Exploring the Wonderland Playground at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

A brand-new indoor play space is bringing the whimsical art style of legendary Disney artist Mary Blair to life. Opening officially on September 14, Drawn to Wonderland invites young park guests to step inside a physical collage inspired by Blair’s iconic conceptual artwork for Alice in Wonderland.

Located in the back-left corner of The Magic of Disney Animation building in Disney’s Hollywood Studios—taking over a former studio office space—the playground bridges the magic of visual development with hands-on active play. At the entrance, original-style concept art sets the scene as the Visual Development department of an animation studio, where the bold colors and geometric shapes of a painting appear to literally spill out into the room.

Designed for Young Explorers

Safety and comfort are central to the experience. Safety guidelines posted at the front state that children must be supervised at all times. The entire play area is specifically designed for kids ages 6 months to 5 years old and is divided into two distinct, age-appropriate sections:

1. The Baby & Toddler Area (Ages 6–23 Months)

Designed for the smallest travelers, this side features gentle interactive elements surrounded by towering dandelions, singing flowers, and bread-and-butterflies soaring overhead. The design transitions seamlessly from flat hand-drawn murals on the walls to dimensional pop-out elements, culminating in fully 3D creatures flying above. The Caterpillar gazes over the area from the back wall, while giant flowers frame a miniature bridge.

2. The Older Kids Area (Ages 2–5 Years)

For toddlers and preschoolers ready for bigger adventures, the opposite side dives straight into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and the Tulgey Wood forest. Highlights include:

• Interactive Mad Hatter Tea Table: Packed with tactile play, kids can spin interactive teacups and track “bubble” marbles emerging from teapots to trigger playful sound effects. Lifting the lid of the large center teapot reveals the sleeping Dormouse, which triggers a dynamic room lighting shift while the teacups play music synced directly to the background soundtrack.

• Mad Hatter’s House: Surrounded by synthetic shrubbery, kids can climb steps, peek through house windows, and explore fake stone pathways.

• Cheshire Cat Roller Slide: A sculpted statue of the Cheshire Cat perches on a wooden archway directly above a roller slide. As kids slide down, sensors activate random movie quotes from the grinning cat alongside playful sound effects.

• Paint the Roses Red: Near the Tulgey Wood corner, kids can spin interactive wheels to “paint” the roses red or white.

• Tulgey Wood Forest: Filled with iconic signage pointing “this way,” “that way,” and “yonder,” the forest wall features embedded sensory marbles and whimsical creatures straight from the film, including the Hammer Bird, Pencil Bird, and Accordion Owl. Nearby murals showcase Tweedledum and Tweedledee rendered as the smiling sun and moon, alongside the Cage Bird and Horn Ducks.

• Queen of Hearts Castle: Following the playing-card-covered path leads to a miniature dead-end feature: a heart-shaped window looking into a tiny diorama of Alice endlessly falling down the rabbit hole alongside tumbling furniture.

A Welcome Oasis for Parents

Disney didn’t forget about resting adults! Padded benches circle both sides of the playground, giving parents a comfortable place to keep an eye on their little ones. Even better, the benches in the older child section come equipped with built-in charging outlets, allowing adults to literally recharge their phones while their kids burn off energy in air-conditioned comfort.

With dynamic ceiling light effects shifting from soft pink swirls and lush treetops to dark, stormy thunderclouds, Drawn to Wonderland offers an immersive, sensory-rich environment that celebrates animation heritage while keeping little ones entertained.
