Echo Lake Refurbishment Continues as Disney Freshens Up Logs and Tree Stumps
Echo Lake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is still getting some TLC, and even the lake’s not-so-natural scenery is receiving a fresh coat of paint. As work continues around the drained lagoon, Disney has now repainted the artificial logs and tree stumps that normally poke above the water, giving them a fresh dark brown finish ahead of the lake eventually being refilled.

While the logs and stumps may look like simple pieces of scenery, they are doing more than adding a little wilderness to the middle of Hollywood Studios. The props are strategically placed throughout Echo Lake to help disguise piping, connections, and other infrastructure in the water. With the lake currently drained, guests can get an unusual look at how Disney uses themed elements to hide some of the less glamorous nuts and bolts, or in this case pipes and plumbing, that keep the area running.
Earlier in the refurbishment, only a couple of the tree stumps had received their new paint. Now the remaining stumps and logs have been coated in the same dark brown color. Once Echo Lake is filled again, much of the infrastructure will disappear beneath the water while the freshly painted logs and stumps remain visible above the surface, restoring the familiar look of the area.
Echo Lake was drained in August as Disney began refurbishment work on the lagoon’s props and Dockside Diner. The distinctive vintage steamer-shaped quick-service location sits along the water alongside one of the area’s most recognizable residents, Gertie the Dinosaur, home of Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction. Echo Lake also sits in the middle of a busy section of the park surrounded by Hollywood & Vine, 50’s Prime Time Café, Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, and For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration.

Disney has not announced when the Echo Lake refurbishment will be completed or when the lagoon will be refilled, but the freshly painted scenery is another sign of progress. Sometimes the best Disney theming is the stuff you never realize is hiding something right in front of you.
