade. Once a thriving farm, Raven’s Mill now grinds flesh and bone. Scarecrows stitched from the remains of the missing stand guard as you step deeper into a nightmare where the harvest is far more disturbing than grain.

NEW! The Pestilence: In this plague-ravaged town, gas-masked Mob Doctors decide who lives and who is dragged to the Ashen Furnace. No one knows why they are chosen, and no one escapes. A whispered “It’s only a precaution” is all you get before the fear consumes you.

The park is also adding two more new scare zones. In Breadcrumbs to Nowhere, a rotting cottage in Havenwood Forest lures you with the scent of sugar and the lies of a forgotten fairy tale. And in Murders at Buckshot Ridge, a cursed logging camp has turned its workers into something else entirely, as the forest itself takes revenge.

Packing your bags for Destination D23? Don’t forget your shopping bags! Mickey’s of Glendale, the exclusive Walt Disney Imagineering campus store, is returning to the fan-favorite event with a brand new lineup of exclusive merchandise. The collections, designed by the very Imagineers and storytellers who bring Disney magic to life, are inspired by Disney Parks attractions, global destinations, and the spirit of Imagineering itself.

Here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect to find.

The Passport Collection

For Destination D23’s “Journey Around the Worlds of Disney” theme, Lead Concept Designer Mike Quinn created the Passport Collection to capture the spirit of travel and discovery. This graphic-driven collection is inspired by global transit systems and uses bold, minimalist designs.

“With the overarching theme of travel, I wanted to do something unique and different, both visually and conceptually,” Quinn said. “And of course, something bold and graphic that would work well on a t-shirt.”

A fun detail of the collection is the use of metro iconography—those simple, graphic symbols often seen on urban transit signs. Upon closer inspection, you’ll see they are coded with abbreviations for the Disney parks where the attractions are located.

Disney Destinations Collection

If you prefer to take to the skies, buckle up for the Disney Destinations collection. Product Designer Tyler Krantz created a whimsical collection that celebrates the global reach of Disney parks. The artwork is inspired by the vibrant, mid-century style of legendary Disney artist Mary Blair.

The collection connects all six Disney castles through playful illustrations featuring airborne characters like Dumbo, Goofy in his prop plane, and the beloved Orange Bird taking flight.

“I was inspired by Mary Blair’s work on the classic attraction ‘it’s a small world’ and her imaginative concept art for Disney’s iconic mid-century films,” Krantz said. “This collection captures the hopeful tone, stylized shapes, and bold colors of Mary Blair’s work.”

For Krantz, one piece holds a lot of personal meaning: the Disneyland Resort pin. “Disneyland and Disney California Adventure were the very first Disney parks I visited, all the way back in 2001!”

The Muppets Studio Collections

Mickey’s of Glendale is celebrating The Muppets’ 70th anniversary in a big way with not one, but three exclusive Muppets-themed collections. Much of the merchandise was designed by Dani Iglesias, a producer for The Muppets Studio and a huge fan.

“If you had told me as a kid that someday I’d be designing for The Muppets, I’d never have believed it,” Iglesias said. “My design process is all about keeping one foot in the past and one foot in the future — honoring the history of these beloved characters but also allowing the franchise to evolve.”

Son of Jim Henson says Muppets Vision D Animatronics have been Preserved in Case of Return

Here’s what to look for:

  • The Muppets Studio Black & Gold Collection: A sleek, classic lineup featuring the studio logo on a new Spirit Jersey and a crew cap.
  • Kermit Takeover Capsule: A soft, summery, lime-green takeover starring everyone’s favorite frog.
  • The Muppets 70: #1–35 Collection: Inspired by the first 35 characters spotlighted in the anniversary campaign, this nostalgic collection includes cozy apparel and fun home goods.

Iglesias is particularly excited about the 70th-anniversary sweatshirt. “It’s got over a dozen characters in the Muppet Show-style arches. It’s so soft and cozy — it’s definitely going in my closet!”

Even More Magic Awaits

In addition to these spotlighted collections, guests will also find an entirely new collection of Walt Disney Imagineering merchandise. Whether you’re a collector, a parks history buff, or just a fan of bold, original design, there’s something for everyone at Mickey’s of Glendale at Destination D23.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s Website Gets a New Description

The wildest ride in the wilderness is getting a spooky new story! Walt Disney World has updated the official Big Thunder Mountain Railroad website with a new description and concept art, teasing what’s to come for the classic attraction.

big thunder

The ride is currently undergoing a refurbishment to keep the experience in top shape and is scheduled to reopen in 2026.

The new details reveal that the attraction will introduce “new magic” for fans to discover, including a journey through the stunning Rainbow Caverns. However, the new description hints that these caverns “may not be as welcoming as they first appear,” suggesting a new, eerie twist to the classic adventure.

A Deeper Dive into the Wild Story
Disney’s updated website now shares a more detailed backstory for the ride. The new storyline begins with Barnabas T. Bullion, a gold prospector who struck it rich in the Big Thunder region. However, as the mining company dug deeper, mysterious and unexplainable things began to happen, as if the mountain itself was fighting back.

This sets the stage for your journey. Guests will still descend into an active mine shaft and board a runaway train, dodging dynamite and falling boulders. But now, it’s clear that the rip-roaring adventure is a fight against the very mountain you’re exploring. The official description ends with a thrilling promise: “Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!”

Disney Cast Members Unveil New Pirate Attire

Ahoy! Disney Cast Members at Pirates of the Caribbean have officially debuted new costumes. The fresh look is part of an effort to refresh the entire attraction, bringing new energy and a cohesive style to the crew.

potc

The Magic Kingdom version of the attraction has a new update: Disney Cast Members can now mix and match their personal uniforms from a new collection of costume options. This new “pick-and-choose” style is similar to the costuming at other recent Walt Disney World attractions.

This costume change comes just before the grand opening of The Beak and Barrel, a new pirate-themed tavern taking over the space once home to The Pirates League. Disney Cast Members working at the new tavern, as well as the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and the gift shop (Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar), will all share the same costume options. This will create a cohesive look for the entire area without every Cast Member having an identical style.

The Beak and Barrel opens on August 29. Reservations opened on Wednesday, August 20, at 7 p.m. ET.

Family crafts and photo opportunities

  • Overflowing with images, colors and symbols, the Árbol de la Vida (Tree of Life) provides a vibrant backdrop for photos. Its branches sprout flowers, animals and evocative calacas (skeletons) interconnected by the theme of family.
  • At the Memory Wall, guests can add remembrance notes to honor their loved ones.
  • Plaza de la Familia visitors may design their own paper mask of Pepita or Dante from “Coco”, inspired by alebrijes. (Traditional alebrijes are small figurines representing fantastical creatures with a mix of physical characteristics from many different animals.)
  • After each performance of “The Storytellers of Plaza de la Familia Celebrate The Musical World of Coco!”, guests may pose for photos and make new memories with Miguel, brought to life as a hand-animated dimensional figure. He and his performer appear at a beautiful artistic mural entitled “Recuérdame” (“Remember Me”), the iconic song from the film.
  • Miguel’s Memory Box art piece is an homage to Miguel’s beloved family members and the friends he meets on his travels in the Land of the Dead.

Tributes to Día de los Muertos across Disneyland Resort

  • Guests cruising through Cars Land will find that Ramone, one of the local “car-acters,” pays tribute to Día de los Muertos at his detailing shop, Ramone’s House of Body Art, with a traditional ofrenda display honoring Doc Hudson.

The magnificent installation features marigolds and banners of papel picado, along with two traditional ofrendas, sugar skulls known as calaveras and an iconic figure of La Catrina. The Rancho del Zócalo Restaurante offers delicious Mexican cuisine for lunch and dinner year-round.
cars land

At Disney California Adventure Park, Lightning McQueen, Mater and the “car-acters” of Cars Land transform the town of Radiator Springs into Radiator Screams for Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort, Aug. 22-Oct. 31, 2025. As part of their Haul-O-Ween celebration, the local residents decorate their establishments and don their favorite “car-stumes.” Two family-friendly attractions receive seasonal transformations, revved up with themed décor and unique music: Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree becomes Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree, and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters becomes Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween.

Fun facts about Haul-O-Ween at Cars Land

  • Scary the Scare-car greets guests as they enter Radiator Screams. Guests can hear the lore behind how Scary came to be while riding Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween.
  • At Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree, the tractors spin to Haul-O-Ween themed takes on the popular songs: “Monster Mash” (“Monster Truck Smash”) and “Purple People Eater” (“Purple Fender Bender”).
  • Guests can discover Sarge’s patch of seasonal pump-kins. He plans on gifting these gas cans on a vine to his neighbor, Fillmore, to make some “organic fuel.”
  • The resident cars get into the Haul-O-Ween spirit with fun “car-stumes.” Mater dresses up as a “van-pire,” Lightning McQueen is a super hero and Red the Fire Truck is a clown.
  • In the lobby of the Cozy Cone Motel, Sally displays a themed miniature model of the motel made of candy.
  • Guests will find 30 “car-achnids” lurking around Radiator Screams! One of which is an eight-legged Spider-car at Flo’s V8 Cafe, made from a repurposed “Toadmobile” from Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. It’s a great photo opportunity!
  • An out-of-service “zombie” car with an undead battery refuses to “rust in pieces” as it attempts to come back to life in front of Lizzie’s Radiator Springs Curios. Contrary to popular rumor, these are not the remains of her beloved Stanley.
  • Each evening, Cars Land is taken over by supernatural spirits for a haunting Sha-BOO! Sheriff’s voice can be heard returning the town to order and welcoming guests to Radiator Screams.
  • Luigi and Guido never celebrated Haul-O-Ween before moving to Radiator Springs. Now it’s their favorite holiday, and they’re inviting the cousins to celebrate at Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween. Their “Terror-antella” tells the story of how Luigi and Guido built the town’s beloved Scare-car, Scary.
  • The mysterious Horn-O-Plenty was unearthed on Haul-O-ween Night in 1936. Every year, the residents of Radiator Screams bring it back to its rightful home and adorn it with seasonal gifts.
  • Strange things are brewin’ over at the old courthouse. A mad scientist has hooked up jumper cables, giving the old building new life (with moving eyes in the window).
  • A tempting menu of Halloween food and beverages is available throughout Cars Land, including a Slow Burnin’ mac and cheese cone, spicy chicken and fries, and a Mater Haul-O-Ween Cone.
  • Adding to the fall festivities, Ramone is celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) at his detailing shop, Ramone’s House of Body Art. Painted hoods, marigolds and a sugar car (named Sugar) decorate the outside. Inside, Ramone has built an “ofrenda” to celebrate the life and career of the town’s good friend, Doc Hudson.
Guardians of the Galaxy

Throughout the year, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! thrills guests with wild drops and an irreverent storyline at Disney California Adventure Park. Beginning in the late afternoon each day during Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort, Aug. 22-Oct. 31, 2025, the attraction transforms into Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. In this daring adventure, guests are in for a startling treat as creatures on the loose and Rocket scheming to save Groot add chaos to the high-energy action.

  • In Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, Rocket finds his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy trapped in the Fortress of The Collector, Taneleer Tivan, and guests assist him with a daring escape plan. The Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark transformation picks up moments afterward, as Rocket discovers that they have inadvertently left Groot behind. Rocket then enlists guests to distract the monsters unleashed inside the Fortress, while he rescues his little friend.
  • The attraction’s transformation happens later in the afternoon each day. The Collector’s Fortress goes dark, alarms sound and special lighting on the exterior of the Fortress alerts guests that something inside has gone awry. Guests may check the Disneyland app or Disneyland.com for the timing of this transformation.
  • Guests entering the lobby of the Fortress may be startled by flashing alarms and creepy sounds – warning signs that creatures have escaped their vitrine cages and chaos is erupting. The Collector’s ever-resourceful assistant Apheta tries to keep calm by reassuring guests that all is in order, and this is just a momentary setback.
  • An original 1970s-style punk rock song, “Monsters After Dark,” enhances the thrill of the experience. The song was written especially for the attraction by Tyler Bates, composer for the first two “Guardians of the Galaxy” films.

Seriously, you’ll feel like you’re heading to the ball every time you grab this bag. It’s the perfect way to add a little bit of that regal feel to any outfit, whether you’re dressing up or just running errands.

Next, we’re taking a trip to the Enchanted Forest with the Snow White Shimmer Crossbody Bag. This bag is a beautiful tribute to the OG Disney Princess. It’s got that same shimmery faux leather and elegant embroidered flowers, but the details are what make it truly special. The molded metal top handle is shaped like an apple, yes, a whole apple!, and there’s another cute apple charm on the front. It’s a chic, subtle nod to the classic story that any fan will appreciate. This is the bag you grab when you want to make a statement and show off your love for a timeless classic.

Finally, we’re sailing off to Motunui with the Moana Shimmer Crossbody Bag. This one is for all the adventurers out there. It features that beautiful shimmery faux leather with embroidered flowers, but the accents are pure Moana magic. The molded metal charm on the front is none other than the Heart of Te Fiti, and the top handle has a beautiful floral design. This bag just calls to you, ready to be a part of your next journey, whether it’s a big trip or just a day out with friends. It’s elegant, adventurous, and ready for anything, just like Moana herself.

Universal Studios Hollywood Introduces First-Ever Halloween Horror Nights Dining Pass

Universal Studios Hollywood is turning up the fear factor—and the flavor—for Halloween Horror Nights 2025, and this year’s event is serving up something brand-new: the Halloween Horror Nights Dining Pass. For the first time ever, guests can purchase a single pass that unlocks a feast of terrifyingly tasty treats across the park during HHN.

What Is the Dining Pass?

The HHN Dining Pass is designed to make sampling the event’s wild food lineup easier (and a little less haunting on your wallet). Each pass includes:

  • 6 total items: 2 entrées and 4 sides, snacks, desserts, or beverages
  • Eligible items clearly marked on participating menu boards with the Universal Dining Pass logo
  • Valid only on the date of purchase at HHN food and beverage locations

It’s a simple way for hungry haunt fans to dig into multiple creepy culinary creations without worrying about racking up receipts at every booth.

Fearsome Foods on the Menu

Executive Chef Julia Thrash and her team have gone all-out again this year, crafting immersive, horror-inspired bites tied to the event’s haunted houses and scare zones. Some highlights include:

  • Fallout Zone Bites: Loaded Cram Fries with chili-glazed spam, Roasted Radroach Legs (blackened turkey wings), Gulper Stew, and the Insta-worthy Rad Away lemonade served in a blood bag.
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s: Classic cheese and pepperoni pizza straight from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.
  • Terrifier Treats: Art’s Bloody Masterpiece Donut and lemon-raspberry Sunflower Glasses cookie sandwich.
  • Jason Universe BBQ: Pamela’s Smoked Brisket Mac & Cheese, a 22” Crystal Lake Campfire Dog, and Jason’s Mask S’more.
  • SLASH Bar: Thai tacos, Slash’s Top Hat sponge cake with mango-habanero gelee, and themed cocktails like Night Train and The Danse of the Dead.
  • Chucky’s Dive Bar: Creepy cocktails like Playtime’s Over and Friend Till the End topped with cotton candy.
  • Dia de Los Muertos Plaza: Birria tacos with red consomé, carne asada nachos, and a full lineup of colorful margaritas.
  • Universal Tower Snacks: Walking Tacos made with FRITOS® or Tostitos®, plus the CHEETOS® Flamin’ Hot Fire Dog.

Yes, even the Pickle Milk Shake–style oddities are in the mix, proving that HHN’s food offerings are as daring as its haunted houses.

Why This Pass Is a Game-Changer

Halloween Horror Nights has long been about more than just haunted houses. The food has become an attraction in its own right, and with menus themed to Fallout, Terrifier, Jason, Chucky, and more, the Dining Pass encourages guests to sample across the park instead of sticking to just one zone.

For frequent visitors or foodies tackling HHN on a single night, the Dining Pass is a smart way to maximize both value and variety. Considering entrée portions alone, the pass could easily save guests money compared to buying everything separately.

When and Where to Get It

The Halloween Horror Nights Dining Pass is available for purchase online in advance or at participating restaurants inside Universal Studios Hollywood. It’s only valid on the date selected, and restrictions apply.

With HHN running September 4 through November 2, 2025, this spooky new pass is sure to be a popular pick alongside Express passes and RIP Tours.

So whether you’re braving Monstruos 3, battling Denji’s foes in Chainsaw Man: The Chaos, or dodging chainsaws in Carnival of Carnage, you can fuel up with a meal plan that’s just as frightful as the haunted houses.
