Piston Peak Construction Charges Ahead as Massive Retaining Wall Nears Completion at Magic Kingdom
Construction on the future Piston Peak National Park expansion at Magic Kingdom is shifting into high gear, with new aerial photos revealing major progress on one of the project’s most significant infrastructure elements. Crews are now close to completing the massive retaining wall that will help shape the landscape of the new Cars-themed area coming to Frontierland.

Thanks to photos by bioreconstruct, we can see how the retaining wall stretches alongside the former Rivers of America area and runs nearly parallel to the Frontierland boardwalk. Recent construction activity shows crews filling the space between the wall and the existing park with large amounts of graded sand, helping establish the new terrain that will eventually become part of Piston Peak National Park. The wall extends toward Big Thunder Mountain Railroad before sloping down near the attraction, while construction barriers remain in place to shield guests from the ongoing work.

Elsewhere on the site, drainage infrastructure is beginning to take shape with large sections of pipe staged and ready for installation. The area surrounding the former Mike Fink Keel Boats landing continues to be transformed as Disney prepares the land for its ambitious new expansion. The historic Riverboat Landing itself is expected to remain and be incorporated into the new themed environment, providing a connection between Frontierland’s past and its future.

When complete, Piston Peak National Park will feature two new attractions, including an off-road rally race adventure and a family-friendly experience inspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars. The land will also introduce Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, a new original character inspired by classic Disney ranger Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore. Piston Peak is just one part of what Disney has described as the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, alongside the upcoming Disney Villains land being built beyond Frontierland. With earthwork, retaining walls, and infrastructure rapidly taking shape, the future of Frontierland is becoming easier to imagine with every construction update.
