Local Disney World Union Planning Protest for End of November
Disney and Local Disney World Unions have been going back and forth trying to reach an agreement for what seems like months now. However, in a recent post on the Local 737 Union Facebook group, the Local Cast Member Union is going to be taking its message to the streets.
Here are the details:
Yesterday and today we made very little progress in our negotiations with Disney. We continued to emphasize that a $1 raise in 2022 does not help workers live during historic inflation. When a company tells us “No,” we don’t back down.
So all 6 Unions decided that it is time to take our message to the public. We are planning a large protest on Wednesday, November 30. As soon as we have more details, we will share them here.”
UNITE HERE Local 737 is the proud union of workers in Walt Disney World Food & Beverage and Housekeeping, Palmas Services, Patina Restaurant Group, the Hilton Buena Vista Palace Resort & Spa, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at the Entrance to Universal Orlando and Centerplate at the Orange County Convention Center.
In 2018, unionized Disney workers negotiated to raise minimum wages from $10 to $15 — and even more for Housekeepers and Cooks. As other Orlando hospitality employers raised their workers’ pay to keep up with the union standard at Disney, tens of thousands of Orlando tourism workers finally achieved financial stability. For a time, a $15 wage put some families on track with a living wage.
But the skyrocketing cost of living has put Orlando tourism workers and their communities back in economic danger.

New Jersey Runner Megan Curham Wins Disney’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon Again!
New Jersey runner Megan Curham has made history once again at the 2022 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend and shows no signs of stopping.
For the fourth straight year, Curham, of Warren, New Jersey, easily completed the 13.1-mile course as the first female finisher with a time of 1:20:16, becoming the event’s only four-time champion. Ian Bordelon of Orlando was the race’s overall winner, crossing the finish line amid a light drizzle in 1:13:42.
It was just the latest milestone among Curham’s exploits at this race. A year ago, she became the only woman in runDisney history to repeat as an overall half marathon winner and established a race record finishing time.
“It’s just so much fun,’’ Curham said. “I think what’s been really neat is that all four of those years the course has been a little bit different. So, it’s always something a little bit unique. You never really know what you’re going to get.’’
This time the new wrinkle was a light rain and slightly humid Florida conditions, which conspired to slow Curham’s pace. Her winning time was nowhere near her record-setting pace from last year when she was the overall winner with a time of 1:15:33. Still, she finished comfortably ahead of Stephanie Muscat of Grand Rapids, Michigan (1:27:50) and Katrina Wraga of Toms River, New Jersey (1:30:44).
The conditions created a challenge for Ian Bordelon too, but not enough to keep him from leaving the field in his wake. After starting toward the back of his corral, he bolted to the lead after just about three miles. After that, he was essentially racing against himself more so than the other runners. Mike Sharkey of Broomfield, Colorado (1:18:51) came in second and Marcus Hershberger of Baltimore, Maryland (1:19:20) came in third.
“I was out there trying to run as fast as possible,’’ said Bordelon, whose wife was also in the race at 16 weeks pregnant. “Even when I saw that I had a pretty decent cushion, I was still pushing, trying to run as fast as I could today and racing (against) the clock.’’
Nicholas McCoy of Boerne, Texas (1:24:05) finished first in the wheelchair division followed by Julius McManus of Fort Washington, Florida (1:30:53).
The race was the final event of the race weekend, which included a 5K and a 10K, plus a health and fitness expo. In all, more than 30,000 runners took part in the four-day event. Next up in the runDisney race season is the 30th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, which is January 4-8, 2023.
Curham, though, couldn’t help but look further ahead to next year’s Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon where she could go for five in a row.
“I would love to come back. I love this (race) so much,’’ she said. “I mean, I just love coming to Disney too. It’s like a great excuse to go on vacation as well, so you really can’t beat it.’’

Tropical Storm watches have been posted for portions of Central Florida
The NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center has just issued Tropical Storm watches for portions of Central Florida due to Subtropical Storm Nicole.
Here is the most recent update:
At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the center of Subtropical Storm Nicole was about 495 miles (795 km) east of the northwestern Bahamas. The storm is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h). This motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected later today. A turn westward or west-southwestward is then forecast for Tuesday through early Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas on Tuesday, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida by Wednesday night.
Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days. Nicole is forecast to be at hurricane intensity by Wednesday or Wednesday night while it is moving near or over the northwestern Bahamas. Winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 275 miles (445 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches).
As you can see Tropical Storm watches have been issued for parts of Central Florida with more expected as Nicole gets closer to the state.
If you have a trip planned for Disney World, especially those going to the first Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party you will want to keep an eye on the weather as flights might get delayed and the theme parks might shut down once again.
Animal Kingdom is about to become an even more magical place. The holiday decorations have started arriving and we can hardly wait to see them completed!
Animal Luminaries
The animal luminaries have appeared atop the buildings and shops around the Tree of Life. They look beautiful even during the day as the sun lights them from behind.
Owls, squirrels, deer, birds, and foxes give an enchanted fairytale feel to the area.
As the evening hour sets in, the luminaries come to life and take on a warm glow.
Crane Sculptures
Beautiful crane sculptures dot the surrounding landscape. These beautiful birds will soon be lit with the same warm glow as the luminaries.
DinoLand is Getting Ready
As we enter DinoLand U.S.A. we see the giant dino over the Donald’s Dino-Bash sign also getting ready to celebrate the holidays! He is all decked out in Christmas lights and is just awaiting his merry beard and Santa hat.
Soon Dino-Land will be all decked out with its giant snowmen and Christmas trees.
Holiday Tree of Life Awaking Show
One of the most breathtaking things to see is the holiday overlay on the Tree of Life for the Tree of Life Awakenings show. These shows project beautiful images of the animals in winter scenes and are only shown once the park has grown dark. There are various different shows and if you have the time it’s worth staying to watch the full set cycle through.
Animal Kingdom’s holiday decor is not complete yet. The main tree at the entrance of the park has not been put up just yet, and many more decorations are still on the way.
I am really looking forward to the return of the Merry Menagerie puppets. Puppeteers interact with guests as they bring polar bears, foxes, and penguins to life. I love watching how kids and adults just light up at the interaction.
Santa’s Flotilla has been confirmed to be returning this year as well.
Get a sneak peek at the holiday decorations by checking out our link below.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing the parks come alive with all the holiday decor. In fact, I have such a hard time choosing my favorite park during this time of year!
What is your favorite park to visit during the holidays?
