Disney World to remove all plastic silverware from theme parks

Disney World to remove all plastic silverware from theme parks

April is Earth Month and in celebration, Disney World is making an eco-friendly decision to remove all plastic silverware from their Florida theme parks starting today.

A few years back Disney decided to remove all plastic straws from the theme parks in an effort to protect wildlife, especially at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Guests could still ask for straws but they were no longer front and center at most quick-service restaurants. Some places like La Cava del tequila came up with replacement straws made with agave nectar instead of plastic. Love them! You can get your own reusable straws here.

Reusable Bags

Back in 2019 the Disney Store and many of the shops at Walt Disney World began the removal of plastic bags instead encouraging guests to use reusable bags as a way to save the environment. Who doesn’t have about a million of them at their house?

With the popularity of items like the spork (only $10.99) from Star Wars Galaxy’s edge and recently the all-new Disney Parks reusable bamboo utensils, it was an easy transition to removing plastic silverware from all theme parks.

So starting today Disney World is going to remove all plastic silverware from the theme parks and encourage guests to bring their own. I found some nice bamboo ones on Amazon here, or you can pick up the Disney Parks reusable ones that come with a nice carrying pouch.

For those guests visiting a sit-down restaurant there will be a .98 cent surcharge to use Disney’s metal silverware. This is for maintaining and upkeep of these items.

Many Disney Addicts are behind this decision:

I never really used them anyway…

With the increased handwashing and hand sanitizers around the theme parks, the spread of germs is pretty much non-existent so plastic silverware is not really needed anymore. Who really uses a fork to eat Mickey Popcorn?

For those guests visiting events like Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival and the upcoming Food and Wine Festival Disney is allowing those more eco-friendly guests to opt-out of using plates instead Disney Chefs will place the food items in your hands where you could just eat and go. Talk about convenience!

The removal of plastic silverware at the theme parks will save the company millions of dollars and prevent waste at local landfills. There is no information if this eco-friendly change will be coming to Disneyland when they reopen on April 30th!

  1. This “joke” is in poor taste and actually offensive to me. I DO carry my own straw and utensils and have for years. I make a lot of sacrifices to do my part. And we carry this through during our many many Disney trips. I would applaud Disney and any other company that would take this environmental stance. All the waste and trash created in a day at the park is sickening.

  2. That was kinda sad… For a second, I thought Disney was actually doing something earth conscious. A lot of restaurants in my neck of the woods use recycled paper straws so there was a grain of possibility. The part about placing food directly in hands though wouldn’t pass a food safety inspection so I knew you were full of baloney there!

  3. I agree with Ryan. I was believing this because of all the greedy decisions Disney has made over the last few years. Can see by the comments people didn’t read the article all the way to the end.

  4. Even though this is a joke, bringing your own silverware is a good idea. We have these really nice plastic utensils that work as a knife, fork and spoon. They are especially good for the festivals were you would quickly go through a lot of plasticware.

  5. After how nutty things have been with COVID and life being turned pretty much upside down as a result, there have been many changes for all, including Disney. So to post something like that as a joke is in extremely bad taste, IMO. Then at the end it says “Follow us on social media!” Fat chance! After deliberately spreading misinformation like that?!? Not funny, not cool. I’ll stick to reliable and reputable sources.

  6. You lost me with “guests encouraged to bring their own” . Thats what gave you away. Until that, totally believable.

  7. So Disney is going to save $$$$ not providing plastic utensils. They want you to bring your own. Then they want to add a surcharge to the already over-priced food at table service places. This isn’t being “eco-friendly”. This is pure GREED!!!

  8. I actually liked this idea. I have a old army mess kit in my desk at work because I was tired of always looking for utensils and plates. I was planning on bringing it on my next trip. Oh well…

  9. So not only do you break the bank to visit the park but now you have to bring your own utensils? Ridiculous!!! Plastic is pretty universally recycled. Looks like the corporate machine wants to put more burden on the common man only to reap the profits. Hopefully now I can send a little less. I’m not going to count on it though.

  10. I was actually upset to find out that this is an April Fool’s joke, because there are a lot of good ideas in here. Maybe not the charge for using metal flatware at Disney’s TS restaurants, but everything else sounded great! I’d love to see Disney switch from plastic utensils to bamboo/wooden utensils, and encourage people to bring their own utensils by selling fun Disney-themed travel utensils. (That Galaxy’s Edge spork is a brilliant functional souvenir.) Anywhere we can realistically stop adding waste to landfills is a good thing!

  11. i have no problem with Disney eliminating plastic ware but I do think it is wrong to charge a customer extra at a sit down restaurant for silverware. That is cheap and distasteful. Disney is better than that.

  12. You got me. You got me good. And yet…. Disney has lost their minds to the point that this could easily happen in the future.
