Fast and Furious Hollywood Drift Begins Soft Openings at Universal Studios Hollywood
Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift has started technical rehearsals at Universal Studios Hollywood, putting guests on the new coaster sooner than many expected after recent noise complaints raised questions about whether its debut could be delayed.

The attraction quietly began welcoming riders on Monday, July 27, with no advance announcement from Universal. Technical rehearsals act as a soft opening, giving guests a chance to experience the coaster while crews continue testing operations ahead of its official debut. Universal has not announced a grand opening date, and availability is not guaranteed. The ride could open late, close early, experience extended downtime, or remain closed on certain days.
The start of public testing is especially notable after residents in nearby Toluca Lake complained about screams from riders during earlier test runs. The reports sparked online speculation that Universal might need to delay the attraction while addressing the noise. Universal has added sound-reduction features and barriers around portions of the coaster, and Hollywood Drift moving into technical rehearsals suggests the concerns have not stopped the company from putting the ride into operation.

Hollywood Drift reaches speeds of up to 72 mph along 4,100 feet of track, making it the fastest roller coaster in Universal’s global theme park lineup. The attraction includes four inversions and ride vehicles that rotate 360 degrees, creating a drifting sensation as guests race above and below the Starway escalators connecting the park’s Upper and Lower Lots.
The coaster trains are designed to resemble vehicles from the Fast & Furious franchise, including Dom Toretto’s Dodge Charger and Han’s Mazda RX-7. Custom engine and braking sounds add another layer to the experience as riders speed across the hillside.
Guests visiting Universal Studios Hollywood can now try their luck during technical rehearsals, but anyone planning a trip specifically around the coaster may want to wait until Universal confirms the official opening date.
