Confirmed: Director James Cameron Shares Filming is “100% Complete” for ‘Avatar 2‘. During a one-on-one interview between Actor and former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Director and Filmmaker James Cameron before the 2020 Australian World Summit, the two entertainer discussed how Cameron’s work on the Avatar sequels is coming along and shared an exciting update!
Cameron shared, “COVID hit us like it hit everybody… We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.” he continued, “So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting. We’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about 10 percent left to go. We’re 100 percent complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95 percent complete on Avatar 3.”
All four Avatar sequels are being filmed simultaneously, likely due to prevent signs of aging of the actors and the long editing process needed to bring these visually stunning films to life. Another factor is the high demand for actresses such as Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, making it hard to commit to a 4-film project over the course of several years, versus an intense round of filming over the course of several months before moving on to other projects. Just looking at Saldana’s future projects alone, it is likely she is going to be very busy with her Guardians of the Galaxy schedule and rumors of more Star Trek films currently in development.
