Disney+ Orders 'Doogie Howser' Reboot Series

Disney+ Orders ‘Doogie Howser’ Reboot Series. The original 90’s series, Doogie Howser, M.D. was featured on ABC from 1989-1993 and now the popular series is getting a reboot on Disney+, only this time with the working title “Doogie Kealoha, M.D.” The reboot was officially ordered by Disney+ in an announcement on Thursday Sept. 10th.

“Thirty years ago, a young medical prodigy took the world by storm and left a lasting impact on pop culture,” said Ricky Strauss, president, Content and Marketing, Disney+. “Kourtney and the team at 20th Television have created a very modern take on this beloved property which will resonate with our global Disney+ audience. We can’t wait to introduce the world to the new Doogie!”

“Doogie, Howser MD is beloved by everyone at our studio, so we knew that if we were going to reinvent it for a new generation, we had to have both the blessing and participation of the Bochcos and a creator with a fresh, new take that made us lean in,” added 20th Century Television President, Carolyn Cassidy. “Kourtney’s vision for the character is so inspired, we’ve been dying to collaborate with Melvin and Jake again, and Disney+ is exactly the right home for this idea. We couldn’t be more excited.”

The reboot will follow a 16 year-old girl from Hawaii with mixed ethnicity (half Asian-half White). Kourtney Kang (How I Met Your Mother, Fresh Off the Boat) will be developing the series for 20th Century TV and Disney. Executive Producers for the reboot include Kourtney Kang, Jake Kasdan, and Melvin Mar. It is currently unknown when the Doogie Kealoha, M.D. series will premiere on Disney+.  No casting choices or other production details have been shared at the time of writing.

Presumably the series will follow a similar path to the original which followed a teenaged genius working as a licensed physician and navigating the complexity of becoming an adult. Not familiar with the popular early 90’s series? Check out the synopsis below:

Neil Patrick Harris was a favorite of TV audiences as medical prodigy Dr. Douglas “Doogie” Howser in this 1989-’93 comedy-drama. Created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley, the series follows Doogie’s daily trials and travails at work, the problems that come along with the notoriety as the country’s youngest surgeon, and his personal life as a regular teenager who just wants to borrow his dad’s car to take his girlfriend out on a date. When he’s not tackling social issues of the day or butting heads with his stern but wise father, Dr. David Howser (James B. Sikking), Doogie pals around with window-entering best bud Vinnie Delpino (Max Casella) and always finds time to post select tidbits of wisdom into his computer journal.”

Though we may not know when the reboot will premiere, it is still exciting to see these favored stories reintroduced for younger generations to enjoy. What series or films are you excited to stream exclusively on Disney+?
