Noise Complaints Arise During Fast and Furious Hollywood Drift Testing at Universal Studios
More details are emerging about noise complaints tied to testing for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift at Universal Studios Hollywood. We previously reported that neighbors near the park had raised concerns about noise from the new coaster, and a recent Los Angeles Times report has now shared a closer look at how some nearby Toluca Lake residents are reacting as human rider testing continues.

According to the report, residents say the coaster itself had been relatively quiet during earlier testing, but the experience changed once human riders were added. Neighbors described hearing repeated screams from the ride, with one resident saying the sound was constant and piercing even through double-paned windows. Another longtime Toluca Lake resident said Universal Studios Hollywood had not traditionally felt like a “roller coaster kind of park,” noting that this new attraction feels different because of how close it sits to nearby homes.
Noise from Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift has been a concern for neighboring property owners since before construction began. Universal conducted sound testing back in 2023, and the coaster was designed with sound reduction technology. Earlier this year, sound shield panels were also installed along sections of the track. The panels feature white frames and green-tinted glass, matching the look of the covered walkway to the park’s Lower Lot, while also potentially helping protect guests below from loose items falling from the ride.
Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is shaping up to be a major addition for Universal Studios Hollywood. The new coaster will reach speeds of up to 72 mph, making it the fastest coaster at any Universal theme park. It will also feature four inversions along a 4,100-foot track, with ride vehicles designed to rotate 360 degrees as they simulate the drifting action of the Fast & Furious films. Because of the ride’s speed and design, Universal Studios Hollywood will also use double-sided lockers for loose items, a first for the park.

Universal has not yet announced an official opening date for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, though the ride has already appeared in the Universal Studios Hollywood app, suggesting opening preparations are moving along. Meanwhile, a Florida version of the attraction is also under construction at Universal Studios Florida, replacing Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which closed in August 2025.
